Now I'm curious cause of your tag. What did Swedish media say about the eurovision thing?
Oof yeah, here's a post detailing it ... here another... Basically they've absolutely flipped over the fact that Finnish public didn't give Loreen points at all (which I find absolutely hilarious) and suddenly started wielding such rhetoric as "the former eastern part of our kingdom" referring to Finland, which is???? like??? do I even need to say how Not Okay that is?
It might seem to some that the Finnish people are reacting to Sweden's (unfair) win and them being sore winners (which, points to them, I didn't know was possible!) with too much drama, but it's all tied to our history together. Finland has traditionally seen itself, and has been seen by other countries (Sweden included) as the sort of "little brother" to the more advanced, better-faring, glorious Sweden. While Sweden to my knowledge doesn't much care about what Finland gets up to (perhaps overlooking/ignoring us and our merits), Finland is always comparing itself to Sweden and trying to live up to it. It's a very common rhetoric and sort of, the atmosphere over here. We know more about Sweden than Sweden knows about us; we're constantly conscious that Sweden exists. Sweden gets talked about in international news; Finland, if mentioned, is often tied to - you guessed it - being Sweden's neighboring country.
We used to be part of Sweden for 600 years. During that time, Swedish was implemented as the language of the culture and the "civilised" whereas the finns living in the eAstErn pArT oF tHe kiNgDoM were seen as "wild" and "uncivilised" and just, generally a lesser people to the Swedish speaking population. We haven't been under Sweden's rule for some 200 years and STILL we can't seem to shake their influence on us. Swedish is still a mandatory language to learn at school (and I have many opinions on that, but that'd be another post). Finnish as a language has been disregarded for its whole existence. Our leading national thinkers and poets in the 19th century, who were the first ones to really push for the Finnish identity instead of us seeing ourselves as part of Sweden or Russia, wrote in Swedish. The first novel in Finnish was published in 1870.
So this is monumental to us, to have the whole word watching Finland and not Sweden. Finland has a lot of merits, especially considering how small a people we are (just 5,5mil). To have a song in our language, in Finnish be this popular, is something we couldn't have imagined. We as a people are humble to the extreme, so much that we might easily scorn anyone who is too successful (not a good thing!), and this is the first time in my life that I'm seeing the whole country rally behind someone like this. When we say "Our Jere" we mean it with our whole hearts. We're so so proud of him, everyone is, and for once Finnish people seem to think in unison that someone deserves all the praise and the success.
SO, to have Sweden in this UNIQUE moment of Finland raising its head and being "we're so amazing", with the rest of Europe going "yes you're so amazing!!", spew rhetoric like this, is just, unbelievable to me. Like I can't just believe that in the 21st century there are people in Sweden who hold up 200 year old thought patterns of our country. It's been shocking 'cos though there's always been rivalry, it's felt more... tongue in cheek. We "love to hate" Sweden over here. It's been "I hate Sweden (affectionate)". But now we find this unbelievably condescending and belittling attitude towards us raising its head, and we wonder, we thought we two were okay?? But have they always held these beliefs???
So there's a sense of betrayal in the air as well. And just, full on disbelief. And maybe we're starting to see that it has been like this all along, but we've decided to turn a blind eye to it? True colours shining through? Perhaps not... but yeah.
Sweden not looking good here!
(here's one more post that says the same that i did but was better at making it SHORT oops)

We did not in fact win that race.
The World Championship in Biathlon 2024 just finished up today! Congrats to France for being the best nation, Norway for getting the most medals, and Sweden for taking their first ever gold medal in a biathlon world championship 🥳✨
Sometimes the Norwegian commentators just say something so weird I need to draw it

Some mantras for Finns and Käärijä fans to live by in these trying times:
Silver is no shame.
Winner by the popular vote.
If you cant bring home gold, then bring glory!

