From Deadline: New AMC CEO Christina Spade, Replaces Interim CEO Matt Blank
AMC Networks Ups Christina Spade To CEO Post; Patrick O’Connell To Take On CFO Role
AMC Networks has appointed COO and CFO Christina Spade as its new CEO, succeeding Matt Blank, who has held the role in an interim capacity since last September.
Patrick O’Connell, previously a senior executive at CBS Corp and Goldman Sachs, has in turn been named Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, reporting to Spade.
Blank will remain with AMC Networks until the end of the year in a consultancy role, a spokeswoman confirmed.
AMC Networks operates cable channels such as AMC, plus streaming services AMC+, Sundance Now and Acorn TV. Spade will lead them all from September 9 when she steps into the new role.
Today’s development, which comes as the business reports its second quarter results, marks a fast rise for Spade at AMC Networks. She has been with the New York-headquartered operations since January 2021, where she joined as Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and took on a dual role as CFO and COO in November last year.
During that time, she has worked under Blank, who was named interim CEO last September as previous Chief Exec and President Josh Sapan moved to an Executive Vice Chairman position. While the network is known for launching influential cable hits such as Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead and Mad Men, Showtime veteran Blank has focused heavily on building out the streaming business, which currently has an aggregate of 10.8 million subscribers and is expecting to hit 20-25 million in 2025.
The hire comes at a time of change for AMC Networks. The Walking Dead franchise is moving into a new era, with the original series set to end after its next tranche of episodes and several spin-off series launching. Anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead is due to land on August 14, while series featuring fan favorites Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie Green (Lauren Cohan), and Daryl (Norman Reedus) are forthcoming. Newer series include Moonhaven, Dark Winds and This is Going to Hurt and upcoming titles include Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire.
Blank said: “It’s been a pleasure to lead AMC Networks in this interim role, in particular working alongside Chris and the talented team to help develop the company’s direct-to-consumer businesses and strong pipeline of high-quality content. Chris is a strong, versatile leader whom I’ve known and worked closely with for more than 20 years, and I know she’ll bring her strong business and leadership skills, and passion for this company, to her new role.”
AMC Networks Chairman James Dolan said: “I want to thank Matt for his leadership over the past year and for the changes he’s brought about in the company and best positioning us for our further pivot into streaming. I’m delighted that Chris is taking over as our new CEO. She is a proven leader with a long track record driving transformative change in media and entertainment and I am confident she has the expertise and vision to guide AMC Networks to greater success.”
Spade said: “I am honored to assume the role of CEO. I’m a fan of this company in every respect, its content, brands, and most importantly, its people and dynamic and inclusive culture. I’m grateful for the support of Jim, our Board of Directors and Matt, and I look forward to working with the strong team here to unlock the rich opportunities that lie ahead.”
Before AMC Networks, Spade was Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer of ViacomCBS and before that held the same role CBS Corp. She also performed similar duties for Showtime Networks, spending a total of 21 years in the business overall.

February 23, 2021  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANIMATION LUMINARY FRED SEIBERT LAUNCHES NEW PRODUCTION COMPANY
Tumblr media
Visionary Producer of Such Blockbuster Animation Hits as Adventure Time, The Fairly OddParents, Castlevania, Bravest Warriors and Bee & Puppycat to Develop Range of Long and Short Form Animation Series to Meet Heightened Demand for Animation from Linear TV and Streaming Platforms
Initial Projects Include First Look Deal with VIS KIDS, a Division of ViacomCBS Networks International; Seibert to Also Remain Executive Producer on Netflix hit Castlevania, and the Highly-Anticipated Return of Bee & PuppyCat Coming Soon to Netflix
New York, NY (February 23, 2021) – Fred Seibert, the driving force behind some of the most successful and iconic animation projects of our time, announced today he is launching a brand new production entity – FredFilms.  The new company is designed to help meet the increased demand for premium adult and kid animation programming from traditional linear networks and a wide range of streaming platforms.  For this new venture, Seibert has already struck a first look deal with VIS KIDS, a division of ViacomCBS Networks International, with additional projects expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Seibert’s credits and achievements have established him as a true legend in animation and a visionary in television branding. During his illustrious career, Seibert has discovered, cultivated and launched some the biggest and freshest animated series across TV and streaming networks.  He has served as executive producer for such blockbusters as Pendelton Ward’s Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors (Cartoon Network and Cartoon Hangover), Butch Hartman’s The Fairly Oddparents (Nickelodeon), Kevin Kolde’s and Warren Ellis’ Castlevania (Netflix), and Natasha Allegri’s Bee & Puppycat (the most backed animated series in Kickstarter history). While serving as President of Hanna-Barbera, Seibert oversaw the development of a string of hits from The Powerpuff Girls to Dexter’s Laboratory.  He has also helped discover some of the hottest animated talent on the planet including Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky, Pendelton Ward and Seth MacFarlane.
