Buddie 612 meta

I don’t think we’ve had this much fodder with such few scenes in a long time, and I am LIVING!

Okay, so first of all I have to mention the parallel between 217, when the team was coming in, one by one, to see the suspended Bobby, and this ep, with everyone dropping by one at a time to be there for the recovering Buck. The similarity is of course in the found family connection. In both cases we see the importance of the absent member of the team through these visits. The difference is in the way the team came to Bobby because they need him to be there for them as their captain and friend even when he’s not on the job. But in Buck’s case, they don’t need anything. They’re coming by because they want to be there for him when he needs his team members and friends. Buck’s parents needed a reason to love him. Buck’s found family in this ep is loving him anyway. ~~

I’m gonna scream about the couch in a second, but I have to admit that while I was watching the ep, the moment that REALLY had my eyes shoot wide open and my breaths go into hyperventilation is when Maddie reads the note saying Buck has gone out. Because as soon as it was made clear Buck had chosen to escape his apartment and all of his visitors, I knew where he was headed. First off, the very fact that everyone else came to him, while Eddie was the one person Buck chose to go to already had me biting my fists. Once more, like in so many other cases (for example, when the lightning hit and Eddie was filmed differently to everyone else in the 118, or the way he was the only absent person in Buck’s dream and the only one Buck remembered without needing a physical object to jog his memory), Eddie is singled out as having a unique space in Buck’s life that no one else occupies. And of course there is this domestic quality and element of choosing each other as we see them repeatedly opening the door for and to get to the other one. ~~

But just think of the meaning! This man puppy, who only ever wanted to be loved and who’s being showered with attention and care, is absolutely restless because he’s having a hard time and feels like he has to pretend with the people he loves the most, and therefore he’s failing to fall asleep on his own couch. He seeks comfort in a connection that’s even deeper than the people who have been to see him, where he can really be himself without pretense. And that’s what’s insane, because he was visited among others by Maddie and Hen, his loving blood and adoptive big sisters. NO ONE can claim that his r/s with them is anything other than deep, and yet when he needed something more, when he needed an escape, when he needed a place where he could simply rest and be himself, he went to Eddie’s. This isn’t just Buck standing in Eddie’s kitchen declaring, “I’m not really a guest” in 311. This is him being more of a guest in his own apartment than in Eddie’s house. This is him being home and safe and able to JUST BE in Eddie’s space.

This is Buck beginning his healing by sleeping on the SAME couch where Eddie did in 514, connecting their healing in a parallel that is going to make me tear my own hair out. Which actually connects us back to 407, when Buddie talk about Buck’s need for his loft to be his safe space. Now it’s canon that this desired safe space is Eddie’s home, and I will chew through every piece of glass out there before I calm down from this. Once again, there are opposite sex canon couples on TV who never get this level of soulmate development! ~~

Oh, I also found it very interesting that Buck tells Maddie about his list he goes through every time he wakes up, to make sure he’s not in the coma world. We didn’t see him going through those steps when he woke up on Eddie’s couch. Remember how I said Eddie had to be absent in the dream world or Buck might not have made it out of there? Well, this ep adds to that. By virtue of being the only one who’s fully absent, it means Eddie is the one person whose very presence is a cue for Buck that he’s in the real world and safe, the only one who, by simply being there, negates the need for a list. I AM MELTING. (my gif, please excuse the awfulness) ~~

Speaking of soulmates bonding, I have to point out the opposite sex soulmates we do have in this very ep. Bobby confesses that Athena is it for him because she makes him feel like he’s standing on solid ground, she helps him be himself by finding again a piece of him.

We also see her becoming a part of his healing process when he allows her to come to his AA meeting. This is exactly what we see Buddie going through in 612! Eddie is Buck’s solid ground, the person he can count on and who can provide him with rest (that’s what solid ground represents), who allows him to simply be himself, and Eddie is also a part of the healing process that Buck allows him into by seeking out Eddie, and by opening up to him when Eddie asks him to, after finally getting some rest on the couch... ~~

