Review: Fa yeung nin wa/In the Mood for Love (2000)
“Fa yeung nin wa” is written and directed by Wong Kar-Wai (who also did “Chungking Express”), starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, who give a great performance. The prequel of “In the Mood for Love” is “Days of Being Wild”, and the sequel is “2046“, all directed by Wong.

Besides having beautiful cinematography, Wong’s movies are complicated and sometimes a little hard to follow, since he likes to use symbolism and metaphors, instead of directly showing what is going on. Sometimes he’s so vague, it makes you feel lost (is she thinking that, or did that really happen? what does that look mean? who is talking to who?). The storyline is almost non-existent, yet the film requires all your attention, although there is only little dialog.

Set in Hong Kong, 1960′s, Mr. Chow Mo-Wan moves into a new building with his wife, coincidentally at the same time Mrs. Chan and her husband move in. Important to note, in the 60′s many apartments in Hong Kong (and other parts of the world) were shared, so all the neighbors were like a community and used the same kitchen, living room and bathrooms.
There’s only little privacy, everyone knows everything that is going on in that building, the camera captures that narrowness very well. What also immediately stands out in the first scenes, is that Chow’s wife and Chan’s husband’s faces are never shown.
Tumblr media
Since their spouses are often away, Chow and Chan spend most of their time alone after work. But soon, they realize that their partners are having an affair with each other, and probably live together overseas. Hurt and angry, they find comfort in their growing friendship (although they are both very secretive about it, since they want to avoid gossip). They ask themselves, how did the relationship with those two start/develop? After spending months together, even if they can’t admit it at first, they fall in love with each other as well (“feelings can creep up just like that”). Chan doesn’t want to leave her husband, and Chow moves away eventually.
Tumblr media
It’s a rather bittersweet love story, that never truly becomes one, since guilt, fear and morals don’t let it happen. I thought that Tony and (super stylish) Maggie did a great job, capturing the sadness, desperation and longing their characters felt when they were alone, and the happiness and uncomfortableness they felt when together. Simply for their acting, and the unique directing, this classic Hong Kong movie is worth watching.
