A few thoughts on Thrawn’s portrayal in Ahsoka
First thing first: I think they absolutely nailed him.
Lars Mikkelsen is perfect and I don’t think there could ever been another actor fit to bring Thrawn alive. We’re talking about the same man who got an Annie Nomitation for his voice performance in Rebels. He knows the character, he knows how Thrawn speaks, the way he moves, he knows how to use silence... and he absolutely kills it!
And, let’s forget about the new canon for a moment, shall we?
This Thrawn looks like he just jumped out of “Heir to the Empire”.
Looks like Filoni’s going for the more Moriarty-like, more evil Legends Thrawn. And, as much as I love the new books, that’s the Thrawn we first met and loved, the character who became the standard bearer of the Expanded Universe, one of the greatest villains of the franchise second only to Darth Vader and one of the best characters in Sci-fi fiction. That’s a guy who’s politely conferring with you a moment before and the second later he’s having a tractor beam technician be dismembered by his bodyguard.
Pellaeon never even saw Rukh move. Pieterson certainly never had time to scream. From farther down the crew pit came the sound of someone trying valiantly not to be sick. Thrawn glanced over Pellaeon's shoulder gain and gestured, and the silence was further broken by the sound of a pair of stormtroopers coming forward. "Dispose of it," the Grand Admiral ordered them, turning away from Pieterson's crumpled body and pinning Colclazure with a stare. "The error, Ensign," he told the other softly, "has now been corrected. You may begin training a replacement." Timothy Zahn, Heir to the Empire (1991)
The infinite pauses Mikkelsen makes, with Thrawn just staring at his interlocutor in silence, are so unnerving and so perfectly in character. Pick any page of the Thrawn trilogy where the Grand Admiral’s talking to Pellaeon and you’ll find the same feeling of fear and malaise.
And guys, Thrawn was never meant to be likeable. He’s not a puppy, he’s a wolf. He’s someone to be admired for his tactical genius, to be respected for his abilities; you can understand his reasons and his way of thinking but still he’s someone to be wary of and to be feared. You can talk with Thrawn. He will listen and will understand your point, but once you find yourself between him and his goal, you’re dead.
Not surprisingly, Grand Admiral Thrawn was inspired by General Rommel. And they indeed are very similar (I might say they’re basically clones ^^): both military geniuses coming from the lower ranks of society and raising to the highest ranks of the army by sheer talent and yet pretty much naive when it comes to politics and highly opposed by other high ranking officers driven mostly by pure envy (hell! Rommel was taken in higher regard by the British than by his fellow German high ranking officers! In fact, Rommel kept his rank only because Hitler liked him, just like Thrawn did because Palpatine liked him).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Erwin Rommel and Mitth'raw'nuruodo are basically the same person in two different universes...
Both Thrawn and Rommel are well mannered, honourable and very professional officers, considerate to their troops and respectful of their adversaries and as such highly esteemed by both their men and their enemies. That doesn’t change the fact that they both have their fair amount of atrocities on their shoulders, they work for the most evil governments of their age and both have pretty close personal relationships with the Emperor and with Adolf Hitler. And still. You can fight on the wrong side of history and still be an honorable man.
That said, I’ve read complains about Thrawn's physique and yes, I didn’t like his belly either when he first showed up but that was just for a fraction of a second ‘cause the moment he opened his mouth I was totally sold.
Why? Because physical prowess isn’t Thrawn’s main characteristic. Yes, he’s a very well trained warrior and a martial arts expert, but the reason why he’s such a great character is his charisma, it’s his brain and, if I'm right, the Thrawn we have in Ahsoka is the evil cat- ops, I mean ysalamiri-petting Thrawn ^^.
And guys, people do age, even chiss. Thrawn’s 70 years old, he has every right to get old and look old. And that belly looks like a very deliberate choice to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ten years separate Rebels Thrawn from Ahsoka Thrawn, ten years and an inter-galactical hyperspace jump. People change. And get old.
Also, you must consider the fact that Thrawn was wrapped in the purrgill's tantacles when they jumped into hyperspace, so it's safe to assume that he substained heavy injuries and that his body was heavily affected by it. We also don't know how well he fared while stranded for ten years in an unknown galaxy, meddling with stuff he should stay kilometers away from (let's face it: it never ends well when he starts meddling with the Force or anything he has no real grip or power on).
Tumblr media
I don't know, but I don't think chiss are made to fly in hyperspace.
So, on a closing note... is Thrawn's make-up perfect? No.
Is that such a big problem? No. What the make-up doesn’t achieve, the actor’s performance will.
And hear me out, there is room for improvement and I’m sure they will fill the gap. They did with Ahsoka… remember how everyone criticized her lekku in The Mandalorian? That was because of an actual, practical reason, but they did manage to correct it and they did improve it. Ahsoka looks great now. And just how they did with her, they will improve Thrawn’s appearance as well.
It’s impossible to nail something at first try. And it's impossible to appease everyone.
I work as a digital artist and I can tell you that sometimes you just can’t do the best you can, because maybe the budget doesn’t allow it or there’s just too little time to do it (or people just keep asking change after change 😒), but once you’ve got the basis, and I think they’ve got pretty solid basis with Thrawn, to improve the look of him adding details and correcting those little errors is gonna be a much easier job and you’ll, see, he’s gonna look much better in the next season.
Sometimes things don’t need to be perfect to work. And Mikkelsen’s Thrawn works, because it’s Mikkelsen and because it’s Thrawn.

