On Monday I met with Mary Walsh, Executive Scientist, responsible for waste management and sustainability initiatives in Cork City Council.  
Waste management for the council is focused primarily on reduction and prevention. Their key waste priorities are food and textile waste, as both significantly contribute to climate change. The council’s policy is informed by the Government’s Climate Action Plan (2021) and Waste Action Plan for a Circular Economy (2020).
According to the EPA about about 1 million tonnes of food each year is wasted in Ireland, with 60% ending up in general waste. 30 tonnes of this food waste is produced in households in Cork City daily. And globally, more than 25% of food produced is wasted. The goal is to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030 at consumer, retail and producer levels, reiterated in the EU Circular Economy Package and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Food waste that ends up in landfill produces methane gas as it decomposes, and it’s estimated contributes to 8%-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Food waste composting is an effective strategy being used to help reduce gas emissions.

Textile waste in Ireland is quite substantial with 110,000 tonnes of textiles discarded every year according to the EPA, which is mostly processed by waste-to-energy incineration plants and landfill. About 40,000 tonnes of this has been discarded in the household bin making it the single largest source of textiles waste.
Around 57,000 tonnes of textiles every year are collected separately through commercial textile banks and collections (24%) and direct donations to charity shops (10%). Of these collected textiles around 44,500 tonnes are sold for reuse - 6% are sold for reuse within Ireland and 21% are exported overseas. Vintage and online reselling of clothes is around 1,500 tonnes each year. In terms of recycling, around 15,000 tonnes of collected textiles each year go for recycling as rags, fibre, etc. (EPA website)
Currently the council offer a ‘waste prevention’ grant scheme for community groups to undertake their own local waste projects. Pre-Covid they also supported an annual fashion show in St Peter’s Cork, North Main St in partnership with local charity shops to promote the reuse of second-hand clothing. October is National Reuse Month, so it is likely this event will be happening this year.  
In the Cork City Development Plan, the council acknowledges the role of the Circular Economy in the future development of the city.
'Cork City Council plays a fundamental role in the transition from a linear to a circular economy as they are responsible for key policies in public services that affect citizens’ wellbeing, economic growth and environmental quality. This plan will foster the linkages to transition from linear model to a circular model which keeps resources in use for as long as possible.' (1.5 Strategic Vision, Cork City Development Plan)
As Mary explains, a key factor in the success of circular economy projects is currently dependent on social enterprise groups, due to not being economically sustainable. The Revive Paint project managed by Northside Community Enterprise, is one such project. A collection depot for paint is located at the Civic Amenity Site. About 190,000 tonnes of paint in collected annually with 60% water-based paint being reused and sold in the NCE shop in Farranferris. The idea for the project was inspired by the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun, who came down to train staff and help set up the project.
In September, the council will be piloting a new Climate Action Training project in eight schools through the Green Schools initiative, to train teachers working with transition year students.

The explanation? As Congressman Filemón Vela (Brownsville) was quoted as saying in the Valley Morning Star, a Harlingen newspaper, ‘I think there was no Democratic national organisational effort in South Texas and the results showed. The visits are nice, but without a planned media and grassroots strategy you just can’t sway voters. When you take voters for granted like national Democrats have done in South Texas for forty years, there are consequences to pay.’
In the end it was the economy that sunk hopes of a Democratic landslide. It was a gigantic mistake to make the election a plebiscite on Trump’s bungling of the pandemic without making an all-out effort to convince voters that a Biden administration would sustain family incomes and small businesses until Covid was defeated. The 2.2 trillion dollar relief bill passed by the House should have been the basis for an aggressive campaign, but the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, allowed the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, to take it hostage and Biden, mumbling through the two presidential debates, never really crusaded to free it. Meanwhile, the third-quarter employment figures, however misleading, gave Trump an unexpected boost; they were proof, he claimed, of the shining future ahead. A new national lockdown would send that ‘recovery’ to hell. The Democrats underestimated the resonance this argument had with the shop-owning and entrepreneurial middle classes facing extinction or digestion by Amazon. It wasn’t so hard to convince bar owners, building contractors, franchise managers, small manufacturers and the like that closures were a greater evil than half a million more Covid deaths. (This is, of course, a global phenomenon: just look at the role played by hysterical small business owners in the violent protests against new lockdowns in Western Europe.)
As for working people, forced every day to choose between income and health, Biden’s vow to put science in charge of the pandemic was easily spun by Republicans as proof of a economic apocalypse overseen by the dread Dr Fauci. The Democratic counter-response was weak, in part because the union movement had even less prominence in the campaign than in 2016. The uncontrolled spread of Covid restricted the door-to-door canvassing that has always been the contribution of union members to electoral battles. The Biden campaign did give greater emphasis than Clinton to workers’ rights, collective bargaining and the $15 minimum wage, but it broadcast the same empty messages about job creation and the future of work. ‘Millions of green energy jobs’ is an abstraction that utterly fails to connect to the concrete circumstances of Rustbelt and inner-city communities. Mainstream Democrats have had more than a generation to respond to the simple question: what will you do to increase job opportunities here in Erie (or Warren, Dubuque, Lorain, Wilkes-Barre and so on)? They have never offered a serious response. Concrete solutions would involve geographically targeted public investment, control over capital flight and financial outflows, and, above all, a massive expansion of public employment. These are avenues most Democrats are too terrified to go down.
Since Reagan, Republicans have always fought to turn institutional power against the Democrats, pushing them onto unfavourable terrain and disorganising their base. In winning the House Speakership in 1994, Newt Gingrich introduced the ruthless style of political combat and absolute oppositionism that McConnell has so exquisitely refined. The election of 2010 was an even more important turning point. That year the Republicans mobilised the full power of the network of billionaire donors, regional policy centres and political action committees that they had been building for thirty years to storm state legislatures and governors’ mansions across the heartland and sunbelt. They won 700 legislative seats and flipped twenty state legislative chambers, numbers that grew during the Obama years. Since in most states legislatures remain responsible for redistricting, the Republicans ruthlessly gerrymandered state and congressional seats to enshrine their majorities. That’s why winning back state legislative majorities in this census year should have been the highest Democratic priority after the White House and Senate. The most important target was Texas, where Democrats were confident they could take the nine additional seats needed to control the House. In the event, they didn’t win any, so Republicans will be free to conduct a new gerrymander.
The United States, as pundits hourly remind us, is now cleaved into two almost equal-sized political universes. But power abhors stalemates and clearly in the present world the evolution is towards differential experiments in post-fascist oligarchy and pseudo-democracy. A weak and court-enchained Biden-Harris White House, built on the betrayal of progressives and subservient to a donor class of Silicon Valley and Wall Street billionaires, will face a new depression without the wind of popular enthusiasm at its back. Where does this point except to total destruction in the 2022 midterm and the further triumph of the new darkness?

