Rewatch: Stargate (1994, dir. Roland Emmerich)

What to do when there's so many shows and movies on the to watch list? Revisit shows and movies I've seen many times before of course! Maybe I'm just in need of some comfort viewing right now.

I can't remember when I first saw Stargate. It certainly wasn't at the cinema, but probably rented from the video store (yes, I am an Old) and was certainly keyed to my preteen interests: mythology and Soft(TM) male protagonists.

Over the years and though several rewatches, online fandom, and my love of behind the scenes featurettes, director's commentaries, and retrospectives, I've also gleaned quite a bit of background tidbits and trivia, and I have many thoughts! Most of them through the lens of nostalgia, but that can't be helped.

Are you ready to go back to Titanic Stargate?

The much maligned Pharaoh's head, but it makes for a symbolic opening, trying to find the meaning to the different patterns before the whole picture becomes clear.

David Arnold's theme remains a banger. One of the GOATs.

I'm watching the Extended Edition/Director's Cut, which opens in the North African Desert 8000 BCE to depict Jaye Davidson being abducted, which is only seen in flashback in the theatrical cut. It's atmospheric, but it does tip the hand of the narrative a bit. The stronger opening is probably:

Giza, 1928, where the Stargate is unburied. Even this scene is extended, where the fossilized head of an Anubis is also found. It reveals the sinister undertone far too soon, imo, and it was the right choice to cut it.

Present Day! Love of my life Daniel Jackson ruins his career by arguing that the Egyptian pharaohs of the IVth Dynasty did not build the great pyramids. He does not claim (as the show later does) that aliens built the pyramids. Important distinction!

"Is there a lunch or something, that everybody...?" lol, James Spader is great. This was the first role I ever saw him in, and didn't realise this was actually playing against type a bit, but I have been a fan of his ever since.

Shoutout to Viceca Lindfors, who plays Catherine with steely grace.

Jack O'Neil (one L) aka Kurt Russell (two L's), in a great character introduction that is ruined by some voiceover exposition. We get everything we need to know from his scene without it, except that Tyler shot himself with Jack's gun, but honestly it would have been more impactful if that detail was held back from the audience and revealed in the later scene with Daniel.

The great Richard Kind everybody! He will later appear in an extremely tone deaf episode of Stargate: Atlantis, but here he's Dr Gary Michaels, aka the guy Daniel gets to show up by swanning in and correcting his translation.

Daniel: That's a curious word to use, isn't it? Michaels: ...Yeah

Rae Allen plays Barbara Shore - you may remember her as reporter Gloria Thorpe in Damn Yankees. It's a shame neither of these characters ever turned up in the show, I like them both.

"You must have used Budge, I don't know why they keep reprinting his books." LOL, Daniel with his petty academic grudges. Although as I understand this is a valid criticism, as Budge's translation methods were very much outdated by the 90's. But Budge conceivably could have been a contemporary of Catherine's father, which is interesting to think about.

Jack arrives with his haircut to correct Daniel's assumption that the hieroglyphs are 5000 years old - they're actually 10,000 years old, which Daniel ironically finds ludicrous. To pick some nits, according to the opening Ra arrived on Earth in 8000 BCE which is presumably where the 10,000 number came from, but doesn't take into account Ra establishing a culture and ruling on Earth for however long before the rebellion, which is when the coverstones would have been carved.

Leon Rippy plays the General West and his utter disdain for Daniel despite him solving "in fourteen days what they couldn't solve in two years" kind of gives me life. His surly "any time" and passing over the reference materials without looking at them is so great. Fantastic performance in a tiny role.

Several people are smoking in this scene, including Jack and Barbara. It's easily forgotten just how common casual smoking was back in the day - 1994 seems a little late for it to be so prevalent, but it gives the room that atmospheric haze.

Emmerich was also a big smoker, so ...

Unrealistic that Daniel would be presenting his theory without running it past Catherine and the team first, but hey it's a movie, dramatic effect and all that.

Important to note that Daniel's contribution isn't only realising that the symbols were star constellations, but the purpose of the symbols, being a map to determine a course. He also deduced that seven symbols were needed, realised that the seventh symbol below the cartouche not inside it, and then identified the seventh symbol on the gate itself.

This is a really nice illustration to Daniel's core strength - he's not just a repository of knowledge, he's a puzzle solver.

Some small character beats - Michaels questions Daniel twice, while Shore reaches out to pat Katherine's hand in victory when West orders Daniel be shown the Stargate. Again, they should have been brought back for the show!

There's a star map in the control room, implying that they had at least an idea that the Stargate was a transportation device, making the team look even more foolish for not figuring out (in two years!) that a) the symbols were star constellations, and b) that seven symbols (address + point of origin) were needed.

Daniel assures West that he can decipher the gate on the other side in a stunning display of hubris - a character flaw that will stay with him in some form through all ten seasons of the show.

Although West doesn't actually ask Daniel how he will make the Stargate work for the return trip, so that's kind of on him.

Jack correctly deduces that Daniel's full of shit, then goes to look at the Anubis head found in the Giza sequence. Again unnecessary inclusion imo, Jack's motivation works better as ambiguous at this point.

Everyone has their own little character moment before going through the gate - Jack grits his teeth and raises his gun, Brown looks back to the others, Porro kisses a St Christopher medallion.

Daniel toying with the event horizon was a Spader addition (much to the chagrin of the VFX supervisor!)

Foreshadowing for the Abydos point of origin symbol.

"That's a nice tent! Oh, we each get a tent, that's nice."

A snarky Ferretti (the great French Stewart) throws Daniel's suitcase at him, scattering his books on the sand. Daniel is completely nonplussed, starts to gather them up and then sits down to munch on a 5th Avenue bar. I love original recipe Daniel. Don't get me wrong, I love show Daniel too, but the OG, man, just 100% unbothered when antagonised.

Although to be fair, Ferretti's frustration is justified (if not his reaction) so that probably is a factor in Daniel's (lack of) response.

Daniel feeds a mastadge chocolate and gets dragged across the dunes and slobbered on for his trouble. But he doesn't hold a grudge, because he goes from "get away from me" to patting the creature on the snout in about three seconds.

Sha'uri, my beloved!

