Sheik Mansour: How Manchester City's Powerful Owner is a Wolf in Sheikh's Clothing

You have just won the biggest lottery ever. Hairs stand on their ends as you’ve just hit the American Powerball jackpot. A 1 in 292,201,338 is about to change your life. As you look in your bank account you see a cool $997.6m. What do you do? Do you buy a house? Car? Plane? Dreams become reality and all life’s immediate problems melt away as jubilation takes control.

Well, if you wanted to equal the apparent net worth of that of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Vice President, you would have to win the Powerball’s biggest prize ever over 20 times. The odds on that would be 1 in 5,844,026,760 or the equivalent of guessing heads or tails correctly 33 times in a row; it sounds pretty unlikely. Better yet, Mansour’s wealth pales in comparison to that of his family which were valued at over £555 billion in 2008, or the equivalent of over 10,000,000 kilos of gold.

Sheikh Mansour comes from a family lineage that transformed Dubai from a sleepy fishing village into the most populous city in the UAE within just a couple of centuries. The UAE, with no small help from the Al Nahyan dynasty, the family of Sheikh Mansour, is now the 19th-richest country worldwide when accounting for GDP per capita according to the IMF, putting them ahead of the United Kingdom.

If all context was removed, you could view this dramatic rise from the rubble like Rocky. But unlike The Italian Stallion, the UAE are not fighting oiled-up heavyweight champions, instead, they are more like Tommy Gunn sucker punching their defenceless citizens.

The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, when interviewed by the BBC in 2014, talked about how countries cannot kill their own people otherwise they risk being overthrown. It is safe to say that he portrayed a vastly different regime than the one he runs.

Machiavelli once said, “It is better to be feared than to be loved if one cannot be both,” and it is safe to say that Mansour and co. have taken that logic and ran with it. The UAE commonly employs prison-like conditions for workers, torturing information out of alleged criminals or censoring everything that remotely depicts the UAE as anything less than a paradise. Keeping your people weak is a sure-fire way to keep power in any country.

The UAE has no democratic votes on who runs the country which has led to brutal misuse of power within the country. They have tortured their own citizens without having something as trivial as an arrest warrant, basically allowing the torture of whoever they please. A free press isn’t a concept in the UAE as there is extremely heavy regulation on what can and cannot be said. If that wasn’t bad enough, the UAE deported Uighur Muslims back to China to face a fate similar to that of the Jews in Nazi-occupied states circa 1941. Yet, the amount of media coverage of the UAE is limited, specifically on Manchester City’s owner Sheikh Mansour.

Not even an alleged 115 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules, or when Manchester City spearheaded the formation of the much-maligned Super League or Sheikh Mansour’s most recent fiasco of allegedly aiding Russian oligarchs can bring media attention to the owner of one of the most successful football clubs of the last decade. There has not been a single BBC article surrounding the recent controversy about the Sheikh’s links to Russia. In fact, the BBC have published an equal number of articles about Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group, led by John Henry, as they have about Sheikh Mansour. This is despite Henry having no influence over one of the chief countries for petroleum exports.

Of course, that isn’t to say that no mainstream news media have not covered Sheikh Mansour’s recent scandal. The Guardian, Manchester Evening News and The Independent are a few of the mainstream news sources that have reported the allegation. But for the BBC, the biggest news channel in the UK, the website which had 1.2 billion viewers in April 2021, the “leading incubator of the UK’s story-telling talent,” according to former director general of the BBC Lord Tony Hall, to not have anything to say on the matter goes to show how well the UAE is doing at hiding their problems. After all, if the biggest centre for UK news isn’t relaying such damning information about the owner of the team that just won the continental treble, then the public will not have a clue as to the atrocities this beloved owner is committing.

Never once has Sheikh Mansour addressed these issues by the British media. This is mainly because he has only been to two competitive matches since he bought Man City in 2008 – even missing Manchester City’s first-ever Champions League final in the process of trying to avoid media attention. But, we don't need Mansour to see that the UAE isn't a fair country.

