The B.C. Prosecution Service says it has withdrawn contempt charges against 11 old-growth logging protesters accused of breaching a court injunction during blockades at Fairy Creek on Vancouver Island.
Spokesperson Gordon Comer says prosecutors were in court Tuesday to enter the withdrawals, and the service is reviewing other cases in the wake of a ruling that acquitted protester Ryan Henderson earlier this year.
Comer says the Crown is reviewing the remaining cases that were impacted by the Henderson decision in February, which tossed out the charge of criminal contempt because of the RCMP's failure to properly read the injunction to people arrested during the protest.

We really dislike travel days and our Monday started at 5am to catch our Quantas flight to Perth. But in comparison to our 20 hour travel day, our four hour flight was much less painful than expected (except for those unusual breakfast cakes of quinoa and kale). And we managed to score an early room checkin by noon, after booking our Margaret River tour for Thursday at the Western Australia Tourist centre. Wondering why there’s a separate state and city tourism centre within a block of each other.
Also wondering what those pockmarks of varying sizes, colours and shapes on the ground were as we flew over Southern Australia - abandoned mines? Dried up lakes? I’m hoping they’re some kind of naturally occurring dips in the land rather than results of human destruction.
Oh yeah speaking of destruction, I watched another really interesting film on the Franklin River in Western Tasmania and a multi year organized blockade to stop its damming, shown through the eyes of a child of one of the protesters who died too early from cancer. They travelled the same 14 day river route to share their father’s experience and the beauty preserved by the collective efforts. So spoiler alert - the dam was successfully stopped by the courts. But its beauty sure made me want to go there although seems very remote. The film is called Franklin; really worth watching. Wondering whether I should have participated in the blockade to stop old growth foresting at Fairy Creek and make sure I float down the Cowichan River this year.
We’re chasing sun on this trip and we definitely found it. 37 degrees yesterday and so pleasant to eat dinner and walk outside at 7:30 in the evening after the sun sets. Below was the irresistible delicate cloud formation from our window. Facing the other direction, the city skyline is full of office towers.
Tumblr media
Today is only a high of 35. We recall Craig was doing his “thesis” on the impacts of sun versus shade the last time we visited. 😆 Off to find some shade and the occasional sun.

“The confrontation between logging company Teal-Jones and forest defenders in court is the result of the ongoing failure of the provincial government to follow through on their promise and deliver solutions to protect globally rare and endangered old-growth forest like the spectacularly intact Fairy Creek rainforest in Pacheedaht territory,” said Sierra Club BC campaigner Jens Wieting in a statement Thursday.
The Fairy Creek rainforest is the last intact watershed in the San Juan river system, representing an ancient and irreplaceable ecosystem, and if Teal-Jones is successful in logging it, trees hundreds to thousands of years old will be turned to sawdust...

[ Similar destruction in the nearby Caycuse watershed, where old-growth trees have been logged by Teal-Jones, photographed by TJ Watts. ]
Although this injunction has been granted, the defenders of Fairy Creek are not backing down, and are asking you to join the fight however you can.
Getting boots on the ground is of the utmost importance right now, and Fairy Creek Blockade are asking anyone who can to join them on the front lines, but for those who can’t physically join the blockade, donating is incredibly important and helpful as well.
You can also help by writing to + phoning decision makers and voicing your horror and disgust at the situation, some key individuals are:
B.C. Premier John Horgan: (250) - 387 - 1715 / [email protected]
Minister of Forests Katrine Conroy: (250) - 387 - 6240 / [email protected]
Minister of Enviro. George Heyman: (250) - 387 - 1187 / [email protected]
And Teal-Jones themselves, which can be reached at: (604) - 587 - 8700
Please take action for B.C.’s last old-growth forests, because we won’t have another chance to save them.

Witches of America
If you haven't heard yet, the old-growth forests of British Columbia in Canada are at risk. If you haven't seen anything about Fairy Creek, please look it up after you read this.
Tumblr media
When Donald Trump was running for President we heard your cries and came to your aid in the fight against him. Now our home and some of the last of our old-growth is at risk. We ask that in our time of need that you return the favour and come to our aid. Our old-growth is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Fairy Creek is one of the largest remaining old-growth forests on Vancouver Island which contains trees that are 500 years older than Notre Dame Cathedral.

I am begging for your help! This landscape means more to me than anything. It's my home, it's the home of my spirits, it's the home of the Indigenous people. Our government promised to protect it, but by the time they protect it, they will be too late. Even just a moment to ask your spirits to help. I'm asking for anything you're able to give.

Over the summer I got arrested by the RCMP in Canada, it’s been nearly six months and I still have chronic pain in my ribs and back.
I’m pretty sure this is due to the officer standing over top of me with his steel toe boots for 5 hours without giving me a break, even after repeatedly crying out in pain for him to stop. I seem to have been in denial about this being the root cause of my pain, but after months of constant anxiety and stress that’s been impacting me after this (one of MANY, may I add) incidence(s), I’ve realized that enough is more than enough.
I’ll update if I get checked out by a doctor or if anything else comes of this.

Prosecutors in B.C. have withdrawn cases against nearly 150 protesters who were arrested for participating in a blockade around old-growth logging on Vancouver Island after a judge this year found Mounties did not read the full text of a court order to the group.
A statement from the B.C. Prosecution Service on Thursday confirmed cases against 146 protesters have been dropped because their ability to succeed was "placed in doubt" by a ruling that acquitted protester Ryan Henderson in February.
"Those cases are now concluded as a result of this ruling," read an email to CBC News.
The confirmation comes hours after the Supreme Court of Canada said it would not hear the Crown's appeal of the Henderson decision, marking the end of the legal road for prosecutors trying to keep the cases against protesters alive. [...]

@colinsmithtakespics When the old growth is under attack, what do we do?" "STAND UP FIGHT BACK!" People say "the system is broken" but we are constantly reminded over and over again that it isn't in fact "broken" It's designed to work this way. It was designed by colonizers to inflict genocide on Indigenous people's who inhabited the lands since time immemorial. It isn't in "the past" It's still happening today.

The injunction at Fairy Creek being reinstated is proof enough that our government doesn't actually care about indigenous reconciliation.

Threats and fear as loggers clash with blockaders at Fairy Creek | Ricochet
The teams drop in by helicopter in the early morning hours, carrying out arrests that the government has acknowledged in court filings are intended to take place in secret, without media present. A coalition led by the Canadian Association of Journalists that includes Ricochet has filed a legal application contesting RCMP restrictions on media access. That application will be heard in court on July 12.
Although blockaders have remained peaceful through months of civil disobedience, they describe increasing concern over reports of the RCMP using dangerous extraction methods and targeting Indigenous people. In videos that have emerged of violent arrests, the victim is most often Indigenous, despite a majority of blockaders being settlers.

Here is the link for a g*fundme for the Fairy Creek Blockade happening right now and it is set up to support Indigenous Land Defenders. Apparently the RCMP have gone through the Land Back camp which was the last camp standing against Teal Jones.
I've been getting information from Indigenous Land Defenders on instagram such as @siiamhamilton @nikkilaes and the @wetsuweten_checkpoint if you want to follow anyone for more information.