As a swede I’m pretty baffled that no one realized that tattoo basically was a remix of euphoria, they sound the same, Käärijä should have won, 100%

whatever I say about sweden tonight cannot be held against me. it’s the eurovision spirit and the nordic rivalry getting to me. after all, in finland we say “it doesn’t matter who wins as long as sweden loses”

I don't know which Sweden it is that you're referring to, but I can reassure you that we love Käärijä as much as any other country (although not as much as you finns ofc), while we are proud of Loreen and her historic win I haven't talked to anyone who wasn't cheering for Käärijä to win by the end of the show, he is the people's winner and that include us as well :3
It is unfortunate to be in a position to rob you of the crazy party your entire country would host if he had won, especially as we do not find this win anywhere near as impactful of a win as the first time Loreen won. But at least this might make him even more of a legend who is beloved by all!
I'm talking about how media in general tends to blend Finland and Sweden together. If something is up in the news about Finland, people outside Nordics often brush it off as "Oh, it's something Swedish related probably" or "Finland and Sweden, they're just two peas in the pod" type of stuff I see a lot.
And it's really frustrating because it feels like you can't mention Finland in any context without adding Sweden into it every single time.
Also, I'm frustrated and annoyed by the fact that Sweden is right now trash-talking Finland a lot in their own media. Calling us a dumb nation and referring to us as "the former eastern part of the kingdom". All because Finnish televoters didn't give points to Sweden. Many times Finland has been left out or gotten just the smallest points from Sweden but we've never really complained about it. In a Facebook group I'm in someone said that the same type of Swedish fb group atm is just bitching and trashing Käärijä completely, saying how he's a disgrace and they'd be so ashamed if he was the one they sent to the competition.
For so many years has Finland been chewed up and humiliated by Sweden but still, we've thought of the whole country as our brothers in arms. Playful rivalry, which is now just turning even more sour than it was before.
It's honestly sad but at the same time, I feel like Finland finally needs to cut the shit. We've been getting bullied by both Sweden and Russia for so long that enough is enough.
Käärijä gave us something that we've been wanting to get from the world.
And that is to be seen as Finland, which in fact isn't the shadow of Sweden.
Finland, who you can talk about without ALWAYS adding Sweden into the same context or sentence. Finland isn't a shadow of anyone.
Finland is a proud independent country that despite being under the control of both Sweden and Russia never lost its own culture.
And never will.
That's what Finnish sisu is.

https://www.aftonbladet.se/podcasts/ab/program/1291
Eurovision and Melodifestivalen specialized journalists Tobbe Ek and Markus Larsson weren’t too happy about Finns not granting any televotes for Loreeen. Few quotes from Aftonbladet’s (one of the largest daily newspapers in Sweden) Eurovision podcast:
Ek: ”The reason is that Finns are jealous. They are collectively jealous at us Swedes and that led them not voting for us.”
Ek: ”How is it even possible that Finns think there were ten better songs than Loreen? That’s shameful.”
Larsson: ”The Finns gave points even for Germany over Loreen. That’s sick. Says lot about Finnish understanding about music and about their taste.”
Ek: ”I’m fucking furious.”
Larsson: ”Dumbass people.”
Ek: ”Finland was only country where Sweden didn’t get any points from the people. Shame on you Finland, it serves you right you didn’t win!”
Larsson: ”I agree! F*ck them!”
--------------------------------------------------
This is nothing new to us finns, swedes have always treated us like this. And it just culminates to eurovision which fucking sucks. I hope this gets spread out bit more so people can see under the polished picture sweden has put out.
I personally voted for germany and other 9 countries that in my own opinion had better songs than sweden, this type of articles just give so icky and bad feeling over everything. There are bad loosers in the world, but swedes seem to be really sore winners. Nothing seems to be enough they need it all. We already gave 12p by jury, but then again our jurys team leader was born in sweden so theres big conflict of interest in that. I think they know it was not pure win and are trying to pin the bad feeling into us.

Dear Swedes,
Do yall have any funny, stupid, amusing podcast recommendations in swedish? My swedish matriculation exam (a big ass test) is coming up and I am trying to find low-effort ways to study
Sincerely,
Your Finnish friend
