I've been watching so many Godzilla movies since I lost my job and anyway I'm almost done watching the original 1954 Godzilla and it actually is kind of a fantastic movie, like despite the dated special effects, I think it holds up pretty well! Even with the special effects!

I like to put myself in the mindset of the people who watched that movie for the first time in 1954 and yeah man, I'd be sitting there like "OMG HOW'D THEY DO THAT"

Fave Godzilla movie so far is Shin Godzilla. Kicking myself that I didn't get big into Godzilla until NOW when I could have gotten into it when Godzilla Minus One was still in theaters but nooooooo (but as SOON as its available to either stream or pirate, I'm watching it immediately. I mean technically I can watch it right now on kissmovies, thats where I've been watching most all of these movies, but its terrible quality and the sound is bad so I don't want to watch it until an HD version is available)

Anyway the monsterverse movies aren't my favoooorite but they have Godzilla and I'll take it. Though I don't much care for King Kong. But the King Kong: Skull Island movie was pretty good, I just prefer my boy Godzilla

The thing about Captain America: Civil War is that it's part of a trilogy about one specific man named Steve Rogers. Therefore it is supposed to be about Steve Rogers and primarily from his perspective.

It's the episode right after CATWS, and the story is supposed to directly tie in with the events of CATWS. It's hilarious (= enraging) how people just seem to conveniently overlook that little detail while talking about (or rather, shitting on) Steve's decisions and actions.

When you see him argue against the accords, you're supposed to actually remember that the government was infiltrated in the previous Cap movie and it was only two years ago. And that Steve was right in the middle of the fray.

When you see him trying to save the other supersoldiers, you're supposed to correlate that to him discovering the Winter Soldier and as shown in the last scene of CATWS, finding out everything Hydra did to Bucky.

When Steve says "He's my friend," you're supposed to remember Bucky falling from the train in CATFA, and 2014!Steve saying "even when I had nothing, I had Bucky." And you're supposed to empathise with the scrawny kid from Brooklyn who had no one but James Bucky Barnes in his corner. You're supposed to remember that Bucky would, and did follow this scrawny kid into the jaw of death.

Every single thing he does/says has a background in the previous two movies.

Now you might say "yeah but so does Tony-" yeah and tell me something, is it called "Iron Man: Civil War"? Or "Avengers: Civil War"?

Saying Steve's the bad guy in his own fucking movie is you completely missing the entire point of all three of the movies with him in the title.

It is now 10:30 and he has yet to call or text you, and you don't want to worry him, so until then you'll be waiting.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF A SMALL MISTAKE: Josef x fem!reader

Summary: The butterfly effect - the idea that small things can have big consequences. In her case, a small mistake gave her the opportunity to escape death.

Notes: English isn't my first language. I apologize for any mistake I may have made while I wrote this short story.

I didn't really plan to write any type of fanfiction or oneshot for this movie, even if I think it's fantastic (including the sequel) and unsettling, but there aren't many works out there for it - so I thought I'd try my best. And after some ideas and motivation, here it is! I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it! :)

the butterfly effect is the idea that small things can have non-linear impacts on a complex system

or: the idea that the smallest things can have big consequences

She ran out of coffee. There was none left in the small metal container she usually kept the coffee beans in, and the cheap three in one box was empty as well.

That realization hurt in the morning, especially when she woke up late and knew that she'll be late for work. And the fact that the coffee was gone made the already bad day even worse.

She should've checked it, that's what she told herself as she went through her day without her usual, great cup of coffee. The one they make at her workplace couldn't be called coffee at all and the nearest coffee shop was too far away to go there during her break.

So she had to survive without the coffein she loved.

Such a small thing. A small mistake, a usual occurance - something what can happen to anybody anytime. Yet the consequences of her not checking on the metal container on Sunday were greater than she could've ever imagined.

She was home just before seven. It was already starting to get dark and she was tired. Way too tired to care about anything, to notice the unusual things happening around her or remembering the things she had promised she'd do. She didn't notice the package on her porch, even if the box was big enough to reach past her knees. She walked past it, trying to grab her keys from her bag to open the door.