More on S.P.A.N.C.C
'Individually the companies were formidable. Together they were unstoppable. A coalition of monopolies that eventually managed complete supremacy.' The companies formed their coalition in 2040. S.P.A.N.C.C earned favour by strategically selling products and services to a global market. From AI tools, to military tech, to vaccines, cures and sustainable energy resources. Their biggest funds came from commercial space flights. The profits of which went into an asteroid mining project and building a research centre on the moon. By 2050 they established a small Lunar colony for research purposes. By 2080 the colonies were expanded to accommodate people. S.P.A.N.C.C gained more influence by demanding more access to land and access and threatened trade withdrawals of now coveted and essential resources, if they were not met. Eventually, U.N and S.P.A.N.C.C joined hands to form the Global Confederate and this further cemented their hold. Over the next few years, carbon emissions dropped. Civil wars were interrupted. Education standards and outreach improved. True globalization was envisioned and somewhat realised. Their total take over started with standardizing education, training of the protective services and eventually law, order and politics. With globalized cryptocurrency conversion - They gained stability and essentially monopolized the development of the world. Their philosophy is individuality amidst a united world citizenry. The details about the individual companies aren't too relevant to the drabbles. Once again, it is an attempt to show the good and the bad. It can also help to know the nuances of where some of my characters are going to work/study and what their jobs entail. Apart from that, I spent way too much time on this for some inexplicable reason, and so, I must share it. A slightly scroll-y post below the cut, because it features some art of the company runners!

There is nothing new to report regarding SPC-001 at this time.

Selachian Pugnātorial Capabilities: Individuals enhanced with SPC-001 display a dramatic improvement in pugilistic prowess and have consistently proven capable of easily dispatching 90% of squaloid entities in simulations, even with no prior training. Furthermore, SPC-001 subjects have reported a radical elevation in coastal requiescence position retention, even when under assault from extragranular sedimentary weaponry.
Project Components: SPC-001 is a manmade chemical substance which augments the biological strength and dexterity of human beings. After initial exposure to SPC-001, subjects will undergo a steady increase in muscle mass over the following 72 hours, accompanied by heightened energy levels and adroit perception of their surroundings. Increased lung capacity and resistance to deep-sea hydrostatic pressure are common side effects.
Following the DREAD PORPOISE COMMUNION and the subsequent activation of the ALL HANDS ON DECK PROTOCOL, SPC agents embedded in the food industry began introducing discreet amounts of SPC-001 into numerous products intended for public consumption. Centre researchers have projected a full global saturation of SPC-001 to be achieved by the year ████. In the event that the DREAD PORPOISE COMMUNION ends before global saturation can be achieved, more aggressive means of SPC-001 dispersal may be undertaken to prevent a complete End-of-World K/O Failure Scenario.
Nascency Impetus: On May 16, ████, all observed selachian entities across the globe simultaneously demanifested, including those in SPC captivity. No selachian entities or evidence of the continued presence of selachian entities have been observed since. A Maximum State of Emergency was declared soon after by the Executive Pugilist Assembly and the phenomenon was codified as the DREAD PORPOISE COMMUNION. It is the belief of the Assembly that the selachians are congregating in preparation for the FINAL CONFLICT, an event foretold by Elder Pugilord Azmanititas in the Centre's original constitutional documents in 1451.