Important to note that while the other water-bearers keep their eyes downcast, Sha'uri is the only one bold enough to look up and make eye contact with Daniel, who smiles at her.

Daniel, in return, is the only one to say thank you.

She's also very wary of Daniel at this stage, here and on the walk back to Nagada - she laughs at Skaara and Nabeh taking his handkerchief, but tenses up when he looks her way. Does she know at this stage that he has been earmarked as her husband?

It makes me curious, because I don't think that it's ever explicit in the film that Sha'uri is Kasuf's daughter and Skaara's sister (although it's implied), but it makes sense that she is the daughter of the chief and would therefore make a high status offering (ugh I feel gross typing that) for an emissary of Ra.

We know that Ra surrounds himself with child slaves (the creepy implications of which I don't want to think about), and it's unclear how old Sha'uri is meant to be (Mili Avital was 22), but I wonder if the reason why she was not married already is that this was always the role intended for her - to serve Ra in some capacity, perhaps (in tv show timeline) as a host for one of his underlings.

If so, it makes her fate in the show even more tragic.

Brown takes a picture on their approach to Nagada which is a nice little character beat - I wonder where that camera ended up? Derek Webster also had bit parts in Devlin/Emmerich joints Independence Day and Godzilla, fwiw.

"Ferretti, say again." Great line reading from Russell - he gets flack for being humourless/not being Richard Dean Anderson, but I think he has great presence in the role and character at this point - RDA!O'Neill is the product of Russell!O'Neil's experience in this film.

A sandstorm approaches and in the extended sequence there's a miscommunication that Skaara (Alexis Cruz) defuses. I like this addition, as it gives more scope to the connection between Jack and Skaara - he sees that Jack is the one in charge, but also that he's willing to listen, and Jack sees that Skaara is brave enough to face a threat, but also clever enough to diffuse the situation.

"Well that would have been an excellent reason to shoot everyone." lol, and people say snarky!Daniel was a show-only thing.

Trying to learn the word that means "sandstorm" from Kasuf and the incredulous/frustrated little laugh after is a nice touch too.

Erick Avari steals every scene he is - he was also in Devlin/Emmerich's Independence Day ("what's with the golf balls?!?" was an ad-lib), and of course he's great in The Mummy ( the delivery of "Do you really want to know, or would you prefer to just shoot us?" is perfection.)

He was only 42 during this movie! Hasn't aged a day since.

A great deal of Kasuf came from Avari as well - the role was only a few lines in the script and was mostly developed during rehearsals - the same was true for Alexis Cruz as Skaara.

While "tastes like chicken" was in the script, the clucking like a chicken came from Spader.

Pivotal scene, because it really shows Sha'uri's courage - her fear is palpable, first at her duty to offer herself to Daniel then at what his rejection may mean for her and her people. She is confused by his behaviour, delighted when they are able to exchange names, but guarded again when he draws in the sand. At this point she doesn't know if he is an emissary of Ra testing her resolve, but she takes the chance and fixes his drawing to make the symbol from Earth, then takes him to the hidden catacombs.

Sha'uri's leap of faith here is underrated I feel - she's been watching Daniel so closely and makes a very correct judgement about his character - there is something in him that she recognises, and decides that she can trust. At this stage she probably knows that she is safe with him, but she wants to go beyond that and actually connect with him.

Also she's wearing red here, the same colour as Kasuf and some of the other elders wear, which does imply it's a colour of status.

LOL, this scene would never happen today.

This was almost cut from the movie! The studio's focus was on the action and wanted to eliminate a great deal of the character stuff, resulting in the film testing very poorly. Devlin/Emmerich redid the cut to put everything back in and (surprise surprise!) the next audience screening was much more favourable.

Because Jack's character arc doesn't work without this scene! We need to see Jack actually bond with Skaara, to gift him the lighter, be amused when Skaara mimics him and takes a drag of the cigarette, then for things to turn when Skaara innocently reaches for Jack's gun and he blows up.

"I guess the word dweeb doesn't mean anything to you guys, does it?"

Too good! Too pure for this world!

The hidden catacombs fascinates me - the entrance is blocked with rocks so she presumably Sha'uri hadn't been there for some time. Is it something she came across as a child? Was it secret information handed down through the generations, perhaps from her mother?

The symbol for Earth is only visible from inside so she must have explored the catacombs at some point, perhaps wondering what the paintings meant, and she must have been aware that at one point writing wasn't outlawed. I do like the idea that both Sha'uri and Daniel have this great curiosity and yearning to understand - they also share a great capacity for trust and willingness to take leaps of faith that makes them very well matched.

The backstory with Ra changed very late in the process - originally the Egyptian boy was merely appointed as a proxy for the alien creature to rule Earth, not possessed by the alien. This is unfathomable to me and really don't think it could have worked - where's the menace if Ra isn't the actual alien being but just some guy who works for him?

Presumably, it means Spader came back to do reshoots for the tale of Ra's origins, and if you notice he only mentions possession in a closeups where the lighting is slightly different. The frescos in the wide shots also don't match the closeups, which Emmerich himself did.

Brown is the one who gives Daniel a gun. RIP Brown.

Djimon Hounsou as Horus!

The Anubis/Horus/Ra disappearing headgear was one of the few noticeably CGI effects - most of the film was done practically and it shows (in a good way). I will take puppets and props and extras every day over CGI, there's just something more visceral about films made this way.

Daniel dies for the first - but certainly not the last - time.

The extended edition has Daniel walking through Ra's ship after being revived - there's a cat on Ra's throne, and we see more of Ra getting bathed and dressed by his child slaves just to notch up the creepiness.

Whatever happened to Jaye Davidson?

Apparently he had difficulty with the role, no doubt because as written it made no sense, which is why they had to change it in editing, adding the flanges and the glowing eyes.

Davidson was concerned he'd ruined the movie, and apparently was relieved rather than upset to see the final film. I actually think it's a great performance, and Ra really has a menace that feels genuinely dangerous.

The Abydonian langauge was based on Ancient Egyptian as developed by Egyptologist Dr Stuart Smith, and apparently great care was taken to make it as authentic as possible. I...don't think the same can be said for the show.

Dr Smith also consulted on The Mummy.

O'Neil, Kawalsky, Ferretti, and Guy Who Will Soon Die (Freeman).