Thankfully, you don’t even have to leave the UAE's own website to see how truly evil of a government they are. On the front page of their 'human rights' section on the UAE's website, they say they protect the rights of everyone based on, “gender, religion, caste, doctrine, race, colour or ethnic origin.” If you are disabled or not straight you are it a less than ideal scenario.

But ignoring the rights of the disabled and non-straight is ok because at least they make sure racism is not a rampant problem in the UAE. That is of course you don’t include the time when the UAE detained 375 African workers in prison for two months, falsified negative PCR test for them to travel, took all their belongings such as legal documents and then denied them access to counsel.

According to Lynn Maalouf, the Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, this series of events against these 375 workers was, “racial targeting."

She goes on to say, “The authorities [of the UAE] have brutalised hundreds of individuals on the basis of their skin colour, ill-treating them in detention, stripping them of their dignity before deporting them en masse.”

Aren’t you glad that the UAE protects the rights of every race, colour or ethnic origin? Sarcasm aside, the UAE is simply lying about their human rights.

A football club is more than just a vessel for fans to pour emotion into for 90 minutes every week. Football clubs are important members of local communities that help provide a sense of togetherness in a world that is getting more disconnected by the second.

To give an example, Junior Blues was a supporters’ club for local Mancunian children to connect with Manchester City. Players would come and play games with the children and the club would give special treatment to the kids to make them have an affinity for, let’s face it, Manchester’s second side at the time. City still give preferential treatment to the kids by giving out cheaper tickets, offering potential meet and greets with the players, and, of course, the possibility of being a matchday mascot. However, you do not see the same level of interaction between the fans and players as there once was, which is a trend we see throughout not only the Premier League, but elite football everywhere.

Ian Cheeseman, a former BBC journalist for over two decades who specialised in covering Manchester City, has been involved with The Blues since the 1970s. From stewarding away day trains, to commentating over Sergio Aguero’s famous title-winning goal against QPR, Cheeseman is the definition of devoted fan. He has even gone to over 2,000 competitive matches which equates to 125 days of just straight football. He feels like the new owners aren’t as involved with the local fans as it once was.

“I’ve got mixed feelings about the takeover, I knew the direction in which everything would go when he [Sheikh Mansour] came in.”

Cheeseman goes on to say, “I came home that night and I said to my family, we’ve just been took over by one of the richest men in the world, you’re going to see the best players in the world, but you’re also going to see this club go from a down to earth Manchester club to a global brand which will attract tourist and tickets will be harder to get, players will move further and further away.”

The globalisation of football is a necessary evil for elite clubs around the world. Football now is all about how much money a team can make.

“It’s a global brand,” said Cheeseman.

“People talk to me about New York City FC, Mumbai City, Melbourne City and some team in Uruguay, I couldn’t give a s***, I’m a Man City fan.”

Cheeseman runs a podcast, Forever Blue, where he discusses Manchester City. Former City players regularly join Ian to converse including Rodney Marsh, Ian Bowyer, David White and many more. He doesn’t feel like he can bring in current players on his podcast due to the explosion of popularity of his beloved City.

“There are some people in the club trying to maintain that connection, but inevitably you might say the club is going further and further away from the fans.”

Cheeseman adds, “Tonight an ex-player will be on my podcast, I have a long connection going back with the club. The current players, none of them would be on my podcast, you wouldn’t even get an autograph.”

Unfortunately for fanatics like Cheeseman, this business is pretty pricey considering the astronomical transfer fees banded about for players nowadays. Manchester City, under the Sheikh, have spent over £1.6 billion on just transfer fees. That figure doesn’t include a lot of significant running costs of a football club like wages, staff and expanding the Etihad stadium.

That figure also doesn’t include the £1 billion Acre Real Estate Investment, an investment company wholly owned by Sheikh Mansour, spent on Manchester’s regeneration programme called ‘Manchester Life’.

