#Flowers for Algernon

I remember studying Flowers for Algernon at school, and what a huge impact it had on me. How dreadful, I thought, to know your intelligence is slipping away and being unable to prevent it. The horror you must feel.

And now, as I sit here with my multiple chronic illnesses that cause various types of cognitive impairment, watching my ability to think, plan, create, follow instructions, find the write words and form complete sentences slip away like grains of sand through my fingers, I know what that horror feels like.

So I looked up Flowers for Algernon, to see if I could find any quotes, find out if I was misremembering it, inflating it in my mind into something grander than it was.

I was not.

The quotes are still emotionally devastating.

"I'm not going to give up my intelligence without a struggle. I can't go back down into that cave. There's no place for me to go now"

“It was as if I had been looking at the whole thing clearly on the blackboard of my mind, but when I turned to read it, part of it had been erased and the rest didn’t make sense.”

"The only question now is: How much can I hang on to?."

"But writing is harder. I have to look up even simple words in the dictionary now and it makes me angry with myself.”

Excuse me while I weep for a while for what I've lost.

i’m not over how some people refer to Flowers for Algernon as just the sad mouse book when the entire thing is about the struggle of a man with a mental disability trying to become smarter (or Normal) because his entire life he has been viewed as less than human by nearly everyone around him, or if he’s seen as human at all, he’s seen as a child.

sometimes people don’t even remember his name.

So my baby's sisters absolute favourite book is Flowers For Algernon and I'm pretty okay at binding books so for Xmas I'm giving her a cool rebound version.

But here's the thing. It's a journal, right? And she loves when shit feels real you know like when books set in the 1800s have yellowed pages and those rough edges and shit. So I got it into my head that I'm going to actually write it out by hand, with the handwriting style reflecting the mastery of language that changes throughout the story (i.e. blocky and rudimentary at first, evolving into quicker possibly cursive as he learns, then blocky again but shaky at the end). I'm doing the short version bc I love my sister but not enough to handwrite 200 pages in different fonts.

So anyways this is a Project so anyone who sees this do me a favor and yell at me to work on it so it actually gets done this year lol.

I’ll never get over the part in Flowers for Algernon where Charlie realises that he’s being made fun of. He bites into a (fake, wax) apple given to him by a woman, realises the truth and feels “shame” for the first time. By undergoing this surgery, he ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Of course he’s going to die.
