this is just a beginners guide to the cups suit - i won't go into imagery, color use, etc. these are key phrases that come to mind when i think of the cards - NOT how they should be directly applied. they needs to be thought about situationally and the cards / when they are in combos they can change or alter their meanings of any reading.

ace of cups (1)

astrological equivalent: cancer jupiter

upright: love offering, self-love, new relationship, love, peace, happiness, emotional fulfillment, renewed enthusiasm, vow renewal, emotional outpour, and pregnancy

reversed: feeling empty, depleted energy, needing self-care, and feeling disappointed

two of cups (2)

astrological equivalent: cancer venus

upright: shared feelings, mutual attraction, deep feelings, nurturing, equal give-and-take, new relationship, love, emotional fulfillment, new partnership, and generosity

reversed: imbalanced relationship, new/pending breakup, pain, difficulty, needing to say "no", and needing to create space

three of cups (3)

astrological equivalent: pisces mercury

upright: fun, playful, needing to spend time with friends/family, stress relief, a feeling of expansiveness, joyousness, feeling uplifted, collaboration, and teamwork

queen of cups

astrological equivalent: water & water

upright: feminine love, nurturing, protective, intense emotions, others influencing your emotions, and needing to nurture yourself

reversed: jealousy, envy, suspicions, feeling cautious, being open about feelings without fearing rejection/judgment, and being proven untrustworthy

king of cups

astrological equivalent: water & fire

upright: masculine taking initiative, compassion, quality of empathy, emotional intelligence, maintaining boundaries, and remaining mindful

reversed: shaky boundaries, emotional instability, might need to dig deeper, doubting your own abilities, looking to others for guidance, confusing communication, hurt feelings, feeling rejected by other, and trying to not take things personally

So, I've been watching Hazbin Hotel, and Helluva Boss.

Loved it. Therefore, obviously, to none of my friends' surprise, I added the fandom in that nonsensical tarot project of mine- and it starts with Lucifer, the short king himself, as the Five of Cups.

(The Devil was already taken, which both caused me immense amont of dismay, and just as much relief, because that version of Lucifer does NOT fit the Devil card as much as he could.)

Now, under the cut (only for the braves who can handle a long post spoken in broken english), the mandatory explanation for the choice of the card and the composition.

A joyous card, isn't it! Ahah? Totally. Let's get right into it.

The Five of Cups, Upright, often appears in a reading when a situation hasn't turned out the way you expected, leaving you sad, regretful and disappointed. I mean, you just gave one (1) apple to humanity, just to give them free will, and look what they did with it! What the hell, literally! You are blaming yourself, and instead of moving on with your life (despite the small inconvenience of being banished to an endless pit of evil and horror), you ar choosing to wallow in your self-pity. All you can focus on right now is what went wrong and how you failed. You're stuck in the past, and you can't let go; old wounds you never closed are keeping you from trying to create some positive changes. Which is why the card is here: to help you forgive. Forgiveness, to others and to yourself, is the only way you'll be able to release yourself from your sadness and disappointment. Remember that foresight and wisdom in the present moments comes from mistakes of the past: reflect on what led you to this point, and try to find something positive by reflecting on the lessons learned. You can rebuilt, you still can challenge an unfair system, despite everything! New possibilities are waiting for you, as shown by your daughter. You just have to be ready to accept it. Shift your mindset and focus on what can go right from this point forward.

Reversed, the card suggests that you might look at yourself specifically as a failure. You are stuck in a loop of self-loathing, and can't bring yourself to open up to others about those feelings. The reversed Five of Cups card is here to encourage you to open up: people around you may not see how much pain you're in right now, so don't be afraid to ask for help or talk to someone you trust.

You cannot undo the past, and just as Lucifer at the end of the first season, you are starting to accept that. You are slowly discovering how to be open to the new opportunities and ideas shown to you; you are finally starting to be more hopeful anout the future. You may not be fully okay again, you might still be in pain, but you are taking the first step: the card encourage you to keep doing so. Focus on the bright side. Not all is lost!

Lot of talks already, so I'll quickly go over those. The cups (that I spend too long on for such a small detail in the whole piece agh agh) are, as I drew them, a symbols of the regrets and the remorses felt. The regrets are the titled, broken cups: Lucifer's marriage, his relation with his daughter, and the dreams he had as an angel. Three things that feels like they are lost, damaged beyond repairs- but that are, in fact, still within reach. The content hasn't even spill yet. The remorses are the acts that can't be undone, and the effect on the vision he has of himself- the bitten apple, and the beastly devil that can't be trust. Those are te things he keeps blaming himself for, and the source of the self-loathing he's stuck into. But! He's turning his back on them, as a way to show he is not as linked to those things as he thinks he is. One is a thing of the past, the other is merely a shadow of who he is- what's important is what lays in front of him.

Mourning The Five of Chalices represents a substantial personal upset or loss and intense emotional regret. Sailor Saturn’s emergence and the Deadly Silence Glaive signal a time of mourning. Five of Cups & FE3H

The Five of Cups showcases the mess that is left over after a huge upheaval. As usual, the Five card in the minor arcana shows us the worst-case scenario of the suit, and for Cups, it’s the loss of friendships and emotional well-being. The Five of Cups can reference intergenerational trauma, or consequences that spill beyond what one thought they could affect. However, a glimmer of hope prevails, as two cups remain unspilled, reminding us that not all is lost even when it appears that way. 

For me, Seteth’s loss of Flayn and his wife encapsulates the mood of this card. Due to his own carelessness, he lost the two people he cared about the most, and likely watched their blood spill. This event had a great impact on him, as he left Rhea to tend to the continent by herself and retreated to watch over Flayn. 

However, not all is lost, and he does find a way back to Garreg Mach to both support Rhea and to give Flayn a second chance at life, giving him an opportunity to be thankful for the cups that remain in his life.

In retrospect, I think Catherine might also be a good fit for this card, as she lost Christophe and her entire Kingdom connections. So do with that knowledge what you will.

carrying on from the not-super-positive message of the four, the five of cups is a card about sadness, grief, regret, loss, and despair. yikes. as always with the tarot though, there are so many ways you can interpret this card, and they are definitely not all literal. perhaps you feel a disconnect from your own emotions that leaves you feeling sad or just out of it. this card can also be a reminder to tend to your relationships so as to avoid the disappointment and loneliness that the five of cups might suggest. on the emotions side, the five can be indicative of emotional upheaval and/or emotional baggage, so it's always worth examining your relationship to your own feelings as well
