Coming from my background with video games like Skyrim, the Sims 4 community sometimes seems just plain weird.
Like I just … I think the first time I really interacted with an online gaming community was probably Skyrim, because of modding. (For reference, Skyrim came out in 2011, Sims 4 came out in 2014.) Skyrim – and most Elder Scrolls/Fallout games in general – were kind of acknowledged as being a buggy mess by the community. The single most downloaded mod for Skyrim or it's predecessor, Oblivion, was the unofficial patch. Even though there were some updates to the game, it was generally acknowledged that most of the bugs would go unfixed, and it was up to the modding community to fix them. When DLC was released, no one expected much in terms of inter-pack play, and there weren't many (any?) updates to the base game to add content from the DLCs. Vanilla gameplay for Skyrim in 2011 is very, very similar to vanilla gameplay for Skyrim in 2022.
And let me point out, real quick, that Skyrim got a graphics overhaul and was re-released in 2016, and Skyrim VR came out in 2017, and in 2021 they released the Anniversary Edition, which included creation club features (essentially monetized mods greenlit by Bethesda) but otherwise went unchanged.
Now, Sims 4 came out in 2014, three years after Skyrim, and was … not great at launch. But since then, base game updates have gotten it to pretty much where it should have been at launch, with pools, toddlers, half walls, an additional world, landscaping, story progression, etc. They've also improved base game gender settings, added sexual orientation, and pronouns. They've improved their skintones and afro-textured hair. They've added new swatches to base game items. They've added new traits, lot traits, freelance careers, nail polish, new CAS and build/buy items, CAS story mode, challenges, and more.
And that's not counting any DLCs.
And yeah, a lot of these things haven't been perfect. But Skyrim literally had dragons flying backwards and mammoths falling from the sky. Bethesda does not have anything equivalent to SimGurus, who are willing to be the face of the company to the community. They don't have anything like Answer HQ, where bugs can be reported, to the best of my knowledge. The don't have anything like the Creator Network, where community members can review DLC before its release.
So it's just … so weird to me that people have so many issues with Sims 4, and act like the SimGurus are to blame for stuff that's obviously EA's fault (packs being rushed, not doing proper QA testing, pricing, splitting content up the way they have, etc). The Sims 4 isn't perfect, but I have a lot more faith in Maxis than I do for Bethesda, because Maxis has shown that they are willing to listen to the community. They are willing to improve the base game for free. They continue to work on fixing bugs and adding content.
Compared to Skyrim, that's amazing, and I don't think people really acknowledge that.
There is merit in criticism. Criticism is where a lot of these improvements came from – the community criticized, the developers listened, and the game was improved. I do not have an issue with criticism. I do, however, have issues with nihilism. I define nihilism, in this case, as when people imply that new base game features won't be expanded on (and say that ambiguous tweets such as SimGuru George's about adding cross-pack play is a definite "no" when it's actually a wishy-washy ambiguous not-promising-or-denying statement at best/worst), say that "the sims 4 could never [insert gameplay feature here]", imply newly introduced bugs won't ever be fixed, etc., etc. Nihilism (in my understanding, at least) is the philosophy that nothing will change so it's pointless to try, and if the Sims 4 devs are anything, they're adaptable and open to change.
Yes, the new Wants and Fears system is bare-bones and buggy. This won't last forever. The bare-bones state of it was due to it being a major gameplay feature overhaul, replacing whims with wants. They basically had to rip out the old system and replace it in time for the new pack to come out. Does it have as many features as whims had yet? No. But in my brief time playing the new update (I've been swamped with school stuff), I can see why they swapped to the new system. The wants seem to be more individualized for the sim, rather than the generic "buy a bee-box", "buy a pool", "become [emotion]". Now that the system is in place, it will be easier for them to add more. They have a huge list of whims they need to go through and decide whether it's a good whim which should be converted to the wants system, or something silly like buying a 1x1 pool. They didn't have time to do that before a pack was released that used the new system, so they had to release the system in it's current bare-bones state. That does not mean it will be that way forever.
Granted, it's possible that I'm wrong, and it will stay that way – but I don't think that's the case. It's only been, what, two days since the update? I'm going to wait and see what they do with the new system. It's a better (and imo healthier) attitude than thinking the way it is is the way it will always be, and an attitude that I believe Maxis has earned the right to.

My Top Games of All Time List
This is my Top Games Experiences of All Time List. The rating of this is based on memories. I know some of these were in different orders on my lists for the previous years, but this list is based on how I feel about them today, which may change again in the future.
I've put a "thought" next to each. Some of these you can click on. Some of these you could play someday. I'd recommend trying any!
The Tops
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
My best game experience. I live in Michigan, so the waters of the Greek Isles? Like nothing I've experienced, but this game helps me imagine it. Then, place a great game in this world? Like, So Much game too? Great. Just great.
Saints Row the Third
My original experience with is what I chase in every video game I played. It was just… fun. Stupid, but exciting fun. It's wacky in story and style, you collect stuff, and you the skill tree is addicting. All about this.
Read Dead Redemption
This game impressed the heck out of me on first playthrough. It was so epic. The different biomes and acts to the game and different cities. It was not only sprawling in space, but in story and scope.
Control
To me, this game was all about the details. In the effects, in the environment, in the lore. Also, gameplay was slick and mood was awesome.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Nothing like this story. It felt like a prestige TV series, but not a boring something to watch but an exciting thing to play.
Batman: Arkham Knight
This is my pick to represent the entire series. This is not everyone's favorite, but it really grabbed me some reason. I love the city, the shooting, the "refresh" of the action gameplay, and it was one of the first Photo Modes I played with - which blew my mind.
Far Cry 6
Not only best of the series, but best FPS-Open-World period.
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Thick with style, short, impactful.
Bioshock
Great graphics, style, and in-game storytelling.
Fallout 3
My intro to open world games. Massive game.
Duke Nukem 3D
My intro to what FPSs could do.
Doom II
My intro to FPSs.
Sonic 2
Perhaps the first full game I beat. I was really proud. Replaying enough to get this one "programed" this soundtrack into my head…
Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube)
Playing back in the day at a friends was just simply a good time.
Resident Evil Village VR
Wacky, weird, and great in VR.
Tomb Raider (1)
Formative.
Sam & Max Hit The Road
Formative.
Tom Clancy's The Division
One of the best open-world (modern-city) games in my opinion. This one in a quarantined New York City. No cars, so all walking on foot. The cover based shooting felt really "professional." Super slick.
Dead Rising 2: Off The Record
The benefits of the sequel tech, but also an unprecedently "redo" with a redirection to wild fun. Super great.
Watch Dogs 2
The best open-world (modern-city) games in my opinion. A solid story with great style and so much to see. Lots of great touches and unique things to the series. Far better than the original. Just try it!