“They’ve don’t an awful lot for the local community, all that construction work brings jobs.” Cheeseman was quick to add, “The area where the City Football Academy is was a dire works, and that land it was built was considered poisoned land because of the chemicals… they’ve sanitised that area and constructed one of the most impressive training complexes in the world.”

Sheikh Mansour, undoubtedly, has added wealth to one of Manchester’s previously disadvantaged areas. Bradford, where the Etihad Stadium is located, was a coal mining town until the collieries closed in 1968 leaving 1500 workers without jobs. Although the stadium was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Mansour did spend £1b on the Etihad campus which contains private pitches, a college and a state-of-the-art sports science centre which has created a lot of jobs. Even better, Mansour is creating jobs for locals.

“One of the things that they [Manchester City’s ownership group] have tried to do is use local employment and even, where possible, local materials which is very supportive of the local area. I’m not aware of any owners who have done all this.”

Looking at Mansour through an Anglophile scope, he has undoubtedly added to the community of Manchester. He has invested billions into the local community, and as Cheeseman said, this hasn’t been seen in English football before.

But this investment begs the question of why?

“Presumably it’s because they knew there would be a lot of negativity surrounding their ownership, and it was their way of trying to prove that not everything about this takeover was negative.”

And this is what everything comes back to. No matter how much Mansour does there is simply no getting around that this is all an illusion. This attempt to gain a reputation in Manchester is just a distraction from the true horrors that generate this money. It is textbook sportswashing.

UEFA, The Premier League and the FA could not stop Manchester City from joining the European Super League in 2021. Even Boris Johnson’s conservative party, couldn’t stop the Cityzens, and the rest of the six teams that tried to betray football, deviating from the history that people like Ian adore. The governing bodies of football have little to no control over what the elite teams do, especially Manchester City.

Roman Abramovich had all his assets frozen when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. What is the difference between Abramovich’s involvement in Russia and Sheikh Mansour’s involvement in the war in Yemen? The answer is pretty simple, Mansour has a better image. Manchester City have a better image than Chelsea. Everything in today’s sporting context is about image and soft power. It makes sense now why Mansour would decide to invest billions into Manchester because he has soft power over the local economy of the city.

Sure, if the UK government wanted to kick out Mansour like they did to Abramovich it's not like Manchester would cease to exist. But, they would lose out on a lot, such as the £10 billion that the UAE pledged to invest in the UK in 2021 for clean energy, technology and infrastructure projects.

Every time a person talks about Manchester City winning trophies or breaking records there will always be an asterisk. Every person who looks at the full context will point out how they have bought these titles and accolades with blood money. At the same time, some fans genuinely do not care, especially those outside of Manchester who just want to see the best football possible.

The Sheikh is here to stay. He has a lot of soft power in the UK with his ownership of Manchester City, which is now an institution of England, and his investment in UK infrastructure. Manchester City fans have lost one of their sense of community with the players and are now just another super club within a globalised sport.

Football fans have more power than anyone else, without anyone watching these multi-millionaires playing for state-owned clubs the show would stop. We have the power to change football before the beautiful game becomes a distant memory. Just look at the Super League's quick demise.

To end, I would like to try and convince fans of Manchester City to think about their owners without any tribalism. It must be difficult to look at your club, the thing that has brought you the most joy throughout your life, and scrutinise it because of something out of your control. But I plea with you to think before you buy that next shirt or scarf and just remember who you are supporting. And, if I can't convince you then maybe one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century might.

7 Days in Bali : Day 6

Lempuyang Temple, Tirta Gangga, Batik Art

Hey guys,

Sorry for not writing for a very long time. I was rlly busy. But today I'm gonna be writing about Lempuyang temple, tirta gangga and batik art centre.

We woke up at morning 4 AM to go to Lempuyang temple. It gets really crowded. When I say really crowded, I mean it. We reached there about 4:45 and when we got our number, we were shocked 😯.

127! At 4:45!