Is is Kawalsky or Kawalski? The credits say Kawalsky, but his uniform at the beginning of the film says Kawalski. I personally prefer the latter.

The extended edition has an extra scene following the escape - Jack and Daniel jump on a mastadge which takes off and separates them from the group as Sha'uri and Skaara look on thinking "where are those idiots going?"

They get stuck in a sandstorm where Daniel collapses, and they're only found because the mastadge is so upset about his new friend he wails - this explains why Daniel is coughing and spluttering when they get to the cave.

Many a slash fic has started this way, I'm sure.

I really like Kawalski in this scene - "these kids don't have anywhere else to go" really hits me for some reason. He's bonded with them too.

"I don't want to die, your men don't want to die, and these people here don't want to die. It's a shame you're in such a hurry to."

The pivotal Jack and Daniel scene - this where the reveal about how Jack's son died should have been, so we find out when Daniel does. Then we'd think back on all the previous interactions - Jack knocking the gun from Skaara's hand, being unable to shoot the kids Ra uses as human shields - and be able to read new meaning into them.

A tender moment that I kind of wish they'd let play out a little more, although Avital captures Sha'uri's vulnerability so well. This was her first scene!

While I do love the Daniel/Sha'uri romance, I think she gets unfairly dismissed as just the love interest when she's so much more. Sha'uri is the one who starts the Abydonian rebellion - she's the one who decides that "we can no longer live as slaves" and rallies the boys to save Jack and his men - she's the one who passes on the knowledge of Ra's true identity.

At that point it's unclear if she thought Daniel is dead or just captured - her reaction following the massacre in Nagada perhaps implies the former. When Skaara tells her that Ra has called an execution she's been looking at the cave paintings, so clearly rebellion is already on her mind, and she's willing to go against everything she's been taught to try and save - maybe Daniel - but maybe only his friends, to help them overthrow Ra.

Interesting costume change for Kasuf here - he no longer has his outer robes or headdress, nor is he riding a mastadge - has he been stripped of his leadership role? Horus is now in charge.

Also nice little character beat - while the other have their guns pointed at Horus, Daniel is looking back at Sha'uri.

I do love Skaara's defiance - telling the others not to bow when Kasuf orders them to, and later he'll be the most reluctant to surrender, throwing down his gun in disgust before kneeling.

Sha'uri carries a gun into the pyramid, but I think it would have been better to at least see her try and shoot at the horus guard before she is killed.

Ostensibly this is a plot necessity to get Daniel up into the ship to give him a final faceoff with Ra and setup using the rings to deliver the bomb, but I think it's also needed for the Daniel/Sha'uri relationship - if he hadn't almost lost her and been willing to risk his life to save her, I don't think his choice to remain on Abydos with her at the end would have rung as true.

"I am no longer amused." idc, Davidson is great.

The first - but certainly not the last - time Daniel will get his brain friend by the hand device.

Ra's ultimate downfall is his hubris - if he'd never revived Daniel to make an example of him it's likely he never would have been overthrown, or at least not in the way he was. Yes he may still have had the public execution, and Sha'uri and Skaara may have still tried to rescue Jack and the others, but without Daniel to shoot his staff to set off the disturbance it may not have been successful. Jack wouldn't have been able to properly communicate with the Abydonians to form a plan, Daniel wouldn't be there to reveal Horus as a mortal not a god to Kasuf, etc.

It's interesting to me because as I said above hubris is also Daniel's main flaw, although it manifests differently, but that's what really draws me to these kind of characters - people who are a force for good but in such a way that their idealism and drive could easily tip over into ruthlessness/villainy in the right circumstances, and we definitely see this explored a few times in the show.

Also interesting is even though Kurt Russell gets top billing, it's really Daniel who is our protagonist - he's the one who is the true adversary to Ra, they share the relationship and confrontational scenes - Jack's antagonist is really Anubis.

Kasuf arrives with the uprising, and ultimately I do love that all three of our Abydonian family - Sha'uri, Skaara, and Kasuf - play a vital role in overthrowing Ra, even if Jack and Daniel get the credit for actually killing him.

We're meant to be la la la don't think about it re: the child slaves who were presumably still on Ra's ship when it blew up.

And I'm a sap! Skaara and the boys saluting Jack, and getting his salute in return always gets me.

Kawalsky and Ferretti too!

It's very important that Sha'uri is the one who instigates the kiss with Daniel, to balance the earlier scene where he kissed her.

Because it's a relationship that could very easily veer into problematic or feel unearned, but by this point having saved each other's lives, having communicated and bonded and come to understand one another, they do seem to be genuinely falling in love rather than there being any sense of obligation.

I think there might have been an alternate ending - on the bts there's footage of Daniel and Sha'uri walking with the Abydonians. Daniel looks back, presumably at the pyramid, as if reckoning with his decision to stay and a last look back at his life on Earth. Then he puts his arm around Sha'uri and they blend into the crowd as Daniel becomes part of the Abydonian people.

And then they both lived happily ever after and no one ever bothered them again! I choose to see the movie and the show as very similar but different universes/timelines, so hold true to my headcanon that this version of Daniel/Sha'uri got that long and happy life together on Abydos.

But as it is, we get our goodbyes - Skaara gets a handshake of respect from Jack, and Daniel gets some nice closure on his relationships with the three surviving members of the team:

Ferretti - goes from "Isn't there something you should be doing right now? Like getting us out of here?" (throws suitcase) to "I always knew you'd get us back"

Kawalski from - "You're a lying son of a bitch!" to "Thanks Daniel"

And Jack, from "He's full of shit" to "I'll be seeing you around...Doctor Jackson."

Of course this was setting up the sequel in the planned trilogy, but it works well moving on - as I will be - to the show.

Reform challenger Shawn Fain appears poised to win the presidency of the United Auto Workers. With more than 137,000 votes counted, Fain has a lead of 645 votes; the counting of the remaining challenged ballots will resume March 9. If Fain wins, challengers to the ruling caucus will hold not only the presidency but also a majority on the union’s international executive board. It’s a watershed after nearly 80 years of the Administration Caucus’s stranglehold on power — defined by corruption scandals, diminished bargaining power, and a multi-tier wage system that wrecked worker solidarity. UAW Members United ran on a platform of no corruption, no tiers, and no concessions.

