Theory: Ryuji was popular, before.
I'm not entirely sure if anyone has really talked about this but I maintain my interpretation that, in the canon of Persona 5, Ryuji used to be very (or at least moderately) popular prior to the events of the story.
This is something I've gotten into before when talking to friends who like the game and the character, but I haven't really considered writing it down until now. The main argument I have is based on three things:
Things Ryuji alluded to in canon (but no one believed him on)
The deliberate choice of making him a track athlete
Typecasting for voice actors
1: "There were girls all over me!"
I don't really have the time to go on a deep dive through all the instances in which he hints at his reputation before the Kamoshida incident, but I think the most clear-cut representation of this was during the scene where he and Ann spend the day with Futaba during her post-palace social rehabilitation:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So here's the thing...I don't think he's lying about this. Nobody in the room would be that impressed to find out whether Ryuji was popular since they are already friends (or in Mona's case, he really just doesn't care), so it wouldn't make sense for him to lie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Regarding everyone's reactions though, here's my impression: Ann was simply not aware of what was going on with the track team, being predominantly focused on dealing with rumors, her friendship with Shiho, and her modeling career (and eventually Kamoshida's advances once he started doing that shit) and she mentions a few times that she and Ryuji weren't actually close before joining the PT; they were just in the same class in middle school. Futaba hasn't interacted with anyone her age in years and isn't the most reliable source when it comes to what people generally find attractive; just because she doesn't have any interest in Ryuji doesn't mean that nobody her age would. And Morgana is a cat that brags constantly about how cool he is, so he shouldn't be throwing rocks.
There are many other times in the game when you get little glimpses of his social savvy, and from my understanding of Royal (I'm an OG vanilla P5 player and haven't done 3rd-semester yet, so don't kill me) when the track team returns to "how it was", he is getting along extremely well with everyone. Not only was he the team's ace: this kid was also expected to become the captain by his senior year (as briefly mentioned when he bumps into his former senpai at the gym, iirc). That's huge! If his team held him in such high regard, then the general student body of Shujin surely had a similar opinion. This brings me to my next point:
2: Girls like boys that run fast(???)
This is honestly something that baffles me. It's also really difficult for me to substantiate; any source material on this is obviously in Japanese and if I could find any of it, I sure as hell can't read it. The only English-language source I know of I cannot find anymore; I think it was an old Tofugu article? However. If you've watched any romance anime set in a high school during the last 20 years, you might have seen this trope at some point: the school sports festival is happening, and the relay race is kind of a huge deal (it's the final event! a make-or-break moment for the class!). The boy thinks to himself "If I win this race, I'll be able to win her heart/ask her out/etc." Low-stakes drama ensues. Maybe a confession happens.
This is (from what I've been told) based on a long-standing trend of girls and women self-reporting in surveys about how, oftentimes, their crushes in junior or senior high school were simply "the boy who ran the fastest in the races". I have no idea what this means in a broader cultural context. It makes no goddamn sense to me at all. Do not cite me on this. But I think it's worth keeping in mind, even if it's almost entirely speculative (and possibly outdated) information. And even if it's just based on rumors, don't you think it's pretty in-character for Ryuji to go for a track scholarship—despite being adept at other sports like baseball and football/soccer, as mentioned in P5 and P5D—because he was aware of the potential of being more popular with girls? Of course, his priority would be getting the scholarship and paying his way through school to lighten his mother's burden, but hey, getting a girlfriend on the way up wouldn't be half bad!
I think this could also inform us as to why Kamoshida (as a predator who wanted attention from high school girls) felt so threatened by the track team in particular, and why he felt a need to specifically knock Ryuji down a peg and sought out a weakness to do so (as opposed to targeting any of the probably just-as-popular boys on the many other athletic teams and clubs in the school). Just some food for thought on this one! Also, if anyone can find a source or has any insight on the relay race thing, please share. I am so confused about it.
3: Typecasting
So this is something that you really only notice if you are very into keeping up with seiyuu in Japan. I am not one of those people. But I do have some favorite voice actors! One of these being Mamoru Miyano.