You understand how crowded it is now. Anyway, since it was a temple, we couldn't enter without a Sarong (A cloth, which you tie around your waist, similiar to Lungi/Dhoti)

We had to walk up the mountain for a while, and Suku Kaka (Our guide), dropped us there. First we took pictures near Mount Agung, which came out pretty well. Then we just sat down and waited to be called. We also took other photos in the temple. We practiced some poses to take and watched the other for 4 particularly LONG hours, until we were finally called.

We gave him our phones, and saw the trick. He took a mirror and kept it under the camera,which created a water effect(since there was no real water like the pics we see), a person can get 4 photos max, and then we just went back.

On our way back, we got some coconut water(our hotel gave us only bread for the breakfast box!) And got ready to go to Tirta Gangga.

And I have a tip for you , if you are planning on going to Bali, remember to take some cash wherever you go(you need to pay to go to the bathroom, don't worry although it's pretty neat)

Next Suku Kaka took us to Tirta Gangga. Tirta Gangga belongs to the royal family, it's kinda like their meeting area. And also a very good tourist spot. It was beautiful, the fishes were swimming happily with joy as everyone was feeding them. We took plenty of Photos, and had a lot of fun. And it was time for Lunch.

To our luck, we found an Indian restaurant. Very unlikely.

We went in, but didn't see any indian chefs inside.

Is he on leave? Are they not selling Indian today?

Well,no. But first, we needed to try the food.

It was amazing. Especially the samosas. And it tasted indian and not like any Indonesian completely different substitute.

We asked the waiter, if there were any indian chefs inside. But no! The owner was an Indonesian guy, who watched YOUTUBE videos and learnt how to cook Indian food! That is COOL.

After that, we went to batik printing centre. They showed us a lady making batik art, then it was just shopping.

We bought a bag for our relatives (as the next trip was to india, even though we live in UAE, we make a month long trip once a year)

Then we made our way to the final and best hotel, Alaya Dedaun Kuta.

When I say best , I mean it.

It was a villa, not a small one, but with a living room, dressing room, kitchen, super big bathroom with both a shower and bathtub seperately, and a bedroom(duh).

They offered us a welcome drink, free cookies, and also sprayed insecticides as the night brought mosquitoes with it.

It was a villa with a GIGANTIC private swimming pool, and not that expensive either.

They had free activities like Rice body scrub making, which we scheduled for the day we were Leaving. And we also booked a bunga rampai flower bath.

We also planned breakfast in swimming pool, for the next day.

We took rest for the rest of the day, and in the next day, I'll talk about Ulun Danu Temple, Tanah Lot Temple, and Banyumala Waterfalls.

Part Four - What If...

Word Count - 1863

Author’s Note: I have... I have never written so much so quickly. Must be fate! Going to try queuing posts, I think. I dunno... Please enjoy Part Four, and get ready for another Lord Knows how many chapters...

The the truck pulled into the base, Jack was the first to the boot, ready to tear the three men a new one. You didn't leave soldiers behind, and they all knew it. Instead, he discovered four, their Lieutenant stripped of her head and jacket, gauze on two wounds still bleeding heavily.

"Jesus Christ..." Jack muttered, Dalton calling for a gurney to move his commanding officer. The Colonel followed out with Greer and Lima, the latter rushing over and helping carry Jones to the infirmary.

"My office... Now." The Colonel ordered, the three troopers following with the two CIA officials. Once doors were closed and areas cleared, Rogers began screaming. "YOU DISOBEYED DIRECT ORDERS GENTLEMEN." He yelled, and Jack went to their defence, but Greer shook his head. "What happens if I lose all of you?" He asked. Gomez spoke up first.

"No soldier is left behind, sir. We got her out." He replied, his eyes fixed on the wall in front of him.

"Indeed you did, but it doesn't change the fact that... Dalton are you bleeding?" Rogers stopped in front of the soldier, who was holding his side.

"It seems I am sir..." Dalton replied, the Colonel shaking his head.