One of the victorious challengers on the UAW Members United slate is Daniel Vicente, a machine operator and a convention delegate representing Local 644 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. After defeating Assistant Director Lauren Farrell with 52% in the runoff, he is now the incoming director of Region 9, which covers western and central New York, New Jersey and most of Pennsylvania. Luis Feliz Leon spoke with Vicente March 7 about the challenges and opportunities ahead and his vision to transform the UAW.

Luis Feliz Leon: Tell me a bit about yourself and how you first hired in with the union.

Daniel Vicente: I’m 33 years old, married with four kids. I’ve lived in Pennsylvania most of my life, except for when I was in the service. My father is a retired Communications Workers of America (CWA) worker out of Philadelphia; he worked for Bell Atlantic and then Verizon. My stepdad’s a retired Teamster truck driver for UPS, and my grandfather was a welder and belonged, I believe, to the Steelworkers.

I got into manufacturing after getting out of the Marine Corps. The transition to civilian life was tough, so I took whatever work I could get. I was a short order cook, a dishwasher, a line cook — all in unorganized shops, pulling like 70 hours a week, just trying to make $10 an hour so I can pay my bills. My wife was pregnant, and I needed to find more stable and better employment. So I applied with temp agencies, and they got me a job as a second shift assembler on an assembly line at the UAW plant. I knew that as long as you’re working 45 days, you’re entered onto the union seniority list. I just started applying for whatever job postings came up. My seniority and the lack of anybody else bidding on jobs allowed me to move up into better-paying machine operator jobs.

After she move to earth and knew Barry, Ethan and Amelia, She's always excited when her boyfriend, Barry with his 2 child or Barry's cousin, Stanley with his family invites her to travel to different places on earth. Plus she's gem, she can use general gem abilities like super strength as Quartz help can help lift heavy objects.

She liked and was very impressed with Barry. Which, she was impressed by his coolness and cuteness at the same time. Especially, his sense of humor and shyness. But what makes her love and admires him so much, is she loved sincerity to everyone, determined to what him do, responsible man and being a good father to his children. Which is what makes him so charming to her (after she live with him).

She love and care Barry's children, Ethan and Amelia as her children. She tried her best to support and take care of them, and she tries to be a good mom and be cool to them like Barry does. Sometimes, she learned something from them like Ethan taught her to drive a go-kart and other sports, and Amelia taught her to do water sports like water skiing and how to draw in basic way.

She like Barry's drawing much, she was always impressed when she saw him draw. Even, he only sketched when he was bored.

Born through surrogacy. The de Leons' consist of two fathers named Daniel and Tony, a older brother by the name of Amos, and the youngest girl, Armi.

Growing up, Armi was considered one of the boys, honestly. She enjoyed getting down and dirty. She got her hands dirty, and she played sports throughout her school years. She was genuinely known as the cool girl to be around.

She'd decide to go off to college in New York, at 19, thinking that that was what she was supposed to do.

While there, and dealing with trying to figure herself out, she'd end up meeting a man by the name of Sean Richards. Sean Richards was handsome, and through and through a privileged kid. From a rich family, on the upper East side of New York City. Armi would find herself swept away into some Cinderella love story.

Only that was not to be seen. The relationship was great, at first, but slowly and surely, Sean would turn Armi into the perfect Barbie doll. Imagine was everything to the Richards family.

For five years, she'd be exactly the kind of woman a rich family of doctors would want. A trophy on her boyfriend's arm.

She'd go to college for nursing, and would receive her degree, but the second she was out, Sean demanded she be a housewife. The degree was simply just for show.

They'd be engaged that year, and it wouldn't be until the day of the wedding when Armi finally said enough was enough. Calling off the wedding, and pissing off a well connected family. She'd return to Wilmington with her fathers and brother.

At 26, and freshly single, Armi would start to rebel. She got her first tattoo, her first piercing, she cut her hair, and even dyed it. The proper Armi de Leon that had been made out of clay was no longer, and in its place was a stronger woman.

One who refused to allow a man tell her what to do. She'd find herself interested in art, crafting herself in make-up, body paint, and SFX work. She'd also find that she enjoyed body piercings, which is what she'd decided for as a career.

Armi would remain in Wilmington, and own every part of her. She's a wild child at heart, but mad loyal.

-- AMOS DE LEON is 38 years old and is a wilmington native. he became a pro tennis player at 16 years old and since then put his career over anything else in his life. he was always a free spirit, often found himself either training or enjoying life to the fullest. he got married at 29 years old but divorced his husband two years later bc he always preferred his career over creating a family and whatnot. which leads us to present time amos. at his age, playing is nearly impossible and he is having to face the fact that without tennis, he doesn't really know who he is. his answer to this has been to have some sort of identity crisis where all he does is party, drink and act out. so he's pretty much a mess and work in progress and is currently trying to figure his entire life out again. personality-wise: very extroverted, incredibly loyal when he cares, will find an excuse to fight anyone, indecisive, mischievous, doesn't take a lot of things seriously.

biography

Born into a beautiful loving family, Amos De Leon saw and understood what real love and family was from a very young age. He witnessed his dads’ love and learned to be a big brother to his younger sister, Armi. The four were inseparable and incredibly lucky to have each other. Daniel and Tony always provided structure and warmth in their home, but by far, what shaped Amos into the man that he would eventually turn into was the way they always told their children to follow their dreams.

From a very young age, Amos was what most people would consider a prodigy. The boy lived and breathed tennis the moment that his hand met a racket and they never separated. He was up and training before school hours, and then after school. He’d always been ambitious but when he became old enough to join tournaments, that was when his fathers knew that there was no going back.

Despite his passion, Amos struggled with the discipline of a sport that always expected the best from its athletes. He was a free spirit just like his younger sister, and while his brain always wanted to win, his heart was more into running around, loving life, playing around town with his best friend, Kian. Instead of choosing one way though, by the time that he became a teenager, Amos had mastered his schedule and time like a pro. He was going to make it to the pros, no matter what.

His first sponsor signed him during his senior year of high school and when graduation came and went, Amos never looked back. From then on, his life became all about tournaments, opens, competitions. He would train in Wilmington, call it home, but would travel incredibly often for tennis-related things. If you ask him, this physical distance from his family is what ultimately made him begin to lose himself a little bit, because this is when Amos began to put the game above anything else, including love.