In the grand expanse of the cosmos, where stars flicker with ancient wisdom and galaxies pulse with the heartbeat of creation, there exists a realm where imagination reigns supreme. Within this boundless expanse, there emerged a craftsman named Dave Filoni, a bard whose tales once resonated with the harmonious chords of the Force. In the beginning, his hands sculpted worlds, his words breathed life into characters, and his vision illuminated the darkest corners of a galaxy far, far away.
Oh, how we marveled at his ingenuity! The Clone Wars, his magnum opus, unfolded like an epic poem, each episode a verse in a cosmic ballad. Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, and the clones—they danced through his narrative with grace, their stories etched into the very stars. It was Filoni’s storytelling that rekindled the spirit of Star Wars, bringing forth a resurgence of hope among the faithful.
But as the wheel of time turned, a shadow crept over Filoni’s creations. The nefarious specter of greed began to weave its tendrils around the heart of his storytelling. The allure of profit beckoned, whispering promises of wealth and power. And thus, the purity of Filoni’s artistry began to wane, eclipsed by the insatiable hunger of corporate coffers.
We, the ardent admirers of Filoni’s craft, find ourselves in a state of profound lamentation. Where once there was depth, there now lies a barren landscape of shallow plots and hollow characters. The live-action series under Filoni’s stewardship, once hailed as the heralds of a new era, now stand as monuments to avarice. These productions, bereft of the soul that defined his animated triumphs, reek of profit-driven decisions. Substance has been forsaken for spectacle, and intricate storytelling sacrificed upon the altar of easy fan service.
Yet, in the depths of our sorrow, we extend a hesitant hand towards Filoni, seeking to understand the nature of his fall from grace. Is he a captive bard, his creativity held hostage against his will? We theorize, not out of malice, but out of a desperate desire to preserve the belief in his intrinsic brilliance. Could it be that his hands are tied, his creativity stifled under breakneck deadlines and profit-hungry overlords? The very thought chills the heart, for it suggests that the shackles of capitalism have ensnared even the most luminous minds.
And so, until the truth unveils itself, we stand resolute in our condemnation of the avaricious grip of the Disney corporation. The gloved hands of a mouse have become instruments of oppression, throttling the imagination and desecrating the sacred lore we hold dear. The weight of this corporate yoke stifles not only Filoni’s genius but also the collective dreams of fans worldwide.
In the echoes of our discontent, there lingers a glimmer of hope—a hope that one day, Filoni will break free from these chains, that he will once again wield his storytelling prowess with unbridled passion and unwavering dedication. Until then, we raise our voices in defiance, calling for the restoration of creativity, integrity, and the boundless spirit of storytelling that the Star Wars universe deserves.
manifesto anon you genuinely brought my mood up, it's been such a crazy fucking day, sorry I've been delaying answering this but it's always so funny to read your little manifestos they make me giggle

