Reading through propaganda and trying to parse fact from fiction is an exhausting process. You have to sift through material that is intentionally trying to gaslight you, while also investigating the claims it makes, and the people making them.
Right now I'm working on two posts by a man named Sergey Faldin, one on the Guardian, the other on Substack.
But it's not enough to just read these two posts. I've never heard of Faldin before, so that means looking into him to see what he's about. Where does he live? What does he do? How does he make his money?
It seems like he's employed by Meduza, a Russian-language publication based in Riga, Latvia and founded by Galina Timchenko, who was fired from the Russia news outlet Lenta for publishing an interview with a representative from the Ukrainian Neo-Nazi coalition Right Sector, apparently because in the interview the Nazi called for a Chechen leader to strike against Russia. Meduza takes a pro-Ukraine stance on the current conflict. What makes me suspicious of Galina, and by extension Meduza, is how Western propaganda outlets took up her cause after she was fired. Meduza is at least partially supported by Reporters Without Borders, which hosts its English Language site. Reporters Without Borders is funded in part by the National Endowment for Democracy and the Ford Foundation, both NGOs which support the US government's foreign policies.
In his Guardian article, Faldin mentions the incident of Grigory Yudin, a peace protestor that was apparently beaten by police for opposing the war in Ukraine.
Yudin is an author with some articles published at openDemocracy, which is also funded in part by the Ford Foundation.
Is this proof positive of some kind of conspiracy? I doubt it. These tenuous links to US think tanks are hardly smoking guns, though I do find it all intensely suspicious.

“It must be said that CORE [Congress for Racial Equality] was vulnerable to such corporate penetration. In the first place, they needed money. Floyd McKissick in 1966 had become national director of an organization which was several hundred thousand dollars in debt, and espousal of black power scared away potential financial supporters.
“Second, CORE’s militant rhetoric but ambiguous and reformist definition of black power as simply black control of black communities appealed to Foundation officials who were seeking just those qualities in a black organization which hopefully could tame the ghettos. From the Foundation’s point of view, old-style moderate leaders no longer exercised any real control, while genuine black radicals were too dangerous. CORE fit the bill because its talk about black revolution was believed to appeal to discontented blacks, while its program of achieving black power through massive injections of governmental, business, and Foundation aid seemingly opened the way for continued corporate domination of black communities by means of a new black elite.”
—from “Black Awakening in Capitalist America” by Robert L. Allen. 1969. As reprinted in The Revolution Will Not Be Funded.

Heres a fun little idea: a gravity falls SCP AU
The plot would be relatively the same except all the monsters, including Bill, are just escaped scps.
After moving to gravity falls, Ford started documenting his findings in journal one. The foundation noticed him and invited him to work as a scientist. Ford accepts and continues documenting the other scps as well as catching some of those that escaped (Shmebulock).
Fiddledford, still ford's college roommate, also happens to move with Ford to Gravity Falls. The foundation notices his genius and recruit him as well.
They eventually meet Bill, an scp so powerful he's been closed off from the others. Neither of them know about him yet since the foundation completely closed him off. Not even the most experienced researchers are allowed. Just like in the show, Bill flatters them and persuades them to set him free.
Fiddledford eventually sees something he shouldn't, just like in the show. He tries to convince Ford this isn't a good idea, but Ford doesn't listen. So Fiddleford quits and invents the memory gun before starting to use it on himself.
Ford sets Bill free but discovers why the foundation kept him locked away. Luckily, Bill is weak and can't use the full potential of his powers yet. Unluckily, he goes into hiding. And he's good at it. Ford hides in his shack and calls his brother for help
When Stan arrives, Ford does little to nothing to explain what's going on or why. Ford disappears, leaving Stan with his first journal which has some mentions to the scp near the final pages.
Stan, not being an idiot, quickly learns something is wrong with this town. He learns what he can through Fords journal, but he doesn't have all the answers to his questions since the other two journals are hidden. He still tries to do what he can to bring his brother back.
From then on, it's still the same. A few changes here and there and maybe accidentally stumbling upon a now abandoned acp foundation facility during that one episode with the shape-shifter. The time baby and blendin are still involved
I'd love to see someone write this