So I freakin' love this dude. He's voiced a lot of my favorite characters, sings incredibly well, and has an unreal sense of comedy. He's stated in interviews that his acting inspiration is Jim Carrey, and let me tell you: it shows. He is also quite consistently typecast into certain roles, predominantly as princely pretty-boy types, Coolguys, or complete fucking nutcases. Sometimes all three at the same time (shoutout to my boy Ling FMA!)
ATLUS definitely cast him for P5 because of his comedic chops. But I think they also cast him because having him voice someone like Ryuji is a great way to subvert expectations for the player. I think it's supposed to give you whiplash—"what do you mean the voice of LIGHT FUCKING YAGAMI is coming out of this guy's mouth?" "why does the delinquent character sound like king of the host club Tamaki Suou?" "isn't that Rin Matsuoka's voice?" etc. etc. etc.
(here's a quick list, just to really get the idea across. maybe you recognize a few.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is obviously a non-comprehensive list, but something that a lot of the characters he's voiced over the years have in common is that they were considered cool, handsome, or popular. Not just for fans, but within the canon of their stories! So...what does that mean? What does that say about how we should see Ryuji?
I think players are supposed to expect that he will fall into one of those categories too, and then be surprised to find that it's not the case—that he's been isolated and made bitter and resigned by what happened to him the year before.
Speaking of his tone, I think it's very telling that Ryuji actually forgets to keep up the delinquent act a lot in the original JP audio, which unfortunately doesn't really carry over in the ENG translation. The delivery of his JP lines sounds a bit more subdued in comparison too—yeah he's got a lot of energy and is very hotheaded, but when he gets to talking about serious shit, he sounds a lot more regretful and melancholy as opposed to the EN delivery which depicts him as more resentful and outwardly angry. I think before Shit Went Down, he probably had the Coolguy vibe. Still a bit of a rowdy idiot and a showoff, but I think he probably came across to most people as a very friendly, sincere, and popular guy.
So yeah, the girls probably were all over him, at least for a short while.

Having an S/O That Doesn’t Get Enough Sleep
Fandom: Persona 5
Characters: Akira Kurusu, Goro Akechi, Ryuji Sakamoto, Yusuke Kitagawa
Type of Request: Headcanons
Warning(s): Slight reference to drugs!!
Notes: So I guess I accidentally deleted the draft of this ask, but good thing I saved it!! It was for a short S/O that doesn't get enough sleep (as the title might've told you).
I can’t remember if an anon asked for this or if someone requested it off anon so I’m sorry that I can’t tag you if it’s the former >.< I hope you still see this!!
Tumblr media
Akechi
Akechi only sleeps because he needs to maintain an appearance for the public. Otherwise he would pull many all-nighters until his goal is accomplished.
Makes it a thing where you better be in bed by the time he is done with work.
He stays up pretty late so if you're not asleep when he gets home then he'll give you the silent treatment and just ignore you.
Has definitely thought about slipping something into your drink to just knock you out for the rest of the night. Just something to help you get to sleep.
Akira
Offers to let you have his cat for a bit. That bastard will help you get to sleep rather you want to or not.
Akira would definitely start a video call with you and just keep talking to you until you fell asleep.
If you're not sleeping fast enough then he'll try using some ASMR triggers on call in hopes that helps.
There’s a few people at school that owe Akira some favors so if you need a quick nap then he’s fine calling them in!
Ryuji
If you're both shujin students and in the same class then he'll cause a commotion so you can get a quick nap in.
Ryuji isn't the best at getting enough sleep either. Heck he might be the reason you don't sleep enough since you two will stay up talking or play video games.
He might suggest you watching him play video games in hopes you fall asleep while he does.
He gets sleepy playing sometimes so hopefully watching him will make you sleepy.
Yusuke
There are many times where he's falling asleep throughout the day because he spent all night painting. You're not alone in being sleep deprived.
Yusuke at least tries to convince you to go to sleep, but he’s the one that tells you “ten more minutes” for himself and that just ends up with neither of you sleeping.
Might try to trick you into posing in a comfy position for him to paint you so you end up falling asleep.
He still paints and might get annoyed if you move in your sleep, but he's able to push that annoyance away because you look peaceful.

a karisuma X is not "a charismatic X"
So while I am often not sure about much regarding my reading of Japanese, lol, there are a few things I am pretty positive of, and this is one of them:
karisuma X does not mean "charismatic X".
