Nobody Drives in LA -- The Los Angeles Grand Tour
Nobody Drives in LA — The Los Angeles Grand Tour
The Grand Tour, for the unfamiliar, was a custom that arose in Britain in the mid-1600s, which involved upper class young British men touring around Europe as part of their cultural education. By the 1800s, the custom had spread from the British upper classes to the nouveau riche of Europe, the Americas, and the Philippines. Although initially limited to men — accompanied by a chaperone and…

Gigi’s Bakery & Café,  2200 W Temple St, Los Angeles (Historic Filipinotown), CA 90026, Score: 34/50
Tumblr media
This popular Cuban bakery in Historic Filipinotown provides a lot of options (mostly Cuban, but some Mexican and Salvadorean). However, the baked goods in the case are not labeled or the prices are not shown (I suspect they’re reasonably priced).
Score: 34/50
Food: 4/5 – You can order salads, tamales, sandwiches (Cubano, media noche, ropa vieja), burgers, breakfast (eggs, omelettes, huevos rancheros), Cuban dishes, etc. The Cuban dishes seem to be the most popular. There’s also so many baked goods to choose from including square cake slices, fruit turnovers, crescents, giant muffins, big flat cookies, conchas, smaller cookies, cakes and cake slices, flan, cream puffs, fruit tarts, and more. Bolillos and baguettes are made fresh daily. They also have Cuban specialties like guava pie, potato balls, croquettes and empanadillas.
Coffee: 4/5 –They have espresso drinks. I asked for café con leche got a latte. Is it the same? Anyway, it was pretty good, not bitter
Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, the password is posted on the wall
Ambiance: 3/5 – Cozy and inviting, a lot of brown colors, like being in someone’s home. It looks scary from the outside though.
Noise: 4/5 – Quiet Cuban music
Plugs: 0/5 – Didn’t see any
Parking: 5/5 – They have their own parking lot
Comfort: 3/5 – Small dining area with different size tables.
Bathroom: 3/5 – They’re outside. I was afraid to go inside.
Art: 3/5 – One old framed illustration that said visit Cuba
Tips: Order first, then grab a table. Bus your own table. Delivery and online ordering available.

Gigi’s Bakery & Café,  2200 W Temple St, Los Angeles (Historic Filipinotown), CA 90026
Tumblr media
This popular Cuban bakery in Historic Filipinotown provides a lot of options (mostly Cuban, but some Mexican and Salvadorean). However, the baked goods in the case are not labeled or the prices are not shown (I suspect they’re reasonably priced). A lot of the baked goods look like Mexican pan dulce. I spotted square cake slices, fruit turnovers, crescents, giant muffins, big flat cookies, conchas, smaller cookies, cakes and cake slices, flan, cream puffs, fruit tarts, and more. Bolillos and baguettes are made fresh daily. They also have Cuban specialties like guava pie, potato balls, croquettes and empanadillas.
Then there’s the menu – you can order salads, tamales, sandwiches (Cubano, media noche, ropa vieja), burgers, breakfast (eggs, omelettes, huevos rancheros), Cuban dishes, coffee (including Cuban coffee) and espresso drinks.
Papa rellena/potato ball ($1.85): round balls of mashed potato covered in crispy crumbs with a filling of seasoned ground beef – yum, more flavorful than Porto’s
Empanadilla de pollo/chicken turnover ($2.39): Not bad, a lot of crust (like pot pie crust but fried) and a decent amount of filling, chicken was shredded and in a light sauce
Cuernitos ($1.35): pretty dry, not much flavor
Latte ($4.25): asked for café con leche got a latte. Is it the same? Anyway, it was pretty good, not bitter
Parking is tough in the area but Gigi’s has its own parking in the back. Enter/exit slowly because cars enter/exit the same way and there isn’t any room for two cars to pass side by side. Finding a table might be tough too because it’s a popular place and there aren’t many tables. Order first and then grab table., When you’re done, bus your own table. Free wi-fi available.

