Mgła - Exercises in Futility (2015)
Tumblr media
Mgła have defined what contemporary black metal should sound like through their 2015 release, Exercises in Futility. This album features six tracks, each bearing the title of the album, followed by Roman numerals; a trend that Mgła have carried with them since their inception. The album places a strong emphasis on atmosphere and musical space. While embracing the overall theme of bleakness this album strives for, they have also been able to convey along with it the beauty that lies beneath this feeling of hopelessness.
The first song starts off with the thunderous vocal line “the great truth is there isn't one,” setting a precedent for what can be expected throughout the rest of the album.
The lyrics throughout the album are grim, poetic, and introspective, mostly dealing with themes of the futility of mankind's endeavours, and thoughts of despair and helplessness.
One thing that this album does particularly well is something that I can only describe as a cacophony of sound. It originates with fast tremolo picked guitar riffs backed by aggressive drums and cymbals, that lead into a much slower and more melodic and catchy guitar riff that breaks the aggression of the vocals and instrumentation. It offers as sort of a release of emotions from the lyrics of Mgła's songs. This of course creates a lot of space in the music as it doesn't feature any vocals, but it feels as though Mgła write their music to intentionally create this space and make it the sole focus of the song's narrative. It's a style that is extremely Mgła-esque as it can be heard in their other releases as well, but I would argue that it's been perfected in this album. This signature style of riffing can be heard most prevalent in songs II and V.
This album is one that has shaped my interpretation of how beautiful black metal can sound, and the feeling of solace and comfort it can bring.

Discover the Best Exercises for Mobility:
Hip Flexor Stretch: Start in a kneeling position with one foot forward and the knee bent at a 90-degree angle. Slowly lean forward, keeping your back straight, until you feel a stretch in the front of your hip. Hold for 30 seconds, then switch sides.
Thoracic Spine Rotation: Begin in a seated position with your legs extended in front of you. Place one hand behind your head and the other hand on the floor beside you. Rotate your torso towards the hand behind your head, reaching your elbow towards the ceiling. Hold for a few seconds, then return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side.
Deep Squat: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and lower into a deep squat, keeping your chest up and your back straight. Hold onto a stable surface if needed for balance. Hold the squat position for 30 seconds to 1 minute, focusing on relaxing into the stretch and breathing deeply.
Calf Stretch: Stand facing a wall with one foot forward and the other foot back. Lean forward, keeping your back leg straight and your heel on the ground, until you feel a stretch in your calf. Hold for 30 seconds, then switch sides.
Shoulder Dislocates: Hold a broomstick or resistance band with both hands, palms facing down and hands wider than shoulder-width apart. Slowly raise the stick or band overhead and behind your back, keeping your arms straight. Continue until you feel a stretch in your shoulders, then reverse the movement. Repeat for 10-15 repetitions.

As if it wasn't a lifetime
Spent on connecting the dots
There was no pattern
As if the irony was more
Than a defense mechanism
And we could actually laugh for a change
As if steel hooks in our backs
Were more than a nuisance
And we could actually feel something

The Most Ridiculous Sentence I've Read Today:
There were in total just over 1000 Ai generations that went into the completion of the final image.
I can't comprehend the desperation behind this declaration. Someone ran Stable Diffusion a thousand times to get a picture of a girl in a folk dress right and in large enough resolution. A thousand fucking I2Is, upscales, inpaints, bashing everything together in Photoshop, the works. For one image.
This is way past the point at which AI image generation stops making sense. Time, computing power, sheer fucking insistence on making something uncopyrightable, unsellable and otherwise ethically dubious look right. Why would you do this?!
I'm thinking that even fixing stuff manually would take less time than yanking the lever a thousand times. Doing things like this proves nothing about image generators, if anything, it puts their main selling points into question if not outright proves them false. Like "Hey, I spent over sixteen hours yanking the lever and nudging the outputs in Photoshop to get a technically decent pic of Heidi prancing through a forest using an AI generator!" With the "sixteen hours" figure assuming that one generation run takes a minute, which heavily depends on the hardware used and output resolution, and entirely ignoring any preparation using external software.
For comparison, I don't think I hit 50 generations trying to make Tiny Dancer, even with multiple runs to get the legs right and mixing and matching the outputs in Photoshop. If you're willing to run the generator a thousand times to tweak one picture, you could as well learn to draw.

Something I wish that everyone would remember forever is that people can be different from each other, and that is a Good thing. This isn't just the obvious ones either. "If you're still living with your parents and longing for love at 40 you need to work on yourself" maybe, or maybe people are different from each other. "None of you have ever fucked on here" some of us have, some haven't, people are different from each other. "autistic people DO have empathy" some do, some don't, people are different from each other. "You should always" "it's always healthy to" "everyone can always" there is no always!! People are different from each other

in light of that last ask, would you ever consider drawing Machete enjoying a little treat? Maybe licking cream off his snoot after devouring a sweet, or laughing at something unexpectedly silly, or being caught up in the beauty of something and showing some wonder...? Glimpse of happy Machete
(which, as an angst writer, is also a large part of how to make the bad stuff hit. Rip that happiness away, make a smile too ephemeral, etc. Joy as the most fragile of things, that can't be pursued and comes on its own terms...)
I love how you put it, "joy is the most fragile of things and comes on it's own terms".
I do, in fact, have a bunch of happy/content/uncharacteristically genuine Machete pieces underway. If I can keep up this surge of motivation I've been having during the past five weeks or so, you should see them soon.