That's right. Akechi is not "a charismatic detective" (certainly not the Charismatic Detective). And Kamoshida is certainly not "a charismatic teacher". Akechi is not screaming in the engine room about how charismatic he is, funny as that might be.
It's tricky to find references for this one, because カリスマ karisuma does mean "charisma"; it's a straight loanword from English. That's its primary use, even. But that's not always how it's used.
This article goes into the usage we're talking about:
Charisma is a word that means a strong charm that attracts people's hearts and a person who has that charm.
When you want to express a person who has ability and talent in a specific field and is gaining popularity, you can use expressions such as "[karisuma X]" and "[X no karisuma]". This is the case with the “charismatic hairdresser” [karisuma biyoushi] that helped spread the word in Japan....
As for usage, phrases such as "[karisuma X]" and "charismatic existence" [karisumateki sonzai] are common. It is used when you want to express that [someone has] excellent ability in a certain thing.
Note the use of カリスマ的 karisumateki in that last example. That does mean "charismatic": "having the quality of charisma", "in a charismatic way", "an X which is charismatic".
So what do we call someone like that? Someone who's rapidly gaining popularity in a certain field, for their talents and abilities? Someone whose ability "attracts people's hearts", and becomes known across the nation? Someone like a cute boy detective, or an Olympic gold medallist?
Well, we just say "celebrity". And the usages are pretty close; Gordon Ramsay, for instance, is a カリスマ料理人 karisuma ryourinin—a celebrity chef.
Akechi is a celebrity detective. Kamoshida is a celebrity teacher. They have charisma because of their force of personality and their reputation, but that's not what they are.
And sure, there are other words in Japan for that concept; there are likely specific nuances to the different words that I'm missing here. But for a translation, please don't ever call anyone "a charismatic X". Not unless that's what you really mean to say.
examples
Tumblr media
IDK, that sure sounds like something someone would say on the news to me, what do you think? "This guy has been exposed for all sorts of horrible crimes against the students in his care, let's focus on how charismatic he was"? No way.
Make no mistake: Kamoshida was a celebrity. That's why he brings credit to Shujin. It's part of why he has so much clout; it's part of why Kobayakawa sucks up to him so much. You can hear a radio announcer talk about how they were one of his fans, back in the day when he was in the Olympics; the Aggressive Reporter on Central Square refers to him as "a former star athlete". You can hear passersby talk about how "he was supposed to be a hero".
He was a celebrity. And that's how he's supposed to be described.
"charismatic detective"
Tumblr media
"karisuma tantei" nante iwareteru mi toshite wa—"as the one they're calling a celebrity detective". He's preening about how people have certain expectations of him now; it's not a title that's accrued to him, like "Detective Prince" is. Which is why we never hear it ever again. Or rather, we do:
Tumblr media
We get one use of karisuma meitantei on 11/21—"celebrity ace detective" or "celebrity great detective".
Are you noticing that Akechi is the only one who ever describes himself this way? And even he only does it like twice. It's not a title, is why. It's just a description of his role: a celebrity detective.
And, just like with Kamoshida, it's mistranslated at almost every opportunity. Here's one when, thank God, Jesus, and all the little fishes, it's not:
Tumblr media
I've seen people claim that this is the mistranslation, but no. This is like the one time where, looking back at his previous uses, they actually get it right:
Akechi 俺は名探偵で⋯カリスマだ! ore wa meitantei de... karisuma da! I am an ace detective... A celebrity!
"I'm at the top and everyone loves me for what I do! How can you be better than me?!", I think is essentially what we have here—because the idea of being charismatic is not really separable from this use of karisuma. There is a grey area; karisuma da can mean "[they're] charismatic". But then, celebrities are charismatic by nature—or they wouldn't be celebrities at all.

Updated Post for the Persona 5 Magic au
It all starts with the eternal battle for balance. Good v evil, light v dark. Two beings oversee all that is magical, using their every breath to keep the other at bay. With the opposing forces in balance, no one being can overcome the world, and rise up. The humans, the normal ones, remain in the dark
Darkness draws back for a few decades, and strikes swiftly. It goes to absorb the magic of Light, but cannot contain that much raw power. Light, and it's magic, are sent to the mortal plain, their magic scattering among those who were never meant to have such power
One dark night, many years later, a young witch, unaware of who he is, has his first spark of magic.