The Evil Within 2
This was the only game that made me feel kind of sick in my throat from some of the horror elements. So, definitely impactful to me.
Dragon Quest Builders 2
I thought this series was great. Some parts felt too long, but that's what also gave it the feel of accomplishment after you spent so much time in a world and completed it. The best "building" game in my mind.
Ultimate Spider-man
The first of the Spider-man games that really clicked for me. This was a great experience for me at the time. I played several times. I loved the style.
Resident Evil 2 (remake)
The best remake of anything I played. Genius.
Super
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Best in this series so far. Flawed, yes, but the experience at the time was unparalleled.
Prey
It takes a lot from other games, but it does it well!
Akiba's Trip
I like the cut of this games' gib.
Marvel's Midnight Suns
By far the best of the "series" of isometric Marvel strategy games.
Star Trek: Resurgence
Best Star Trek game, and one of the best sci-fi Adventure Games I've played.
Bully: Scholarship Edition
I loved the world and how it opened up, the seasons, the stories, the "classes minigames," etc. It didn't have the "highs" of some other games, but there really weren't any "lows" in this game in my memory!
TRON 2.0
Better than the movies to me. It just made a lot of sense, and also played darn well.
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts
The best vehicle builder game in my opinion.
Metal Gear Solid V
Other than Death Stranding, this is the only Kojima game I've played all the way through. And I’m putting this one on the list instead just because it got me just as much or more weirdness, but faster.
Tomb Raider (reboot)
This really shocked me in how "cool" a reboot could be. Many things from this game I won't forget. Best in this series in my mind.
Astro's Playroom
Slick as heck.
Luigi's Mansion 3
The only one of the series I've played, but I'm guessing the best. This is just really great.
Freedom Fighters
I've been playing recently even.
GTA San Andreas
The best one in my mind. There was nothing like the Act change where you had to go into exile. It made you do new gameplay, explore new areas, all these things in the same game.
The Crew
Some people rip on this game as not being exactly a street to street rebuild of the United States, but that would be terrible. THIS is the best version of a real coast-to-coast driving game thus far. Technically, The Crew 2 has better graphics, but that's not even a game. THIS is a game. It's not just a tech demo like the sequel.
Super Mario Odyssey
Perfect game.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
See our podcast episode about this: link
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2
The best LEGO game in my mind. Fully of characters and places and styles and jokes and it's completely beatable.
Zombie Army 4: Dead War
This series is wild. This is the most advanced in this series thus far.
Hitman: Absolution
The best in the series in my mind. This was the last before a reboot.
Katamari
Of course.
No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way
Back in the day, this was packed full of gameplay and style.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Back in the day, this was slick.
Ratchet & Clank - A Rift Apart
The best of this series. Looks like a Pixar movie and plays great too.
Rocksmith
I learned some bass using this.
Blood and Truth
The first VR game I played that was a "real game." Not to mention, unique in being a fast paced shooter.
Sniper Elite 5
I liked this entire series, so this is the most advanced version thus far.
South Park: The Fractured but Whole
This game literally surprised me in how actually funny it was. Best South Park thing, better than the show.
Sunset Overdrive
Some people rip on this one online, but I love the weird and wacky style, and the gameplay is fast and unique.
Sacred 3
A game I played long after its release, but it was just a fun and fast paced game.
The Godfather: The Game
A strange game I played on PC. Some pretty unique ideas, lol
Uncharted 2
One of the best in the series in my mind.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
It was the best game I played that summer, when I was really lonely at my internship in Ohio.
Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance
The best of the series in my mind. I really liked how slow the story started, from your family owned business to being part of the Rebels.
Resident Evil Revelations 2
This game was a weird one, but when I played the collection of the episodes - it was a like playing a "hidden" game no one knew about. Oddly, one of my top RE games.
Guacamelee 2
One of the few "hard" games I've played all the way through. But, it was all doable!
Void Bastards
A viable rougelike. And now that I think back, a Boomer Shooter too?
Dead or Alive 4
What can I say? Good gameplay, wacky style, and the FPS on Dreamcast was wild.
Great
Ghostwire: Tokyo
Great style. Nothing like it in an FPS.
HUNTDOWN
Unique retro style game with slick, die and repeat gameplay.
The Medium
One of the few "real horror" games I've played. But it got me really engaged and I enjoyed from start to finish.
Prototype 2
Best of this series. This game is extremely playable.
Dance Central 2
I first played this series at a friend's, then I bought the whole setup. I don't know where my Kinect got to…
Shovel Knight
This one really surprised me. I hadn't played a lot of "hard" games like this one, but it played SO well.
Fallout 2
I played a lot.
Bulletstorm
'tude
FEAR 2
A good one in the series. Story is all out of whack, but allows for a great game "world."
Titan Quest
I never did the Diablo thing, but this one grabbed me for some reason. I played through several times.
Alien: Isolation
Superb style and pacing.
Alien Shooter: Vengeance
I played back on PC in the old days. I really never played anything like it before, or since.
Crackdown 3
I liked the series, and this one is the most polished.
da blob 2
I don't think about often, but I remember fondly.
Dishonored 2
The best of the series for me. Like the original, but amped up.
Star Wars: Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
The best star Wars game I played for a long time. A great mix of the FPS, the lightsaber, characters, and even FMV stuff!
Star Wars: Tie Fighter
I still remember flying with Vader, and really hoping he would approve of me.
Trover Saves the Universe
A groundbreaking VR game, but also game. It was subversive to what a game "should be" like. This game usually goes left when it's supposed to go right.
The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition
One of the few puzzle games I completed. The style and world was trippy/cool.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
The best of the series in my memory.
Dying Light
Not a lot from this games sister series grabbed me really, but this one did. I felt like it just all came together "right."
Freedom Force
One of the first games with a deep style I played. Then I found out who John Kirby was later.
Hitman (1)
I had some good memories with this one.
The Witcher 3
Iconic.
Sackboy Adventures
The only Playstation platformer that rivals Nintendo ones.
Assassin's Creed Syndicate
I loved the style on this one. I think I near 100%'d it.
Mirror's Edge Catalyst
I liked the original, and this one made it playable. No other gameplay like it that I know of.
Portal 2
The original is slick, but this one is a full game.
Red Faction: Armageddon
In this game, you really can destroy everything in it. Even walkways you need to continue on. Thus, they have a "nanotech" tool to rebuild stuff. It's the only way a game can really let you destroy everything in the space.
Remember Me
A unique sci-fi game with super cool ideas. Great style too.
Life is Strange
I never got much into sequels or other "emo" games, but this one hit me at the right time. Love the soundtrack.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas: 2
I played this one way back. Best of the series in my memory.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
The best of the series for me. It uses the top tech, and it's short.
Titanfall 2
Best pilot/mech gameplay I've had.