Let me answer your question in simplest terms; Luke was intended to be Force-sensitive from day one and his character built up around that. Sabine's Force-sensitivity is a big fat retcon that overshadows the infinitely more interesting aspects of her character.
1. Did ANY of you people hear Dave Filoni ever say Sabine WASN'T a Force sensitive? Maybe he always planned for her to be a Jedi? Where is the interview that said he DIDN'T plan it?
2. Intended? Like the way Leia was set up as the sister of Luke AND then set up as a Force user from EP 1? Like Vader was set up as Luke's dad in EP 1 too?
3. I would like SW fans to stop rewriting history, and stop pretending as if George Lucas had a perfect plan for the SW universe that DIDN'T change after the first movie & every few years after that.
4. There is enough plausible/fan wrangling theorising material from "Rebels" to make it work. I love how SW fans can bend backwards to prove some obscure fan/head canon with literally a flash of a pic or some one liner, or a look at a character etc. But don't wanna work with Kanan & Hera talking about Sabine being stubborn and blocked in CANON while training how to use the dark sabre with JEDI fundamentals. But dude, let's theorise ALL the people that are under the mask of whatever character.
5. Personal preference - I like Sabine as a Mandalorian Jedi. I like the fact it took her years to resolve the conflict of her guilt, her heritage, trauma etc. And once again, Mandalorian fucking Jedi - fucking awesome. And it is curious to me you talk about the "interesting aspects" of her character but name none of them. As if being a Force user somehow removes all those "interesting aspects", makes them somehow less.
Here, let me help you list those aspects, and how being a Force user negates nor overshadows NONE of those aspects:
She was a child genius who developed a weapon that killed her own people, she had to live with that guilt & trauma.
She is a Mandalorian who wanted to express herself in a different way - her art.
She ran from her family, her culture, her homeworld, she abandoned them in their time of need. That's a tonne of fucking guilt.
Her Mandalorian upbringing ingrained in her certain ideas about the Jedi, most likely not positively. Something she had to resolve & work through. And DEFINITELY became a block in her training to becoming a Jedi. In other word - CONFLICT that makes her so much more interesting.
Her guilt over not being able to save Kanan, compounded by letting Ezra walk into certain death.
Her guilt and trauma over her family and her people killed on Mandalore, and not being able to save them.
Her SENSE of inadequacy she can't compare to Ezra in the Force, can't compare to the thousands of youngling who became Jedi.
Her sense of being a DISAPPOINTMENT to Ahsoka, to Hera, to the fact she can't find Ezra.
All of these interesting aspects of her character are STILL THERE in her character, it LITERALLY powers the motivations and choices she makes in the show. She is just now also a fucking Jedi Padawan to Ahsoka fucking Tano.
But sure, her Force ability overshadows her "interesting aspects", and not like it make her so much more fucking interesting and awesome.
ETA: Also, thank you anon, I honestly didn't think I loved Sabine as much as I did till I started thinking about your question. She is truly awesome.
A true inspiration. Honestly what ALL Mando Jedi should be moving forward. Also, her immaculate makeup, and the colour decal on her armour is bitchin'. I aim to be like her - enraging people with my awesome.

Fucking hell, Filoni has gotten lazy.
Thrawn - We must leave as quickly as possible. And kill Ahsoka and her comrades.
Also Thrawn - Let's not send our full forces against them. Only a few TIE fighters and one squad of stormtroopers. Oh, but not at once.
Still Thrawn - Let's also keep the Chimera docked to the easily accessible tower while we do all of this. No need to go to a higher altitude, let alone into orbit.
Thrawn again - In fact, it's best if we continue to delay even though all the cargo is loaded, just so we can create more dramatic tension.
Thrawn, too - As you can see, Ahsoka Tano, my dastardly scheme has left you stranded here, which I have been fine with this entire time. Muahahahaha. *Hyperspace jump*
Seriously. Where's the logic and pacing of this finale, to say nothing of Thrawn's ruthlessly effective genius?
Nonexistent. Because this is what happens when you hand the keys to the kingdom to the absolute most basic, boring ass fanboy dudebros.