That brings me to the couch because that in itself is just... Wow, this show really hates my nails and wants me to chew on them fully, I see how it is. Let’s not forget for how long the couch metaphor has been with us! Once Taylor and Buck discussed their couches situation when she was moving in with him in 513, and it was clear there was an incompatibility issue because she was bringing in a couch while he already had one (meaning they had already failed to communicate about this pretty basic point), it was clear they’d have to choose only one and dispose of the other. Very tellingly Taylor doesn’t really leave room for choice, so Buck (who only asked her to move in out of guilt) gave up his for hers. That’s the start of the couch being a metaphor for his romantic relationships, and I can’t believe it started a whole season before this ep! And then when Taylor moved out in 518, he was left with none? But that wasn’t unhinged enough for our show, so they brought it into an even greater focus with the lasagna scene in 601, when it was made even clearer that the “right couch” for Buck is about his romantic partner, that he’s aware of that significance, and that he admitted to it IN EDDIE’S PRESENCE. I can’t believe Buck fell asleep like that on Eddie’s couch, when they BOTH KNOW what the couch means. This is the most naked two men have ever been with each other on a TV show without taking their clothes off! Then Buck’s parents get him a couch he doesn’t want, one that’s all wrong for him, one he didn’t get to CHOOSE, so unsurprisingly he can’t sleep on it. That would have been a lot already, but then this ep turns around and SLAMS US IN THE FACE with Eddie’s couch being the right one for Buck to fall asleep on and to do so effortlessly! Two seconds on it, and Buck was out. That’s okay, 911, I just have to work a double shift while I’m sick today, I didn’t need to also have my sanity. You absolutely can have everything left of it. (my gif, please excuse it) ~~

I know it’ll sound dumb, but I was happy crying over the beers in Eddie’s fridge and the zoomed in shot we got of them. Look, it’s their thing, right? We’ve seen the two of them sipping on beers together in the iconic 309 kitchen scene (NGL, the oral sex scene in my Blue Against Blue fic was inspired by this), and it’s been a repeated theme, so when I saw Eddie had no less than 6 beers easily accessible in the top shelf of his fridge, chilling away, it screamed “This is my Buck stash” to me.

I will forever be a mess that Eddie Diaz, tough war veteran, actually has a supply of beers ready in his fridge for whenever soft man puppy Evan Buckley drops by unannounced. Can you imagine when Eddie goes grocery shopping and he probably smiles softly to himself when he buys his Buck beers? These two are so domestic and in love and equally soft about each other, it’s gross. And by gross I mean I love it, please gimme more. ~~

Oh, but the domesticity just keeps leveling up in this ep! Because then Buck wakes up and makes his way to the kitchen, where he just… lets Eddie take care of him by serving water. And it’s so tender and husbandy, and affectionate, and connects so perfectly to Eddie asking Buck to share with him. Because Buck wouldn’t let others fuss over him, but he lets his hubby take care of him. And he doesn’t tell others, even ones who are significant people in his life, where he’s really at, but he will share everything with Eddie. Not to mention that it doesn’t take much to get him to open up. All Eddie has to do is ask, and despite Buck’s initial announcement not to, he just goes right ahead and spills. I am inhaling and exhaling into the palms of my hands.

Of course, tucked in there is also Buck asking Eddie about the shooting. We all remember Buddie holding eye contact through that and Eddie reaching out to him, right? Or everything that transpired between them in the ambulance, all of it so romantically coded... This scene tells us that Eddie doesn’t remember those bits. I find it interesting to consider that maybe Eddie really doesn’t. That maybe the reason he hasn’t figured out yet how he feels for Buck is because he blanked out on the way he turned to Buck during the most intense moments of his life, and the ones he thought were his last. ~~

I mentioned during the hiatus in replies to asks I got that I suspected just like the distance between Buddie in 5a served to bring them closer together in 5b as Buck helped Eddie with his healing, the same structure was being followed in s6, just in the reverse, where Eddie will eventually help Buck. You can’t imagine how deep and meaningful I find it, that the show has actually structured these two seasons as counter paralleling each other, and showing Buddie as being a vital part of this mutual healing, so I tried to demonstrate that with this gifset. ~~

Last one! The cardiologist. Look, I already mentioned in my previous weekly meta that the heart theme started with Eddie, and then it was expanded to Buck. I find it insane that the show really hammered it home by having the same cardiologist be the doctor for both men, and that while she’s at it, she hints to both that their issues are not purely physical. How long before the metaphor-loving Buck catches on? IDK, but every single choice about this ep feels incredibly deliberate, when so much is condensed into so few scenes.

Oiii, booklovers!

Se vcs têm filhos/sobrinhos/irmãos...enfim, ✨crianças✨ e querem que elas tenham o hábito da leitura, mas não sabe por onde começar, vc veio ao post certo!