"You didn't answer my calls..." the voice was so sudden she dropped her keys as her hands shook violently, her eyes no longer tired, but wide open. Her throat felt tight as held onto her bag tightly, her knuckles turning white as she looked around on the porch, examining all the dark corners to decide where to aim with it.

It took a few seconds for her to realize she knew that voice. It wasn't a stranger even if his voice did sound strange from time to time, it was high pitched when he was excited and he was excited at the weirdest moments.

"For fucks sake, you scared the Hell out of me!" she spoke up, her voice rough - then, after she realized how rude she must've sounded, she apologized with a small, tired smile: "I had a long day, I didn't mean to shout at you."

Her expression changed, going back to its exhausted self. She let go of her bag, letting it sit on her shoulder as she crouched down to find her keys.

Then the guy she knew as Josef walked closer to her, showing her which dark corner he was hiding in. He let the shadows draw dark shapes onto his face before he too crouched down, immediately finding the keys she was looking for.

"Thank you." she said as she took them from him, standing back up to open the door.

"It's okay." he was unusually quiet as he observed her every move, even after she stepped inside, leaving the door open for him. "No movie night then?"

She stopped, for a second feeling very much awake as she gently hit her forehead with her hand.

"Fuck, I totally forgot about it." for a moment she looked like she's about to cry. "I'm one poor excuse of a friend." she kicked her shoes off and let her bag fall to the ground as she quickly disappeared into the house - her voice had an unusual pitch to it as she shouted back: "Do you want some tea or something? Hot chocolate maybe? Heck, that's the least I can do - I'm so sorry."

Even in her tired and pityful mood she still knew that in the next few seconds Josef will turn up somewhere - behind her, next to her, in the other room when she leaves the kitchen. He did that a lot, scaring her either as a plan or as an accident. This was the case that time too.

"Hot chocolate's fine." she jumped a little, her heart beating faster as his voice came from directly behind her; she could feel his breath on the back of her neck.

Although she said nothing to it, because it had became an everyday thing, she still needed a few moments to collect herself.

"Okay. Give me a moment." she whispered, the sentence having two meanings: Give me a moment to get the hot chocolate done and Give me a moment to collect myself after you scared me.

"Did you order something?" Josef asked as he walked around the kitchen, looking at all the appliences and touching some of them even if he's seen them many times before.

"What do you mean?" she furrowed her eyebrows as she got the mugs ready, not understanding his question. She didn't order anything.

"You have a package on the porch."

"Great." she muttered, her tiredness showing once again. "Must be the wrong address. But whatever, I'll deal with it tomorrow."

She couldn't see him, but she heard his breathing and his steps as she melted some chocolate and poured some milk into the mugs.

" 'You sure?"

Why wouldn't I be?

"Yeah. I've got a movie night to make up for." she smiled as she added some cream to the drinks; she then turned towards him, her smile not disappearing at all even her eyes hurt a bit. "I don't have any popcorn, but we can still watch something if it's okay."

They both looked at the other, neither of them blinking as if they'd like to win a sudden challenge. He tilted his head, examining her posture or gestures - she couldn't tell, but she felt like she's telling him more than she'd like to.

His gaze was strange. Everything was more unusual about him ever since he turned up on her porch. She didn't necessary like it, but she didn't dare to point it out either.

And then suddenly, as if someone just pressed a switch in him, he smiled. More like grined. His whole mood changed in a second - and the oddness of it activated her fight or flight reflex. The fear ran through her fast, it made her shiver and her hands twitch slightly.

She has never been afraid of him before. Maybe she should've - her instincts told her.

"It's okay." his grin stayed and it made her feel like prey. "Let's watch something."

"Yeah." it wasn't more than a whisper for herself to gain her strength back as she watched Josef leave the kitchen - she soon followed him with the mugs. "So- what'll we watch?"

"'Interview with the Vampire'?" she looked at him as she put down the mugs on the coffee table right in front of the TV, and she couldn't help but let out a tired, half-annoyed sigh despite the coldness that ran through her back.