FebruarOC - Quin
My other brand new character, along with Horatio, created with the express purpose of having some pining fae prince + bodyguard content. However I know even less about Quin than I do about Horatio. The problem with creating characters 1) out of spite 2) just to play around with in a sandbox is that it makes it real hard to force yourself to sit down and figure something out. At least for me -- there's less of a motivation since it's not for anything except my own amusement.
SO! Let's uh, make some stuff up I guess!
The most important thing to make up is: HOW DID THEY MEET and WHY IS THEY LIKE THIS?
Easiest answer is that like, Quin's family is just one of the vassals of the seelie king, and Quin got the lucky job of being assigned as bodyguard to the prince. (What does being a vassal of the seelie king based out of LA mean? are you in charge of like, San Fernando Valley? Do the dukes of Fashion District, Flower District, and Jewelry district all duke (🥁) it out because their neighborhoods are so close together and bleed into one another??? Are Chinatown, Little Tokyo, KTown, Historic Filipinotown etc etc run by delegates of their own respective countries? Or is it done based on lines of governmental districts?? oh bOY) SO MAYBE NOT A VASSAL, that's too loaded a question for me to figure out.
Quin's parents working as part of the king's court. Okay, easy.
So what is it that makes Quin get picked? There's the possibility that there was like, a contest and he won? Or it was used as a punishment for his parents? It could even have been a punishment for Quin, if I want to rip the bodyguard plot from my SignetEcho fic LMAO He was caught doing A Crime and was given the opportunity to do fae jail time or serve as the prince's bodyguard? Either of those two brings in tension -- though I think that his parents being punished is the better option because it can bring on the difficulties of Quin having been lied to about the reason is there and blaming Horatio -- even if Horatio was unaware. We'll go with that!
Quin, under the impression that he was chosen for idk like good grades and and performance at school or whatever the fuck the other kids in his generation were doing, was assigned to be the prince's bodyguard in secret punishment to his parents by sending away their eldest son for something they did. I'll figure that out later, it's not important right now.
I think generally, he does enjoy working with Horatio, even if sometimes the prince (and the political scene in general) can be exasperating.
His drabble is also part of OC Kiss Week, so you'll find that in a separate post!
PS: full disclosure, when i'm plotting his relationship with Horatio, I may or may not be rotating this post in my head at WARP SPEED.

Thunderbolt .
Thunderbolt is a neighborhood cocktail bar with great food, located at the intersections of Historic Filipinotown, Echo Park, and DTLA. We are inspired by the American South, and you’ll notice it from the smiles that greet you, to the countless bottles of Madeira on the backbar.

@rogueimprovla: “Art is the heart's explosion on the world. Music. Dance. Poetry. Art on cars, on walls, on our skin. There is probably no more powerful force for change in this uncertain and crisis-ridden world than young people and their art. It is the consciousness of the world breaking away from the strangle grip of an archaic social order." -Luis J. Rodriguez, Poet/Journalist Break away & create art that matters this Saturday, 9/24 on Zoom or in-person in Filipinotown with Rogue Leaders Mirage Thrams (Second City, Blackverse) and Michael Sielaff (Laughtivism, WASP)! This artivism (art + activism) workshop will take place from 2-5pm in Michael Sielaff's apartment in Filipinotown. Please RSVP for the address. Bring snacks to share! We will also set up Zoom so if you can't make it in-person, you can still participate. Here's what's up: Mirage and Michael will start with an introduction to social conscious art- what it looks like, its impact locally, nationally and internationally, and showcase a variety of mediums to create it. Then we'll shift gears and brainstorm ideas and passion-points to create the beginnings of your very own artivism project. We'll be using improv, storytelling, tableau, news articles, and writing exercises as a catalyst for your art (i.e. sketch comedy, poetry, improv, storytelling, drawings/paintings, music) to spread awareness and encourage action about social issues* you're passionate about. *Social issues can include but are not exclusive to political commentary. As "social" being the focal point, we will be exploring what changes you'd like to see in the interaction between people. Examples: Assumptions/advantages based on race, gender, age, ability; jealousy; ego; image obsession; status; language barriers. Ultimately: How can we treat each other better? BYE I was reading about Historic Filipinotown in California and they were like "at the restaurants here you order by pointing at the food you want, known as turo-turo" you mean I have been ordering food wrong in the states this whole time? You don't just point shit out, you as a customer are just supposed to know the whole damn menu?
