Protesting Indian farmers are harassing BJP and JJP politicians all over India by blocking them from campaigning and protesting at their homes and offices.
Its seven days to the Punjab civic polls, and senior BJP Jalandhar leader Ramesh Sharma is in a quandary. “They follow us everywhere,” he says.
In 2015, the then ruling Akali-Dal BJP combine had swept the civic polls, with the BJP outperforming its senior partner. This time, the BJP has not been able to find candidates for two-thirds of the seats, nor to campaign in the rest. As the protesters at Delhi’s borders press on, Punjab BJP leaders are nervously watching the “pakka dharnas” outside homes of more than 30 of them — unceasing for four months, continuing day and night, drawing people from up to 40 km away, organised by farm unions, under tents that can hold 200 people. The banners at the sites demand that the “black” farm laws be repealed, ask why farmers are being called terrorists, and exhort: ‘Aao saare Dilli chaliye (Let’s all go to Delhi)’.
The BJP has hardly stirred out for campaigning, for fear of protesters surrounding their venues. Many BJP leaders have quit — over 20 of them in January alone — including the only Sikh face in the party’s core committee in the state, Malwinder Singh Kang. Partymen have removed the BJP flag from their vehicles, and check farmers’ protest plans before leaving homes, says a senior BJP leader.
...
In Rampura Phul area of Bathinda, a pakka dharna outside the factory of Makhan Jindal, a BJP state executive committee member, on since mid-October, was lifted on January 10 only after Jindal resigned from the party.
...
At several places, BJP candidates are not contesting on party symbol, [but instead as independents]”. Among the BJP leaders contesting as an Independent is Bathinda BJP chief Vinod Binta. He says he had no choice; “protesters are not allowing us to hold election meetings”. Careful not to provoke the farmers, he adds, “They have all the right to protest but they are getting too personal.”
Protesters have also vented anger on the Akali Dal, with slogans forcing its chief Sukhbir Badal to abandon a speech on farm laws at the Fatehgarh Sahib gurdwara on December 28. He had to be escorted out via the back gate. Mystery surrounds the February 3 attack on Sukhbir’s vehicle in his constituency Fazilka, while he was accompanying a party candidate for filing of nomination for the civic polls.
...
It’s not just the ruling BJP that has been hemmed in. In a worse situation is its partner JJP and Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala. The farmers have announced they won’t allow any public meetings of BJP-JJP leaders.
The CM has had his Kaimla venue vandalised and his cavalcade forced back with black flags in Ambala; Chautala has had a temporary helipad in his constituency Jind uprooted to thwart his arrival; minister Kamlesh Dhanda has had her cavalcade chased in Kaithal; the BJP has had to cancel training sessions and a protest on the Satlej-Yamuna Link issue in Fatehabad as farmers called it a bid to divide them along Punjab and Haryana lines. Outside many villages, boards bar entry of BJP and JJP leaders.Says Raj Kumar, a farmer from Jind district, “BJP, JJP leaders can come out only if they hide their identity, wearing masks.”

Protesting farmers dig up a helipad in Jind so JJP politician Dushyant Chautala can’t land and campaign in the area.

I can remember walking up to my professor's office, running through our hypothetical conversation over and over again. It was 2015 and I was in my final year of undergrad at UC Berkeley. I was taking a South Asian literature course and as usual, I was the only Black American student in my class. The secret always waiting to unfold - I am also Punjabi. Earlier that week my professor had asked the “non-South Asians in the class” to answer a question on Indian history. When I didn’t raise my hand or respond to his call, he looked at me with confusion. During that same class, he made mention of another Berkeley professor who was teaching Punjabi - my native tongue. I can understand bits and pieces and can say the basics but I never fully learned my language. My mother sent me to Punjabi school at Gurdwara as a young child but she soon pulled me out. I think she intuitively felt my deep discomfort. I knew what they were all thinking, what is she doing here? I don’t think the other children had the language to express their confusion or curiosity. I hope the parents of today are combating this outdated dilemma around mixed-race identity.
So I pulled myself into my professor’s office, sat before him, and candidly expressed my desire to learn Punjabi. He was immediately taken aback by this. “Okay, why do you want to learn Punjabi?” He asked as if to assume I was trying to appropriate his culture. I tilted my head, smirked, and said, “Because I am Punjabi.” At that moment he softened entirely, realizing he had made a huge mistake. “Oh, well I couldn’t tell.” At least he didn’t tell me I was wrong or make me prove my roots. This is usually the response - “I don’t believe you, or “Prove it,” or “Are you sure?”.
I do not have access to Punjabi or Desi spaces in a way that feels comfortable or at least without a need to explain my presence. My father’s words always echo through my internal dialogue. “You are not Indian, they don’t like you. They didn’t like me.” Mixed race people have often dictated their own experiences rather than asked. It is assumed how we navigate or should navigate the world. And I am grateful that my mother held doors open to forbidden spaces and allowed me time to find balance with my own identity.
My mother, Arun Vir was born in Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab, India into a traditional Sikh family. Our family soon left India and immigrated to the United Kingdom in the 1960s. Always a rebel and never a conformist, Arun sought a career as a filmmaker and artist in London, eventually working for the BBC. My mother is a recognized writer, director, and producer in Los Angeles, CA, having been honored by the Academy, several film festivals, and her peers.
When my mother had me, my grandparents disowned both of us for a short period. This experience is juxtaposed with another brief memory where my grandparents helped my mother and I move from New York City to Los Angeles. In the midst of our stressful move, they decided to live with us for a few months to help us settle in. When they left I was devastated. They were devastated. We fell in love with each other during our time of cohabitation. It was impossible for them to deny me as a grandchild any longer. Many of my other cousins, especially my Mauritian cousins ❤️, endured this same painful rejection. We are all still finding ways to negotiate our family’s unpleasant history. By the time my mother married my stepfather and gave birth to my brother, our family had healed some of its racialized wounds, but not all. Gurdev and Kailash have since left us and it pains me every time I think of them. And this is the warning of interfamilial anti-black racism. You lose time.
To those from mixed-race families, desi families with outcasted Black bloodlines, and the like, please remember - we have such little time. It is important that we honor each other and allow us all to be. As a Black and Punjabi person, I have had to prove my presence in so many spaces, answer too many questions, and provide way too much evidence. For many years I wore my kara as a badge of proof rather than a symbol of my infinite connection to God. I know how prevalent anti-black racism is amongst desi communities. This has made it hard to trust and enter with ease. However, I am also learning to let go of any need to prove or pronounce myself as a part of. I know who I am and where my bloodlines lie. And that knowing is enough to silence any cacophony of doubt. - Salma Vir, 2022

How Peter Virdee and The Virdee Foundation Reduce the Economic Burden for a State ?
The World Cancer Care Camps is not the first project supported by Professor Peter Virdee in Punjab. His previous projects include the latest during the Covid-19 pandemic, calling for “Oxygen for the Punjab”. The Virdee Foundation has promised 200 clinical oxygen concentrates and raised funds in collaboration with Khalsa Jatha Gurdwara for another 300 machines to be distributed to impromptu Punjab hospitals.

Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh (aged 9 and 7 years) along with Mata Gujri, mother of Guru Gobind Singh were imprisoned by the governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan. He offered them treasure and easy lives if they would only convert to Islam, but they refused and stuck their faith in Sikhism. They were entombed alive by being bricked into a wall on 26 December 1705, (13 poh) but the wall collapsed. This is Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, 5 km (3.1 mi) north of the Sirhind marks the site of their live entombment.