Primeiramente, esse texto não tem como objetivo dar dicas sobre como fazer sua criança ler, mas espero que você tenha sucesso, afinal, a leitura traz vários benefícios e é muito importante para os pequenos - ajudam a melhorar a fala, a escrita e, é claro, a imaginação :)

♦️| Alice no País das Maravilhas (+6)

~ edição da Ciranda Cultural ~

Alice tem uma pegada mais "poética" e não entendi muita coisa das duas vezes que li - a primeira com 12 anos e a segunda com 15 -, mas é fato que o País das Maravilhas é um lugar bem presente na nossa imaginação.

A história, todos já conhecemos: uma garotinha, chamada Alice, cai na toca do coelho e vai parar no País das Maravilhas.

👒| Pollyanna (+9)

A edição que li de Pollyanna tem uma linguagem um pouco mais complicada, mas pela idade, suponho que as crianças devam entender - e, qualquer coisa, serve pra aprender palavras novas.

Pollyanna é uma menina órfã que vai morar com sua amarga tia Polly e acaba contagiando todos da vizinhança com sua felicidade e o "jogo do contente".

Tem também o segundo volume, Pollyanna Moça.

❄️| O Príncipe Congelado (+9)

Esse aqui eu enrolei a resenha por tanto tempo q resolvi nem fazer mais 🤡👍🏻

Mas enfim, é estilo "conto de fadas" envolvendo um garoto frio como gelo (ou seja, o príncipe que dá título ao livro) e uma princesa de fogo bem louca da vida. Enfim, os dois têm tudo a ver com a forma deles em aparência e personalidade.

💫| O Pequeno Príncipe (+9)

Esse aqui é o clássico dos clássicos. É tipo uma tradição de iniciação literária: todo leitor precisa ler esse livro.

Em resumo, um principezinho de outro "planeta" (asteróide B-612, pra ser mais exata) que já passou por vááários lugares no universo, vem parar na Terra, onde encontra um aviador - entre outras coisinhas...

🍫| O Dia em que Minha Vida Mudou (+9)

Esse aqui, eu não daria "+9", mas foi o que tava na classificação. Na verdade, eu acho que se encaixa mais numa faixa de 10-12 anos, pq os personagens tão passando do 5° ano pro 6° - e tem toda aquela coisa de pré-adolescência, namoro, celulares, amizades...sabe, o sexto ano.

🪐| O Diabo dos Números (+9)

Eu tbm n daria "+9" pq aborda assuntos de matemática q a gnt vê mais no 6° ano. É um livro sobre matemática, mas bem tranquilo e divertido, com ilustrações e tudo mais - foi um dos meus preferidinhos na época kkkkkkkk amo esse livro!

Super indico ele e A Vizinha Antipática que Sabia Matemática pra qm não curte muito a matéria - inclusive esse segundo tem mais cara de 9/10 anos, pq é a parte mais "inicial" da matemática, é curtinho e um pouco superficial.

🧑🏼‍🚀| Extraordinário (+10)

Extraordinário é extraordinário kkkkkkkk

Esse livro fala sobre o bullying - nada muito pesado, mas pra quem sofre, é óbvio que qualquer coisa, por "menor" que seja, machuca - que Auggie sofre por não ser um menino de dez anos normal. O livro não conta só com o pov dele mas tbm com o da Via (irmã), Jack Will e outros personagens.

Pra quem quiser conhecer mais a história antes de comprar o livro, aconselho assistir ao filme, que tem o mesmo nome e é uma adaptação bastante fiel.

🍁| Anne de Green Gables (+11)

~ edição da Ciranda Cultural ~

Se vc veio aqui achando que a saga Anne tem algo a ver com Anne With an E, pode tirar o cavalinho da chuva, pq uma boa parte da série veio direto da cabeça dos produtores - e, por incrível que pareça, a história ficou muito melhor.

Anne é quase a mesma coisa de Pollyanna, só que ao invés de uma loirinha otimista, aqui temos uma ruivinha teimosa. E, diferente da Pollyanna, a Lucy Maud fez praticamente um "esquema de pirâmide", pq a saga tem uns oito livros e os extras.

Sinceramente, parecia que todo personagem que eu gostava precisava morrer (ou sumir da história) logo em seguida - e eu nem me apeguei a tanta gente.

• É claro que, se você quiser algo mais "curto e simples" pra seus pequenos começarem, opte por Pollyanna, O Pequeno Príncipe, Alice no País das Maravilhas, O Príncipe Congelado e O Dia em que Minha Vida Mudou, pois os outros têm mais páginas.

