Innit VS In’t - a PSA

I’ve seen some confusion in Hobie fics around the word “innit” and I think I’ve figured out why: aside from general confusion about the use of the word, I believe some people are occasionally mixing it up with “in’t”.

So let’s dive into it!

Innit - isn’t it

Can be used at the end of a sentence to make it a question or for emphasis.

E.g. “That’s a load of rubbish, innit?” Or “I’m Spider-Man, innit.” (The latter is an example of emphasis. It’s not grammatically correct but using slang isn’t always about being grammatically correct).

“Innit” can also be used in the middle and at the beginning of sentences (in place of “isn’t it”).

E.g. “Innit lovely out here?” Or “You told me that a Vulture variant was loose in Holborn, but innit true you’ve been tellin’ porkies?”

In’t - contraction of “isn’t”

You can use “in’t” in place of “isn’t”.

E.g. “In’t that the guy who was in here earlier?” Or “That’s a metaphor for capitalism, in’t it?” (You could also use “innit” in the second example).

It can be a bit confusing to a non-English ear to distinguish between “innit” and “in’t”, especially when they’re spoken quickly. For example: if you think you’re hearing someone say something like “Innit that right?” (which would be saying “Isn’t it that right?”, then you’re probably actually hearing them say “In’t that right?”

But wait!

Couldn’t you just use “ain’t” instead of “in’t”?

Sure!

“Ain’t” is a very versatile contraction. It can mean: am not, are not, is not, have not, has not, do not, does not and did not.

E.g. “I ain’t a liar!” Or “He ain’t done his homework.” Or “Ain’t that the truth.” Or “It ain’t right.”

Fun facts:

The earliest records of “ain’t” are from the 1700’s but it was popularised by Dickens’ representation of Cockney dialect.

“In’t” originates from Northern England.

So why use “in’t” instead of “ain’t”?

Personal preference, innit?

And there you have it, a dive into the world of “innit”, “in’t” and “ain’t”!

As always, I’m not an expert, I just wanted to share the knowledge that I do have. There may be other ways to use these words, depending on what part of the country you come from, but this should cover the vast majority of them (if not maybe all of them)! Hopefully someone will find this helpful, informative or entertaining at the very least. I know a lot of this seems basic, but there are a lot of non-native English speakers in the fandom so I wanted to cover all my bases.

I feel like all the brothers abilities are weird but the reason draxum doesn’t really mention it when he sees it is because well war machine they’re bound to have some weird abilities:

Leo:from how it seems portaling with swords is incredibly rare and the people he does it in front of are literally used to his shenanigans like portals in general seem like more well hard to create that cutting into the space time continuum and don’t get me STARTED on his ability to use his swords as a landing pad literally moving through air

Mikey:chains I guess are normal infact his are the most normal the problem is the fucking level DIMENSIONAL PORTALS ARE NOT MADE WITH YOUR HANDS YOU CANT JUST DO THAT YOUR 15 AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON FUTURE MIKEYS ABILITIES-

Raph:cloning seems normal till you realize just how fucked up that really is like illusions so real that they can FIGHT that is a whole other skill and his projections don’t feel common like I expect every yokai who sees it being incredibly confused

Donnie:his ability… is tech… literally just…tech HE MAKES NUKES WITH HIS ABILITY HIS MYSTIC IS GUNS WHAT THE FUCK

fic 2; this one was a single chapter iirc. hannibak got amnesia from a car crash and will was both pissed and worried. season 2 era i think. hannibal eventually regained his memories but slipped back into “perfect boyfriend” mode, which will realised he hated. he gets “murder boyfriend” hannibal back :)

Cockney Rhyming Slang Phrases Part 2

In a previous post I went into Cockney rhyming slang history and gave some tips on how to use it.

This is the second post in a series where I’ll give you some commonly used Cockney rhyming slang phrases, phrases that I find funny, as well as some phrases that I think would be useful for Spider-Verse fic writers specifically. Part 1 of this series can be found here.

So let’s get started on Part 2!

C-D

China Plate - Mate

E.g. “How are you, me old China?” Or “I’m meeting me old China at the pub later.”

Cobblers Awls - Balls

E.g. “Ooh! Got him right in the cobblers!”

It can also be used to mean “Nonsense”. E.g. “What a load of cobblers!” is another way of saying “What a load of nonsense!”

Cream Crackered - Knackered

E.g. “Sorry mate, I’m creamed!” Or “I’m cream crackered!”

Custard and Jelly - Telly (Television)

E.g. “Shh! I’m watching the custard.”

Daisy Roots - Boots

E.g. “Hang on, I need to put my daisies on!”

Dicky Bird - Word

E.g. “Not a dicky bird, mate.”

Another example of where you usually use the whole phrase. Also, “word” can also mean “a brief chat”. E.g. “Can I have a dicky bird?”

Dog and Bone - Phone

E.g. “You know what, give me a call on the old dog and bone and we’ll sort it out then.”

Duck and Dive - Skive

E.g. “Let’s duck!” Or “I gotta duck.”

Skive means to avoid work, usually by leaving early, similar to what Americans might call “playing hooky”.