In addition to his success in animation, Seibert has overseen some of the most celebrated television branding achievements of all-time.  As the founding creative director of MTV, he  developed the unforgettable “I Want My MTV” campaign. Additionally, he architected the original Nickelodeon and Nick-at-Nite branding and promotion.
Out of the gate FredFilms has finalized a first look deal with VIS KIDS, a division of ViacomCBS Networks International.  Through the agreement, FredFilms will present at least three projects to the studio with a goal of at least one being put into development.  Seibert will also continue to serve in an executive producing role on two major Netflix projects – the breakout hit Castlevania which will launch its fourth season later this year, and the cult sensation Bee & Puppycat whose new iteration Bee & Puppycat: Lost in Space is coming soon to Netflix.
“Animation is having yet another golden age, driven, as always, by new technologies. The rise of streaming platforms has given animation studios a whole new landscape to have their innovative voices and stories told. And the success that many projects are finding in streaming, both adult and kid targeted series, has re-opened the eyes of executives at linear networks to invest in animation.  With that said, I thought now was the perfect time to set up a new production company in which I can focus 100% of my energies on what I truly love to do: nurture fresh talent and emerging voices, and help bring to life amazing, cutting-edge animation,” said Seibert.
"At VIS KIDS, we are committed to the development of new creative partnerships and deepening our relationships with talent to bring unique, fun and creative stories to life. We look forward to our partnership with Fred Seibert and FREDFILMS, as we further this commitment and establish VIS KIDS as an industry leader in kids content,” said Nina Hahn, Head of VIS KIDS and Senior Vice President, Production & Development, Nickelodeon International.
Seibert is currently building out his executive team and has already brought on former Crunchyroll writer/producer and seasoned graphic novel editor Casey Gonzalez as his development director and Sarah Kessler as Manager, Development.
He is interested in hearing pitches from creators.  More information about FredFilms can be found at fredfilms.com.

ViacomCBS has suspended the two powerful heads of its TV station group, Peter Dunn and David Friend, amid widening allegations that the pair cultivated an environment that included bullying female managers and blocking efforts to hire and retain Black journalists.
In a statement late Monday, CBS said the two veteran executives were “placed on administrative leave, pending the results of a third-party investigation into issues that include those raised in a recent Los Angeles Times report. CBS is committed to a diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace where all voices are heard, claims are investigated and appropriate action is taken where necessary.”
CBS took action just one day after The Times published an investigation that detailed how senior executives disparaged CBS station employees in Philadelphia, the nation’s fourth-largest media market. Dunn ran the Philadelphia station from 2002 through 2004 before several promotions. For the last 11 years, he has been in charge of CBS’ 28 television stations across the country, including KCBS-TV Channel 2 and KCAL-TV Channel 9 in Los Angeles.
The division has 2,800 employees and provides local news for millions of viewers who live in cities where CBS owns a TV station, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago and New York.
Hours after The Times’ published its investigation Sunday, the National Assn. of Black Journalists met with high-level ViacomCBS executives, including CBS Entertainment Chief Executive George Cheeks and ViacomCBS Executive Vice President Marva Smalls, who oversees the company’s diversity and inclusion efforts. During that meeting, NABJ leaders said they raised other complaints and demanded that CBS fire Dunn and one of his lieutenants, Friend, the senior vice president for news.