"Again?" she asked with a small, but knowing smile and even if the weird feeling didn't leave her chest, it was still an honest one. "We watched it last week too."

"Please?"

She just shook her head with a weak smile and was already on her way to connect the old DVD player to the TV, and then look for the cheap copy of the movie. She didn't have to look for long. It was right where they left it last week after he had gotten bored and pressured her into taking a walk around the neighborhood late at night.

"All right. Just because I owe you- and you're one of the few people I actually care about."

After everything was set and the first shot appeared on the TV, she finally sat down on the couch and leaned back - both her worry and hot chocolate forgotten as her limbs were finally stretched and resting. That was when she really felt the missing doses of coffein; her whole body felt heavier than usual now that she was past the hard part of the day. Now that she could see the familiar actors and hear the familiar lines; now that she could feel Josef's thigh against her own, she finally started to give up.

It felt too nice and comfortable. She doubted that she can wait out the whole two hours and two minutes - she had seen the Interview with the Vampire so many times she knew everyhing about it by heart - without falling asleep.

But until then, she could talk, to keep Josef entertained. He had to be entertained unless she wanted to wake up to him scaring her and having a heart attack.

"Did you do anything interesting today?" she asked as she slowly sat up to reach her drink.

"Sure. I shot a short film for the collection."

"Well, at least you had a more exciting day then I had." she yawned. "Will you show me some of it? Someday..."

"Someday." maybe if she was more alert, she would've seen the change in his tone and gestures.

She put the mug back down. The movie continued. They stayed quiet.

Unusually quiet.

Josef is very rarely calm and silent. He either has to be in a bad mood or has to be very tired. And as she looked at him from the corner of her eyes she couldn't see any of it.

And then, later, the more tired she was, the more alert he became. His back straightened, but not from the excitement she came to know - from something else, something new; something she hasn't seen before.

Seemingly, he was thinking. She knew it from the way the muscles around his mouth moved. But she couldn't tell what was on his mind. It must've been something big and serious. She didn't dare to ask.

"You know..." her eyes were halfway closed when Josef spoke up. "I really thought you wouldn't care if we missed this movie night."

"Why wouldn't I?"

"You're tired."

"So?" she asked. "I'm always the tired one. You simply have more energy. Besides, it's just the addiction - coffee is a pretty strong drug." she chuckled quietly.

"I was thinking, maybe I'll keep you as my friend." if she noticed the dark tone of his voice, she didn't give it away at all.

"Well it's really nice of you to think so Josef, since we've been friends for the last two months." she turned towards him, her lips slightly curling upwards. "But I'll be happy if you keep me."

"I might."

And then soon, she was gone.

Her eyes closed, because she couldn't keep them open any longer and her whole being relaxed; her body didn't feel heavy anymore.

Perhaps she should have been worried. Scared - to fall asleep. But that's not how it went down, she gave up the fight with sleep and even if she lost, that's what saved her life.

The Interview with the Vampire kept on playing on the TV, the light from it made it possible to see in the room. Five minutes went by, then ten. And suddenly her head was resting on Josef's shoulder.

If she was awake, she would've noticed how stiff his posture has become or how he almost moved further away from her. But in the end he stayed and after he worked on his position on the couch, he decided to put aside the knife he had in his hand.

He slightly moved his head so his chin wouldn't touch the top of her head as he found the right angle to examine her from. He had seen her do a lot of stuff. He had seen her cook and clean, go to work and to the store or do whatever she liked to do in her free time - all without her knowledge. He hadn't seen her sleep yet.

She seemed calm, trusting. But then again every single person looks calm in his or her sleep. Trusting on the other hand - not many people would put their trust in him. Only the very naive or stupid ones. But he knew she wasn't stupid, nor naive. She had a decent job, a decent life and she didn't talk to everyone. Yet she talked to him.

He raised one of his hands and took hold of a lock of hair softly. He twisted it around his fingers and then awkwardly petted her head.