Akira Kurusu is charged for assault.
Akira Kurusu is sent to Tokyo.
Akira Kurusu is the first.
But first, he's late on his way to school. He feels the air leave his chest when a blonde girl takes down her hood in the rain. She blinks at him, and the glass film in his eyes shatters. He blinks at her. He feels normal. She gets in a man's car, and he's compelled by something else to deny a ride.
Suguru Kamoshida hits someone with his car
But it's okay, Ryuji Sakamoto gets up, completely uninjured. This has happened before, you see. A little girl, racially ambiguous, appearance shifting like the winds and the sands in the tides, well she greeted him the first time. Sent him right back, to his own waiting body
So, they decide to head to school together. That's when the talking cat shows up. And forms a blood pact with Akira, after revealing that he's a witch. A familiar bond.
The cat is Morgana, the former magic one of Light. And he recruits both boys to help him track down his magic, and return balance to the world of magic
Their first target? Kamoshida, who has some of Morgana's magic. Along the way they recruit Ann, a young succubus who's touch starved, very gay, and comes very close to killing in the name of her "best friend" that she is definitely not in love with
Their second target is an artist, who uses Morgana's magic to convince others to let him use their art as his own. Only one pupil remains in his lowly shack, one that Ryuji swears he's never seen blink
Yusuke Kitagawa believes he owes servitude to his master. A kitsune, one with large potential, just as he holds for art. The others show him the truth behind his master, how he tricked Yusuke's mother, leaving her to die, and taking all her work
He goes a little berserk. Finds Madarame in his exhibit, and let's his power fly. Yusuke drives his former master to madness, and his illusions leave a handful of visitors a little less sane than before.
Next, they go for the boss of a local Yakuza ring, Kaneshiro. The gang go after a few weeks of planning, deep in the middle of the night, dressed in Halloween store costumes for disguise, but find they don't need them
Uhm. Rating goes up for the next bit. Warning for violence and blood!
Because the doors are unlocked, left ajar. The full moon shines light on the red, wet floors, the stench of fresh death wafting out.
The sun has begun to rise by the time they gather their wits and find the central room. With one last shout of pain, they watch one last body sag between large fangs, the form of a full moon werewolf, dark fur soaked with blood, standing there. Right in the centre of the room
It turns to them, and it's bones creak as the moon comes to a close
Soon, all that's left standing there, bare, shivering, coated in blood, is Shujin Student Council President Makoto Niijima. With the additions of two furry ears atop her head, and a brown wolf's tail tucked between her legs
She's in a state of panic for many reasons. Partially for the mass murder she just did, partially for being all nakey wakey eggs and bakey. Mostly, because she has to get back to her apartment's boiler room before her sister goes to let her out, and she's in Shibuya and covered in blood and maybe losing it a little-
The gang throw Akira's jacket and Ryuji's pants at her, and race to Yongen, for a proper change of clothes and washing up. Which, leads to Ann trying to help only to discover her touch works on Makoto, who learns she's gay. Then it's a race back to Makoto's, where she ducks back into the dark boiler room
Come lunchtime at school, she thanks her underclassmen profusely, and asks to help them in return for what was a wild and awkward night. They let her in
Now is a good time to mention they have weekly Saturday Night sleepovers in LeBlanc's attic. Ann gets to spread out her wings, Yusuke doesn't have to blink, and now Makoto, who cannot put away her tail, wears pants with a hole cut in them. And she brings out her ears, too
This to say, during one of these sleepovers, there's a storm. Sojiro runs in, worried. He finds them all, magiced out, and barely thinks before begging to help him find his daughters
You see, Futaba isn't alone in her mind. Her mother had used dark magics to create a sentient AI, Sophia, but was stopped before she could properly set her free. In the incident that killed her, she uploaded Sophia directly to, Futaba. In technical terms, she's being haunted. Sophia appears over her shoulder in a ghostly blue, but humans can't see or hear her
They find her cowering inside the old movie theatre. Her uncle had shown up while she was talking to Sophie. Disastrous. But, sleepover night has one more guest going forwards
Next, is a request. News of this group of "monsters" is getting around, and through their online inbox, Haru Okumura asks if they can get her Selkie coat back, and return her father to who he once was
They have to stake him out first, make sure he has some of Morgana's magic. Ann and Yusuke go undercover as an elite married couple, with. Makoto as their large, exotic dog. For the laughs.