[08:23] DrTsega: No? Okay, I'll break it down for you.
[08:26] DrTsega: I was part of a group known as the Selachian Punching Centre. An organization dedicated to fighting the menace that plagued our oceans. "We punch underwater so you can live on the land." That's what we used to say.
[08:27] DrTsega: I know what you're thinking.
[08:29] DrTsega: Yes. It was us keeping you safe the entire time. The Centre safeguarded mankind for centuries. Civilization as we knew it wouldn't have been possible if we weren't around. Our influence was unparalleled, extending to every level of every government, changing the course of world events, yet remaining a complete secret from everybody, which was really quite tricky.
Then, one day, the selachian menace disappeared. Our immediate reaction was one of disbelief, followed by euphoria, followed by raucous celebration. We danced. We drank ourselves stupid. We sang the songs of our forefathers. The orgies weren't officially sanctioned, of course, but boy howdy-doo were they tremendous.
Sadly, our revelry wasn't meant to last.
"DREAD PORPOISE COMMUNION", the Assembly called it. The prophesied gathering of every selachian, big or small. Every sharp, slimy, putrid horror that haunted our dreams, coming together in one place to bring about the end of all other life on our beautiful, green planet.
"But fear not," said our trusted Assembly. They told us that the human race would fight back. They said that when the selachians returned with their armies and squaloid murder-drones, we would be ready.
And they were right. We were ready. Thanks to SPC-001, we managed to get the entire human race fighting fit. At first people were alarmed when everyone started getting super ripped for no apparent reason, but then they realized it was awesome and the panic died down. Within a few months, every man, woman, and child was a lean, mean, punching machine. Even babies had abs you could wash your clothes on. It seemed like everything was going fine.
And that's how it went for the first couple of years: fine. Sure, boxing had to be outlawed once folks could punch with the same Newtonian force as your average car crash, and there were a few riots now and then over tank top shortages, but for the most part everything felt normal.
Year three, people started getting antsy. We had kept ourselves busy at the Centre by devising new weapons for selachian warfare, but every innovation felt hollow with a lack of anything to use them on. We grew listless. Surely the assault would begin any day, right?
Year four. There was an aura of dread hanging over the whole organization. I remember sitting in the Site-71 cafeteria, eating pickled cabbage and creamed corn salads with my comrades, when I finally heard someone ask aloud what we'd all wondered in the dark corners of our heads.
"What if they don't come back?"
It was Simmons who said that, of course. Of course. I kicked him in the face—a punch would have really hurt him—but the damage was done. It's a scary thought, losing your purpose in life. Faced with that kind of existential ennui, it's no wonder that everyone responded by flipping their shit. Hersberger screamed and started smearing her salad all over her face. Gertzler stabbed his fork tines into his cheek with no visible emotion. Bühler just broke down and cried until his tears turned to blood.
But Schwartzentruber was downright fuming. Started shouting all sorts of obscenities. Said he'd shove his fist down Simmons' throat and rip out his toenails from the inside. And Simmons was all defensive, "you all were thinking it" and that kind of stuff. The two kept going at it. We shouldn't have just sat there and watched, but no one thought fists would ever get involved. How could we have known?
I remember the entire cafeteria going silent. One moment, the two colleagues had been arguing. Next thing we knew, Schwartzentruber was wearing Simmons' face around his arm like a bracelet. Fist went straight through. Nobody knew what to say. Hersberger just picked the brain matter from her hair. There was no finishing our dinner after something like that.
We all tried to write it off as an isolated incident, an unhinged employee who forgot his own strength in a moment of pure emotion. That illusion was shattered when reports started coming in from the other sites. Similar incidents were happening all over the world, and within a few weeks it wasn't just limited to SPC personnel. These arms were made for punching, and that's just what they did.
As time went on, it became harder for us to fight the itch. Punching bags were laughable at that point, so instead we invented punching blocks out of a titanium-concrete composite. Even fashioned them into the shape of selachians to help take the pain away, but it still wasn’t enough. Whenever we came close to a cure, someone would end up atomizing the equipment with a flick of the wrist and we'd have to start over.
Eventually, one day I walked into the cafeteria and found the floor covered in what must have been two inches of blood. I thought maybe a pipe had burst until I saw Bühler sitting on a table in the corner. Guy was slathered in viscera from top to bottom, and he was wearing human heads around his arms like they were snap bracelets. I asked if he wanted to talk, but he didn't answer. He just stared at his fists and trembled. Then, in the blink of an eye, he was dead, hole in his beefy chest so big I coulda driven my Grampy's Volvo through it.
That was what broke me, I think. I had never seen someone self-pugilate before. I didn't know how many people were still alive in Site-71, but I knew that I would not perpetuate the carnage. I gathered some medical supplies from the surgical augmentations lab and tied a tourniquet around my burgeoning, well-defined bicep. Carefully, I injected myself with the nearest substance that resembled an anesthetic and bid my guns goodbye.
Screaming, writhing, I hacked off my arm using only a pair of rusty toenail clippers. Needless to say, I was dizzy from pain, blood loss, and the 5 CCs of green apple daiquiri I'd injected myself with, but somehow I managed to drag myself back to the cafeteria to cauterize my stump in the kitchen's oven. Barely clinging to consciousness, I set the oven to preheat, wrapped my stump in a tent of foil, and stuck it inside, turning regularly to promote an even cauter and applying a light baste to keep it moist.
When the bleeding stopped, I went back and repeated the process with my other arm. The second time was harder, I think. With no free hands remaining, I was forced to grip the toenail clippers with my teeth. I also ran out of baste. It was the most agonizing experience I could ever possibly fathom, but here I am. Alive. My cannonball deltoids still ripple with pugilistic vigor now and then, but the stubs are too short to be lethal.
And that's it. That's my story. That's how I ended up here, barricaded alone in an underground facility, typing on a keyboard with my tongue. I haven't been able to get in touch with any other Centre sites, and I can't leave the building. Every day I lose a little more hope. My personal hygiene has suffered, too—partly because I can't look at a pair of clippers without bursting into tears. My toenails are getting really long now. I'll probably have to use a pair of scissors or something. I could even use that electric carving knife I got for my birthday. Hell, I think there's a chainsaw in the supply closet. No shortage of options, really.
Even if I'm alive now, there's no telling how long that will last. Sometimes I hear people punching on the reinforced doors, desperate to break in and claim another victim to slake their drunken punchlust. Someday they may succeed. There's enough food left around to keep me going a while, though just for a while. I've kept my mind occupied and my spirits up by watching Dr. Cavender's Walking Dead box sets, but I can feel that post-Season-Six quality drop looming just around the corner.
Maybe this was their plan all along. Maybe they just left the planet, knowing full well we'd destroy ourselves. Maybe when the last human has passed their final breath, the selachians will return from wherever they went and feast on our tight, sculpted corpses. Or maybe they're happier where they are now. Maybe they're not coming back. I hope that's not the case. As much as it pains me to say it: I miss them.