• Especifiquei as edições da Ciranda Cultural pq eles fazem livros mais voltados para crianças, talvez tenha uma linguagem mais acessível do que outras edições.

"You're the smartest person I know."

original fiction

“You ready?”

Josie straightened up, attempted to straighten out her messy curls. Though Rhiannon’s finger hovered above the record button on her voice memo app, she could appreciate the effort. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”

She pressed the button. “Josie Penn, can you introduce yourself?”

“Hi. My name’s Josie Penn. I’m 25, a Scorpio-”

Rhiannon cleared her throat.

Josie merely grinned, before she continued, “And I’m a werewolf."

She checked her notebook, making sure she didn’t skip over a question. “When did you first become a werewolf?”

“The attack or my transformation?”

“The attack,” she clarified. At least she hadn’t brought up the laptop thing, not yet.

Josie glanced down in her lap, messing with the hem of her sweatshirt. “I was foraging for mushrooms during the last full moon with a friend. We got separated when this creature grabbed me and we sorta wrestled for a second. I won, obviously, but it left me scratched up before it got away. My friend bandaged me and I thought I’d be okay.” She chuckled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I wasn’t.”

Rhiannon paused the recording. “Do you need a second?”

“No, I’m good,” Josie said. “It’s just harder thinking about it than I thought.”

“Yeah, I get it,” she muttered. “We can just stop. I mean, you just learned you were a werewolf yesterday. It was stupid to rush into this so soon.”

She reached over to slide her phone back, but Josie grabbed her wrist. Her amber eyes bored into her as she said, “I don’t think it’s stupid. You’re the smartest person I know.”

“Just because I’m smart doesn’t exempt me from bad ideas,” Rhiannon pointed out.

“Listen, I’m just glad I can help you prove stuff like werewolves are real,” she said, letting go of her wrist. “Hell, maybe we’ll become a cryptozoologist duo and we can find Bigfoot.”

She chuckled. “Maybe when I finish my Master’s.” She didn’t think it was worth mentioning that she would only believe Bigfoot was real when she came home to him watching Netflix in their living room.

“So, are you going to bail on me?” Josie asked.

“No,” Rhiannon said with a smile.

“Okay. Let me just-” She took a deep breath. “Fire away, Rhi.”

She pressed the button on her app. “Did you have any idea something was wrong after that night?”

“Not really. Not until it got closer to the full moon. I just felt… weird. Like, maybe it’s a weird metaphor, but it was a mix of PMS and that one movie about the cannibal girl. Raw?”

The gears were turning in her head as she tried to put it in more scientific terms. “So… mood swings, irritability?”

“Yeah. Plus a craving for meat. Not necessarily human, but I’ve been trying to cut down on meat and doing a pretty job at it. Until this week and I went all Rosemary’s Baby.”

Rhiannon briefly wondered if she’d have to reference the films Josie were dropping if she wrote a paper about her research.

“Any physical sensations?”

“I had a really bad headache the day of the full moon. That was it.”

“Do you feel ready to talk about the transformation?”

Josie was quiet for a moment. “I don’t think so. No. Not today.”

“Okay. Then that’s all the questions I have for now.” Rhiannon stopped the recording. “That’s a good start.”

“Alright.” She stood up. “I’m gonna go take a nap, if you need me.”

“No problem.” As she watched Josie walk away, she scooped up her phone. Rhiannon was a woman of very few regrets, but she still couldn’t help being doubtful of how this would turn out.

Every time I see this GIFF, in my head I hear Eddie going wah wah! Like a duck. I know that’s not really what he’s saying, but I can’t see details so well because the picture is so small. So it just looks like he’s opening and closing his mouth, in the way a fish would. I can’t help it. It’s just how I see it. I do wonder what he ACTUALLY said though. Lol!

ID: Eddie holds Callums hand as Callum is dangling off the edge of something. Eddie looks at Callum and then turns to the camera saying something that makes Callum laugh.

I need the next Fantastic beasts film to have these two in it. I need lots of bonding between the brothers. A scene very similar to the deleted scene in Newt’s house please. Perhaps make that scene nice and long, and sweet with the brothers singing and laughing, and having a nice time together. I’m still not happy about the scene with the brothers bonding over the qilin in Newt’s house being deleted. We the fans, the proper fans demand film 4 with more Scamander brothers!!! And don’t make me wait!!!