Outlast II
Some scary memories from this one. Very dark, as in almost no light in some scenes. It's an experience.
Steam World Dig 2
All these Steam World games are quality, but this one grabbed me and was easy and short enough to finish.
Detroit: Become Human
This game seems to be made fun of by a lot of people online, but I started, was engaged, and finished. The best David Cage game I've played.
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
The only fighter jet game I've ever started and finished. So, in my mind, the best one.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood
Gameplay wise, my favorite of the new series.
Cat Quest
A unique hack and slash game where you mostly play on the "map" screen. Good sense of humor and fun.
Journey to the Savage Planet
FPS Roguelike with a great sense of humor.
Honorable Mentions
Mass Effect 2
Best in the series.
The Saboteur
One of the first games I felt like I wanted to "get everything on the map."
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The entire series was interesting, but this was the best playing for me.
Dead Space 2
The better of the two
Monkey Island 3: The Curse of Monkey Island
Encapsulates a certain sense of humor. Made me wish for warm climates.
Majin and the Forbidden Kingdom
Interesting puzzle game.
FF9
The first half was solid.
50 Cent: Blood on the Sand
Actually… a good Cover-Based-Shooter for the time.
Alice: The Madness Returns
Took the idea of the original, but made it look and play good!
Shadow Complex
A PS Now discovery. Quite fun.
Slayers X
A perfect homage.
Amped 3
I remember using my digital camera to take some videos of my screen of replays of my best runs.
SSX (reboot)
Introduced me to some great music.
Bayonetta
You can't deny the style, but I never got into the gameplay.
Beyond Good & Evil
Could have been greater, if they were only a bit more focused.
Binary Domain
Uniquely experimental. I enjoyed playing with friends.
Nights of Azure
Unapologetically alternative
Black & White
Interesting attempt, if nothing else.
James Bond 007: Blood Stone
I didn't like this series of the movies, but I liked this.
Captain America: Super Soldier
At the time, this was alright.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Not many of these grabbed me, but this one did perfectly.
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Had a lot of fun sci fi ideas. A good looking game for it's time.
Conan
Okay. It looked good. It had topless women in it on PS3.
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Dark game with mix of investigation and grimy violence.
Dark Void
The best "jet pack" game I've played. Activating it indoors had a 90% chance to kill you, just like you'd expect!
Dante's Inferno
The goth, metal, emo, dark, in your face style was unique and not really done to this extent again. It went all in on style, with only tolerable gameplay.
The Darkness II
I was considering putting the first one on here because of its innovations, but this one was better to play.
Deadpool
One of the most humor based games I've played. And gameplay is o.k.
Fable
Great sense of humor and style. Better than all the sequels in my mind.
Far Cry 2
I just remember having to keep getting these very hard to find malaria pills to stay alive. Not many games have your character just die if they can't find an actually tough to find item.
Folklore
Felt like an indie comic somehow. Odd style.
Freelancer
Early "open world" stuff.
Tearaway: Unfolded
Full of gimmicks and weirdness. Hard to forget some of the strange things they tried.
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes
Simple and unique gameplay. Would make a good, modern mobile app.
Lollipop Chainsaw
Trash. But, like, as in "Trash Cinema." As in, good.
Lost Planet 3
I'll never forget the feeling of being a lone contractor on this hostile ice planet. It was one of the first games with a "vibe" I remember
Metro Exodus
I always wanted to like this series, and the is the one that allowed me
Murdered Soul Suspect
Never seen an adventure game with this kind of plot before, or since
Oni
Very unique, experimental gameplay. No one did this control scheme again, but it was a unique idea for the time.
Overlord
Great sense of humor and unique (gameplay)
Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain
I remember trying to wrap my head around the plot/mechanics of this. Both might have been beyond me at the time
Splatterhouse (PS3)
Tough to play now, but parts were striking upon release
Gal*Gun 2
Nothing like it (except for Gal Gun 1)
School Girl Zombie Hunter
Very unique
Thank you for reading. I love you.

In previous projects I used blender, photoshop, unreal engine. i made three projects: a fps survival game, a 2D platformer and an arcade. I learnt alot about ai and the use of tracks for objects to follow when in motion The idea/ reason behind my project was the tale of the Russian sleep ex, which was a horror tale about Russians using gas that keeps you awake. I'm playing to make a VR game that hints on the physiological side of the mind with elements that make you keep digging into the game. I want to make a VR game as it's different and challenging as you have to make sure where the player can be, will be and have things working properly. The programs im using will be unreal 5.1 and blender, i'm using blender as i want to get better at modelling and using the armature tools,
my concept is a bunker underground and your trapped. The genre is a mix between horror and escape my plan is to have min 5 rooms and 1 floor but if i can i want to add 3 floors and up to 6 rooms each floor, my build of the map is a underground bunker and your goal is to escape but as you do there's events that can happen causing things to move or you to lose your only source of light if you not careful.  There really isn't a set story but the player will experience an emergent narrative, all I have is you wake in a room and you must escape. This is less of a game than it being more of an interactive experience. With having not to worry about game balancing and gameplay mechanics this means I can work more on map design. In the beginning this was going to be survival from a monster in the dark and I have researched experiments about horrors and stuff but now I've moved to doing a horror escape. Alongside blender and unreal I'll be testing and working out bugs using my oculus.
My target is to evaluate my game in vr, i'm going to be testing with my peers, specifically
To test if the assets and worlds work in vr as vr needs more detail to a normal game,my main targets are to see if my peers can play without getting sick can move around smoothly for the 3d models i'm basing them of real life items so i can compare on how well i have replicated into my game
You need to mention that you will be tracking your progress on your blog and reviewing each development as you go. Additionally you need to mention that you will review your final outcome against the proposal to identify if you have produced what you intend to produce.

#Fruit ninja vr free free#
Rec Room takes the concept of The Lab, throws in a bit of social media, and plants it all firmly in your high school gym class. Even though it is clearly a tech demo of what the Vive is capable of, The Lab is a great way to have fun without committing to hours of playtime. Allowing players to explore a real-world mountain peak, throw robots boxes in Slingshot, destroy meteors and baddies in Xortex, defend a castle in Longbow, or move from demo to demo within The Hub, The Lab offers a huge number of experiences with fantastic graphical fidelity. The Lab is a combination of minigames and VR experiences that works as the perfect introduction to the genre for new players. With a wide range of plane options, as well as several playable ground vehicles, War Thunder provides hours of entertainment but enough depth to divide the truly skilled players from the lucky. The game pulls players into the major battles of World War II and the Korean War and pits them against dozens of others. Gamers who like free VR games and also enjoy huge, large-scale battles will find themselves right at home with War Thunder. Sound like fun? Those familiar with the television show Rick and Morty will already know what they are in for! Tax fraud is only the beginning of the horrors that you may encounter whilst rummaging through offices, putting on VR goggles inside VR, and generally tearing apart the human body.