Kyle Saltmarsh Age: 27 Job: Robotics Engineer at Woodside Energy. Education: PhD Engineering in Submarine Vibration and Acoustics, BSc in Physics and Applied Mathematics, BME (Honours). Current project: Deployment of robotic technology onto Woodside’s oil and gas plant for surveillance, and performing tasks through robot manipulation. Achievements: Best honours thesis, several hackathon wins, top IBM 2018 graduate in Australia/New Zealand, 2018 Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition Winner, world’s largest bungee jumper, blogger and hosting a podcast to inspire people in technology. Ultimate goal: To positively impact the world through the power of technology.

Education: Undertaking an EngD in Structural Metals for Gas Turbine Applications, BEng in Aerospace Engineering, with a year in industry, Swansea University. Current project: I am researching the development of bespoke test facilities and fundamental understanding of thermo-mechanical fatigue crack growth behaviour in titanium alloys. Achievements: Graduating with a BEng in Aerospace Engineering with First-Class Honours, presenting my research at national and international conferences, having research published in an internationally recognised journal and a Green Belt Certificate in Lean Six Sigma. Ultimate goal: To become a well-established, technical expert in my engineering field.

Ilija Rašović Age: 27 Job: Lecturer at University of Birmingham Education: MEng in Materials Science at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. DPhil in Materials at St Cross College, Oxford. Current project: The use of fullerenes — nanometre-sized balls of carbon — in biomedical applications. One of the methods I have devised, to make them soluble in water, helps in the formation of large self-assembled structures that hold great promise as multi-modal drug delivery vehicles. Achievements: The IOM3 international Literature Review Prize in 2016. Final of the IOM3 Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition in 2017. I joined the P1 Graphene Solutions as an advanced materials engineer and became a lecturer at the University of Birmingham. In 2019, I joined IOM3’s Younger Members’ Committee. Ultimate goal: To make a contribution to the wide deployment of transformative nanomedicine in a clinical setting within my lifetime. My broader vision is to continue to champion materials science and make more accessible the obfuscated world of academic research.

Amanda Field Age: 25 Job: Development Engineer. Education: BEng Materials Science and Technology, University of Birmingham. Current project: Trying to finish my PhD on additive manufacturing of tungsten for nuclear fusion reactors. It’s challenging but worthwhile because the success of nuclear fusion would go a long way to solving the energy crisis. I’m working in additive manufacturing. Achievements: I have presented my work at international conferences. I was involved with an experimental parabolic flight campaign for the European Space Agency where we used a demonstrator device to 3D print metal in zero gravity. I came second in the IOM3 Young Persons Lecture Competition. Ultimate Goal: To keep working in additive manufacturing. I’d like to stay in R&D as you get such variety in your role and you have the potential to make significant improvements to a product or a technology, or design new ones yourself.

Jack Saunders Age: 25 Job: PhD Student in Materials Chemistry. Education: MChem with a year in industry, University of Manchester. Undertaking a PhD in Materials Chemistry, University of Manchester, in collaboration with AkzoNobel. Current project: To analyse the impact of different polymers on the corrosion protection afforded by emulsion paints. I aim to achieve this by synthesising and testing polymer’s corrosion performance. This is to better understand how polymer chemistry can affect the corrosion protection offered by the dried paint. Achievements: A First Class Master’s degree in chemistry. My PhD at the School of Materials at The University of Manchester. Awarded the President’s Doctoral Scholar Award. Presented my work at conferences such as the RSC’s MacroGroup YRM, Dublin, 2018. Won the regional Young Persons’ Lecture Competition this year. Ultimate goal: To develop my research and management skills in order to have my own research group in the field of polymer chemistry and colloid science.

