DETROIT (AP) — Thieves are using cloned key fobs to steal Dodge muscle cars and other high-powered vehicles directly from dealerships and even automakers in Michigan, then selling them for tens of thousands of dollars less than their value, according to authorities and court records.

For one Ohio-based theft ring, it all came crashing down after a January holdup of a U.S. postal worker led authorities to connect several men to brazen car thefts in the Detroit area, long home to the country's biggest automakers, including Dodge, which is now owned by international conglomerate Stellantis.

Investigators then discovered that new Chargers, Challengers, Durangos and Ram pickups worth $50,000 to $100,000 were turning up in Ohio, Indianapolis and East Coast shipping ports after being sold on the street for $3,500 to $15,000, according to a criminal complaint.

Thieves in the Detroit area are primarily going after Dodge vehicles with Hellcat engines, including Chargers and Challengers — "the fast ones," Sgt. Jerry Hanna with the Macomb Auto Theft Squad said.

"If a patrol car gets them, they are not stopping and they're faster than patrol cars. They're 150 mph all day," he said.

Instead of stealing them off the street, they're driving them straight off dealership and assembly plant lots.

Just this year, about a half-dozen vehicles — primarily Dodge Ram TRX pickups — were taken from a lot outside an assembly plant in Macomb County.

After security measures were stepped up at some lots with Dodge vehicles, more than a dozen 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor pickup trucks were swiped from a plant lot in June in suburban Dearborn. More than a dozen Ford Mustangs were stolen in early September from the automaker's assembly plant in Flat Rock, southeast of Detroit.

Thieves have targeted Dodges by using handheld electronic "pro pads" — a locksmith's tool that can clone keys by plugging into interior ports in the vehicles, according to the federal complaint in the Ohio case.

Authorities weren't looking for stolen vehicles when they stopped Devin Rice on Jan. 31 after a postal worker in Shaker Heights, outside Cleveland, was robbed at gunpoint of a mailbox key. But court records show that a search of his car and then his home turned up not just stolen mail, bogus checks, and credit and debit cards, but also a Ram pickup, a Range Rover SUV and a Dodge with a Hellcat engine — all stolen.

Rice and others were indicted in federal court in Ohio in June. Jaylen Harris, Lavelle Jones and Hakim Benjamin are charged with conspiracy and interstate transport of stolen vehicles. Rice, Harris and Jones also are charged with mail theft. Their trials are scheduled next year.

Harris' attorney declined comment. The AP left email and phone messages seeking comment from attorneys for Benjamin, Rice and Jones.

Harris told the FBI that he and Jones had been in contact through Instagram with people in the Detroit area to get stolen vehicles, according to the complaint. Harris said those thieves "were also selling to buyers in other areas, including Chicago and Indianapolis," the complaint said.

Videos posted on social media show how the high-horsepower vehicles outpaced and evaded police.

A judge stated in a detention order that "Benjamin drove a 2022 Dodge Challenger valued at $95,000 at 120 mph down Ohio's State Route 2 on a Sunday evening in February."

"Spike strips were eventually needed to remind Benjamin that the law required him to comply with police orders" the judge wrote.

About two years ago, police in Ohio's Ottawa County began noticing the vehicles blasting along state Route 2. The sheriff's office got calls about reckless driving, Capt. Aaron Leist said.

"These cars are going 140-150 mph. All have the Hellcat engines. We had a lot of pursuits. We did not catch them all," he said.

Investigators learned the vehicles mostly were being stolen in the Detroit area and taken to Cleveland. Some also were destined for Memphis, Tennessee, Leist said.

"We started working with (Stellantis) in early 2022," he said. "They would call us and tell us `We have these cars missing.'"

A spokeswoman for Stellantis declined to comment.

Added security measures at some lots have included concrete barriers, according to law enforcement.

Then last fall, a dealership's showroom northwest of Detroit was broken into. Someone drove a Ram pickup through the building's glass wall and "all the other cars followed suit," said Jeff Schneider, general manager at Szott Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Highland Township.

"I think they were able to find some keys in a desk drawer and used them," he added.

Police tracked one of the stolen cars, a Durango Hellcat SRT valued at about $100,000, to a suburb northwest of Detroit. The driver had crashed into a brick wall while fleeing. A 2021 Dodge Durango GT, 2021 Dodge Ram TRX and a 2017 Dodge Charger Hellcat SRT were later recovered.

Authorities arrested four people. They were not believed to have stolen the vehicles, but to have paid $5,000 for one.

"In the Detroit area they are selling them for like $3,500," Hanna said. "Once they get that money in their pockets they go out and steal another one."

For dealerships and their insurance companies, the cost is high. Even recovered vehicles can't be sold for what they were once worth.

Schneider said his dealership came up with an "old school" solution: parking boots.

"It's a deterrent that works amazingly," he said. "We put boots on all the Hellcats."