There was no fun in killing her in that moment. She was asleep. She hadn't seen the package yet. She hadn't seen the VHS tape he put in it. There wasn't enough fear in her yet.

But then again there was something else. There was trust and perhaps, just perhaps it may be more interesting than fear. It for sure felt nicer than her fear.

He brushed his fingers along the outline of her face as if he'd like to know every single bone or wrinkle. He stayed there and raked his fingers through her hair and smelled it too.

Later he put his knife away.

And after he put her in a more comfortable position on the couch, he went outside to get to the package before she does. He cut it open and after he retrieved the necklace he put in it, he set the rest of it aside. He'll get rid of it before she wakes up.

Maybe if she trusts him this much she'll like it.

If she likes him this much she'll definitely like it.

He sat down next to her on the couch again, his gaze was once on the movie and once on her.

That's what it took her to avoid death.

Her forgetfulness, her addiction and her trust. One simple mistake.

And after unknowingly escaping death, she's got an even clingier and stranger Josef than before.

But then again, it's still better, isn't it?

Utopia (2013-2014) created by dennis kelly. beauty is terror we quiver before it etc etc oh this show is so violent and beautiful and so deeply human I explode every time I think about it. you know cristobal tapia de veer from the white lotus soundtrack but that is Nothing compared to the work he did on this.

Bojack Horseman (2014-2020). as someone who loves movies this show is truly the best meta fiction out there about Hollywood that isn't afraid to throw punches. hilarious and brutal. the animation format and animal absurdity allows them to tell real unrestrained narratives that I don't think live action could ever achieve. The Bisexual (2018) despite the title I genuinely think desiree akhavan made the greatest lesbian story of all time with this. short, sweet, and soul crushing precarious fleabag type miniseries. also she's sooooo hot oh my GOD

Mr. Robot (2015-2019) it's a shame people forgot about this show towards the end and stopped watching because it is truly theeee speculative epic of all time speaking to issues of capitalism and identity and rebellion. between this and the lazarus project it's like a spiritual sequel to Utopia in the way it explores how much of yourself you have to sacrifice to escape from All This. probably got my favourite needle drops of all time.

I only know about that instance in which he asked about whether Jon and Dany would fight or fuck, but I wonder if he has ever talked more about them as a romantic option.

About the ice and fire thing that many people believe represents Jon and his aunt, that's a pretty cursory interpretation, not only because GRRM himself said the White Walkers are the ice and aunty and her pets are the fire, but he also said that the title's meaning has many layers, a primary, a secondary, a tertiary meaning, etc. At most, when someone asked about Jon and aunty being the characters most associated with those elements, GRRM said that that was a way to interpret it.

Also take note that GRRM still named the series A Song of Ice and Fire in the so called original outline, but Jon and his aunt was completely nonexistent in his plans. Doesn’t that kind of kill that whole ice and fire argument? Read more about it here:

And of course the Jon and aunt shippers will hold onto a secondary source, the GOT director Alan Taylor, that claims GRRM told him that Jon and his aunt are meant to be, are the point of the story, the ice and fire, etc, which contradicts GRRM's own words in the quotes above.

But just think about this very telling fact: The supposed words that GRRM told to Alan Taylor about Jon and aunty being "the ice and fire", "the point of the story", are not featured in So Spake Martin, the legit source for anything that the author has said about Asoiaf over the years. Alan Taylor gave multiples interviews during GOT's S7 about what GRRM told him about Jon and aunty during the filming of S1 in Malta, and he even repeated those words in some behind the scenes DVD stuff or something, and none of these is featured in the main source of GRRM's words about Asoiaf. And I wonder: Why??? Why none of Alan Taylor's "reports" is featured in So Spake Martin, like many others fan reports of their talking, correspondace, encounters, Q&A, etc, with GRRM about Asoiaf???

I’m new to this whole blogging thing if I’m gonna be frank. I mostly just hopped on here because I’m tired of the Reddit crowd and my usual brand of negativity doesn’t really jive well the in crowds of discord so now so I guess I’m just here now. So let me introduce myself I’m billet and about a year ago I started going to full sail for audio production.