"The genius of Thrawn is that he's not Darth Vader. He doesn't even try to be," Filoni told us. "He doesn't have the Force. But he's smart and he's calculating. He's like a Moriarty, he's going to outthink you and out chess move you, so those are the things that I really liked."
HE’S LIKE A MORIARTY. Listen, even if I didn’t know that Tim Zahn wrote Thrawn with Sherlock- not Moriarty- in mind, I would still see the influence because I’m not a goddamn moron. And Moriarty doesn’t exist without Sherlock, so my question is, WHOMST is the Sherlock, in Filoni’s mind???
Please please PLEASE tell me he thinks it’s Ahsoka. He does, doesn’t he?? The unintentional comedy of this show is just too much for me.
Tired: Ahsoka is Gandalf
Wired: Ahsoka is Sherlock

The Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Anger. Pure rage.
Do. Not. Get. Me. Started.
Too late.
What you Should Not Do with one of the most popular franchises in the entire world is green light a sequel trilogy with No Plan except to have 3 different directors and a truckload of money.
What you Should Not Do is give JJ Abrams free rein of anything. You know, it’s not like you have a whole bunch of genius creators who know and understand Star Wars like the back of their hand. But sure pick the flashy guy. Whatever.
What happens when you do the things you Should Not Do is you end up with a three part pissing contest between directors and jumbled up story that not only retcons itself but rewrites previous canon. Also everyone hates it.
But what do I know? I’m not a multi billion dollar media conglomerate or a flashy cash grab director.
Dave Filoni is going to receive all of the blessings of all of the gods in the afterlife.

You know I make fun of Dave Filoni a lot, but I’ve really got to hand it to him. The way he made sure the Darksaber was quickly passed back to Bo-Katan as soon as someone else got their hands on it and than having it be destroyed was a flash of strategic genius on his part.
He not only shut down the possibility of Din becoming leader instead of Bo-Katan, by breaking the Darksaber he made sure there’s no possible avenue through which someone could write about a different character becoming leader. Because he’s removed their ability to legitimately challenge Bo-Katan’s claim.
So now even if someone does try to write a plot about someone else becoming the leader, Dave can just say they’re a usurper and have Bo-Katan stage her fourth “claiming her rightful throne” plot. Really, I’ve got to hand it to him. Getting rid of the mere possibility of someone being able to challenge Bo-Katan’s rule in the future is so petty it’s actually kind of brilliant.

idk if this is an unwelcome rant or anything but I saw your anti ahs0ka posts from july and I’m just….so frustrated. I don’t want to sound like a dudebro but as someone whose favorite SW character is Luke I just can’t stand Star Wars anymore. I personally didn’t like him in tlj, but I could accept it—but then they just sort of kept chipping at him through every new piece of media. He’s strange in mando/tbobf, no one will join his temple despite apparently all of these older force sensitives surviving rotj, even obi-wan is retconned to know leia more. now this shit w this show, where #she is the self-insert in thrawn stuff. also you don’t even have to be FS anymore, etc etc. the “important Jedi lineage” is now obi-wan-anakin-ahs0ka, bc who even cares about luke amirite. it just sucks because I did genuinely used to like her, but with every new thing it could not be more clear that narratively she should have died bc now the whole gffa’s story is hers
I'd love to say I'm above petty rant but I am SO not, your rant is most welcome. If you don't have anything nice to say about Ahsoka, come sit by me. 😉 (Honestly I'm just happy to see other people acknowledging what a poorly written character she is when I've been saying this since the Rebels season 2 finale. I definitely felt like the only one back then.)
More seriously.... yeah, I do get the feeling of everything you loved about Star Wars being chipped away. I hope those who do enjoy it have fun and all, I don't begrudge anyone that, but I can't lie, I do kinda feel the same way. Like it's all being rewritten Filoni-style. And George Lucas he is not, no matter how much he thinks he is. Also I don't presume to know Timothy Zahn's feelings but I still think it's shitty and disrespectful as hell to carve a big hole out of the wonderful, iconic Thrawn trilogy and plop Ahsoka in. It's becoming REAL obvious that Filoni isn't the creative genius he's hailed as, he strip mines Legends for ideas and then gets the credit.
At this point I almost rather they leave Luke alone. Han is my BOY and they already did him so dirty (left Leia, returned to smuggling invalidating all his character development in the OT, gets a crappy death from his shitty incel son - I did like Solo but it was too little to late) so I 100% get your feelings there. It's like Disney doesn't even care how important these characters are so many people in their rush to replace them with their new, safely copyrighted and controlled characters. And ofc Filoni props his TCW OCs over all. Just look at how Mando S3 had Din and Grogu's story trashed so Girlboss Barbie Bo could feature instead. I'm not sure why they're so resistant to paying writers, they clearly need some new ones.

I rewatched Twilight of the Apprentice and I am absolutely fucking destroyed. It just hit different the second time around. Kevin Kiner on the score killed it. The raw emotions I felt from beginning to end was just as amazing as the first time.
