cbcolympics: “There would have been a riot”
@brenda.irving.cbcsports recounts what it was like being in Pyeongchang in 2018 when @tessavirtue17 & Scott Moir won their gold medal
And @meaganduhamel has some very kind words about Scott’s leadership in attaining that team gold medal

Latch was the fd I originally wanted to embroider, but the photo intimidated me and I did Moulin Rouge instead (it’s somewhere here on my blog).
One year later, I think I did it right! ♥️
The details were a pain to embroider, but Tessa’s little hands, her flowy dress and VM’s skates were totally worth it. Oh, and the code works!
I also know that Scott’s necklace and Tessa’s ring are actually silver irl, but I wanted to honor the undefeated comeback with gold 😉

this week in skating podcast - olivia smart good interview - what stood out-
Jean-Luc Baker texted Olivia the day Adrian and Sara Hurtado split up their partnership to tell her to get in touch with Adrian - Olivia ended up coming to Montreal from Detroit for a week to do a tryout, stayed with Adrian and Madi and says they took good care of her, and when Adrian drove her to the airport, he asked her to team up by asking if she'd move to Montreal
in 2018 when they lost out to Hurtado/Khaliavin for Spain's spot at the PYC games, there was a judge caught cheating at one of the competitions that was deciding their fate, and they won at Nationals but still didn't get sent to PYC, so it was particularly hard
she tells the story again about how Patch told them he thought Mask of Zorro was cheesy but that he also had thought Moulin Rouge was cheesy for VM, but that they really believed in it and obviously made it work for them
the green Zorro dress rather than doing red or black was putting their twist on what was usually done. that immediately the response they got for their program was really positive
she does say she was blindsided by Adrian's retirement, but she asked him a couple times during the Olympic season whether he wanted to keep going after that season, and he answered each time that he wasn't sure, he didn't know. but she says that she eventually talked herself into believing that that meant he wasn't retiring. he picked a difficult moment to tell her he was done - just hours after they skated their FD in Beijing -
so starting in April 2022 was a hard time - when she and Adrian split, she lost someone she spent a lot of time with and gotten close to- says she's a strong person but that it crushed her to have things end, so she wants to tell her story so that other people going through that transition know it's normal. tried new things- coaching, circus shows, looked for a new partner but had a hard time, traveled to Panama alone, went to stay with family-- learned a lot
reached out to Christopher Dean - he told her she needed to find a new partner, to have as many tryouts as she could. and it was Mark Hanretty who recommended her for Dancing on Ice - turned out to be what she needed - to spend 6 months in the UK close to her family, her safe space
confirmed she and Tim Dieck have teamed up - still working out logistics of what country they'll represent. felt they clicked when they did a tryout and that they're both grateful for the opportunity to continue skating
the hosts mentioned that Solene and Marko said Olivia and Tim were supportive when Solene had her accident - Olivia says the other teams at IAM were in full training mode, she and Tim didn't want Marko to be there alone, felt it was necessary and that they'd do anything for their training mates and friends. They took turns with Patch being there while they waited for news, that Solene and Marko are the sweetest couple and remarkable people, and that they were some of the first ones she saw, along with Tim, when she came back to Montreal recently. That the experience brought her and Tim closer, that it was an important and special time, made them all closer.
the IAM family - Olivia has been there 8 years- something special with the coaches and skaters- they all get along- can't say there's a particular thing the coaches do to make the family environment happen- feels like it happened naturally for them all - the city of montreal helps, that it's a beautiful city with so much to do and that they like to do things as a group. the coaches open up to them as coaches and friends, but they don't push the students together. the coaches themselves are business partners but also friends. the higher team there are like that, it makes the students like that too, the environment on ice is light and positive, that it's welcoming. that they want to beat each other in competition but they want each other to do well also

VM anon here, you make a convincing case here but i wont be thinking of their faces and will look for fanarts instead while reading HAHAHA it makes me feel awkward. i love their moulin rouge to death but their entrance during their 2010 fd at the olympics where he pulled her closer and touched their foreheads lives in my mind rent free. also their practice during their sochi fd where they “accidentally” kissed bdowjsnosnsskak okay enough fangirling
Honestly, fair, it's tough to seperate for some ppl! But yes their 2010 free was really stunning!!! It's so crazy to watch how much they improved over so many olympics!! They're amazing 🤩 but don't get me started on Carmen.

Soooo.... Umbrellas FD for Hannah and Ye, how do we feel about this? Honestly I'm a bit puzzled by this choice, I'd have to see it, but I think they're too distinct of a team for this, I don't know. I guess it's important for them to stretch themselves early, but is this the right vehicle for it?
I personally hold off on all opinion and judgement until we actually see the program. I was hesitant and worried when Tessa and Scott announced they were doing Moulin Rouge, and look how that turned out.

Huh, I never really thought about it, but I agree that Yuzuru does have a huge cult following and even when there is a huge interest on him from other fans who are not usually into skating (like kpop fans for example), it usually is related to that main group of fans themselves. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, since he obviously has a bigger number of dedicated fans than other skaters combined, and it showed in the ticket sales, but I also do think that his reach is showing its limits. I do think Yuzuru's approach to pop culture is decidedly not tailored for western audience especially in his last active years, like for example VM did Moulin Rouge FD that got the attention of Baz Luhrmann himself while Yuzuru's last few memorable programs are the tinkly piano SP programs and Japanese-themed FS programs. It was funny to see his fans complaining that there were not enough Asian representation in the award wins because I think Yuzuru actually took some final nominations that I think other Asian skaters could have had and be deserving winners (the best costume nomination for his costume did a disservice to Satomi Ito tbh, she did many better costumes last season, and most entertaining program could have gone to Kanadai RD or Kazuki or Wakaba FS from Japan, or even Junhwan with his Olympic SP or Young for her fake-ending FS), and Yuzuru himself doesn't do a lot for Asian choreographer representation as he also used Canadian choreographers until the end of his career.
I think his popularity is truly limited to his cult fanbase, like I have a hard time imagining him doing his one man show in North America and selling out like he is in Japan or China (where he has some of the most insane fans we've seen). I can definitely see him being a selling point if he joins an existing show and many will be excited to watch him, but just him coming to a mid-size city in Canada? I don't really see it tbh. And that's not saying he is not popular inside his cult following because he very much is, but that cult following is not really about skating and does not translate into a positive influence on the sport in any way, shape, or form.
I think that while it's definitely not his responsibility, it is kind of disappointing to see that it feels like he cares very little about the world of figure skating outside of his fanbase and the money they generate. Which again, he has the right to monetize as much as possible, and his delusional fans will say that the ISU were so bad to him that they don't deserve anything. But can you imagine if he actually spoke up in favor of the future of Japanese skaters, or figure skating as a sport, calling out wrongdoings but trying to make a difference for the better? His cult fanbase listens to him and he knows that, it's just a shame that when he talks he will never call them out for being toxic and hurting the sport, but only rile them up with nonsense like his PCS dropping as if he is not aware of rule changes or him making mistakes in about 85% of the programs he performed last quad. It's one of the main reasons I just can never get behind him.
