APRIL 2020 FAKEATHON 

This year has certainly taken a strange turn, hasn’t it? With so many of us stuck at home and looking for ways to pass the time, it seems like the perfect opportunity to design fake Pokémon and share them with the world!

Q. What is the Fakeathon?

The Fakeathon is an art challenge that runs for a month, similar to inktober. The goal is to create one fake Pokémon per day following a list of daily prompts. Anyone can participate, and you are free to use any method of art, from digital to traditional to pixel art or any other style you choose!

Share your art with the world using the hashtag #Fakeathon2020 on social media, starting on April 1 when this challenge begins!

Theme: Around The World

We may be stuck at home, but we can still imagine what it would be like to travel the world. For this Fakeathon, every day is a different country. Your challenge is to create a fakemon inspired by that country in some way, whether it be its landmarks, wildlife, culture, or mythology. Our hope is that this will be a way to discover world cultures! (Please be careful and considerate of other cultures and try not to create designs that are offensive!)

Day 1, your hometown/city/country

Bellossom [Florida Region] Form- Grass Type. Bellossom from [Florida Region] give off a very strong citrusy aroma. Their blossums secrete a sweet nectar that is harvested and sold all over the world and is often enjoyed with breakfast.

My hometown is utterly unremarkable so i decided to go with something that represented Florida as a whole instead, but the only thing I could think of was orange blossoms which is kinda the most obvious thing to do lol. So here is Bellossom [Florida Region] form!

Fakeathon challenge day 1: hometown / country

here’s my entry for day 1 that i forgot to post earlier! a couple things i wanted to include in this were the ghost type, just because i often call this place a ghost town (for example, the whole mass quarantine going on isn’t effecting how the outside here looks at all. just as quiet as ever), and also pretty much the two only things that make this place stand out at all, our museums and a paper factory. So the idea behind these pokemon would be that they’re made out of scrapped or thrown away paper from artists and they’ve decorated themselves with discarded art-supplies. they haunt art museums and feel jealous of the finished art pieces that were put up for everyone to look at.

i dunno if i’ll be participating for the rest of the challenge, but this was a lot of fun to design ^^

Day 2 is America! I based this one off of the Liberty Bell!

#??? Liberring (Liberty + Ring) Fairy/Steel type Ability: Bell Ringer* Dex entry: Liberring only appear when true freedom is attained. It’s said that the bell they carry, when it rings, creates a sounds so intimidating that all fighting will be brought to an end. Liberring does not evolve.

*Bell Ringer: gives all sound based moves a chance to confuse, at the cost of slightly lower attack.

I imagine they are both legendaries, lol. Tried to emulate the Sugimori style, not quite there yet I think.

Garblgoyle, the Grotesque Pokémon | Rock/Water

"It absorbs rainwater through its stony skin, filtering it for nutrients. If it doesn't rain for a while, its body dries out and solidifies until it is indistinguishable from a stone statue." Based on gargoyles / grotesques, in this case specifically the ones on the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France.

FAKEATHON DAY 12: ETHIOPIA CAFFIEND - Derived from caffeine, fiend

Obviously hyenas live in Ethiopa. But moreover, Ethiopia is also known as pretty much the birthplace of coffee, and coffee drinking/making is important to the culture. So I thought, why not make a hyena that's super happy cause it's always super hyped up on caffeine? Dunno if the electric typing makes much sense, I just thought caffeine = energy = electricity

Baagis (Normal/Flying)

Prompt: Home City/Country (Scotland) | Haggis

Baagis live on high mountain peaks wandering above the clouds. They have thick wooly coats for camouflage which blends into the fog, making them elusive and rarely documented. They are so rare, there is a firm belief that one set of legs is shorter than the other to help them travel around their steep homes.

Hooo boy I have an entire region worth of ideas of Scottish pokemon, but I wanted to go with one people might actually recognise. Haggis is a dish in Scotland made up of sheep- all the nasty tasty leftover bits cooked in a sheep’s stomach! There’s a bit of a joke that haggis are real creatures, usually living in the Highlands, walking clockwise or anti-clockwise around mountains. They even have one set of legs that are shorter than the other to balance them out! X’D

Baagis did have a pre-evo but I wasn’t too happy at how it looked. Instead, I cobbled together my favourite parts of the design- a rounded body like a haggis, longer stockings on one set of legs, and a thick wooly coat to help them hide in cloud-covered mountains. They are surprisingly fun to draw, little bean bodied sheeps.

Fakeathon 2020: Around the World

Day 2: United States

Wanted to do a cute little mothman Pokemon! Maybe not as fearsome as its inspiration, but I threw in some luna moth too.

Reflarva (Reflect + Larva) 

The Mimicry Pokemon

Bug 

Reflarva is very shy, hiding in the underbrush of dark forests to avoid contact with others. It has two large reflective eyespots which it uses to deter possible predators. 

Lunago (Luna moth + Imago) 

The Elusive Pokemon

Bug

Only coming out at night, Lunago is a seldom seen Pokemon. It flies across the sky with glowing eyes, seeking for light sources and people to be around. While not unfriendly by any means, it can be creepy, staring at trainers without making a noise.

Day 15- Russia, based on the Baba Yaga and the Lammergeier Cerrado Dex ??? Barbayaga (Gypaetus barbatus, the Bearded Vulture/Lammergeier + Baba Yaga) The Bone Eater Pokemon Dark/Flying Gluttony/Tangling Hair/Tangled Feet Often being vilified in folklore due to their particular taste in bones, Barbayaga can be wise guides to their forested homes if you approach them properly. Considering there’s already something of an ‘America’ pokemon in the form of Braviary I wanted to come at it from a bit of a different angle and take inspiration from early puritan settlements and the history of witches.

I also wanted this one to have pre-evos but in the interest of saving time the final stage will have to be enough. Maybe I can make that happen once the challenge is over.