Tumblr media
THE HUMAN BEAST / LA BÊTE HUMAINE
1:30, 5:30, 9:30 PM
In the 1930s, Jean Gabin brought a gallery of doomed anti-heroes to life with a blend of poetic fatalism and blunt proletarian defiance, becoming the first global icon of the noir spirit. He personally selected Jean Renoir, after their collaboration on the classic La Grande Illusion (1937), to direct La bête humaine, adapted from a novel by Émile Zola. Untrammeled by Hollywood censorship, they stayed true to Zola’s disturbing conception of Gabin’s character: a decent working-class man whose “hereditary flaw” causes violent psychotic episodes, mostly aimed at women. When he falls in love with the wife of a railway official (Simone Simon), herself damaged by a history of abuse and exploitation, they are on track for inevitable tragedy. Renoir gives the film a gritty, neorealist flavor (Gabin, a train enthusiast, learned to drive a locomotive for his role) and instills the bleak story with unsentimental empathy.
In French with English subtitles
FRANCE (1938) Dir. Jean Renoir. 100 min.
Tumblr media
HUMAN DESIRE
3:30, 7:30 PM
Following the popular success of 1953's The Big Heat, Columbia Pictures reteamed Glenn Ford and Gloria Grahame with director Fritz Lang for this Americanized adaptation of Le bête humaine, smuggling the sordid tale of adultery and murder past the censors. Gloria Grahame gives a bruised and beleaguered performance as the abused woman who wonders if murdering her loutish husband (Broderick Crawford) is the only way out of her domestic hell. DP Burnett Guffey adds noir panache to Lang's cruel and suffocating depiction of the eternal noir triangle.
UNITED STATES (1954) Dir. by Fritz Lang. 91 min.

