FGF 101: Setting Your Baseline Budget

If you’re a working class person, chances are you’re intimately aware of how much money is in your bank account at any one time. We have to be vigilant: our pennies matter more to us than millions of dollars do to our capitalist counterparts in the upper class.

That said, we’re unfortunately given little in the way of financial education growing up. The result? All our street smarts about money end up going by the wayside for want of some simple tactics we could be using to improve our finances.

Nothing I’m about to go over is particularly groundbreaking, nor is it a substitute for real institutional change that alleviates the pressures of a capitalist system from the middle and lower classes. But these tips and tricks are harm mitigation tactics: behaviors and tools you can use to help yourself survive in the system we’ve got, while we work to make a better one.

What’s the point of a budget?

Your budget is a planning and tracking tool. In our busy lives, it can sometimes get away from us how much money is coming in and out of our pockets, and for what. This can result in us using our money in ways we’d rather not, or lock us out of using it in ways that would benefit us.

But a budget isn’t a set of handcuffs. The point of making a budget isn’t to shame yourself for how you’ve spent money in the past, because shame is a terrible motivator for enacting lasting change in our behavior. For this reason, budgets that are needlessly restrictive aren’t useful. You’re human. You’ll make mistakes, especially in the beginning of your budgeting journey, and your priorities will change over time. Allowing yourself the room to grow and change will lead to the most success.

Bottom line, the budget is the tool we use to give ourselves peace of mind in our spending. Can you afford a pastry with your morning coffee this Friday? Can you splurge on that cute new dress you saw online last week? What about an unexpected boys’ night out tomorrow? A well-done budget answers these questions for you, and more. It’s the tool that helps you take care of what you need to do, so you can better enjoy what you want to do.

What do I need for my budget?

The first things you’ll need to make your first budget are practical, though the method I’ll suggest is a little counterintuitive. I want you to keep track of your spending.

That’s it. For the first month of your new financial journey, act like your own personal anthropologist. Keep track of how much you get paid, and when, and do the same for your expenses. You can do this manually, in a notebook, or keep a spreadsheet on your phone or computer. There are even a number of free apps that can help you track spending (we’ll go over those in another article). Either way, we’re not looking to make changes this month.

Our first month is all about learning our habits. You can't change something for the better if you don't understand what's going wrong with it. But that's okay. With just a little attention, we can learn all we need to about our spending habits.

FGF 100: What the Fuck is Fat Girl Finance?

We’re inundated daily with bullshit financial advice. Stop drinking lattes and you’ll be able to avoid a house? Credit cards are why you’re so poor, or is it that they’re so good you should be ripping up your debit card? If you didn’t start saving for retirement as a fetus, you’re too far behind, and if you’re putting money into the wrong investments, you might as well not invest at all.

And atop it all, we’re living in a financial system that exploits us at every turn.

So what’s a girl (gender neutral) to do?

It’s true that working people are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to becoming financially stable, compared to our capitalist counterparts. But that’s not to say that we’re completely powerless. There are things that you, individually, can do to improve your own financial situation and become more confident in managing your own money. And there are things we can do together as a community to help reduce the harm the system is able to do to ourselves and to others.

That’s where I come in. The goal of this project is to demystify personal finance, minus the normal bootstraps bullshit most personal finance gurus espouse. My aim is to help you mitigate the harm you’re exposed to in our capitalist system, and help give you the tools to change that system for the better.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be publishing several basic guides: how to create your first budget, the different methods for paying off debt, how credit and credit cards work, and the basics of investing. From there, the rest is largely up to you. I’ll be opening up slots for one-one-one coaching, and putting out more in-depth current events articles pertaining to causes, bills, and politicians you can support to help ease financial burdens on the working class on a larger scale, too.

If we all work together, we can change our future and our neighbors’ future. And for the better, too.