Education: MSci in Natural Sciences, University of Cambridge, specialising in Materials Science. Current project: A PhD project investigating a new intermetallic alloy for commercial gas turbine engines. Specifically, trying to develop a novel coating material required to attach abrasives onto the end of rotating turbine blades, in pursuit of a more efficient sealing system. Achievements: I enjoy teaching in the department, and was recently awarded the Departmental Demonstrator Prize. I talked at the Cambridge Science Festival and the inaugural Cambridge Soapbox Science event. I will be representing the South Eastern Region in the final of the IOM3 Young Persons’ Lecture Competition this year, selected for an RCUK Public Policy Internship at the Government Office for Science in 2018, where I got to contribute to government policy. Ultimate goal: To see the material I am working on make it into a commercial gas turbine engine. I want to take my expertise in this area into industry, and be able to contribute to the development of the hybrid-electric aircraft sector.

Abigail Georgia Robinson Age: 22 Job: Geology student. Education: MGeol in Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of St Andrews, graduating in 2020. Current project: I will co-lead an expedition to the Lofdal Complex, Namibia, which hosts a suite of carbonatitic and silicic igneous rocks, some of which are enriched in heavy rare earth elements. I aim to integrate geological field data with geochemical and isotopic datasets to model the petrogenesis of the scientifically interesting igneous rocks. Achievements: I was awarded the prestigious Laidlaw Scholarship in Research and Leadership in 2018. This supported my field campaign in Armenia, to investigate the interplay between climate change, hydrology and medieval irrigation systems. I did a research placement at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre where I learned to code in Python and used this to statistically investigate the geographical origin of lunar meteorites across the lunar surface. This work was included in Dr Marissa Tremblay’s published abstract and presentation at the 2019 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, USA. Ultimate goal: I plan to embark on a PhD on the tectonically imposed planet-wide cycling of the volatile elements. I plan to be an active communicator promoting an understanding of geoscience and the global scale problems that we, the geoscientists, can work to solve.

Federica Rosaria Lisa Age: 24 Job: Technical Graduate at British Steel. Education: MChem Chemistry with Forensic Science with a year in industry, University of Leicester. Current project: A variety of research and development projects – one on understanding and reducing the factors that influence power and electrode consumption at the ladle arc furnaces in the secondary steelmaking process. Achievements: Graduated with a First Class Honours and secured a 12-month industrial placement and a place on a graduate programme. I succeeded in my secondary school exams after moving to a new continent and starting International School. Ultimate goal: To work for a sustainable discovery/development that will improve lives and I would like to lead a company. I would also like to promote the importance of education, support developing countries in the construction of more schools and strengthen the educational system.

Education: MEng Aerospace Engineering with a year in industry, University of Sheffield. Current project: Surface engineering at Rolls-Royce. I’m involved with different projects across the engine, including compressor sealing systems, hot end environmental protection and anti-seize coatings. Achievements: Developed a novel method to flow test ceramic filters used in the investment casting process. The technique contributed to a 3% improvement in casting yield and the reduced variation helps lower the amount of metal. Patents may be filed on the work. Ultimate goal: I’d like to work with academia to co-develop novel coatings/surface treatments. I enjoy the challenges that come with working on new technology as the answers can’t simply be found in a textbook.

Louise Gale Age: 28 Job: Materials Engineer at Rolls-Royce Plc. Education: MSci & MA in Natural Sciences, specialising in Materials Science, University of Cambridge. Current project: The development of ceramic matrix composites for introduction into aerospace gas turbine engines. My responsibilities include running mechanical testing programmes, supervising work at our university partners as well as the analysis and fractography of tested samples to elucidate damage mechanisms. Achievements: Completing the Rolls-Royce Graduate Scheme, including obtaining funding for an international placement in the Materials Testing Department in Berlin. I became Technical Lead of a £2.5mln project which was part of a government-funded programme to develop SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites. I developed the £7mln, three-year materials development component to the follow on project that was approved in late 2017. Ultimate goal: To become an expert on ceramic and composite materials systems.

James Grant Age: 24 Job: EngD student with TATA Steel and M2A, Materials and Manufacturing Academy. Education: School of Physics and Astronomy, Cardiff University, College of Engineering, Swansea University. Current project: Development of novel coating solutions for the improvement of pre/post heat treatment of carbon steel conveyance tubes. My project aims to reduce high-temperature oxidation caused by the normalising process. Achievements: I developed a novel anodisation system for fabricating alumina masks in the molecular beam epitaxy application. In addition to this, my placement with Merck successfully optimised electrophoretic fluids to further enhance the E-ink display technology. I’ve been competing in the 2019 IOM3 Young Persons Lecture Competition. Having won the SWMA heat and the South West Regional, presenting at the national final in May. Ultimate goal: To educate and encourage the next generation of students to take up STEM subjects. I hope I can engage and excite a younger audience about materials science and demonstrate the opportunities available in engineering.