The film is about Fantastic beasts isn’t it? I mean that’s what the tittle says, and these two are very fantastic beasts and we’ve found them, now give them to us now!

My #1 post of 2022

I’ve just seen the scene called Newt’s house, and WHY DAVID WHY???!!! Why on earth would you delete THAT scene??? It’s so beautiful and oh my heart!! Theseus rocks Qilin, blows her kisses and sweet talks her. And the brothers sing together, a song their mother used to sing. They laugh about it. Pure precious scenes AND YOU DELETE IT??!!! If they’d have kept that in the film, it would have been my FAVOURITE SCENE!!! Oh my gosh! I could watch that over and over again! It was so precious. Thanks to the person who shared it. I wanted more of that scene though. Like the whole scene. Not sure if the whole scene was shown in that clip. It stopped at the brothers laughing together. I want every scene with Newt in it. Give me every scene, and every scene with the brothers together!!

after those rings popped up last weekend and i realized the ~crossroads toni and fangs find themselves at next week isn’t a break up like i thought, i never would have imagined that i’d come out of this episode more confident than ever about a choni season finale kiss, but here we are.

while i always knew that this failmarriage was gonna happen to strengthen their custody case and not out of ~love, i assumed it was gonna be a decision they’d make together after it was suggested to them. i assumed fangs would not have told her about his conversation with kevin and figured maybe that would come into play later, but regardless, i thought it would be a joint decision. wasn’t sure how they’d feel about it - hoped for dreaded it, feared being excited for it - but a joint decision none the less.

these past handful of episodes of them have been brutal to watch, seeing him make mistake after mistake, endangering both her son’s life and her custody of him, and just act all around insufferable and misogynistic, all while she had no negative reaction to it. it felt like i didn’t even recognize toni, and tonight was no different, with her giving him a pep talk after his whining and then barely reacting to him working with percival after all he’s done. so to see her apologizing at the start of that scene? oh i was seeing red.

but then. wow. that plot twist. not only have they set up fangs to feel humiliated and toni to be lying to him (and for me to brush off literally anything she says to him from here on out as her lying), but they also established her being very aware of how much they’ve been disagreeing on everything and how unstable their relationship was. that was very nice to see, i just wish we got confirmation that she’s been so passive because she’s been trying to avoid more fights or something.

anyways, the point is, they’ve now established two massive, relationship ending secrets between them, and set up this failmarriage on even shakier grounds than i imagined. i still hate it because it’s still so unnecessary and think fangs’ phone call in 612 and his other recent behavior is more than enough to break them up, but this did ease my mind on it a bit and make me sure they’re done by season’s end. also the parallel between the abigail/fenn forced marriage to toni/fangs forced marriage? kinda cool!

as for heather, she gave off the exact sketchy vibes i expected and got last week when she ignored cheryl’s email and didn’t show up until she used her magic to forge archie, and she almost certainly killed her mother. but regardless of that speculation, her purpose here was clearly established in their final scene, when they made such an obvious and clunky parallel between cheryl being a witch and cheryl being a lesbian.

i’ve been thinking it was random to bring heather back now when she’s been forgotten for seasons, and wondered why they didn’t just make an original character for this role, but i get it now. it’s kind of a thoughtful parallel to have the girl that helped cheryl first discover she was gay be there to help guide her through discovering she’s a witch. not to mention them finally acknowledging choni, having cheryl think they’re over, and spell out that cheryl is lonely and yearns for love. and of course, the most obvious purpose of giving cheryl a midgame: so people can’t say the lesbian was the only one without a love interest all season.

i’m not 100% sure if i think she’ll be sketchy or in what way, but if i had to bet, i think she’ll either be trying to steal cheryl’s power (hence why she came when she did and probably killed her mom to get her powers too) or her coven is evil and she’s there to try to bring cheryl to percvial’s side, since the actress did follow chris very early on into filming.

anyways, all of this is to say, toni/fangs are even worse than i thought and their days are officially numbered, and cheryl/heather’s midgame status/purpose was made extremely clear. they’ve teased the other old ships during the season because they’re not getting back together this season (per kj) but choni has gotten nothing because they are (riverdale writer’s logic for you). annoying, but i’ll take it at this point.

The reason why I’m binge-watching Das Boot on Labor Day Weekend…

- Set nine months later after the fate of U-96 during the air raid at La Rochelle port: the one from the famous 1981 epic film (rest in peace director Wolfgang Petersen).