One of our free VR games that is definitely not for children, Accounting takes a dark and comedic stance on the profession of accounting. In addition to a single-player campaign, Beat Saber features a multiplayer component that lets you challenge your friends or random opponents around the world, so there’s always something to do. Each level of the game’s numerous levels has been created by hand-not generated by an algorithm-to ensure the best experience possible. With a saber in each hand, your goal is to slash colorful blocks representing music beats as they come flying at you. While the game certainly has some weakness-just like every other open-world game-the sheer amount of entertainment it can provide is astonishing.īeat Saber is a unique rhythm game set in a neon-lit futuristic world. The VR version of Fallout 4 includes the complete core game with all main gameplay systems reimagined for virtual reality. First published by Bethesda Softworks in 2015, the game has you playing as the sole survivor of Vault 111 while giving you the freedom to explore the world destroyed by nuclear war at your own pace.

🎮 Let's Play: Fallout 4 VR (PC-VR), Beta Update 1.0.30.0 👍 (Part 2)
Our first session of Fallout 4 VR was not as smooth as I hoped. We encountered issues from capturing gameplay footage, to overall blurry visuals and my eventual VR sickness by the end of the stream. However there was enough promise throughout playing the game to come back and troubleshoot gameplay capture options, opt into the recent Beta Update 1.0.30.0 and mentally & physically prepare myself for more potential VR sickness. Let's try this again!

2019- Top 7 (And 1)
Another year has come to an end and thus the hotly anticipated Top 7 (And 1) from your ‘average at best’ Ozzdog12 is here for you to feast your eyes upon. 2019 was an extremely odd year for me, gaming wise. As parenthood has taken the full brunt of my time, my gaming time and the choices of what games I decided to play, have changed. I played several games this year that, under any previous year I may have stuck with longer or tried again, but as time for gaming has become more and more thin, I now have less ‘patience’ to stick with a BIG RPG (Disco Elysium, one day I’ll get to you). Now I’m going to contradict my previous sentence with this next sentence. I was unemployed for a stretch of 5 weeks and in between looking for jobs I also found myself with a decent amount of time to play some games. What I did with that time is played 2 games that ultimately made the list, for two very different reasons. I also cleared out a chunk of backlog games (Finally beating Diablo 3 for one, thank you Switch) and played several, shorter smaller games in the process. If interested in my previous Top 7 (And 1) 2017 & 2018.
And now on to the And 1 this year
Favorite game that came out in 2019 that actually came out 20+ years ago: Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening (Switch)
Tumblr media
This one was actually a hard one to decide as Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition also released this year. AOE2 is the one game I may have put the most time into ever, cumulatively. But I’m giving the nod to Link’s Awakening simply because its BRAND NEW to me. I did not play the original release and this has been an absolute joy to play and is by far, the best Zelda available on Switch. The updated graphics are gorgeous and the art style is great. I haven’t completed the game yet, but I’m slowly chipping away at it at night. It feels and plays like a Zelda game but updated properly to a modern console to make it feel like a brand new game released in 2019 and not just a reskin/up-resed re-release. The game is also structured in a way that appeals to me more than Breath of the Wild was (see 2017 And One for reference). The world feels big, but is contained in a clever way to make it FEEL bigger than it actually is.
Number  7: Rage 2 (PS4)
Tumblr media
Rage 2 is a very weird game. I don’t mean it’s weird in the sense that nothing clicks or that its bad. In fact, it’s a joy to play (especially is you love iD shooters). It’s weird because outside of the gameplay mechanics, it’s fairly barren (intentional or not). And I mean that in terms of both story, things to do and the world itself. Having very little to do with the previous Rage (which I really enjoyed on the 360), Rage 2 starts off quick and with a bang. You choose which version of the character you want to be, learn the mechanics and then are eventually sent to a town. There are a total of 6 ‘story’ missions that are stretched out by requiring you to complete tasks for one of the 3 town leaders who you’ve enlisted for help to take down the General. Once you do this, you fight the General and that’s kind’ve it. Now along the way, you will kill a bunch of mutants and humans alike. There are 3 factions (4 if you count the Ghosts in the DLC) that are in an ever engaging gauntlet to the death and you get to play janitor by spilling more guts and blood, but none of it really matters, the Factions I mean. There are a few Crusher Mutants (BIG MUTANTS) to also fight, but they are essentially extra heavy bullet sponges. Now, I know I haven’t really sold you on it, but here’s the thing. I REALLY enjoyed RAGE 2. It was the perfect game to play during the summer. Due to a personal situation I was dealing with (the looming unemployment) it was nice to just sit down at night, turned my brain off and just kill things. It reminded me of a simpler time in my youth playing games like Doom. Same vibe honestly. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more of a story and narrative driven player, but Rage 2 scratched a nostalgia itch for me at the perfect time.
Number 6: Concrete Genie (PS4)
Tumblr media
Concrete Genie is a game that is honestly out of left field for me these days. Not that I don’t like these types of games, it’s just as previous stated, time is somewhat of a precious commodity and had Concrete Genie come out in any other year, I probably would’ve skipped it entirely. However, it didn’t and I’m glad I picked this up for $20. It also scratched a nostalgia itch and reminded me very much of the PS2 era of games like Sly Cooper and Jax and Daxter. You play a kid who is bullied (something I am familiar with first hand, sadly) for being a loner and an artist. His creature drawings come to life with the help of a magic paint brush and your objective to put color back into an abandon town and bring it back to life. There is a VR component I wasn’t able to play because I don’t have a PSVR. The game is fairly simply and doesn’t deviate far from that formula. There is very little combat and just enough variety in the monster’s you can make to keep you going. It’s also fairly short. I was able to complete and collect everything in around 7-8 hours. Having a complete game in a bite size package is something I long for these days.
Number 5: The Outer Worlds (PS4)
Tumblr media
This game should be higher on the list but I put it here simply because while I have played it a fair amount, I haven’t played it enough to warrant it being higher. I’m maybe halfway through? I love Bethesda Fallouts (And Obsidian’s New Vegas) and this is an improved New Vegas in space with a more cheeky approach. The Outer Worlds never takes itself too seriously and revels in its sarcasm. The companions are all mostly likeable enough and each planet has felt distinctive enough to entice me to keep exploring. The mechanics are improved and the overall gameplay is better than New Vegas.  Its structured just like a Fallout game, so there is a lot of comfort there. However,  just like any open world RPG, sitting down for less than an hour and trying to accomplish anything is hard. The Outer Worlds is best played in big chunks. It’s at the top of my list to finish in 2020.
