In the 1920s and 1930s, this is how you enjoyed your cup of tea! ☀️ Bright light back then didn’t always necessarily have to come in the form of a lamp or a candle - it could could from your cup too. Thanks to an iridescent glaze that was especially good at reflecting light, it was an ancient art form that experienced a bit of a revival in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This special ultra shiny glaze was known as lustreware and can be traced back to artisans in Mesopotamia in the 9th century. Enhancing whatever color it was applied to, this glaze added an extra dose of eye catching shimmer and glimmer that attracted light and helped bounce it around the room. In the teacups here, you can see it reflecting light in the blue grey bands but scroll through the following photos and you’ll see a rainbow of dazzling shades. I’m always partial to the green and peach varieties but really any dish that wants to light up the room with the colors of the sun is fine by me:) The teacups are from my personal collection but all the other items featured here can be found in the shop! . . . . . #lustreware #reflectinglight #lusterware #vintageteacups #antiquevases #antiquedishes #potteryglaze #collecting #colorfulhome #brightdecor #victorianera #floralkitchen #ceramicglaze https://www.instagram.com/p/CDMfFmiJ5Tr/?igshid=1hb5i4lwseut3

As much as this one is trying to look cute, it’s not. Like an annoying, cloying woman-child you want to shake and yell “grow up!” to. These flowers, especially surrounded by the hideous, dark-stained wood grain backsplash, and the creeping dinge of the linoleum flooring and dark-edged appliance, portend horror. I see this kitchen and I think Charles Manson and his family of brainwashed chicks.

One of the prettiest aspects of dishware patterns from the 1920's and the 1930's is the cheerful use of bright orange and spring green color combinations. After those two decades, orange wouldn't come back into popularity again until the 1970's, which is a shame because its such a lively and complimentary color to most foods. This rare gravy boat, teetering on its antique years, was made in England by W.H. Grindley and features hand-painted nasturtium flowers in the bright and bold shades of orange and yellow. Styled in the Grindley shape, Chelsea Ivory, it also features a unique handpainted handle with a heart-shaped cutout. Throughout its years of use, it has developed gorgeous crazing lines and staining that offer another interesting layer of visual storytelling and speculation about just where exactly this gravy boat has traveled throughout its life. Wouldn't it be fun if we could track a piece like this, throughout its entire length of life, beginning with its creation in England in the 1920s? What adventures it must have had! Read more about it in the shop! . . . . . #1920skitchen #gravyboat #nasturtium #orangefloral #grindley #stokeontrent #floralkitchen #1930skitchen #vintageengland #englishchina #orangeflowers #fortheloveofflowers https://www.instagram.com/p/CC1NnK7p9Yy/?igshid=11jkvohn3lvz0

Channeling my inner Anne Shirley, I’d like to call this vintage piece of kitchenware The Dish That Baked A Thousand Pies. Considering it dates to the 1930’s, I think it’s pretty accurate. ♥️ Just imagine how many desserts this beauty has seen over the past 90 years. That would be pies galore... Lemon Chiffon, Chocolate Ice Box, Vanilla Silk, Coconut Cream, Strawberry Meringue, Candied Sweet Potato, all the fruits and all the nuts. Not to mention all the holidays and all the celebrations and all the desserty day to days ... oh the baking adventures! She’s also seen every development in the kitchen since refrigerators became household staples. In the oven, out of the oven. In the icebox, out of the fridge. On the counter, in the pie safe. At the the table, on the windowsill. Hand washed, machine washed. Cupboard stored, cabinet displayed. Passed along, tucked away. That’s what 90 years and a love of baking brings. I hope she gets to see 90 more:) Read more about her in the shop. . . . . . #piedish #vintagebaking #vintagepiedish #1930skitchen #bakinglove #weathered #pielovers #pie #baking #90years #floralkitchen https://www.instagram.com/p/CBlUtx-AGJL/?igshid=1tp35a2px8j31