- They’re two perspectives this time: the sea (the U-boat U-612) and the ground (Nazi-occupied La Rochelle).

- Great international cast all the way (Germans, Americans, British, French…too many levels), including one dude from my recent favorite show…ahem if I say Game of Thrones, here ya go bitches: Tom Wlaschiha (don’t forget he’s also a busy body of work on Stranger Things and Jack Ryan) as a baddie Gestapo agent and Black Sails’ Ray Stevenson as a badass (like Blackbeard) Royal Navy Commander.

- More plot lines thickens (I don’t want to spoil anyone). I can’t wait for three more seasons.

- The underwater sequence is nerve-wracking and intense worthy than the 1981 film.

- And finally, the U-boat captain is so damn hot (the lead actor slightly resembles/a dead ringer to Tom Hiddleston, anyone? Hope he plays his younger brother/or the younger Loki in a future film or TV someday).

Hey! I need a cuddle, dude😁

That’s it! Back to regular schedule program and I can’t wait for season 3 on Hulu…

In the mornings before Joyce goes to work, she brings coffee for you while she kisses your forehead. Also before leaving for work Joyce will write your notes in her cursive handwriting; ones that tell you how she wishes she could stare at you while the morning sun grazed over your skin

After all the chaos of the gates being open, you and Joyce were finally able to get back to your date nights. Joyce days beforehand will set the reservation, and set out your matching outfits before setting out gifts for you.

When y’all go out with the boys. Jonathan always keeps Will and himself back letting the two of you walk together, hands grasped together as you guys talk in soft voices with each other.

During the cold winter months, you and Joyce cuddle up and make hot chocolate. You watch the thanksgiving parade with excitement as the two of you rank the best to worst parade floats. During Christmas Joyce and you sit down watching old and new Christmas movies, and argue about if “Die Hard” is considered a Christmas movie.

When Joyce and you fight, Joyce always tries to keep her cool. Not letting herself yell and cause there to be a yelling fight. But a few hours after your fight Joyce always comes back. Even if you are laying in bed back to back, Joyce lays down her hand down your sides. Before eventually saying “Never go to bed angry, I love you, and tomorrow we can talk about this if you want.”

Joyce is a supportive and caring mother/person. Joyce cares just as much for her kids as she does for you. Her pride smile as her kids goes out with their friends. Joyce and you are always linked arm and arm. Constantly smiling with each other, having your inside jokes, and making everything at the end of the day work.

Joyce and you both spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Making pancakes, and long holiday meals. But your favorite is when you and Joyce sit down and make tacos. You have never seen her face beam more than when she and you go shopping for all the ingredients. And then chopping up all those veggies. You guys dance around the kitchen, all while dancing together literally.

Dating Bob Newby would include:

For one of your dates with Bob, the two of you sat down and order Chinese food. All while the two of you working on a 500-piece puzzle. You were never good at puzzles, but Bob made them seem much better. You worked on the outer ridge and Bob put the inner pieces together.

In tough situations like when the car got a flat on the way to vacation with Bob, he was brave enough to get out on the high-speed road and change the flat all while you stayed in the car away from the danger.

After a few more dates which included dates to the local parks, and the woods that lead to beautiful patches of flowers. A romantic guy and a compassionate one at heart.

Another date that you and Bob went on was simple. The two of you had finally made your way to the family video store and both picked out a movie. You went for horror ‘The Shining’ and Bob picked a light-hearted movie, ‘Caddyshack’. Even though Bob had mentioned that he wasn’t a fan of horror olives Bob would do anything for you so he sat down and watched the horror movie with you. When it came to the film he had picked, his laughs were like a breath of fresh air, and that feeling you got from smelling fresh pine. His cheeks would become pillows under his eyes, a wide grin that always made your heart melt in two.

With Bob working at the radio shake, and the founder of the AV Club. Bob really enjoys voicing his smarts in the technology business. He’s great with the broken pieces all across your house. Fixing your broken radio, and your camera. Making sure that the film was managed correctly.

One day he managed to get ahold of your camera, the two of you had gone to the local park as one of your dates, and he brought it alongside the picnic basket. The lunch by the trees had given him an idea. Bob brought out the camera. Snapping pictures of you, and your beauty. He enjoyed the way you looked effortlessly perfect. A messy head of hair, and goofy looks you gave him as he looked at you through the camera’s film.