Number 4: A Plague Tale (PS4)
Tumblr media
A Plague Tale was THAT game that was on everyone’s ‘Hidden Gems’ list. I had seen a trailer around E3 and it intrigued me enough to check it out. I completed it over a whole weekend, a rarity. The game isn’t perfect, but everything is serviceable enough to work within the confines of what it’s trying to accomplish. It has some technical flaws and the occasional hiccup, but I’m a sucker for 3rd person action adventure games. The game is mostly centered around stealth with combat as a mostly secondary option. The game takes place in France in 1348 during the rat plague. You play as the daughter of an alchemist and your brother has been sick since birth. Once your village has been raided by the Inquisition, you are cast out to find help. The plague has taken over the majority of the country, but it isn’t until later in the game where the game takes a turn into the fantasy in a major way. You meet up with some really likeable characters with different personality traits along the way that really kept the story moving in an interesting way. The story was really grim at times, but honestly kept me hooked until the final chapter. The boss battle was extremely frustrating. With a sequel being announced, I am extremely interested in where they take the next chapter.
Number 3: Katana ZERO (Switch)
Tumblr media
Katana ZERO rules. There is a fine line where a game is challenging and when a game is unfair. I like a challenge, but I don’t want to work (games like Dark Souls are work). KZ is very similar in style, gameplay, tone, and even music to Hotline Miami. The difference being KZ is a side scroller instead of top down. You play a samurai in a quasi-dystopian future after a war. You are programmed killing machine…or are you? The story is fairly heavy and can bring up some tough subjects. KZ is pretty challenging, especially later in the game, but never once did I feel the game was cheap or unfair. Every time I died (MANY, MANY TIMES) it was always my fault. Either I didn’t plan my attack correctly, I hit the wrong button, took the wrong path, or didn’t time it right. The game has a nifty way of dealing with ‘deaths’ in the game using a neat rewind feature. When you complete a level, it shows you a replay in ‘real time’ giving you a nice recap of your work. Every time I completed a level, I felt a sense of accomplishment. My Switch says I put around 5 hours or more into it once I completed the final level, but it honestly felt longer than that, in a good way. KZ is an absolute blast to play and you should go play it right now!
Number 2: Gears 5 (Xbox One)
Tumblr media
I’m a fan of the Gears of War series. The first Gears of War still being my favorite of the series. As time has passed, I’ve become less interested in the series as a whole but still interested enough to play every entry. I thought Gears 4 was the Force Awakens of the series. Essentially a retelling of the same story, with a new coat of paint and new characters with the old ones sprinkled in. Gears 4 was ultimately, fine. So I was actually excited for Gears 5 was going to go and to see how they built upon 4 with a focus on Kait instead of a Fenix. Halfway through the story, the group is divided and it starts to take a different tone. Gears 5 experiments with a first of the series, a semi-open world. I thought it broke up the monotony of wall hug, shoot, reload, repeat. I finished the story in a few days and had a good time with it, though once again, the ending being kind’ve abrupt. The series has a knack for being sort’ve slow, then suddenly turning it to 11, then ending.  I wished the campaign was longer, but it’s still solid. Gears 5 introduced a new mode called Escape, where you and two other players plant a bomb and try to escape a level with limited ammo. There is weekly a revolving door of new levels, which is nice, but each level is just reusing assets. I suspect with time and each new Operation (Season) that will be expanded. Horde mode is back and the character classes are fun. New characters have been added and will continue to be added, but they are an absolute grind to unlock (But you can always pay for them!) The reason Gears 5 is this high is mostly due to the amount of time I spent playing multiplayer. As stated, I loved the original Gears of War and put an insane amount of time into the multiplayer. That was in 2007 and the older I’ve gotten, my desire to invest into multiplayer has waned, almost completely. Once again though, right time, right place. I spent almost the entire month of October, logging on every night, completing challenging and playing online. Something I haven’t done since I was a freshman in college. I had an absolute blast. While I don’t delve into online as feverishly as I did in October, I still occasionally dabble when I get the chance.
Number 1: Mortal Kombat 11 (PS4)
Tumblr media
As if this was going to be anything else. I’m a Mortal Kombat mark, plain and simple. I’ve loved the series my entire life. I love the lore, I love how ridiculously violent it is, how goofy and bat shit insane the story has evolved. I love it all. But its not all gore and lore, Mortal Kombat is a supreme fighting game. It’s not a nuanced as the likes of Street Fighter, but its infinitely deeper than a game like Smash Bros. Mortal Kombat is in a good sweet spot for both casuals and hardcore fighting fans. MK11 has maybe the greatest in-depth tutorial that has ever been made in any fighting game. It not only teaches you how to play, it teaches you the terminology. The story picks up right after MKX, with Raiden upset with everyone and taking matters into his own hands by torturing Shinnok. Liu Kang and Kitana rule the Netherrealm. Raiden plans an attack where he is essentially the Trojan Horse. All goes according to plan, until Kronika, The Time Keeper, decides she doesn’t like this anymore and eventually brings back some old friends to help her change time (again) and finally eliminate Raiden from existence. In doing this, Kronika has made all those mirror matches from previous games cannon. The production level and story mode in Netherealm games are on another level compared to other fighting games and they continue that trend in MK11. They implement the gear system from Injustice 2 into MK11 and its fine. The Krypt is amazing and is full of secrets. The Living Towers have returned, this time in the form of the ever changing “Towers of Time”. The roster, which is what everyone really cares about isn’t the worst but isn’t the best. None of the new characters are all that fun (Cetrion, Geras, & Kollector) and the returning roster was missing some notable characters. The DLC thus far has been fairly underwhelming compared to MKX. It was nice to see Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, & Sindel return (all 3 should’ve been in the main roster) but Terminator is lame. MKX had the likes of Tremor, Tanya, & Predator. MK11 seems to break what was a fun tradition in DLC having new, MK characters (Skarlett and Tremor, respectively). While I do think there is another set coming after Spawn, if the leak is true, then it seems underwhelming. I played MK11 pretty religiously for almost 2 months and still play at least once or twice a week. I love MK!

Week 1 Reflection: Kathryn McCawley
Kathryn McCawley
The game that I first played that got me into VR was the Tender Claws 2017 game Virtual, Virtual Reality, which I played on the oculus go. I found this a really compelling experience as along with being an interactive game, it is also a dystopian narrative that you uncover as you play the game. In the game, you play as a human who has just been hired by Activitude, a company that contracts out human workers to AI beings. For each job, you put on a headset that brings you into your hired boss’s world, and you are told to do a weird number of things, which inevitably leads to them berating you for your inadequacies. I absolutely adored this game because not only did it merge the medium of VR and games with storytelling, but it also created a dystopian narrative that was inspired by tech hype, Silicon Valley, and the ethical implications of the gig economy. There was just so much meta storytelling that weaves the narrative together - a small note being the sensation of wearing a VR headset during the game and how when you are entering a new level/Activitude gig, a virtual headset snaps to your face. It really makes you think about a future world built around the very headset you’re wearing.