He was 29 and at the height of his career when he met Asher, the heir to a famous sports brand and who would eventually become his ex-husband. They’d always had a toxic relationship where they couldn’t find balance between Asher never having to work a day in his life and Amos always wanting to work and get better to be able to keep winning. For Amos, it was a struggle to find the time and effort to be a husband. As much as he loved Asher, he always found himself feeling like it wasn’t enough.

Marriage felt a lot like something that he needed to check off a list and not what he’d seen as he grew up with his fathers. So, it was a surprise to no one when Asher filed for divorce two years after their wedding, as by then, everyone knew that Amos had been seeing other people and had left their shared home with the excuse of needing to do what was best for his career and marriage, clearly, wasn’t it.

Amos never let himself miss his ex-husband, instead, he found himself at one of the best moments of his career. He won the U.S Open twice, then the Australian Open and eventually, and finally, Wimbledon. His life went back to what he’d always been: parties, hookups, drinks, women, men, fancy events, vacations, but he always found the time to fly back home. There was nothing like a hug from his dads, a beer with Kian and Armi, his own bed and he would not change that, not even for a longer career.

What Amos never took into consideration when he was younger was that sports careers are shorter than average, even if he was a top earner and competitor, at thirty-eight years old, Amos can’t keep up. In fact, most tennis players retire in their early thirties and he’s managed to add years into a career that has very quickly gone downhill. It was like right after winning Wimbledon, he could barely win anymore. Sponsors have slowly started to pull out of their contracts in the past five years and most recently, his coach announced that this will be his last season coaching him and as much as he likes to act like it’s not affecting him, it is.

What once had felt like his perfectly crafted life, Amos has begun to realize that is nothing but empty titles, trophies and a fame that will surely disappear when he stops playing and although he wants to fight it, he knows that in a year’s time, his life will not be the same. He can count the people that he cares for with one of his hands and can’t even put a name to most people that he has hooked up with, the realization hit him that he doesn’t want to be alone.

So, instead of trying to fix things, Amos has fallen into silent suffering and masking it with his usual repertoire of throwing parties, drinking and hooking up. When he’s not doing these things, he is lounging around the country club or his house, feeling incredibly sad but acting like he’s living his perfect almost retired life as he wraps up what will be his last season on the courts.

Growing up, it was just Parker and her older brother, Peter. Her father tried his best to be a good dad but his addiction to alcohol made it impossible for him to stay alert most of the time so Peter always took it upon himself to take care of her.

Peter and Parker were as thick as thieves the older she got. It was clear he was protective and someone who was willing to throw hands to anyone who even looked at her wrong.

Although, the reputation she got was one of making all the boys think she was easy when in fact she always thought relationships were overrated so sometimes she took what she wanted and would dump them the next day but let them think it was their idea.

There was only one boy who seemed to have her coming back for one was her on and off ex, the two of them were constantly fighting and breaking up yet their makes ups were so intense it was hard to want to break out of that cycle.

Every time they were off, she made it known she could move on at any point. She would purposely do things to piss him off so the make up was even more angry.

Recently, her dad got sick which caused her to move back in with him part time to help him keep the roof over his head and her brother left Marina Heights, not wanting to be around when their dad's addictions finally took him out.

Crimes That Shook Britain (West Midlands)

Murder of Charlene Ellis and Latisha Shakespeare Best mates Letisha Shakespeare, 17, and Charlene Ellis, 18, were shot as they left a party in Aston, Birmingham, in the early hours of 2 January 2003.

Charlene’s twin Sophie, their cousin Cheryl Shaw, and friend Leon Harris were injured by the burst from an illegal submachine gun, fired from a car. The teenagers were innocent victims of a bitter gangland feud between the Johnson Crew and Burger Bar Boys.

Charlene’s half-brother Marcus Ellis, 24, along with Michael Gregory, 23, Nathan Martin, 26, and Rodrigo Simms, 20 - all alleged members of the Burger Bar Boys - were convicted of the murders and jailed for life.

The Black Panther Donald Neilson was a burglar but, in 1967, moved on to armed robberies of post offices and - in 1974 - murder.

Within nine months, he’d shot dead sub-postmasters Donald Skepper, Derrek Astin and Sidney Grayland during almost identical robberies. The media dubbed the balaclava-wearing killer the ‘Black Panther’.

In January 1975, he kidnapped heiress Lesley Whittle, 17, in Shropshire, and demanded £50,000 ransom but never got the money. Lesley was found dead months later - hanged in a drainage shaft. Neilson was given four life sentences for the murders. He died in prison in 2011.

Monster of Worcester Friday, 13 April 1973 - the mutilated bodies of siblings Paul, 4, Dawn, 2, and Samantha Ralph, just 9 months, were found impaled on a neighbor's garden railings.

Police arrested the Ralph family's lodger, David McGreavy, then aged 21. The children's dad Clive had left McGreavy babysitting while he collected his wife, Dorothy from work. But when Samantha cried, McGreavy - who'd been drinking - flipped and battered her to death.

Next, he strangled Paul, then McGreavy then mutilated their bodies with a pickaxe, before impaling them. In June 1973, David McGreavy pleaded guilty to three murders and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 20 years.

He was controversially released on parole in December 2018.

Murder of Daniel Pelka Daniel Pelka, 4, was starved and beaten by his mother Magdalena Luczak, 29, and her boyfriend Mariusz Krezolek, 36, before he died in their Coventry home in March 2012.

Daniel was locked in a room, force-fed salt, and subjected to water torture. Krezolek broke Daniel's arm in 2011, but the couple claimed that he'd fallen off the sofa. Daniel weighed just 1st 9lb when he died.

Krezolek and Luczak blamed each other but were both convicted of Daniel's murder and jailed for life with a minimum 30-year term. A serious case review found there were missed opportunities to help little Daniel.

Social services had investigated in 2011 and teachers had raised concerns when the underweight child was caught stealing food and eating from bins. Luczak was found hanged in her cell in July 2015. Krezolek died of a heart attack in prison in 2016.

Tracie Andrews Lee Harvey, 25, was stabbed 42 times in his car on a quiet lane near Alvechurch, Worcestershire. His fiancée Tracie Andrews claimed a man had murdered Lee during a road-rage attack after a three-mile car chase.