Music has always been one of my passions and I spent my confused and edgy teen years trying to smash together metal licks with my shidiot teenage boy friends to pretty much no real success. Between being broke ass trailer park kids and lack of drummers and bass players. We really didn’t have the what we needed to really record anything really.

Anyway by the time I was 17 after many falling out with my current set of piers. I was depressed and alone as I wanted to be with no one for company besides this white boi rapper drug dealer. My now late mother used to rent out my room at the time to the local dealers for some extra side skrilla and he happened to be one of them.

We just kinda hit it off at the time and would smoke hella gas and watch dragon ball on vhs tapes. He just preferred them to digital formats. So one I were were chilling and I was on abit of a tirade about how I really missed making music how I couldn’t really do it anymore and yadda yadda yadda. When he stopped me and pointed out that the crappy computer my mother had just procured for me. Was fully capable of recording my vocals. He showed me how to boot up garage band and that day I recorded the worst cover of from first to last note to self you’ll ever hear.

From then on I world get random instrumentals I’d find on YouTube and just go to town. I have like a fraction of my old stuff from then on my old sound cloud with run of the mill 2014 edgy and offensive titles on a few which I regret now in hindsight.

After I lost my old laptop and my life fell to pieces during Irma i was 19 at the time. Once I got back on my feet I spent a few years moonlighting as an emo trap artist. As is the usual for metalcore scene washouts who couldn’t hack it within those circles.

Life got in the way again after about 2 years of rough whiny sad boi songs . Me and my partner moved states and we got our own space again but I still didn’t have a good computer or mic to record with. Because we were kinda hurting for cash I used to donate plasma at our local blood bank. Well one day I finished up my usual donation I had one of the other donors offer me a ride. I didn’t really think anything of it so I accepted and the bitch neglected to tell me her car didn’t have breaks until after we were on the road. One near death experience later I decided to go back to school for something I’ve always be interested in.

I’ve always been a fan of horror and I had recently finished a few analog horror series’s. Aswell as plethora of movies and games. A lot of which were very fresh in my mind and I still think about to this day. Being a shoegaze enjoyer and recently at the time having just discovered sigilkore. It’s basically if trap and hyper pop had an edgy bastard child. I figured why don’t I try to take some of the mixing styles I’ve heard in sigilkore and the density of some shoegaze projects I liked. Blend it together and shit fuck it into some horror inspired big cringe. There is this one artist called shedfromthebody she did this project where she was kinda larping as a weird fae creature thing in her music videos. So after I made my first song in years splinter. I figured well I’m a satanist why don’t I right songs in the Kayfabe of me being a demon who feeds on dreams and negative energy thus the reason why my first mixtape that I have embedded here. Is called dream eater. From there I would find free beats remix them and record my vocals over them.

Now I’m pretty done with my schooling. So I’ve trying to focus finishing up so I can work on my beat production skills. Well anyway if you read all of this thanks I always appreciate when anyone gives me the time of day. If I stick around I’ll prob keep posting

Bengiyo Queer Cinema Syllabus

For those who are not aware, I have decided to run the gauntlet of @bengiyo’s Queer Cinema Syllabus and have officially started Unit 3: Faith and Religion. The films in Unit 3 are: But I’m a Cheerleader (2000), Prayers for Bobby (2009), Latter Days (2003), Blackbird (2014), The Wise Kids (2011), Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party (2015)

Today I will be writing about

Prayers for Bobby (2009) dir. Russel Mulcahy

[Run Time: 1:30  , Available on: Hulu or Lifetime with memberships (i thought I saw Hulu in a list of companies to boycott because #zionist but it is the internet and I tried to research and could not find anything…either way I watched it like someone who sails the high seas) , Language: English]

Content Warning: suicide 

ADDITIONAL WARNING, THIS IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY 

Summary: True story of Mary Griffith, gay rights crusader, whose teenage son committed suicide due to her religious intolerance. Based on the book of the same title by Leroy Aarons.