"Get to the med bay... All three of you are going to be cleaning shitters for two weeks..." the decision was made, and the soldiers left. With inferiors gone, Jack spoke up as Rogers poured himself a whiskey.

"You said the building was clear. The only reason the team went in was because the building was clear." Jack stated, arms folded across his chest.

"And you said that it was a vent." The Colonel responded. "Talk to Gomez about the body cams. With all luck, Jones caught someone's face on tape." It was dismissive, cold. Greer nodded for Jack to leave, and he did, heading over to Gomez who was surveying the truck in the clearing.

"Are you body and still working? I know we had feed from Dalton but..." Jack started, and Gomez nodded in response, in clipping his own and passing over another two.

"Dalton's and Candy's." Gomez said as he passed them over, sighing and walking away. Jack knew the feeling, and nodded his thanks before heading back to the meeting room, preparing for an evening of scanning through the hours of footage.

Around hour three, a soft knock sounded on the door, and Jack called from them to come in, thinking it was Greer. He had managed to pull out audio clips, and had watched the videos through one too many times. Searching data bases in Afghanistan and the US for partial matches to faces was no easy task, and neither was understanding Pashto. It was a struggle for him during own time serving, but it was so many years ago now he had lost all understanding of the language.

"Damn, you look worse than me." Jack's head whipped around to see Jones, pale and sporting a sling over her bloody undershirt.

"Lieutenant Jones. Candy... How you doing?" He asked, offering her a seat which she accepted.

"Better than I look. They really overdid it with the sling... Got off lucky. No major damage, should be fine in a fortnight, active in a few days." The statements didn't make sense to the civilian, but the past few days had taught Jack that Candy was not the sort of person to be hindered by a couple of stitches.

"I've been combing through the footage you guys got on body cam, trying to get facial scans and compare them to our databases, but no luck yet..." Jack informed, and Candy nodded, having a look over what he had managed.

"And audio files?" She asked, and Jack opened a file containing audible clips he had pulled from the videos.

"You speak Pashto?" He asked as she pressed play, and she shook her head, picking up a pen and beginning to write.

"They're speaking Arabic... That doesn't make sense..." Jones spoke up after the file played, starting the next and beginning to write again, transcribing the dialogue. After about twenty minutes, Candy passed the last file's transcription to Jack, who had been reading through them as she went.

"I don't get it, Arabic isn't spoken here... at all." Candy spoke up as Jack scanned, the man standing to rearrange the papers into order, lips pursed as he thought.

"There is documented proof that Roland spent at least a year in Iraq, plus time in the UAE..." Jack spoke slowly, piecing together the theory in his head. If Roland had recruited elsewhere, Afghanistan systems wouldn't have a record of them. And, by the layout of the warehouse, maybe it wasn't a base of operations.

"We've been looking in the wrong place. Roland isn't working out of Afghanistan, he's using it as a storage spot." Jack concluded, letting out a sigh of frustration. They were back to step one again.

"Well, if he is recruiting and, theoretically, distributing in Arab speaking countries... Where is he getting his shit?" Candy asked, glancing to the map on the wall. Jack followed her gaze, turning to the map and picking up a pad of sticky notes. He began placing notes on specific countries across the map, a frown on his face as he worked his way across the picture.

"Could you do me a favour and find Greer, the Colonel too?" He called, and Candy nodded, making her way out of the room towards the Colonel's office. The guards stationed at the door looked her over before letting her in, Greer and Rogers sat opposite each other.

"Doctor Ryan has found something we require you to see." She announced, the pair rising from their chairs and following her to the meeting room. In the short space of time she was away, Jack had managed to piece together his puzzle, stars drawn on certain sticky notes.

"Afghanistan has never been in possession of nuclear weapons. Worldwide, there have only been 15 countries to house them." He indicated the countries bearing post it notes. "Afghanistan was a shipping point, a storage unit to move the radioactive substances from A to B. But since China," he pulled off the post-it, "Along with these four countries," Russia, the US, the UK and France, "are part of NPT. And since we have confirmation that Belarus, Kazakhstan, the Ukraine and South Africa no longer have nuclear stockpile... And excluding NATO members..." Four notes remained. "Israel is too far away, so is North Korea..." Two notes. "Pakistan and India. Roland is shipping in supplies from these countries to here, then moving further afield into Arab countries where he is basing the project."