A biomedical engineer pivots from human movement to women’s health
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Watching her uncle play a video game when she was a small child started Shaniel Bowen on her path to becoming a biomedical engineer. The game, “Metal Gear Solid 2,” introduced her to exoskeletons, wearable devices that enhance physical abilities.
“The game piqued my interest when it started showing and discussing exoskeletons,” Bowen says. “I went to the library soon after to learn more about it. That was when I first learned about biomedical engineering and became interested in pursuing it as a profession.”
Fast-forward to her senior year at the University of Connecticut. Bowen and an interdisciplinary team of biomedical, electrical, and computer engineers developed a device using musculoskeletal modeling and computer-aided design that could help people with leg weakness to stand. The system provided just enough assistance that the person would still use their own muscles, strengthening them with repeated use. Bowen was on her way to creating her own exoskeleton.
That changed, however, when she was starting graduate school and was diagnosed with ovarian torsion caused by a large ovarian teratoma.
Not only was she dealing with a serious medical condition, but as a Black woman raised by Jamaican immigrants, she was personally confronted with inequities in health care that result in discrepancies in treatment.
“Like many Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) women, I was initially apprehensive and discouraged from seeking medical care for a long time, which led me to trivialize my symptoms,” Bowen says. “A serious gynecological condition that required surgery was almost left untreated.”
After her surgery, Bowen pivoted from her work in human movement and biodynamics to biomedical engineering focused on women’s health.
“I became interested in applying my engineering expertise to women’s health issues in order to gain a better understanding of various pathologies from a biomechanics perspective and to bring awareness not only to individuals in my field but also to women who suffer from or may be at risk for these conditions,” she says.
During her doctoral program, Bowen studied the effects of age and pelvic reconstructive surgery on female pelvic anatomy and function using computational modeling. She received a Ford Foundation Fellowship from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to study the biomechanical processes involved in pelvic organ prolapse (POP), a common condition that can cause extreme discomfort, sexual dysfunction, and incontinence. POP can be surgically corrected, but the repair often fails within five years, and it is unclear exactly why. Bowen’s research set out to develop a tool to better assess the biomechanics of such failures and to prevent them.
“It is hoped that our findings, based on postoperative imaging and clinical data, will encourage longitudinal trials and studies that incorporate both clinical and engineering approaches to better understand POP surgeries and pelvic floor function and dysfunction following pelvic reconstructive procedures,” she says.
After earning her PhD at the University of Pittsburgh, Bowen received multiple offers to do postdoctoral research. She chose the MIT School of Engineering’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Engineering Excellence and started work in the Edelman Lab in September 2023.
“The program and my principal investigators were the most supportive of me exploring my research interests in women’s sexual anatomy and health,” she says, “and learning experimental methods from the ground up, given that my primary experience is computational.”
Elazer Edelman, the Edward J. Poitras Professor in Medical Engineering and Science, director of MIT’s Institute for Medical Engineering and Science, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and senior attending physician in the coronary care unit at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, speaks admiringly of Bowen and her research.
“I love working with and learning from Shaniel — she is an inspiration and creative spirit who is treading in new spaces and has the potential to add to what we know of health and physiology and change our practice of medicine,” says Edelman.
The Edelman Lab was “one of the few,” Bowen says she found “with a longstanding commitment to public outreach,” which has been a consistent endeavor throughout her academic career.
For nearly 10 years, Bowen has volunteered in mentoring and STEM outreach programs for students of all ages — including at her old high school, at the universities she has attended, and in underserved communities. Currently, Bowen devotes a portion of her time to outreach, health promotion, and education, primarily focusing on women’s health issues.
“My research collaborators and I have worked toward removing the stigma and misconceptions around women’s anatomy and health,” she says, explaining that helping young women from underserved communities to be more comfortable with and better informed about women’s anatomy and health is “integral to health equity and inclusion.” Such work also encourages young women to consider careers in STEM and women’s health, she says.
“It is imperative that women of diverse experiences and perspectives get involved in STEM to develop the next generation of scientists and advocates to improve the treatment of health conditions for all women.”
Part of Bowen’s postdoctoral research involves complementing her computational abilities by acquiring and improving her skills in biochemistry and cell biology, and tissue mechanics and engineering. Her current work on how clitoral anatomy relates to sexual function, especially after gynecological surgery, explores a topic that has seen little research, Bowen says, adding that her work could improve postoperative sexual function outcomes.
The MIT Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Engineering Excellence — which, while emphasizing research, also provides resources and helps fellows to build a professional network — has provided an excellent system of support, Bowen says.
“It has really helped me learn and explore different career paths while having a great support system of fellows and staff that have provided continued motivation and life advice throughout the ups and downs of navigating through my postdoctoral training and job search,” she says.

Who was Henry H. Hurt?
Tumblr media
— From a Moonie pamphlet
Henry H. Hurt—Maryland insurance agent, 76, longstanding follower of Reverend Sun Myung Moon, admitted to the Wall Street Journal (February 3, 1982) that he fronted for the Moon-owned U.S. Foods Corporation in McLean, Virginia. In a November 18, 1976 letter to Moon's closest associate, Colonel Bo Hi Pak, published in a congressional report, Hurt wrote, "The Leader [Moon] is the spiritual and financial strength." Still a board member of the Moon front group, the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation, Inc., Hurt told CAIB he is "an enthusiastic supporter" of [Accuracy in Media]. He also said that in past years, he has given "hundreds of thousands" of dollars to various conservative organizations.
—Accuracy in Media Rewrites the News and History By Louis Wolf (CovertAction Information Bulletin, Number 21)
One year later, Miss Young Oon Kim sent me as a pioneer to Baltimore, Maryland, where one of my spiritual children lived. After 40 days, another member joined me there, and soon I was able to witness to Henry Hurt, the president of Arthur Ford's group, Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship. He led 12 of his members to hear lectures. However, only he joined. Mrs. Shin Wook "Lady Doctor" Kim moved into the center, when I returned to Washington, D.C., and she nurtured Henry and other Christian leaders. After signing membership and receiving the Marriage Blessing, Henry continued as a trustee at his local Presbyterian church, enduring considerable persecution.