Tumblr media
For the actual gaming experience, it was my first VR game, so I did struggle a bit with the gameplay. I was using the oculus go, so though it was nice that I could sit down and play the game, using the controllers for movement was not the most intuitive. I got a couple of levels into the game and when I stopped playing, I didn’t feel nauseous per se, but it did leave me with a kind of light-headed/displaced feeling. I think that may have been a product of the fact that it was my first VR experience and that the narrative itself is very eery.
When I played this game, I soon afterwards played Fallout 4. Though I liked the game and it did have a particular resonance with me given that it’s based Boston/the greater Massachusetts area (where I have lived for the past ten ish years), I thought a lot about how the VR game, by virtue of its narrative and how you are the physical player in the game, invites a much more bodily and personally intimate relationship with the game and narrative. This is to say that the reason that I am inspired by VR is because I think it offers a really unique way to have people intimately fused to a narrative gameplay and story that cannot be reached in other ways.

Best for Kids: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 at Amazon, “A charming and creative shooter that provides a lighter, family-friendly option."
Our Top Picks
Best Overall: Apex Legends
Tumblr media
No one quite knew what to make of Apex Legends when it was stealth released back in February 2019, on the same day as its announcement. But shortly thereafter, it took the digital world by storm. Going after the battle royale crown is a truly challenging conceit, but with a focus on strong gameplay and fluid controls, Apex Legends has quickly risen to the top of the pack, especially in the category of first-person shooters.
The premise is simple: 20 teams of three drop from a ship and land, picking up randomly generated loot as an ever-enclosing ring of death surrounds them. The goal is even simpler: survive, and win. Where the game shines is in its unique convergence of genres. It's hero shooter (see: Overwatch) meets battle royale (see: Fortnite), so while it features a diverse assortment of guns and character abilities, how you use them depends on your place in line ... waiting for death. After all, only one team comes out in top.
Most Popular: Fortnite
Tumblr media
If you are itching more for a third-person battle royale experience, then turn your head to the most popular video game in the world right now: Epic Games' Fortnite. While its premise is ubiquitous, after playing it you'll understand why. The creativity and freedom it encourages leads to a boatload of fun, no matter how many times you queue up a new game.
Setting the template for what a battle royale game really could be, Fortnite is fundamentally rock solid. Its main value proposition is the flow of frequent updates, with everything from game modes, new guns, vehicles, and surprise celebrity cameo appearances touching down weekly. Strong shooting mechanics, unique visuals, and stable gameplay are expected from a game of its popularity, and Fortnite delivers on all fronts.
Best Characters: Overwatch
Tumblr media
Overwatch was officially released to the public about three years ago ... although people have been playing it for longer than even that. First soft-launched (in closed beta) in 2015, Overwatch has been a mainstay of the current generation of consoles for quite a while now. And Blizzard, no stranger to supporting a game long into its life cycle, has felt no need to ever stop releasing new content, characters, and modes for Overwatch.
Now, some years later, the amount of pure content available to you within Overwatch is staggering. Still a multiplayer team-based shooter at its core, Overwatch now boasts an impressive amount of content for players to experience: dozens of maps, over thirty characters, and seven distinct modes, to name some. Even better? More content is still arriving at a steady pace for the game, and all of it is completely free to everyone. With so much to explore, it’s no wonder Overwatch remains one of the most popular shooters ever made.
Best Multiplayer: Call of Duty Black Ops IIII
Tumblr media
Variety is the name of the game when it comes to Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII. Even with the developers at Treyarch foregoing a standalone campaign with the latest installment of their flagship franchise, you won’t be longing for content. There's enough to see, play, customize, unlock, explore, and share to keep you going for years. And that's before all the downloadable content in the pipeline.
Of course, there’s the flagship multiplayer mode, which is as polished and fun as ever. New additions this time around include predictive recoil and a specially enhanced ballistics mode, in addition to the change in the franchise’s standard regenerative health for a manual healing system. All these additions make for a more rewarding, engrossing experience. Combined with the return of the Black Ops series mainstay “Zombies” mode, and a full-fledged battle royale mode called “Blackout,” there’s more here than ever before for a Call of Duty title.
Best Tactics: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
Tumblr media
There’s a battle royale game for everyone, it seems, what with Fortnite’s more cartoony third-person aesthetic and Apex Legend’s fast-paced, sci-fi trappings. But for those looking for something a more traditional, you don’t have to look much further than the granddaddy of the genre itself: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). Launched in early access in March 2017, PUBG set the foundation for the genre.
But while others have moved onto the supernatural, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds sticks to what it knows, with boots-to-the-ground combat, driving, and first-person shooter mechanics. However, in a genre like this, less is truly more, and the pure visceral experience of playing Pis enhanced by this realistic, no-frills approach. And with the game still being updated with new content, maps, and graphical upgrades on a frequent basis, there has never been a better time to jump back into the militaristic world of PUBG.
Best Visuals: Rage 2
Tumblr media
With its punk rock aesthetic and absolutely manic gameplay, Rage 2 has made a big impression on the first-person genre. Developer Id Software’s long-awaited sequel to the 2010 original is unlike any other shooter currently on the PlayStation 4. Its impeccable style gleams and oozes a funky good time, making it stand out amongst the crowd of more drab looking military fare.
In Rage 2, you play as a bespoke ranger who goes by the name Walker, fighting for survival in a world torn apart by an asteroid that ravaged the planet years earlier. Life is scarce, and what remains of humanity has been mutated into deranged mutants. Armed with telekinesis, not to mention a huge arsenal of weaponry and several vehicles at your side, it's up to you to keep some sanity in this deadly world.
Best Open World: Far Cry: New Dawn
Tumblr media
Ubisoft took a big swing when it released Far Cry: New Dawn. Unlike the Far Cry games of old, this sequel/spin-off takes place in a nuclear apocalypse following the shocking conclusion of Far Cry 5. You're set loose in this new iteration of Hope County, as a character known only as The Captain, on a quest to restore peace and order to the new world. Cults run wild, survivors need your help, and there's always the occasional mountain lion or bear to fend off while completing side quests and collecting missions.
Unlike most other games that take place in the midst of nuclear fallout, the world of Far Cry: New Dawn is not a bleak and grey one. In fact, the natural environment of the world is thriving after the initial fallout, with new types of flowers and vegetation springing up all over the place. And with the game’s huge open world at your disposal, you’ll have plenty of time to explore every nook-and-cranny of the new Hope County as you work your way through the game’s various collection of criminal bandits, crazed cultist, and everything in between.