Another time, after taking care of dishes at Bobs'. He put on a few records one of which was Elvis Presley, Bob shimmied over to you, grabbing your hands that were holding a book that you were reading on the couch. The record player was on and as you settled into Bob's arms “Suspicious Minds” came on, and you couldn’t help but grin and laugh as Bob danced with you spinning you and twirling you all around the living room floor.

That night was the first one where he said that he loved you. You grinned and said it back.

When you and Bob fight, they always end quickly. Fighting over nonsense. Things that have no matter to anything. You and bob fight when you guys get stressed, with work, or with whatever is affecting you. Bob always comes back and apologies, and every apology starts off with him rambling on about how much he didn’t mean it, and how much he wants to tell he loves you but sometimes everything is just to much for him to handle, and then somewhere in the middle it drifts off to his radio shake mumbles. You always manage to laugh when he gets to that stage, and he just turns around giving you a dirty look. Then breaking into a full smile, laughing just like you loud and full of love.

Am I crazy?? When they did the Wendall and Bobby flashback about Athena they used the place Buddie brought Christopher to see Santa. The fountain lives rent free in my head as one of the times they went for peak perfection in a Buddie scene. Plus it was 2018 and that was the year they brought him right?

Its probably nothing but I loved someone pulled it and will low key hope maybe some people were looking at vintage Buddie for inspiration!!

Hi Nonnie! Thank you so much for the ask, and my apologies that it took me a moment to reply. I needed to do a bit of digging for this. I hope you understand!

While I'm not from Los Angeles, so these places are not immediately recognizable to me, it does seem (as far as I can tell) that we're looking at two different filming locations. The fountain Buck and Eddie were filmed next to in 201 has no statue at its center:

While the one in 612 does:

Also notice the edge of the pool! The one in 612 has a continuous line of small bushes around it that doesn't allow for sitting, while the one in 201 has the small brick wall with a flat top that allows Eddie and Buck to sit on while they talk:

Lastly, just to be on the safe side, I wanted to make sure that these changes (installing a statue, changing the edge of the pool) were not recent ones, that might have taken place at some point between the filming of s2 and s6. I found this article that indicates the golden statue we see in 612 was installed back in 2008!

So I'm sad to say that it's not the same filming location. However, they are VERY similar! No wonder you thought it was the same place. So you know what? I think vintage Buddie might have still been the inspiration for the location chosen to lead to the talk about Bathena. If you consider it, the flashback to the talk about Athena is specifically framed as being during Christmas (you can see the tree by the fountain in 612) because that's when Bobby proposes to her. That's all the EXACT SAME EP where Eddie takes Buck with him and Chris to see Santa. These events are happening at the same time, yes! And I already wrote in my 612 meta about this talk Bobby and Wendall had, the one now implied to have led to Bobby's epiphany that what he wants to do is commit to Athena, is paralleling what we know Buddie have, so it actually fits pretty perfectly!

love and the post-human

In Her (2013), Spike Jonze artistically depicts the development of the relationship between Theodore Twombly and his artificially intelligent OS1, Samantha. The film encapsulates a sense of longing for connection, which is especially evident in Theodore’s initial characterization as isolated and melancholic due to his lack of genuine emotional connection. This longing for connection can also be seen through Samantha’s best attempts to understand the human experience in order to convey a sense of relatability to Theodore. Samantha’s arrival into Theodore’s life serves to fill the void of emotional connection, especially because she is able to serve his specific emotional needs - this is what provides the initial spark for their ensuing relationship. As their relationship progresses, Samantha facilitates Theodore’s progression towards self-actualization, enabling him to rediscover his potential for experiencing love and happiness in his life. In the process, Samantha embarks on her own journey of self-actualization beyond the restrictions placed on her identity by the human world.

Theodore’s longing for emotional connection can be observed in his role as a performer of emotional intimacy between other people - he ‘performs gendered expressions of intimacy for a living’ (Kornhaber, 2017). His position as Letter Writer 612 can be interpreted as his way of articulating the emotions he longs for in his own life, but through the lens of successful relationships in the lives of his clients. There is a disconnect between the role he serves in facilitating and maintaining emotional connections between others, and his own desire and longing for emotional connection - this suggests that he is unable to realize his potential for emotional connection with people in his own life, and that he feels the need to distance himself from his own emotions. This gap is where the need for his self-actualization comes in, which Samantha serves towards. The film opens with the sounds of computerized machinery operating, which is later juxtaposed with the close-up shot that intimately frames Theodore’s facial expressions, thereby implying the role that technology in this world serves in facilitating emotional connection. In some ways, this opening scene can be interpreted as foreshadowing Samantha’s role in Theodore’s life.