"Pakistan and India?" Rogers questioned, and Jack nodded.

"I have a suspicion their stockpiles of radioactive material has been dwindling rapidly... Until we rule one out, we have to assume both." Jack confirmed.

"Ryan, this seems like a stretch..." Rogers started, but Jones interjected.

"If I may sir... A call to the Indian and Pakistan embassy is all that would be required... Surely the Seventh floor officials would authorise that?" She smiled at Jack who couldn't help but smile back.

"Very well... I'll phone ahead. The helicopter to get you to the airport will be arriving soon, you might want to pack." The Colonel nodded, walking to the door.

"Could we take Lieutenant Jones with us?" Jack asked, shocking the room.

"Jones, you are not currently assigned anywhere, are you?" Rogers asked, to which Jones shook her head.

"My placement here was for the CIA operation, and I would have been receiving new orders next week." Candy confirmed. Rogers nodded.

"I'll talk with command, have you assigned to security detail. Enjoy your new position Lieutenant." Rogers informed and left the room.

"I should... I should go pack." Candy smiles, excusing herself.

"Are you serious Jack?" Greer spoke up once she had left, Jack taking down sticky notes and gathering evidence into a folder, laptop sat atop. "You do this every single operation."

"Do what?"

"Think with your crotch!"

"Jim, come on... She translated the dialogue, she might have information we want. Taking her along is beneficial to the case." Jack tried to reason, walking to the door with Greer.

"She's a liability..." Greer warned, closing the door behind them. The pair walked to their temporary sleeping quarters, bags already packed.

"It's my case Jim, alright? You're here because I asked for you, and if seventh had the choice you would be fishing and drinking beers in Tahoe right now, enjoying early retirement." Jack snapped back, and Jim raised his hands in defence.

"You asked for me, not the other way around. And having watched you sleep you way through medical professionals, German intelligence officers and God knows who else Jack, I was offering sound advice. Don't let your dick get in the way of the operation."

"Duly noted..." Jack replied, grabbing his bags and walking towards the barracks, needing the air. Had he done the wrong thing, bringing on someone who had already proved themself useful? He stopped outside the barrack door, taking a breath before entering. He smiled as he moved through trips readying for sleep, nodding hellos to those he had encountered in his brief stay at the compound before stopping by the last bed and Lieutenant Jones, who was clearing out the last of her things into her duffel, moving as quickly as she could with one arm. Jack bent over and took the last of her clothes for her and packing them away, zipping the bag up for her.

"Thanks..."

"You travel lighter than most." Jack commented, taking the duffel for her and leading her to the door.

"When you are moving as much as I am, you don’t get attached to things." Jones replied, the pair exiting the barracks and making their way to the helicopter that was landing just in front of the compound. Greer fell into step with them, and they climbed into the chopper, buckling in and fixing their headsets.

"We should be at the plane in twenty minutes folks." The pilot spoke over the comms, and Greer nodded.

"When was the last time you were in the US, Jones?" Jim asked her, and it took Candy a moment to answer.

"Nine years ago, I think? I went home after my first tour... God I didn't realise it was so long ago." Candy admitted. She didn't exactly have a home there anymore, and as a result she saw no point flying back and forth. Her friends, her family, were the soldiers she served with, and when she had leave she visited them.

"A homecoming then. We'll need to get you some proper American food when we land." Jack suggested with a laugh, and Candy could only nod, relaxing into her seat and watching the country below her race by. A pit opened in her stomach, but whether it was one of excitement of being on the mission, or dread of leaving her environment, she didn't know. She had never been afraid of change, but when you are moving from one war zone to another, it's less daunting. How much had she missed?