Andrews sobbed during a press conference appealing for info, but it emerged that the couple had a volatile relationship, and Andrews could be violent. Police found the murder weapon hidden in the petrol tank of Lee's car and Andrews was charged with his murder.

Andrews claimed she acted in self-defense, but the court heard that she'd stabbed Lee after a row broke out in the car. She was convicted of murder and jailed for life. Andrews, was released in July 2011 after serving 14 years of her sentence.

Murder of Naomi Smith At 9:45 on 14 September 1995, Naomi Smith, 15, went to post a letter for her mum. Just before midnight, Naomi's father and her best friend found Naomi's half-naked body underneath the slide of a local playground a few hundred meters from her home in Ansley Common, Nuneaton.

Naomi had been sexually assaulted, her throat cut and body mutilated. DNA found on her body matched that of local man Edwin Hopkins, 19.

During his trial, it was revealed Hopkins had an obsession with knives. He was convicted of murdering Naomi during a frenzied attack and jailed for life. Hopkins maintained his innocence, but an application to review his minimum term in 2010 was declined.

2022 Annual List of Favorite Film & TV Experiences

Happy new year!

2022 brought back some semblance of normalcy. Highlights include: virtual Sundance Film Festival seeing 16 films in 4 days in January, my first in-person Super Bowl and seeing the LA Rams win in February, return after three year absence of my special fundraiser dinners that I cook (back-to-back nights of a 16 course dinner focused on Shanghai & Sichuan cuisine) in April, attending my 35th college reunion in May, helping to celebrate the life of dear friend and colleague Ted Walch at the end of summer, and in November, going on my first global travel since the pandemic on a work trip (postponed from March 2020) that took me to Sydney, Singapore, Jakarta, Tokyo, and Kyoto. And on the family front, we continued our weekly Sunday family Zooms which began at the outset of the pandemic, still going strong at 146 weeks and counting.

Best of the Year

Everything Everywhere All At Once

One of the trippiest film experiences ever! My first question after my initial viewing was "What drugs were the Daniels (as the directors are collectively known) on when they wrote this film? And what kind of pitch did they make to get it made? One of the most original, absurdly outlandish, and description-defying films in recent memory. What seemingly starts as a Chinese immigrant family drama centered around harried traditional mother (Michelle Yeoh), rebellious lesbian daughter, and sweet, endearing father (Ke Huy Quan of Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) quickly turns into a bonkers, multiverse journey to save the world. Along the way, laundromat owner Yeoh’s embattled audit brings her face-to-face with a delightfully droll Jamie Lee Curtis as meticulous IRS bureaucrat with hilarious interludes involving googly eyes, hot dog fingers, dildoes, butt plugs, and everything bagels. For those of you thoroughly confused, EEAAO does boil down to a story of redemption and reconciliation between mother and daughter and finding joy and meaning in the things that matter in our hectic, fractured daily lives…told in an absurdly funny and crazy way and gets even better after multiple viewings. Black Comedies Set on Islands…With Donkeys

Triangle of Sadness

This Cannes Palm d’Or winner intrigued me with its trailer which evoked a luxury yacht-based White Lotus-esque send up of the wealthy, but this dark dramedy threw a completely unexpected curveball, desert-island third-act that stuck with me long after I left the theater. There’s very sharp writing and performances—the verbal jousting over a dinner check, Woody Harrelson’s hilarious Marxist captain trading drunken barbs with a manure-selling Russian capitalist guest, and the ship’s Filipina toilet manager portrayed by a commanding Dolly De Leon who is largely responsible for the memorable third act. The film continues to grow on me with repeated viewing. FYI, this film is not safe for the emetophobic, as there is an overlong scene with projectile vomiting, the likes of which have not been seen since Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. The Banshees of Inisherin

Great to see the In Bruges duo of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson back together, this time as best friends whose friendship is abruptly cut short by one party which results in ever-increasing, devastating consequences in this bleak but humorous and deeply affecting black comedy from writer-director Martin McDonough. N.B. It seems to be quite the year for donkeys. I am excited but have yet to see EO, Poland’s Academy Award entry, about the adventures of a donkey named EO.

Pretentious Rich People Getting Their Comeuppance…On An Island

The Menu

As a fan of food, I really enjoyed this comically dark film with Ralph Fiennes playing to perfection the mad genius chef of the Hawthorn, a fictional restaurant on a remote Pacific Northwest island. With a fine ensemble cast directed by Mark Mylod (Succession) and with helping hands from the creator of Chef’s Table as well as the Michelin-starred chef Dominque Crenn, an exclusive $1,250 a head night at the Hawthorn turns into a twisted horror/satire of elevated food experiences and those who partake. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

While I thought this might go down the road of a #metoo or #cancelculture themed movie, this is actually a towering, slow-burn character study with an intense and sensational Cate Blanchett as the fictional Lydia Tár, the EGOT-winning, brilliant and demanding world-class conductor of the Berlin Symphony whose trail of manipulation, abusive behavior, and hubris eventually catches up with her and the resulting finale is…well, I’ll just leave that for you to watch and react. A sensational Austin Butler brings the King back to life on the big screen. Butler truly embodies Elvis in his heartfelt performance. Baz Luhrmann’s film is not so much traditional biopic as it is a musical that captures the spectacle and cultural phenomenon of Elvis, bringing America out of the innocence of the 1950s, as seen through the eyes of Elvis’s notorious manager Col. Tom Parker (Tom Hanks)—and Luhrmann does it in the grand, dazzling style that only he can do. Perhaps a bit garish and bombastic for some, as an unabashed Luhrmann fan, I loved it. Action Epics Based on Real Life Rebels