Vidya Chamundeswari Narasimhan Age: 28 years Job: Post-doctoral Research Fellow Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTU. Education: PhD in Materials Engineering. Current project: Developing responsive nasogastric tubes for the elderly and using nature-derived biopolymers for biomedical applications. Achievements: Young Scientist Award conferred by VIWA in India, Title Winner of the IOM3 Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition 2017, Women in Engineering Travel Grant in 2018, Chair of the Young Scientists Forum at the European Materials Research Society conference in Poland 2018. Ultimate goal: To lead and manage a diverse team, foster interdisciplinary collaboration and offer R&D support for cutting edge research in the healthcare sector. I also want to contribute significantly towards mentoring the next generation of young girls towards pursuing exciting careers in STEM fields.

I run two small businesses, have an Associate Diploma from the National College of Music, and an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and was appointed as a Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers. Ultimate goal: To complete my current project and transfer a comprehensive mechanical property database detailing static and fatigue performance to a major engineering sponsor – to enable novel component manufacture. Further, I would like to use my experience to develop a career in public engagement or education.

Robert Hoye Age: 28 Job: Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow. Education: PhD, Cambridge University, BE(Hons). Current project: I am looking at two areas that could accelerate the scale of photovoltaics. This makes an attractive technology for producing clean energy, especially in remote regions. Achievements: Developed a recombination contact to couple a metal-halide perovskite top-cell with an n-type silicon bottom cell, which lead to new design rules to identify promising classes of materials that could tolerate defects, and an all-inorganic device structure that led to 80% external quantum efficiency in solar cells. This went on display in the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden, Germany. 2018 Young Engineer of the Year Award by the Royal Academy of Engineering, which also awarded me £500,000 to start an independent group at the University of Cambridge. European Forbes 30 under 30 list. Ultimate goal: To create new classes of defect-tolerant semiconductors that can be used as low-cost and efficient top-cells in tandem with silicon.

Matthew Wadge Age: 24 Job: PhD Researcher. Education: BSc(Hons) Biomedical Materials Science & PhD (ongoing), University Of Nottingham. Current project: Exploring novel formation and ion-exchange reactions of titanate surfaces for biomedical applications. Achievements: Achieved eight awards during my undergraduate degree including the Best Student Prize, Best Project Prize, and The Armourers and Brasiers’ Best Student Prize for achieving the highest project mark within the faculty. I have since won the Armourers and Brasiers’/TWI Best BSc/BEng Student of the Year Award, Best Oral Presentation Prize from the UK Society for Biomaterials Conference in 2018. Published my first journal paper during the first year of my PhD. I am one of the Nottingham coordinators for this year’s Pint of Science festival. Ultimate goal: To try and improve a patient’s quality of life, from improving fixation of hip stems for improved longevity, through to antibacterial surfaces for minimising infections. I aim to continue on into academia post PhD to share my experiences, and hopefully train the next generation of bioengineers and biomaterial scientists.

Wellbeing was centre stage at the third Anthem Session business event last Friday. Five business leaders, along with Hon. David Parker, were invited to share their thinking on the ‘Business of Wellbeing’, and how business can support the government in its ambition described in the country’s first Wellbeing Budget.
The Anthem Session thought leadership series is designed to bring together key industry decisionmakers to share their voices and insights, provoke discussion and create opportunities for improved ways of doing business in New Zealand.
“We’ve chosen this important topic as it’s fair to say that for many years, business operated with only half an eye on wellbeing,” said Carolyn Kerr, General Manager of Anthem.
“Arguably, the business paradigm has been shaped by shareholder capitalism, where return-on-financial-capital is seen as the success measure of business. Thankfully, a new kind of capitalism – stakeholder capitalism – is emerging which sees business in the whole.  It sees business operating within an ecosystem and not a production line, with relationships in all directions: from partners and suppliers, to regulators and communities, and beyond to the Earth we walk on and the air we breathe.”

Hon. David Parker – Attorney-General, Minister for the Environment, Trade and Export Growth and Associate Minister of Finance
Hon. David Parker said that New Zealand is ahead of many other countries in sustainability due to our “vast renewable energy resources, our forests, fisheries, soils and rainfall”, and if we can’t become more sustainable, who can? He was one of the architects of the Wellbeing Budget and has responsibility for seeing it delivered through his many portfolios.
He told the business leaders that we shouldn’t just be doing it because it looks good but because it is owed to our children and grandchildren that they can live in a futureproofed environment that our generation works to protect now. “There’s a moral imperative to future generations to make sure that we do take care of those problems and we’re attempting to do that.”

Jacki Johnson – Global Steering Committee Co-Chair for the United Nations Environment Programme Financial Initiative
Jacki laid a challenge to business leaders: “Governments can sign these agreements and set policy, but businesses have to lead and we have to create sustainable value from that.” The former IAG chief executive said that business must not operate in a vacuum, separate from the wellbeing agenda agreed to in documents such as the government’s Living Standards Framework or the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals.
The SDGs provide a strategic platform for delivering on the ‘why’ of your business, Johnson said. IAG as a company chose to focus on four of the goals as they related to their business. She said business leaders have to focus on purpose. “What is your business about and what are you contributing to? Can you hand-on-heart explain how your money was made and be proud of it as a human being, not as a chief executive? That is what we need to focus on.”