That night, Okumura is visited by a Vampire, who leaves him dead and drained on his study floor. Our heroes will get the blame, but during the next week of chaos, they're able to get into his office and into his safe, retrieving the pelt of a Ragdoll cat
Haru is grateful for her coat back, and spends an entire day in her cat form. She swears she'll help them clean their names, and return Morgana's magic
I will stop the plot regaling there, to list what everyone is in this au
Akira - Witch
Yalbadoath - Magic One, being of Darkness
Morgana - "sorcerer", Magic One, being of Light
Makoto - turned werewolf
Haru - ragdoll cat Selkie
Yusuke - Kitsune
Sojiro - seer of magics
Ann - succubus
Ryuji - undead
Goro - vampire
Futaba - Haunted (by Sophia)
Chihaya - nekomata
Munehisa Iwai - dragon
Tae - Wizard, potions expert
Sadayo - Fae
Ichiko - incubus
Shinya - ghost, unaware he is dead
Hifumi - warlock, charm master
Mishima - dream eater
Sumire - changeling
Anyone unlisted is human
Alright, so there's this one! I. Technically have more, cause this au covers Strikers. But this was tiring for me, I. Yeah
Feel free to ask about it! Suggest things! Comment on it!

3 + Any combo of Phantom thieves
If it wasn’t adults who constantly reminded him of his ‘crimes’, it was the students’ constant mutterings. While Akira wasn’t one prone to anger or letting words get under his skin, he would be a liar if he didn’t admit that sometimes… sometimes it was exhausting to be reminded of that societal branding his ‘crime’ left him with.
He was reminded daily of it from his guardian when he went to and from school and from the teachers who stared at him in total annoyance. The last thing he needed were the students of Shujin Academy to remind him. It was because of that, he tried to make it a habit to disregard them, to ignore them, in a somewhat laughable attempt to keep himself from really breaking down, he tried to throw himself into either his studies or his new life as a Phantom Thief in hopes that if his mind was just busy enough, no one can really get to him.
The keywords in all of this being ‘attempt’ and ‘tried’.
Akira learned one day very quickly that while the students of Shujin Academy weren’t exactly the physical confrontational types… they were pretty damn good at cornering.
Just let them ramble, he thought to himself. There wasn’t really a point in trying to argue with them. They don’t know how he didn’t randomly assault a man. They don’t know how he came rushing in because a woman cried for help and instinct took over, that he couldn’t– wouldn’t turn a blind eye if he could help it.
They don’t know that in a case between justice and corruption, the latter will win.
Just let them ramble, he thought to himself.
“Hey, are you listening?!” One of the students shouted, grabbing a fistful of his uniform and dragging him close.
“Careful, man.” Another one warned. “He might kill you.”
I’m not a killer, he thought. I’m not!
“So what? I’ll be a hero if I–”
“If you what?” A voice spoke out, anger laced in his tone.
Akira and the others looked over and found the bleach blond head of the delinquent of Shujin glaring.
It had been difficult to make friends since his hearing, since he had been branded a delinquent himself. But if there was one thing that brought even a small sense of relief, it was the sight of Ryuji Sakamoto cracking his knuckles and shooting daggers at the other students.
“Back off, Sakamoto.” The student gripping Akira threatened. “Get to runnin’.”
“No way, asshole.” Ryuji said. “And the only thing running is going to be you once I’m through with you. So let go of him. Now.”
The other students who surrounded Akira turned their attention to the former track runner.
“I said beat it!”
“And I say if you wish to keep your fingers, I’d take your hands off him.” Ryuji once more threatened.
Letting go of Akira, who fell to the ground from the unwanted shove, the students balled their own hands into a fist, ready to throw hands at Ryuji when the sound of the school bell chimed. They all froze and quickly the students ran off, leaving the two delinquents alone on the courtyard. Akira adjusted his glasses, his jaw tightly clenched when he heard footsteps getting closer.
Looking up, he saw Ryuji sticking his hand out for him, the once enraged expression he sported being replaced with a kinder and softer one.
“You okay, man?” He asked.