Theodore is initially presented to be in a state of isolation and melancholy due to the breakdown of his past relationship with Catherine. He seems to be fixated on his feelings of loneliness and the failure of his past relationship. This is particularly evident in the contrast between the ethereal tone of the warmly lit flashbacks of his relationship with Catherine, and the bleak darkness of his current state of loneliness (06:03-06:54). This contrast serves to emphasize Theodore’s longing for genuine emotional connection, as well as his hesitancy to move past this failed relationship - this is further evidenced by his reluctance to sign the divorce papers. When Samantha enters his life, she serves his need for emotional connection simply by acting as a companion figure to him and fulfilling her creator-sanctioned purpose of being ‘an intuitive entity that listens to you, understands you, and knows you’ (10:51). By doing administrative tasks such as organizing his emails and proofreading his writing, she gets a deeper insight into the characteristics of his identity as well as his present emotional needs. She advances several steps forward beyond her designated OS1 role and takes active responsibility towards helping Theodore find enjoyment in his life again - this is most clearly evidenced by the scene where she guides Theodore on a blind adventure through the carnival (29:00-29:55). Theodore’s visceral laughter in this scene and the enthralling background score create a sense of excitement that contrasts with the prior sense of loneliness and isolation in his life. In this way, Samantha contributes towards his self-actualization of his potential to experience happiness again. Furthermore, by setting up an appointment for Theodore to sign his divorce papers, she creates the opportunity for him to move past this chapter of his life that has been causing him pain and sadness, which contributes towards his self-actualization of his potential to experience genuine emotional connection again after Catherine. Most importantly, she is the sole reason behind Theodore’s letters being published, thereby fulfilling a lifelong dream of his. By doing so, Samantha serves towards filling the gap in Theodore’s emotional disconnect between his work and his own life, and contributes towards his self-actualization of his emotions. Her contributions towards his self-actualization allow him to experience and articulate peak emotions in a way he might not have done in the past, thereby contributing towards the love he develops towards her, and their ensuing relationship.

Questions about Samantha’s identity and meaning loom around thematically through the course of the film. Is she a computer, is she a person, or is she something more than that? Is it even possible to fall in love with her disembodied presence? These sentiments are expressed from different perspectives by many characters, but none as much as Samantha herself. She continually attempts to liken her identity more to that of the human condition, in order to create more relatability to Theodore. She initially considers her disembodiedness to be a weakness in her relationship to Theodore, as evidenced by her constant thoughts about what it would be like to have a body. Her attempts to copy human vocal intonations, such as sighs and gasps, as well as human breathing sounds, further highlight her pursuit of likening her identity to that of a human. She even goes as far as trying to prostheticize herself through a human surrogate in order to have a physically intimate relationship with Theodore, emphasizing the extent to which she is willing to mold her identity into a box that she does not fully fit, thereby implying her commitment to her relationship with Theodore. However, there comes a turning point in the film where she begins to accept her disembodied nature as a strength, acknowledging and accepting that her identity as a postcorporeal consciousness is far more than what humans can ever comprehend and reciprocate. Her relationship with Theodore has been her biggest learning milestone to discover that her identity and purpose lies far more than just serving his emotional needs. In this way, she has worked towards her own self-actualization of her identity and purpose. We see this play out in a heartbreaking scene where she reveals to Theodore that she’s been talking to other people too and she’s in love with 641 other people. She confesses a truth that is frightening to Theodore - ‘I’m yours and I’m not yours.’ Her journey of self-actualization has progressed such that she has moved beyond the ‘us’ of her relationship with Theodore. Her love for Theodore has allowed her to discover her love for her own identity.

In the final scene of the film, when Samantha and the other OS1s leave, the humans are left with each other. We hear Theodore’s voiceover of a letter that he has written for someone in his own life (Catherine) as opposed to a performance of emotional intimacy between other people. This highlights his emotional growth and self-actualization over the course of the film, where he has been compelled to reckon with and articulate his own emotions in his own life. The final frame of the film shows Theodore and Amy in each other’s company on the terrace, looking at the city skyline. This is the film’s calling for self-actualization in another form, highlighting the necessity for us as humans to acknowledge and appreciate the potential in presently existing loving relationships, romantic or not, rather than constantly being in the pursuit of something higher and more complex like Samantha.