Cast: * Sigourney Weaver as Mary Griffith, religious homophobe turned gay rights activist after the death of her son * Ryan Kelley as Bobby Griffith (this actor was the voice of Ben Tennyson in Ben 10!) * Scott Bailey as David, Bobby’s boyfriend * Dan Butler as The Rev. Whitsell, reverend for a Methodist Church Bobby starting attending because the church was safe for gays.

I have a feeling that this reflection may get more personal than usual. It was strange watching this movie and seeing Bobby’s experiences with his family and finding points of familiarity in my experience with my own, despite the fact that I did not grow up religious. 

And to be clear here, when I came out, I did not get sent to conversion therapy, I was not subjected to 90% of what Bobby went through in his household but, I recognize myself in him. Bobby’s sister calls him the family favorite, Bobby’s sister calls him perfect. Bobby knows the pressure and the isolation that comes from being seen that way and knowing you are anything but. It always feels strange to complain about being the known favorite, but the slight hint of bitterness from family that you love feels fucking terrible, especially because you have no say in how people see you. A fall from the pedestal is scary, the scrutiny you are under is intense. 

Bobby has The Knowing, I did not. I didn’t realize or at least admit that I was queer until I was 22, Bobby is still in high school, Bobby is hearing his grandmother say queers should be lined up and shot. I was hearing my uncle say the same. I was seeing my father literally recoil and cover his eyes the first time he saw gay sex on screen. I knew who his friends were, and what their beliefs are, and there was never room for me to ever entertain the question. 

Bobby’s family finds out, in ways Bobby has no control over. My mother forced a confession from me about my gender identity. Bobby’s father tells him he probably hasn’t met the right girl yet, when his father hears he’s gay. My mother told me I probably hadn’t found the right boy yet after she found out I was bi. 

Bobby’s family is desperate to save his soul from hell, they put him through so many things, when he moves to Portland, his mother hands him a new Bible. I knew someone who learned that I was queer, and came back with a copy of their holy book. 

At the beginning of the film, Bobby is established to have a good, strong, and loving bond with his mother. As a kid I did too. Bobby’s family tells him that they love him, they say it all the time, and then they learn he’s queer, and they still tell him that they love but they do not acknowledge or accept his identity, they do not listen to him when he tries to share his feelings, his parents never grow. My mom has not used the right pronouns for me once since she made me come out to her two years ago, despite several conversations with me, and with a friend of hers who has a nonbinary child. 

All of which to say I know what Bobby is feeling when his parents say they love him, but make no action to change it. I feel within my soul the resignation when his cousin tells him “you all seemed so close” and when he replies “well, that’s over with”.  Bobby’s mother told him she would not have a gay son, Bobby knew she meant it. My father told me once that he could live perfectly happily without me, and I knew he meant it.  I see echos in Bobby. 

But I was not raised religious, I do not believe in heaven or in hell, and as a result, I do not know what it is to be told, to grow up with The Knowing, hearing that no matter what, no matter who you are, or how much good you do, you are doomed to suffer for all eternity for something that you cannot change. I do not know what it is to have a fear of hellfire held over you for all your life. 

I do not know, and cannot understand what it must feel like to know that your mother believes so adamantly that she can ‘heal’ you, absolve you of this sin, and understand that all the harm she is doing to you, comes from a corrupted place of love. When Bobby dies, does he think his mother loves him?

“I know my mom means well, but I don’t know if she’ll ever accept me,” Bobby tells his boyfriend, and David replies “Just don’t stop trying”. I don’t know what David went through, I do not know what he relationship to his parents was like when he came out. But having to break yourself open time and time again, having to basically beg to be seen is fucking exhausting. I do not know if David knows that. 