Matt Whineray – CEO, New Zealand Super Fund; Co-Chair, The Aotearoa Circle’s Sustainable Finance Forum
Matt focused on the three main points of the Circle’s recent interim report: ‘Changing Mindset”, “Green Finance” and “Finance in Green”. Changing mindset is about changing every company action to focus on the future. “We are talking about redefining responsibilities or at least clarifying them, aligning incentives around these long-term goals.”
Green Finance champions an understanding of how to “integrate the consideration of sustainability risks in a real practical sense” and Finance in Green is about mobilising and accelerating capital to sustainability solutions. Matt emphasised the importance of every future decision being made with sustainability in mind. “Lengthen your horizon and push out your boundaries.”

Traci Houpapa – Chair, Federation of Maori Authorities; Co-Chairman, Australia NZ Leaders Forum Indigenous Business Group; Chair, National Advisory Council for the Employment of Women
Traci said that in order to create change, business leaders need to understand that sustainability for Aotearoa’s future is an issue even bigger than their business. “It’s time for people like us to place emphasis on strategy that may not financially benefit our business but will create change – it requires courage and real leadership, not improvisation.”
Houpapa said that it is important that political, social, government and community leaders collaborate on the global issue to create a better future.  “It’s not about being the best in the world, Aotearoa New Zealand must be the best for the world.” She said the Wellbeing Budget and Living Standards Framework are a good start for changing the mindset of the country to focus on He Waka Eke Noa, a model where the people and environment all around the country are at the centre of every discussion, and she hopes more businesses will take it on board.

Gareth Edgecombe – CEO, T&G Global
Produce company T&G Global is planning for global environmental changes as a result of climate change. CEO Gareth Edgecombe said “We invested in a really exciting programme called the Hot Climate Breeding Programme. We’ve been working with the Patagonian government in Spain to look at new strains of apples that can cope with growing and thriving in a hot climate.”  The company must be ahead of the conditions as apple trees often take five to seven years before they produce good quality fruit.
Seeing the impact of climate change first-hand has inspired the company to become leaders in carbon emissions, food waste, renewable packaging and creating healthy communities. Gareth said T&G is looking into wellbeing for everyone impacted by its business. “We’ve defined our mission around sustainability as kaitiakitanga, and for us that’s the guardianship of treating the land, people, our produce, resources, and the community with the greatest respect as guardians of the future.”
So, what is the relationship between business and wellbeing?
What we heard is we are already in the business of wellbeing. From the people we employ and the customers we serve to the communities we contribute to and the environmental footprint we create – wellbeing is the true measure of success.
Second, we’re all in this together. We can only deliver improved wellbeing when we collaborate and partner for shared goals.

NEW NEXUS OF RADIO ASTRONOMY OPENS AT WORLD HERITAGE SITE The SKA Global Headquarters (SKA GHQ), the home of a new intergovernmental organization created to facilitate global collaboration in radio astronomy, has been formally opened and handed over in a ceremony attended by international dignitaries and partners from across the SKA project. More than 200 guests including government officials from SKA member countries were welcomed to the SKA GHQ for the event, which included a commemorative lecture by renowned astrophysicist Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, co-discoverer of the first radio pulsars. Located on the grounds of The University of Manchester's historic Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site this week, SKA's GHQ was designed from the start to become a nexus of radio astronomy and a global hub for astrophysics in the 21st century. Operated by an international partnership of countries, it is already home to staff from 16 countries who are currently focused on delivering the final design of the two SKA telescopes in collaboration with international partner institutes, drawing on the expertise of specialists from around the world. Once built, the SKA telescopes will have an expected lifespan of at least 50 years, making the GHQ a focal point for radio astronomy for decades to come. "This facility is key to enabling us to deliver the world's largest radio telescope," said Professor Philip Diamond, Director-General of the SKA Organization. "It will serve as a central hub for all the experts, more than 1,000 of them, working on this ambitious project around the world. Today I would like to tell them, whether they are scientists, engineers, software developers, policy-makers or others: this facility is now open, it is your home, and we look forward to welcoming you here." During the inauguration, Professor Mark Thomson, Executive Chair of the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), presented a commemorative key to Professor Diamond to mark the ceremonial handover of the building to the SKA. "The opening of the SKA Headquarters marks a major milestone for this incredibly exciting scientific project," said Professor Thomson. "The UK Government, through STFC, has committed £100m to the construction of the SKA and the headquarters itself and I am thrilled that the UK is hosting the home of this global endeavor. I look forward to seeing the headquarters filled with some of the brightest minds in the field of astronomy from across the world working to fulfil SKA's mission to reveal more of the universe than ever seen before." Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester, which operates the Jodrell Bank site and led on the delivery of the building, said: "After Jodrell Bank's designation as a World Heritage Site earlier this week, having the GHQ of the SKA at our Jodrell Bank site will greatly enhance the links we have with scientists across the world and further strengthen the development of the field of astrophysics. This is an important reminder of the international importance of science and of the UK's crucial role in such endeavors." The SKA Observatory will be the only intergovernmental organization with its headquarters in the North West region of the UK. As such, it is helping put Cheshire on the international map by hosting visits from royalty, government ministers and ambassadors. The SKA GHQ also hosts professional conferences where experts in astrophysics, engineering, computing and many other fields gather. It is already receiving several hundred business visits from all over the world every year, a number set to grow as the SKA telescopes enter operation. Construction of the £16.5m expansion of the original SKA office at Jodrell Bank started in 2017, funded by the UK Government's Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (£9.8m) via UKRI, The University of Manchester (£5.7m) and Cheshire East Council (£1m). The design was led by international architecture practice Hassell and the construction by engineering and construction firm Sir Robert McAlpine. Facilities within the 4,200 m^2 building include a 160-seat auditorium for science conferences, workshops and public talks, and state-of-the-art video conferencing technology to connect teams spread over 20 time zones, as well as an Operations Monitoring Centre to remotely manage the telescopes around the clock. Environmental features were a priority in the design, such as electric vehicle recharging, thermal zoning control and dark-sky compliant external lighting, which have ensured the building exceeds sustainable requirements. "While it is an outstanding building in its own right, it also symbolizes something much greater; this is the meeting point of nations who have decided to come together and pool their expertise and resources in order to advance human knowledge in astronomy on a site of great historic relevance," added Professor Diamond. The Jodrell Bank site was granted UNESCO World Heritage status earlier this week, celebrating its outstanding contribution to the development of radio astronomy globally, including the role played by the 76-m Lovell Telescope, once the world's largest single dish radio telescope. Fittingly, the world's future largest radio telescope, the SKA, is being led by an international collaboration from the same site.