RRR

Wow. I was not expecting to be totally enthralled by S.S. Rajamouli’s Tollywood (Telugu language) film. Hands down, RRR (which stands for Rise Roar Revolt) will be the most glorious, hyperbolic, action-bromance-musical political epic spectacle you'll see all year. The laws of physics-defying action scenes are reminiscent of the operatic violence and stylized fight scenes of 300 and John Woo films. Taking place in 1920s British colonial India, the story centers on two men (loosely based on real life rebels), one a tribal warrior and the other an Indian policeman working for the British forces, who become friends, then enemies, and then eventually friends again and team up as Indian revolutionaries against the British Empire in action sequences that are just bonkers. And to top it all off, there are the exuberant Indians vs. Brits dance-off scene and the joyful credits dance number celebrating Indian freedom fighters (check out the extra links below). Yup. Jordan Peele has done it again, this time with a UFO pic that raises questions about our society’s fascination with spectacle, as well as obsession in the pursuit of the perfect shot. With stunning visuals (much of the film was shot on IMAX to create a totally immersive feel) and tingly suspense, Peele has created a film whose meaning you can debate all day—Erasure of Black and marginalized people from history? Bones and All

A film about cannibalism? Yup. I was intrigued with where the appeal in this would be. But seen as a metaphor for queerness and addiction, Luca Guadagnino has actually created a tasteful (pun intended) and surprisingly tender romantic cannibal road pic—a flesh-eating Bonnie and Clyde-like trek across Reagan-era middle America. Guadagnino superbly depicts outcasts living on the edge of society, searching for identity and place. Not for the faint of heart, as it does not shy from the gruesomeness of their addiction. Strong performances from Taylor Russell, Timothée Chalamet, and Mark Rylance with memorable cameos by Chloë Sevigny and an almost unrecognizable Michael Stuhlbarg. He's Kind and Friendly. He's sincere to everyone, especially his family and his cousins, Stanley and Stella.

He's bit outgoing, he know how to socialize a bit. Although, he has no social problems. But, he prefers to stay at home and spend more time with his kids or his hobbies. But mostly, he prefers to talk to his family and friends (Mostly, Stanley's friends). He isn't easily shy, but he's always nervous when April (Apple Aura Quartz) flirt to him.

He's diligent, responsible and focused. Especially, when he does his works. He's assertive, especially when he was determined to do anything. He will be determined and will not give up easily. But, he can be easy going when he finished his works or has a free time from his works.

He's calm, patient and mature than his cousin, Stanley. He's the one who warns and dissuades, when his cousin does something impatiently and without thinking.

He has sense of humor, he can make someone laugh as his 2 cousins, Stanley and Stella. But with his maturity and knowledge of the times, so he doesn't often do that, if the person is someone he doesn't know or is really close with.

He can be mad to someone, if someone really made him impatient. But whenever he accidentally got angry at them or someone reminded him, he felt guilty every time after he did it. Especially, He had been angry with Stanley and had not spoken to him for years. In regards to his cousin joining 'The Bullies Gang', until Stella reminded him until he realized. ever since that day, he felt guilty towards Stanley until now, and it made him became sensible and tries not to get angry at anyone, even his own children, Ethan and Amelia.

He don't like bullies and bullying much. Because in the past, He had been bullied before. Especially from the incident where he got his favorite sketchbook taken away by bullies. Then those bullies scribbled until they made a mess, made fun of him, and insulted him until half the book was left. He was very regret. It made him dislike bullies and bullying ever since.

He's love and care his 2 children, Ethan and Amelia much. He support take care and supports them in everything they like. He would always give them advice and teach them to be good person. He had no problem if they wanted to leave him to live on their own or wanted to be with him, as long as they can take care of themselves. Despite the fact that he wants his children to live with him for a long time. Which deep down, he felt alone if they moves to another place someday, but he respected their decisions.

He love drawing much when he was kid, it's his most fav. hobbies. He spends his free time drawing both to practice his skills and to relax. He always gives advice on how to draw for his students or his daughter, Amelia (who love drawing as him). He's good at traditional and digital art. Mostly, he like to draw portrait or illustration art about cartoon.

Although, on the outside he looked mature. But in fact, he still likes watching cartoons. Because, he has always thought and believed that cartoon can teach something at some point and not as absurd as others think. Which that cartoon, it was the main reason why he started learning and love to draw.

He like snooker, it's one of his fav. hobbies and his fav. sport when he was teenage from his father. Sometimes he likes to spend his free time playing snooker with Ethan (his son), Stanley (his cousin) and Arthur (his nephew).

He like cooking, he has some cooking skills. He learned cooking skills from his mother. Also, he know to cook some Chinese foods and desserts from cookbooks he bought or his wife used to teach him. In the past, he would only cook when he was free from work or drawing. Mostly, he's good at cook casserole dishes and pie. But after he lost his wife, he seriously began to cook than before in order to take care of his 2 children, Ethan and Amelia.

He interest in Chinese foods and Chinese culture before he met his wife, Susan. Because, his father took him to a party at his father's neighbor's house, who is Chinese, when he was teenage (at that time, that neighbor had just moved). It was the beginning of his interest in Chinese culture. After he married Susan, He learned about some Chinese food that he didn't know before. Later after he met and became friends with Stanley's friend, Leon and Ping, he learned some Chinese culture and learned a little bit Chinese language.

Dim Sum is his most fav. Chinese food. Because, Dim Sum was the first Chinese food he had eaten, when he first started eating Chinese food. Especially dumpling like Xiaolongbao, Har Gow and Shumai. For other his fav. Chinese foods, he like Tomato Egg Stir-fry (he learn how to cook this dish from his wife), BBQ Pork Bun and Wonton Soup.

For his fav. Chinese desserts, he love Nai Wong Bao (Chinese Custard Bun). It's most fav. Chinese dessert. Also, he like Glass Jelly, Tofu Pudding with Ginger Syrup and Ginger Milk Curd.

For his fav. foods, Pasta Casserole is his most fav. food, and he's good at cook this dish. Also, he like American Goulash, Eggs Benedict, Scrambled Eggs and Sandwich.

For his fav. desserts, he love Custard Bun much, It's his most fav. dessert (it's reason why he love Nai Wong Bao). Chocolate is his second fav. dessert, beside. Especially, Chocolate Ice Cream and Chocolate Cake. Honey is his third fav. dessert. Especially, he like honey with drink like Milk and some desserts like Pancake. Also, he like Banana Cake, it's one of his fav. desserts.

For his fav. drink, Milk is his fav. drink when he was kid. Especially, he love to drink milk with honey. Also, he like Lemonade.

Backstory

Barry Grant is Graphic Designer Teacher at University in the city where he was and raised. He's Stanley's Cousin, who live in the city not far from the city where he live. When he was kid, he and his cousin, Stanley are very close like real brothers. He often came to Stanley, when his father came to visit Stanley's father.