Dustbin Lid - Kid

E.g. “How’s the dustbin lid?”

As mentioned in Part 1, it’s good to keep in mind that there can be multiple Cockney rhyming slang phrases for the same word, as well as multiple Cockney rhyming slang phrases that start with the same word. For more information, see Part 1.

As always, I’m not an expert; a true Cockney would know far more than I do. I just want to share the knowledge that I have. I hope someone will find this helpful, informative, or entertaining at the very least.

I’ve got more Cockney rhyming slang phrases coming, but if there’s any other areas of British slang you’d like me to go into, let me know and I’ll see what I can do!

Okay Guys I have a question :

Say that you're reading a fic, and then one of the characters speak in a foreign language. How would you prefer to... know the translation/meaning of it? (・∀・)

Would you like to know it immediately what It means (in brackets after the foreign language sentence is written), or not know it while reading, but then the author adds a note on the end of the fic?

Do you like it :

"Es bueno escuchar tu voz de nuevo, Jade" Alejandro said in relief. (So good to hear your voice again, Jade).

or...

"Es bueno escuchar tu voz de nuevo, Jade", Alejandro said in relief. --fic ends-- Author's Note : Es bueno escuchar tu voz de nuevo. Jade - So good to hear your voice again, Jade.

or...

"So good to hear your voice again, Jade" Alejandro spoke in Spanish with a tone of relief.

Or do you have another preferred way? Any replies/tips would mean a lot! Thank you so much!

We all greatly underestimate just how much a separated au would affect the family dynamics

No raph: Leo gains responsibility and cant always be jokey jokey anymore Mikey is most likely no longer as babied and is slightly more mature Donnie has less people holding him back, in conclusion they have less protection and stuff holding them back this will heavily affect every episode that deals with Leo’s insecurity of the lack of trust and will change the plot of the movie

No Mikey: they’d have no emotional help and probably would fight a lot raph would Baby the others with no Mikey causing a rift in their relationship like the one he had with Mikey Donnie and Leo would be even closer and a lot less mature being the youngest now with no emotional support/glue to keep the family together in times of need the rifts in the family would be a bigger deal this will not really affect their battles like no raph would but would still affect them, could affect the movie depending on who had Mikey and his relationship with his new brothers

No Leo:Donnie doesn’t have his twin (play with this all you want from minor to major) and raph doesn’t have his second in command because despite everything Leo was a second in command early on Mikey would lose a brother to hang out with and everyone would be in a lot more danger because a lot of the time Leo is the one pointing out who is trust worthy or not (ex: big mama hueso and he was suspicious of the purple dragons when Donnie joined them) so they would be in a lot of trouble in most situations without the plan maker and have a slightly more dull home life, would HEAVILY affect the movie considering how much was Leo development and depending on who had Leo could change nearly the entire story of the movie and shredder fight as well

No Donnie: leo doesn’t have his twin (play with this all you want from minor to major) this one affects them on a more physical level with the lack of tech in the house they wouldn’t get their first phone until maybe April and even then it would be one emergency phone if something broke it would have to be replaced because no one had the skills to fix it they wouldn’t have most modes of transportation and wouldn’t be able to track villains and now we bring back the fact they live in the sewers and just how fucked up their house would now be because Donnie is the one who installed air conditioning and the cleaning stuff and the one who built nearly everything in the kitchen and fixed the projector and the medbay stuff this would affect their fights as they would be missing key pieces to reaching the villains,this would affect the movie heavily especially considering who raised him and would affect the shredder fight too

I'm desperately looking for a fanfiction and I've tried everything and can't find it so I'm hoping someone will be able to help me

It's like an itch in my brain I can't scratch it's driving me INSANE

It's an AO3 fanfiction in the Batman fandom

It was about Jason Todd and Tim Drake

The bit I remember is that Jason asks Tom for help with translating something for him that's in an Asian language (I think mandarin) and Tim gets pissy about it and says that just because he's Asian (I think he says he's half Korean) doesn't mean he speaks every Asian language. Jason apolegies and says that it says on his bat computer file that he does speak that or that his nationality/heritage is wrong

Then later (or earlier? Idk some point in the same fic) there's an awkward conversation and Tim says for Jason to just call him a slur and get it over with (Tim think Jason is being transphobic) but Jason didn't know Tim was trans.

Tim thought this was like common knowledge but turns out it's not on his file either.

Find a Fic

I'm trying to find a Teen Wolf fic that i can remember many details of but not anything that might help me find it.

Details -set in a vaugely Stargate SG-1 world

-My memory says that the world is never explicitly called Stargate nor the setting or the base

-POV stiles who is a scientist at the base/facility where the stargate is located

-Lydia is his co research or at least works in the same lab space as him

-much of the fic is framed as quick sum ups of shenanigans that have gone down in the base

-Derek is a race of space wolf shifter and is first introduced in full wolf form

-stiles is the one who notices that Derek and his pack communicate with body language in wolf form when they first show up on the base

-scene near the end of the fic is stiles going with Derek to his home world for some kind of festival

-Derek's planet has like a million moons and there's a detail that names incorporate the moon into them