In a statement, NABJ criticized CBS’ hiring practices at its flagship TV station, WCBS-TV Channel 2 in New York, saying the station only recently hired a full-time Black male reporter in New York after five years without one. NABJ also said that WCBS has just one full-time Black female reporter and only one Black news producer in New York. In addition to overseeing the entire CBS TV stations chain, Dunn has managed WCBS since 2005.
Cheeks, who took over operations of the legendary broadcasting company last March, sent a note to the CBS staff a little before 7:30 p.m. Pacific time to announce the move, acknowledging that “these have been a difficult few days.”
Cheeks said that CBS Chief Operating Officer Bryon Rubin would assume the leadership of the TV station group on an interim basis. “Bryon is very familiar with your business and ready to support your efforts.”
He also noted the meeting with the NABJ delegation.
“We pledged to continue a dialogue with the NABJ on our best path forward,” Cheeks wrote.
The Times report shed new light on CBS’ $55-million purchase of a small independent television station, WLNY-TV Channel 55 on New York’s Long Island in 2011 — a deal that included a membership in the ultra-exclusive Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. The founder and previous owner of WLNY, entrepreneur Michael Pascucci, threw in a membership at his 300-acre retreat as part of the TV station sale.
CBS said the Sebonack membership belonged to the company but that it was put in Dunn’s name because the club did not have corporate memberships. The company said the membership was used to entertain clients and business partners.
Current and former CBS executives also questioned the thoroughness of CBS’ high-profile 2018 investigation into corporate culture, saying the outside law firms were aware of allegations about Dunn and Friend. The Times review of court filings, CBS’ internal communications and interviews with two dozen current and former CBS television station employees found that many were troubled by the outcome of the investigation and questioned the company’s commitment to cleaning up its culture.

ABC News names Kimberly Godwin as its new president. Kimberly Godwin, a veteran CBS News executive, was named the next president of ABC News on Wednesday, making her the first Black woman to lead a major broadcast network’s news division. Ms. Godwin replaces James Goldston, who announced his departure from ABC in January. Her appointment was guided by Peter Rice, the chairman of general entertainment at The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC. She will begin in her job in early May. Her promotion is just one of several changes in the world of broadcast news as the industry adjusts to the end of Donald J. Trump’s presidency and to shifting viewing habits among audiences who are showing signs of fatigue after years of devouring TV news. CBS News is expected to announce in the coming days a successor for its own president, Susan Zirinsky, who is leaving to take on a producing role at ViacomCBS. CNN’s president, Jeff Zucker, said he will depart the cable network by the end of the year, and Rashida Jones recently became the new president of MSNBC. When Ms. Jones took over MSNBC, she became the first Black woman to run one of the three major cable news channels. Ms. Godwin, who most recently served as CBS’s executive vice president of news, joins ABC at a moment of strength for the network. ABC’s “World News Tonight,” anchored by David Muir, is the top-rated evening newscast, averaging 9.4 million viewers for the season. It is the widest lead ABC has held over the “NBC Nightly News”, which averages 7.9 million viewers, since 1995, and the biggest lead over CBS’s evening newscast (5.8 million viewers) in at least 29 years. Likewise, “Good Morning America” on ABC is still the No. 1 morning show in viewers, though it continues to trail the “Today” show on NBC among adults 25-54 years old, the adult age group most important to advertisers. “Throughout Kim’s career in global news organizations and local newsrooms, she has distinguished herself as a fierce advocate for excellence, collaboration, inclusion and the vital role of accurate and transparent news reporting,” Mr. Rice, the Disney executive, said in a statement. Ms. Godwin said, “I am honored to take on this stewardship and excited for what we will achieve together.” News divisions at ABC and elsewhere are facing a drastically changed news cycle. Cable news networks have seen declining ratings in the last two months, and audiences for all of the morning shows and evening newscasts are down considerably from a year ago, when the onset of the pandemic spurred significant interest. ABC News also grappled with internal tensions last year, after an investigation backed complaints about racially insensitive comments made by a longtime top executive, Barbara Fedida, who has since left the network. Regina Hall Gets Candid On Her Showtime Deal, ‘Black Monday’ And Turning 50
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/regina-hall-gets-candid-on-her-showtime-deal-black-monday-and-turning-50-2/
Regina Hall Gets Candid On Her Showtime Deal, ‘Black Monday’ And Turning 50
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Scary Movie, the comedy horror spoof that gave many of us our first real glimpse at the standout humor only Regina Hall can bring to the screen. Two decades later, the experienced actress and producer has built a career of longevity, something Showtime saw and knew to act upon. This past October, Hall inked a first-look deal with Showtime to develop and produce television projects under her production company Rh Negative.