H1/2021
50% of 2021 are gone. So while I had the ambition to keep writing weeknotes and collected various weekly bullet points, I just didn’t feel it and eventually didn’t see the value.
Work: Things are okay. I’m no longer at GDS as a substantial part of our organisation got spun off into the Central Digital & Data Office (CDDO), which looks after digital standards, assurance and strategies and is also part of the Cabinet Office. The scope of my and my team’s work hasn’t changed, however. We continue to take a community-led path. Recently, we blogged about it for the second time.

In June, I started going back to the office for a handful of days – after not being in the office for consecutive 467 days. Who would have thought that in March 2020?
I try to continue elements of my previous role as best as I can. I continue running the cross-government blogs, record case studies and meetups.
Health: Sticking to my 1000k running goal for 2021, I’m slightly behind after a slow April and an early May blocked by quarantine. June looked good again, though, as I clocked 100k and am standing at 430k at the moment. As long as I run about 100k every month now, I’ll be on target. My virtual running group keeps me going, and I know I can reach 1000k.
In early June, I started swimming in the lake that I look at every single day from the living and study room. It’s a total blessing. From door to dip, it takes me less than 5 minutes. I got myself a monthly subscription and went 7 times in June. The water temperature currently ranges from 18 to 21 degrees, which is pleasant. From September on, I might need a wetsuit – or go back to indoor swimming.
In other health news, I got my first COVID-19 vaccination in mid-May and will get my second one in mid-July. With rising cases once again, I’m looking forward to becoming fully vaccinated.
Culture: I haven’t been to many exhibitions and events yet. However, for my birthday, I went to Whitecube Gallery in Bermondsey.
I saw Nomadland and an Aalto documentary, and Disney’s Cruella was fun because of Emma Stone’s acting, the wild costumes and the classic 70s soundtrack.
In terms of music, my most significant UK discoveries were Welsh Kelly Lee Owens for electronic music and English Natalie Holt for classical compositions and scores.
Social: I started meeting some friends and colleagues in the neighbourhood again as social distancing rules were eased.
Side projects: Katrin, Simone and I organised another remote Public Service Lab Week in mid-June. For the second time, we had talks, workshops and discussions for 5 days at lunchtime, increasing German public servants’ understanding of user-centred design approaches.

Katrin and I also used it as an excuse to put together another Service Gazette. Entering its 7th year, it’s also the 5th German edition already. Those document the progression of Germany towards more user-centred ways of working pretty well. Most articles are available on Medium.com. We wrote the lead article on more accessible and equitable services, which I’m a little proud of but which should have been an even longer text.

Finance: The optimistic projections of some analysts I read at the beginning of the new year turned out to be true. In the last 6 months, I saw a few minor dips but significant overall gains again. My European and UK portfolios both grew substantially again, reaching a new record growth and letting me tick off my first annual target already after 6 instead of 12 months.
The best new individual investments were Alphabet and Zalando. As Oatly had its IPO, I also started investing and plan to build up a decent little stake. I continued to diversify my ETFs with more value stocks and also (currently underperforming) global clean energy stocks.
The weakest performers are Airbnb, CD Projekt and Trainline – but all for different reasons (ranging from not so great management to sudden change of government policy). I’ll keep invested in them, though, in for the long game.
The overall money-weighted rate of return of my UK portfolio increased from 40% to over 51%. The time-weighted rate of return is currently at +45%, outperforming the FTSE all world ETF that sits at +30%. It’s nice to beat the market – even though I know it’s luck and I shouldn’t be betting on it.
