There's a lot of history in lower Manhattan. Lots of early American history south of Wall Street, lots of early 20th century history in mid-town, there's Pier 59 where the Titanic was going to port before it's fateful encounter with an iceberg, and there's the John J. Harvey Fireboat.

Firefighters call her "The Harvey." She's the boat on the left in this painting.

She sits at Pier 66 on the Hudson River.

Here's something I copied from the website www.1931Fireboat.org: "Fireboat John J. Harvey, launched in Brooklyn in 1931, was named for FDNY pilot John J. Harvey. Firefighter Harvey was killed in the line of duty fighting a ship fire. Harvey was a historic first; the first fireboat powered by internal combustion engines and the first that could pump and maneuver simultaneously. She was the largest, fastest fire fighting machine of her time, capable of pumping 18,000 gallons per minute, roughly the equivalent of 20 terrestrial fire trucks. The innovations of her design influenced all subsequent fireboats."

Fireboat John J. Harvey was retired in 1994 but then brought back into service on September 11, 2001 to assist the FDNY after the attacks on the World Trade Center complex.

Check out their website. There is so much history in that one amazing boat. And she still sails!

I'm an onlooker, like most of us. So, I am not an authority on Fireboat John J. Harvey but I'm moved by the history.

I painted this from a photo I took when I visited New York City with my son, Alex, in October of 2016. We were sitting on Pier 64 looking north.

We went there because I wanted to share some of my own personal history with Alex.

I have some foggy memories of going to the piers near Chelsea on the Hudson River with my Dad when I was very young. My parents met not far from there in an office where they both worked on 6th Avenue in the 1940s (now Avenue of The Americas) and my Dad worked at the old Police Headquarters building on Centre Street.

I have no idea which piers we visited back in those days. I just wanted to share the stories with my son. I also wanted some new memories.

It wasn't until after I painted this picture that I learned of the significance of Fireboat John J. Harvey.

Wow.

You know how they say, "Stop and smell the roses?" Well, this was one of those moments. And THESE roses had the scent of courage and sacrifice.