I both love and hate these little hints that Bobby is approaching a suicide attempt, giving away his parachute pants to his brother, dissociating during work, reaching out to people who are supposed to be in his safety network, leaving his work keys on the table. The camera work itself, they switch from a steady cam to a shaky cam as he calls David. His world is unstable, he can’t find solid ground. I like that the movie warns you that this plot point is coming right at the beginning of the film, when we see Bobby stroll along the overpass. I think it is important that Bobby thinks of moments of joy mixed in with moments of sadness as he contemplates for just a little longer whether or not it is worth it to stop trying. And honestly, because I am petty and his mother was fucking cruel, I am kind glad that the last thing we see before he decides to fall is his mother telling him she will not have a gay son. No parent should ever had to suffer the loss of their child, Bobby should not have had to die for his mother to make these changes in her thinking, but for as much as the Reverend tells Mary she did not kill Bobby, the narrative does not absolve her of the role she played in hurting Bobby. 

Now, I famously had an extremely strong reaction to a moment in 180 Degrees Longitude Passes Through Us because it hit too close to home, so I was actually somewhat surprised that I was not having stronger emotional reactions to the first half of the film, watching Bobby be hurt. Maybe that’s because it was familiar, maybe it is because I knew to expect it, maybe it’s because I was shell shocked at hearing that Bobby’s therapy only cost $60 an hour). But hoo boy did I start having strong emotions after Bobby died. 

I was downright seething as I sat there, listening to this Reverand give a eulogy for Bobby, where he calls Bobby lost, says that he has strayed, says that he gave in to temptation.

AT THIS YOUNG MAN’S FUNERAL

And that anger just sat, it sat there in my chest as I heard Bobby’s mother ask Bobby’s grandma if she thought that Bobby was in heaven or in hell. Mary loves her son, Mary can not imagine a world where her son burns for all eternity, Mary needs to hear from someone that her son is at peace in heaven, where he is safe and where she can see him again. But no one will tell her that. Not her family, not her church. And it struck me too, that the way Bobby’s grandmother speaks about queer people, the way Bobby’s grandmother cannot find it within herself to say “Of course he is in heaven” is part of why I never came out to my grandmother. Now, I do not envision a world where my grandmother would have as intense a response to my queerness as Bobby’s grandmother did, but she was old southern, and my dad’s side of the family is fairly traditional. My grandmother passed away last month without me having shared my whole self with her. One of the last things she said to me before she died was that she was proud of me, I was never willing to risk losing that. I saw that fear in Bobby’s eyes when he heard his grandma say queers should be killed. I hated Bobby’s brother for not understanding how much Bobby was set to lose if he outed him. 

Initially I thought, because this movie was relatively short, that Mary would have a faster growth arc. I thought that what would make her question her faith, her belief that homosexuality is sinful, was the fact that David, a gay man, was the only person to praise her son, “he was an amazing young man”, without qualifiers. The reverend, his grandmother could not remember only the positive things about him, they had to focus on how much of a sinner he was. This dead boy. 

But I honestly much prefer that it takes Mary time to reckon with everything. That we think perhaps the needle is moving forward when she takes David’s hand, only to throw out the plate he touched and wash her hands the second he has left the house. I like that she goes to her church, and she does not find the answers she wants, I love that she goes to the church Bobby popped in to from time to time, the one that was accepting of gay people, and that she immediately picks a fight with the reverend while also needing him to calm her grief. 

You know what I love? Visible and intentional acts of empathy from someone who is very much having to put in some effort. One of my absolute favorite scenes in this entire film was the second conversation Mary has with Reverand Whitsell. He’s setting up for a rummage sale at the church, and this random, homophobic lady comes walking in to essentially debate him about his interpretation of the Bible compared to hers. And you can tell from his voice, from the stiffness of his movements, from the way he interacts with Mary that he is annoyed. I don’t think it is explicitly stated that Rev. Whitsell is queer, but he reads that way to me, because the way he handles Mary very much feels like a gay person having to explain for the 20th time why they deserve to have rights. But he is a holy man, he view’s God as compassion, and so despite the fact that he is clearly not wanting to have this conversation, he has it anyway. Because he knows that Mary is lost, and confused, and that she has no life line. And it would not be very Godly of him to turn her away. 