Until once day, when Barry was teenage and still in high school. He found that Stanley had joined "Bullies Gang" as a result of his cousin's confession, he was disappointed in him. He couldn't believe and understand why his cousin had joined them. Plus, his painful past when he was a child about bullies came back in his memory again. It made him feel too disappointed to listen to his cousin's reasoning. Ever since, he never spoke to Stanley again.

After Barry graduated university, He came to work as an art teacher at the elementary school near his house, where he was study as kid. Which he still lives in the city where he was born and raised until now.

4 years later, Barry met Susan Lin (She come from San Francisco. But, she move to the city where Barry live to work as Zoo Keeper at the zoo where Noppadon work. But at that time, Susan came to work as Zoo Keeper before Stella and Noppadon) at and fall in love her. 1 year later, he's married Susan. Then 1 year later, he and Susan has son is Ethan. Then, he and Susan has daughter is Amelia in 1 year later (at that time, Ethan was 1 year old).

Until 5 years later in once day, Barry came back to home after work, he saw Stanley's younger sister to visit to his house (He and Stella has still have a good relationship as one of his cousin. Although, he was still upset and didn't even want to talk or meet with Stanley at that time.) and look old album about Stanley, Barry, Stella sister and their family with his wife. He saw photos of himself and Stanley when they were kids, and when they were teenagers when they had a good relationship. Then, he upset and tried to walk somewhere else. It reminded him of the fractured relationship between him and his cousin in the past.

That moment was Stella's last straw, she gets tired, angry and starts to blame Barry for his prejudice towards his cousin from their past events. So she began to tell him about the incident about her brother. After that incident, Stanley felt guilty and blamed himself ever since. Plus, many events that happened to them and their families in the past. It made her see Stanley's change, she saw that her brother had mature than before. Stanley had always been care about Barry as a member of the family. Although, he knew full well that Barry had not forgiven him for that incident.

At that moment, it made Barry feel speechless and ashamed of himself. It was like he had hurt his cousin's heart who wanted to apologize to him all along. But, he would not forgive him for years, it made him a cruel person in his feeling. Which he realized, he never went to see his cousin, Stanley again after that incident. In the past, he tried to avoid meeting him every time his family visited. Even on a cousin's most important day like his graduation day, his wedding day with Angela, and the day he had Gabriella and Arthur, and he himself became an uncle. It made him lose many of the good times between him and his cousin over the years.

Before Stella returned home, Barry apologized to her for being upset at the time. Then, she apologized to him for being angry with him at that time. Then she told him, call her too If he's ready to apologize to Stanley, she's ready to help him.

Later that night, from what Stella told Barry about his cousin, Stanley back then, it made him unable to sleep most of the night. At the same time, his wife saw him like that and couldn't help but worry about him. Because she know that, he also felt guilty for his cousin, who he had ignored due to past events for years. His wife, Susan began to advise him that It was time for him to let go of the past and apologize to Stanley for the past. That moment, he realized that It was time for him to stop being prejudiced towards his cousin.

Few days later, Barry decided to go to Stanley's house in years to apologize to Stanley. Then, he and Stanley began to adjust their understanding and talk about the past. until their relationship began to improve respectively as expected by his wife, Susan and younger Stanley's sister, Stella.

Ever since that day, Barry visits his cousin, Stanley more often and takes his two children, Ethan and Amelia to visit his cousin's children, Gabriella and Arthur. He's more reasonable with his cousin. He and Stanley had a better relationship day by day as before. At that time, he became interested in digital painting. Then, he began to study about it and practice seriously for practicing new techniques in his drawings. Which he thinks that drawing this technique can be used in the future.

Until 6 years later in one day, Barry lost his wife, Susan from illness (at that time, Ethan was 11 years old, and Amelia was 10 years), which was the worst thing in his life. His cousin, Stanley was the first to come to him after hearing this news. At that moment, he realized that Stanley still cared about him and was by his side. He could see, that Stanley had matured. But still the same cousin he was familiar with when they were kids. But, he's still the same cousin he was familiar with when they were kids. Stanley made him stronger, and ready to work and take care of his two children, Ethan and Amelia in the best way on his own again.

Few years later, he decided to quit his elementary school teacher and has been working as a Graphic Design Teacher at university.

7 years later in one day, while ฺBarry was resting after work like every day. His cousin, Stanley called him to invite him to go to the Beach City. At that moment, he hesitated for a moment, because he hadn't finished checking the student's work yet. Then his cousin, Stanley told him to stop thinking about work for a while and relax himself. Then he realized, that his cousin was right. Because, he worked very hard after he lost his wife of 7 years for his 2 children, Ethan and Amelia. Plus he had promised his Ethan and Amelia, that he would take them on many trips together. But because of his work, he hasn't had a chance to go yet. Which he doesn't want to break his promise to them again. Then, he decided to agree with Stanley to go to the beach.

Later day, Barry went to Beach City with his 2 children and cousin. Stanley introduce Barry, Ethan and Amelia to know Steven and The Crystal Gems. He was a bit surprised, because he didn't expect his cousin to have a gem friends. Stanley explained about of them as one of his friend's family, Andy and how he met them (It was beginning Barry know about gem. Fact, Barry met and knew Andy and Stanley's friends months ago).

Few hours later, Barry explored around Beach City alone, while waiting for Stanley and his 2 children, Ethan and Amelia to buy donuts at Big Donut. He saw many gems live in this city, it made him wonder about them. While he was exploring the city, he met Apple Aura Quartz. He saw her walking up to him, and giving him a flirt look like she like him (At that time, Barry don't know, that Apple fall in love him first). At that moment, He became nervous and blushed, when he first saw her. He could see, that she was a very charming in his thought, He began to think that he was starting to fall in love all over again.

Meanwhile, Stanley and Barry's child, Ethan and Amelia came back to Barry with donuts. Stanley saw him with Apple (At that time, they still didn't know her), he can't stop smile after he see his cousin blush and nervous like that. Because he know, Barry isn't easily shy. While, Ethan and Amelia is very happy, after they know their father found someone. Barry was embarrassed, when they came to see him with Apple like that. But at the same time, he felt good that he found his new love again.