Best Co-Op: Destiny 2
Tumblr media
The sequel to the loot-driven phenomenon Destiny, Bungie’s Destiny 2 once again throws you into a massive world of missions, weapons, and sci-fi cosmic enemies. Set in our solar system, your fireteam of three teammates quest to defend the last colony of Earthlings from evil alien menaces.
Building off the “shared universe” concept of the original game, you have the option to play the game completely PvE (player versus the environment) or PvP (player versus player), with both modes serving as a vehicle to reflexive gun handling and innovative RPG elements. However, the game truly shines the most in the PvE scenarios, in which you get to team up online with up to five other players in order to perform various mission and raids.
Best for Kids: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2
Tumblr media
The breadth of shooters available on the PlayStation 4 aren’t just all gloomy, self-serious military simulators and mature shoot ‘em ups, or shmups. And for something a little more fantastical and kid-friendly, you can’t go wrong with Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2.
A sequel to the original third-person shooter and a spin-off overall of the timeless Plants vs Zombies free-to-play mobile game, Garden Warfare 2 ups the ante from the previous entry in the franchise by adding new modes like Graveyard Ops, a Zombie-helmed take on the original’s Garden Ops, and Herbal Assault, which sees the zombies defending their base from a besieging horde of plants.
What to Look for in a PS4 Shooter Game
Free online multiplayer - Look for a PS4 shooter game that works online without PS Plus if you don’t subscribe to Sony’s premium online gaming service. Most PS4 games require an active subscription if you want to take them online, but there are some great options that let you play with, and against, your friends for free.
Virtual reality - If you have PlayStation VR, then you have to check out some of the great PS4 shooter games that are designed to work with Sony’s virtual reality headset. Playing a first-person shooter in virtual reality is a game-changing experience, and you can grab a PSVR Aim Controller for an even more immersive experience.
Open world - Most shooters are pretty linear in their campaigns, and multiplayer matches take place on relatively limited maps. If you want a break from that type of shooter, look for one that’s built on an open world, where you have a ton of freedom to go where you want and shoot what you want, on your own time.

(Inhale) Your E3 thoughts, PLEASE! I want them! I need them! :C
I’ve gotten a number of questions about my observations on E3 to varying degrees, so I figured I’d just have one big E3 “thoughts” post. In no particular order:
Tumblr media
Co-op is big this year
A good number of the marketing for upcoming games is dedicated to “play with your friends”. Anthem, Fallout 76, Pokemon Let’s Go, The Division 2, Skull and Bones, plus (presumably) Gears 5, Halo Infinite, BLOPS 4, Destiny’s upcoming expansion, and so on.
Nobody cares about VR anymore
Did you notice any VR games getting any attention at all? Neither did I.
Tumblr media
Publishers are backing away from Loot Boxes
The only thing most interviewees had to say about loot boxes was “they aren’t in my game”.
Where did Procedurally Generated Content go?
Looks like a lot of publishers have backed off from procedurally generated content as well. Authored and directed experiences were everywhere. Except for Fortnite.
Tumblr media
Ubisoft Montreal is trying their hand at being Bioware
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey seems to be inheriting a lot from Bioware games, including optional LGBT romance content and a lot of role-playing context. Also, it’s an Assassin’s Creed game that doesn’t seem to be about assassins, like Dragon Age is a series that isn’t about dragons.
The Most American Game of All Time is getting remastered
From the studio that would eventually bring you Dark Souls… [Metal Wolf Chaos] is coming to the new generation. It is a game about the president of the United States piloting an armored mech to wage a one-man war against an evil terrorist army led by his own vice president. I am not making this up.
Tumblr media
Gamers: Whoa, lesbian kiss. Game Devs: Whoa, MOTION CAPTURED KISS
Naughty Dog continues to do some really amazing animation work. More notably to people like me, they motion captured the world’s first good-looking in-game kiss. That’s pretty wacky - most of the time facial motion capture has a huge headset that gets in the way of locking lips, so they had to get kind of creative with the entire process.
Holy Crap, Naughty Dog’s animators and animation engineers are still ridiculous
Every time there’s a Naughty Dog trailer of some kind, they show some really amazing animation tech. It tends to be little things that most gamers don’t consciously observe, like seamless transitions between partial animation states. In the Last of Us 2′s gameplay trailer, they smoothed out almost all of the small weird animation pops that we take for granted, causing animators and engineers around the world to geek out. Like this:

AAA Visuals are getting more pronounced
The real tentpole blockbuster AAA titles have really differentiated themselves visually from other lower-budget titles. The number of effects, quality of the materials and assets, shader work, and all the extra bells and whistles are making the AAAA games even bigger and more distinct. A lot of people are hotly anticipating Cyberpunk 2077, but its visuals just don’t stand up (technically) to games like Gears, Division, BLOPS, Battlefield, etc.
Nintendo is probably in for a rough year
Nintendo’s stock price fell about 7% after their press conference, ostensibly because they are behind on their sales target for the year and the only system movers they announced are Smash 5 and Pokemon Let’s Go. The Labo did not prove to be the financial success they had hoped for, so it is looking unlikely they will hit their guidance for the year. That makes shareholders nervous and unhappy.
Tumblr media
Indie AAA publishing suffered a pretty big setback
Microsoft bought Ninja Theory (and a few other indies). Self-publishing and attaining success like Ninja Theory is super duper hard. I’m glad that Ninja Theory has better financial backing now, and I hope that their deal with Microsoft is a good one, but I do wish that there were more mid-sized indie publishers out there with more success.
Crunch is over. I have time again.
Hopefully, this means the FANTa Project can resume next week.
The FANTa Project is currently on hiatus while I am crunching at work.
[What is the FANTa project?] [Git the FANTa Project]

Overly Belated Game Impressions from PAX Aus 2018
Tumblr media
Every year I go to PAX Aus with some close friends to check out the Incredible Future of Games that everyone else already checked out six months ago. This is usually coupled with checking out some wonderfully well-preserved old games and hardware, along with some typically wonderfully weird indie stuff I've never heard about before. Every year, I've written up a little review of things I've played (or watched get played) on an old private forum some friends maintain, but this year, I've figured, fuck it, I might as well post it publicly, right?
Not Indie Games
Tumblr media
Super Smash Bros Ultimate sure is a Smash game. That's not a bad thing, but since this was the same demo build from E3 (so before the Castlevania reveals) there wasn't a huge amount of surprises - just a damn good fightfest. Amusingly, the demo booths were split into two groups - For Fun (items on, Switch Pro Controller) and For Glory (items off, the new Gamecube controllers). New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe has a nonsensical name and spawned an even more nonsensical meme. The demo had six levels to play - three from the base game, three from the Luigi expansion - with both the new and old characters to play. It doesn't look like anyone other than Toadette can get the meme crown, meaning players using that character won't have to jostle for powerups in multiplayer. I didn't play Pokemon Let's Go Eevee because the queue was like 90 minutes long, but my friend braved it and gave it a resounding "ehhhh" with a hand gesture resembling a teetering see-saw. Apparently the co-op stuff wasn’t available in the demo, either, which concerned my friend since that was specifically what he was interested in.