Amy Israel, Executive Vice President of Scripted Programming at Showtime, has worked very closely with Hall on the premium channel’s hit show Black Monday and has witnessed her talents firsthand. “It was her time and time for her to branch out and step into the next chapter of her career,” Israel reveals to Forbes about Hall. “Showtime continues to be a beacon for visionary artists and storytellers who are looking to create ambitious shows and shows that are groundbreaking. Regina is one of the most authentic artists I’ve worked with. She is a force of nature. She is also a generous artist that makes everyone around her better.”
After hearing Israel’s kind words about her, Hall responded to Forbes by saying, “One of the things that I love about Amy is her honesty. I can say Amy, quietly between you and I, what do you think? And she’s very encouraging saying We need to get your voice out there and what are we going to do to do that?”
Showtime has already announced a third season for Black Monday, a fictional comedy about a group of outsiders who take on the old-boys club of Wall Street in the 1980s, a project Hall not only stars in as “Dawn” but she also produces. “I love my co-stars, I love my cast. I love our showrunners and our producers,” Hall continues. “Being able to work with people who are so collaborative, which is another thing I love about Showtime. They encourage that, the collaboration. That for me has been so rewarding and has helped me grow so much as an artist. And of course I love ‘Dawn’ because she’s a great character to play. Driven and complex. She’s not all good and she’s not all bad and I love playing with all the colors that make ‘Dawn’ who she is. It’s a great ride. I’m always excited to see what they write for her.”
Even with the ink still drying from Hall’s first-look deal with Showtime, she already has her sights on the projects she wants to make and the people she wants to work beside. “One of the things I’m interested in is sharing untold stories. Stories that are not widely known to the masses but are incredibly impactful. Some of those will be comedies, there will be dramas, there will be hybrids of both. They will be stories from all different kinds of communities and ethnicities. Hopefully they will be richly entertaining, but it’s not just in front of the camera. I want voices behind the camera that are writing those stories, giving perspectives and insight. And there will be some that are just fiction and fun. I can’t wait to discover new talent and find and explore so many people who really are needing a window of opportunity. I certainly look forward to discovering a lot of performers and writers and everything that you need behind the lens.”
Hall also spoke to the topic of diversity in Hollywood today and how her latest opportunity with Showtime (as well as her production company Rh Negative signing a six-film deal with Showtime’s parent company ViacomCBS just last month) will allow her to be a part of that progress. “It takes time for things to change but if we collectively all work together to figure out how we can expand the voices in the world and what kind of stories we can tell, we’ll be able to diversify in front and behind the camera in many ways that still make storytelling interesting and smart and creative. I mean, that’s what I would want Rh Negative to do.”
Hall turns 50 on December 12, something she jokes that she is “not even prepared” for. When asked how she has grown as a professional over the past decade, Hall says, “I have grown a lot in despite of the number (laughs). I couldn’t be more grateful to be where I am. It’s a continuous journey of learning because I have learned so much more now behind the scenes and I have been afforded the opportunity to play different roles and work with all different types of artists. It has been incredibly exciting, in a way that I don’t know that I thought it would be. Especially for women, you hear as you get older, you work less. I’m grateful that it has been just the opposite.”