Twisted Metal: Dropout

Lore/Plot: As a new Twisted Metal contest was about to occur around 2020 by the infamous Calypso, he was tracked down and was captured by the FBI. Now one knows what has ever happened to Calypso, with some believing he’s still alive out there or is possibly dead. Society went back to its usual routine; especially in the small town of Hell, Michigan. That was until an unruly student named Kendric at a university was finally expelled after he was let go from jail for grand theft auto and selling stolen vehicle parts. He moves to an underground tunnel that lead to an open area that had some kind of large man-made home. Surprised that it had running water and energy, he decided to live in it. As days went on, Kendric was wondering around to see what else he could find in the underground. He stumbles upon “Roadkill”, one of the vehicles that were once used for the infamous Twisted Metal tournament. He takes it for a test drive and surprisingly it still has power in it, but he notices some damage to it as if something was removed roughly. Just as Kendric parks “Roadkill” near his home, he notices that the door was open and he pulls out his pocket knife in case of a conflict. Turns out it was another college student he recognizes, the student was Jay. Jay was once a successful student from the university, until he family became homeless and broke after a violent robbery. This event lead to Jay having no other choice but to dropout. Kendric decides to let him stay, but only if Jay doesn’t gossip about the area the two are living in. As the new year arrives, Kendric decides to secretly bring some girls down for a party he threw; which brought the attention of two rival jocks, Zale and Braylon. The two charge down and they challenged Kendric to a couple of games, which Kendric had an idea and who introduced the two newly discovered vehicles for a drift race. “Spectre” for Zale and “Crimson Fury” for Braylon. Kendric decides to use “Roadkill” for the race, to which the begin the drift race throughout the underground and Kendric took the victory. The two were astonished by Kendric slick personality, especially towards those that “follow” him. The more “dropouts” came along, they were assigned newly discovered vehicles that were used, but Kendric came to the realization that the reason why all of the vehicles had some kind of damage was that all of them had their weapons removed due to safety precautions to the public. Since Kendric and the small growing club don’t have access to such weaponry, Kendric would mainly due car bashing and drift race events and give the winner their desired prize of their choice. Twelve “dropouts” live with Kendric, usually have their own shenanigans that would lead to small rivalries and them using there vehicles for rival battles or in some cases, take them out in the open for a ride across the small town. This of course would get Kendric annoyed since he has been trying to keep these hidden or else he would get caught once again and end up in jail again or worse, entering prison.

Ford Bronco Raptor Plug & Play Tuning Box Gains 70hp - Video Inside!

The Ford Bronco Raptor is the beast of the offroad machine we have all been waiting for since the 6th generation Bronco was reintroduced. With its 418hp 3.0L twin turbo Ecoboost engine, this is screaming to be touched and unleash its hidden potential. With an entire line of Plug and Play tuning box kits available for turbocharged cars, trucks, and SUVs, one of VR Tuned most successful sales product has been for the Ford Bronco 2.7L Ecoboost. Well now its time for the Bronco Raptor 3.0L Ecoboost to choice in with the gains!

Being lucky enough to have the Ford Bronco Raptor here at Vivid Racing, we were able to strap this thing down to our Mustang Dyno and see what it made stock. Once we got our baseline test of around 334 rear wheel horsepower, we could start the development of the tuning box map. The tuning boxes are universal and get preprogrammed to the customers vehicle before they are shipped. And the harness for the Ford Bronco Raptor is one already available as its used in the Bronco 2.7L as well as the Ford F-150 3.5L Ecoboost engine. Connecting the harness to the Manifold Pressure and Boost Pressure sensor is all it takes to bring this live. The sensors are very easy to access with one being right in front of the throttle body and the other just under the intake tube that goes across the top of the engine. With a 10mm socket just remove a metal bracket to gain access to this sensor.

Utilizing our logging device we were able to test different settings of some base maps that are then preset for the tuning box to be in a safe range for 91-93 octane. Once we were happy with the tweaks made, we were able to complete our after runs to compare to our baseline test. Using setting 6 on the tuning box which is preferred, we saw some pretty strong gains throughout the entire midrange. Both horsepower and torque picked up about 50 to the wheels (70-80 to the crank). Power can be measured to the crank which is standard HP or to the wheels which is RWHP. Dyno graphs will show RWHP. So when Ford says the vehicle makes 418HP, in actuality, on our Mustang Dyno with 91octane and our warm ambient temperature of 90F here in Arizona, we saw about a 20% drivetrain loss giving 334rwhp. But with the tuning box we achieved about 380rwhp. That puts this Bronco Raptor at 480HP to the crank!

The tuning box found a neat home to be mounted right behind the passenger side intake box. Because this is a plug and play device, it can easily be removed for major warranty purposes should you choose to do so. There is not trace or record to the ECU since we are not altering the ECU parameters directly. The best part is the entire kit is Bluetooth operated via an IOS or Android app.

In Canada, one man detailed how these vehicles were the greatest scam of the modern era, given the $130,000-plus investment he sunk into this cockamamie lefty idea. When the EV line costs your company billions, maybe that’s a sign that this goes beyond overhead and research costs—customers don’t want it. These cars' batteries also need to be charged for what seems like every other hour. Second, you need to upgrade your grid and install charging stations at your home and place of employment. That expense soars into the tens of thousands on top of the overpriced and laughably unreliable vehicle whose battery life is halved when it gets colder.