V-Rally 4 looks nice aesthetically, but the gameplay seems pretty "eh". The name seems to be about the most interesting part. Dragonball FighterZ for Switch seems like a pretty decent port. I don’t know much about the source material or original game, but it ran fast and I didn't notice any obvious hitching or whatever.
Luigi's Mansion for Nintendo 3DS is... a 3DS port of the Gamecube launch title. It ran at a solid 30fps... a whole lot better than I recall Luigi's Mansion 2/Dark Moon running, but I was also using a vanilla 3DS for that game while the demo units at PAX were New models.
Indie Stuff
Tumblr media
The Xbox Adaptive Controller was present as part of a demo setup for a version of One More Line. I wasn't expecting to have to push the Big Novelty Button as hard as I did, I thought it'd be a lighter touch for some reason. Although I know the button kinda isn't the point of the thing...
Supertrucks Offroad is a PC adaption of a mobile take on old top-down racing games. There's promise here, but the current handling and physics leave a lot to be desired. Hopefully it continues to develop and evolve.
Infinity Heroes is a card game with some simplified mechanics and animated versions of all the card graphics. Has potential, but still plenty of rough edges and pre-alpha grit to sand out.
Metal Wolf Chaos XD sure is a port of an Xbox game. It feels pretty well done, all things considered - the framerate is great, the controls are responsive, and the English subtitles are sometimes even connected to what's being said by the characters!
Ghoul Britannia: Land of Hope and Gorey is a point-and-click adventure game that, unexpectedly, uses a Fallout-esque isometric perspective instead of the usual side-on.
Tumblr media
Table of Tales is a VR tabletop RPG where you control an entire party of Scoundrels by moving pieces around a constantly-changing board and playing ability cards. Since it was a VR game, there was a long sign-up queue to play, so the developers set up a little booth where Arbitrix, the game's DM (and, incidentally, a mechanical talking bird), would cheerfully explain the game for you. He said my goatee was perfect for a pirate adventure. It was probably intended as a compliment.
Supermarket Shriek is very similar to a game I prototyped years ago, except it's got a Supermarket Sweep theme and shrieking goats. Also, it's actually getting finished and has more than one level, which is another differentiator. Use the shoulder triggers to make the characters inside a shopping trolley scream their lungs out, propelling the trolley and allowing you to steer it through silly retail-themed obstacle courses.
You probably think, based on the squat protagonist and camera angle, that Tunic is a riff on Zelda: A Link to the Past. Surprise! It's actually a riff on Zelda: Ocarina of Time! The combat is very similar, with a dodge/roll button and Z-targeting (although I guess it's more RT-targeting now) that jumps to the next enemy upon beating your current one. I can't say enough nice things about the graphics... One thing that's interesting is that the entire game is in a fictional language. This includes stuff like the pause menu!
Dash Blitz is a pretty amateurish attempt at a Smash-esque platform fighter. The "feel" just isn't there, sadly.
Nom Nom Apocalypse is a top-down dual-stick roguelite about fighting off food monsters. It looks pretty interesting, but sadly I didn’t get to go back and give it a hands-on look.
Henry Mosse and the Wormhole Conspiracy is a good old-fashioned point and click adventure. The graphics are wonderfully drawn in a cartoon style, but they suffer from really puppet-y animation like an old Flash cartoon, and it breaks my heart.
Tumblr media
No Moss Studios bought along Beam Team, a couch co-op game about fighting a giant donut that I didn’t get to try, as well as a collection of weird little Patreon-funded oddities like Sprout Up, a simple little mobile game about weaving through vines, and My Magpie, a bird-aiding simulator of sorts.
Little Reaper is a platformer with a fun movement twist in that you can throw your scythe - which travels in an arc like a hammer in Mario - and teleport to where it lands. I'll have to give this a closer look.
Mars Underground is an Earthbound-esque RPG-style adventure game with a Groundhog Day-style conceit of being stuck in a time-loop. I can't really say it struck me, to be honest.
Scout's Honor is a co-op party game where four players team up to set-up a camp-site in a limited amount of time while dealing with hazards and such. It looks kinda cute, reminds me of Overcooked a bit.
Ice Caves of Europa is a rather odd-controlling game where you pilot a hover-drone controlled by an artificial intelligence. This one probably takes a bit more time to wrap your head around than a convention center allows.
Introspect looks really cool - a Shadow of the Colossus-style boss rush with an emphasis on movement tricks and agility. I didn't get to play it while I was there, but the developers were handing out download codes for the show floor build. It seems pretty fun, although it still needs a good deal of polish.
Soundfall is a dual-stick rhythm-shooter where you have to get to the end of a course before the song ends, with rewards for shooting and slashing to the beat ala Crypt of the NecroDancer. One to watch.
Tumblr media
Ticket to Earth is a tactical strategy RPG ala Fire Emblem with a tile-matching mechanic that makes how you move to your enemies even more important by limiting your movement and charging your special abilities. The comic artwork is nice, although the talking heads only seem to have one or two facial expressions.
Nova Flow is a first-person speedrunner that reminds me of a blend of Mirror's Edge's DLC maps and that one paint game that got incorporated into Portal 2. One of the demo levels was apparently one of the hardest levels in the game, and the developer was quite impressed at my getting within inches of completing it before the demo timer ran out...
Dawnblade seems to be an attempt at doing the whole Diablo thing on a phone, with the player hacking their way through short, pre-made maps. Visually, it looks like any of a million other games riffing off of Warcraft 3, and it seems to have some weird mobile game trappings like a stamina system to limit the amount of time you can play in a period of time.
Little Bit Lost is a survival game where you've been shrunk down to the point where ants tower over you and are powerful monsters. This one felt real early. It has promise, but needs a lot of polish to truly deliver on it.
Rogue Singularity is a 3D platformer with procgen levels. The feel didn't gel with me, and I can't really say I liked it all that much. It didn't help that the Switch port I played seemed to lack anti-aliasing entirely, giving the entire scene an unpleasant jagged look.
Ashen looks utterly fascinating - an open-world Souls-esque action RPG with Journey-style "passive" co-op where you can occasionally meet other, anonymous players out in the world and either help them or leave them to their fate. It looks really pretty.
Speaking Simulator is a hilarious puzzler where you have to manually operate a human mouth in order to say Entirely Normal Phrases in order to convince people that you are absolutely a human and not a murder robot in disguise.
Tumblr media
Untitled Goose Game had a massive queue that I was absolutely not going to fuck with. :(
