FOTD #135 : red-belted conk! (fomitopsis pinicola)

the red-belted conk is a polypore fungus in the family fomitopsidaceae :-) it is common throughout temperate zones in europe & asia. it produces brown rot & often parasitises rainforest trees.

the big question : can i bite it?? nah, it's inedible !!

f. pinicola description :

"the cap is hoof-shaped or triangular, & sometimes shelflike. it is hard & tough, & up to 30 cm or more across & 15 cm thick. its surface is more or less smooth, at first orange-yellow with a white margin, later dark reddish to brown & then frequently with an orange margin. the pore surface is pale yellow to leather-brown, 3–4 pores per mm."

inspired by this post here are all my polypore/conk/conk like mushrooms

this is all of them, 15 centimeter ruler for size reference. they’re shipped here all the way from ukraine right before war started so these mushrooms very well traveled. these are a variety of very similar looking mushrooms, i identified them all by myself so may be wrong sorry

^ ones like these are hoof fungus/tinder mushrooms (Fomes fomentarius). half/most of these probably this type or a mix between hoof/tinder mushroom (this one) and artist’s conk, idk the two looks very similar.

the two unique ones!! the top one is willow bracket mushrooms (Phellinus igniarius) and the bottom one is red belted polypore/conk (Fomitopsis pinicola).

i want to put them up on wall but don’t know how because need to worry about not damage the back of the mushrooms + secure on wall + without damage wall either.

Dat ward langsåm Tied, dat ik ein’ Fuurtsettung schrief. de Exkursion was schon vorlest’ Wäk, œwer laten wi uns von dor nich kümmern. de Exkursion was natürlich superinteressant! Tauierst güng dat tau’n Starnberger See. Wo irtäuft, was dat sihr prächtich! Dornå güngen wecke von uns tau’n Ammerdål bi den Kalktuffquellen. An den Dach sniedete dat bannig! Leider däuchte de Snei de anner Dåch’ wech. 

Doch gåhn wi taurüch tau’n Exkursionen. An den See wieren Wintervœgel tau irtäuwen. Åpenbor kåmen de ganzen Wintergäst, also de ganzen Wintervœgel, ofteins ut (natürlich) Skandinavien un Nuurdrussland. Uns säd man, dat de russischen Vœgel schuucher wieren, wiel sei öfter schåten warden. Nu verståh ik ok, wurüm määnigein Reigerånten (Aythya fuligula) ihr wechswimmen. Man wi wieren ihrer up de Säuk nach Prachtdukers (Gavia arctica). Dat was ierst tämlich swor, denn de Daukers swimmen meist in de Midd von den See. Datau sünd sei in den Winterkleed. Liekers künnen wi wat såhn. Einmal liekers verwesselt ik einen Prachtduker mit einen Meerråben (Phalacrocorax carbo). De sünd etwa gliek grot, doch de Meerråb höllt sienen Kopp hoch un Snåwel hett einen Håken, wieldäm bi den Dukers hei spitz un ein bit dicker is. Reigerånten geef dat wunnerlichwies nich so väl’. Ein paar Grau Ånten (Anas platyrhynchos) wieren doch ok. Ok flögen Såchdukers (Mergus merganser) vorbi. Ein sall nich vergäten de Füerduker (Podiceps cristatus) und sogor nich wenige Brilldukers (Bucephala clangula). In de Fiern såhn wi ein Schittreiger (Ardea cinerea). 

Nach ein Middachpaus güng dat tau’n Ammerdål, wat ein Schuttgebeet is. Dank den Kommilitonen heff ick lihrt, wat ein Rotrandig Bomswamm (Fomitopsis pinicola) is, de schon sihr jichtenwo der Tünnerswamm (Fomes fomentarius) utsüht. Œwer wat sihr snåksch was, was ein Rup von de Graskluck (Euthrix potatoria) und ein Streckerspinne (Tetragnatha sp.) midden in’n Snei! Ach, dat geef ok Wåtermuss und Wåterminz (Mentha aquatica). Man irtäuft ein blot den Muss unner Wåter un dat dortau in’n Winter, man beide wieren unner Wåter…. in’n Winter. Un natürlich geef’t dor Vœgel: den Rotböster (Erithacus rubecula), den Turmfalk (Falco tinnunculus) un ein Schwarm von Ellerziesken (Spinus spinus). Un in de Ammer, der lütte Strom, wieren bannig Insektenlarven, meist von Maifleigen (Ephemroptera, Ecdyonurus sp.) un ok von Kriebelmüggen (Simuliidae), den Rest heff ik lieder schon vergäten…. Ach ja, wi segen ok tämlich väl’ Bäverdieken (Castor fiber).

Dat was för hüt, ik hoff dat hat juuch gefreut. Bis tau’n anner Mal!