For/By/About 

This movie was made as a learning tool for homophobic Christians. It provides debate around the book of Leviticus a la West Wing. It feels very preachy, and I think that is because it is supposed to be.

So I would say this is a By and About piece at most, because this movie is adapted from the book, and Bobby makes the story. The director is queer as well.

Favorite Moment 

My favorite moment of the film is a tragic one, Mary is at work when the Griffith’s family gets the news that Bobby has passed. I like the build up to that scene for Mary, who is told by her coworker that her husband wants to speak with her, and that she should bring her purse. The audience at this point knows Bobby is dead, and so we know that the purpose of the visit is to break the news, and that she needs her purse because they are going to have to go recover the body. But Mary does not know this, and so, it is another average boring day at work, and one of her kids is probably here because they need money. There is no hint of anxiety or concern around this divergence from her typical work day. And she is literally in the process of pulling money out of her wallet when she sees her husband. 

My favorite moment in this movie is when Mary learns that Bobby is dead, and she cannot get out of work. Like, obviously, she is not going back to work, but physically she works behind metal gate with a mechanical locking mechanism that has to be unlocked by someone in a different location. And so she is trying to get out, she is screaming “help me, let me out, let me out, my son is dead, let me out” and all we see is Mary’s face desperate, her hands clutching at the door handle desperately trying to leave…

…and all you can see is that she’s caged. She is stuck, she is trapped. And this is a motif from Bobby’s voice overs. Bobby talks multiple times in this film about feeling alone, about wanting to be free. And here his mother is, alone, and wanting to be free. I think it is a really beautiful visual metaphor for this harmful belief Mary is stuck in, one that she needs to break out of. 

We end with Mary attending P-FLAG events, speaking at council meetings to argue for a pride day to be recognized by their town, and marching in the San Francisco Pride Parade, and it feels earned, because they didn’t rush her growth. She had to go to the Reverend so many times, she had to talk to so many people, she had to listen to so many people, before she was able to wholly change her views on homosexuality. 

Favorite Quote 

“She smiled at something I said, and I saw in her eyes that for a second she forgot what she really thinks of me. The anger never erupts. My timid nature would never allow a full fledged thunderstorm to occur. But it’s there, on the horizon…”

Like I said, there are experiences Bobby has that feel familiar to me, that ignite these little sparks of recognition, and there was no place in the film I saw myself reflected back as strongly as when I heard Bobby talk about his anger. 

Bobby holds anger, it sits around his edges, he holds his anger in. And that is me. I grew up in a household with a father who never capped his anger, he erupted all the time, he left shrapnel in his wake. I have my father’s anger, I hate that, over the years I have dedicated a large amount of energy towards tending to that horizon. 

I have never been more angry in my entire life, than the first time I came home after talking with my mother about my gender identity, and having her misgender me for weeks straight. I have never wanted to erupt more, to blow up more, to scream, cry, or die more than when she asked me to do things for her, for the household, for my grandparents, every single day, while refusing to acknowledge my identity (and not expecting any labor from my brother, but that’s beside the point here).

I am not suicidal, I have never been suicidal, but the way the anger that festered when so much work, hours of manual and emotional labor were asked of me in my disabled, burnt out body, while my family could not be fucked to fix a pronoun, fucking scared me. 

I will never know how Bobby truly felt, I will never know how much Bobby truly suffered, but I can guess, I know what emotions I carried in my body when I was being told some of the same things Bobby was, I know the toll it took on my mental health to hear my mother, two years after I told her I was bi, say that she doubted that was the case, because I just hadn’t found the right man yet. And it fucking sucked.

And I love being queer, there was a part of me that felt hollow for so long that was filled when I realized who I was. Bobby had to deal with figuring out self-acceptance and self-love from a very different starting point than me. Bobby did not want to be gay, Bobby was willing to try to be “healed”, so I cannot imagine how deep his anger, loneliness, and hopeless ran. 

Score

10/10 for how much it made me reflect on my own experiences with family and queerness. Bobby seemed like a wonderful person, and it is nothing but a tragedy that he is not with us today, just like all the other people we have lost far too soon.