Akira stared at the hand. Ryuji should’ve run if he valued how society viewed him, Akira thought. The last person he would want to be around if he cared about his reputation or even wanted to attempt to ‘redeem’ himself in the views of others was to back away was Akira. If Ryuji cares for any of that, it would be best to stay quiet and turn a blind eye.
“I’ve been better.” Akira said, taking hold of his hand and being quickly jerked up from the ground.
“Man, screw them. Thinkin’ they can go around and just act all big and shit.” Ryuji huffed, digging his hands into his pockets. “People like that piss me off.”
“I couldn’t tell.” Akira slightly joked.
The bubbling anger was quickly changed to a scoff as Ryuji playfully nudged him and the two snickered slightly.
“C’mon, we should get going. I’m starvin’. Ramen at the usual place?”
Ryuji should have run. But that wasn’t who he was. Granted, Akira didn’t know him nearly as well enough as he’d like, nor Ryuji him, but one thing Akira could say with absolute certainty was this: Ryuji is a good kid.

Music prodigy and student of Atsushi Samuragochi, who acts as a ghostwriter for him (unknowingly?)
Upon meeting Futaba and recognising her on social media, he asks her to go to his concert and meet up with Samuragochi, who’s trying to get a younger audience to come to his shows
Futaba immediately thinks its suspicious that Samuragochi has gone through several students, one of which being Akira’s twin brother Ren, who they’d recently gone to Mementos to save
No nude modelling incident, but when the trio confront Akira on his mentors abuses, Akira kicks them out of the shack that he and Samuragochi have been living in - which is when they find that Samuragochi has a Palace
Eventually, Futaba convinces Akira to join her in going to the Palace, which is when he awakens to his Persona
Akira is flamboyant and energetic, being very high-spirited and talkative. However, when he’s upset, he can get quiet, to the point where it’s scary
He and Yusuke bond over both being artists who were abused by their parental figures
His persona is Rocancourt, who uses Curse skills
Main weapons are daggers and semi-automatic pistols
Goro Yoshida/Baron
High Priestess Arcana
The Student Council President of Shujin Academy, taken in by Toranosuke Yoshida after his mother died in an accident caused by the mafia
He is tasked by the principal to investigate the Phantom Thieves, but - upon finding out who the Phantom Thieves are - he decides to instead use them to stop a recent mafia scam that exploits high schoolers
Upon confronting Kaneshiro - who was his mother’s killer - Goro awakens to his Persona
Becomes the unofficial navigator and strategist for the group for a short period of time, with Violet’s help
Is often considered to be ‘too harsh’ to the students and is considered a buzzkill, which he tries to counteract by behaving ‘pleasantly’ as to not appear threatening
In reality, Goro is a surprisingly vindictive young man with a short fuse, that will often get set off over the shortest of things - which comes in handy when dealing with the injustices that the Phantom Thieves face
His persona is Corey, who uses Nuke skills
Main weapons are single-handed swords and ray guns
Ryuji Ohya/sans/Roger
Hermit Arcana
After his mother was killed due to her involvement in the Conspiracy - a death that also cost Ryuji his right leg due to being in the car at the same time - Ryuji was convinced his mother suffered from a ‘maternity neurosis’ and became a shut-in
As a result, the guilt and trauma from the accident and self-blame for his mother’s death caused Ryuji to gain a Palace
Has a skill in hacking, founding the white hat group Medjed but quitting it following their actions leaning over into black hat territory
However, Medjed decided to use their newfound position as being leaderless to threaten the Phantom Thieves — if the Phantom Thieves didn’t give up their identities, they would perform a large-scale attack on Japan known as the ‘cleanse’
Reluctantly, Ryuji contacted Yusuke, knowing they and their friends were the Phantom Thieves, in exchange for helping them with Medjed, the Phantom Thieves would change his heart
Awoke to his Persona by accepting his Shadow and confronting the image of his mother created by his distorted heart
His Palace is based on a Post Apocalyptic Wasteland, with raiders and bandits scavenging the area
His persona is Nautilus, who acts as the main Navigator for the team
Ann Takamaki/Rose?
Empress Arcana
The daughter of Felix Takamaki, the founder of a modelling studio
She works for her father as a model, predominantly appearing in photoshoots when she was in her teenage years
After her mother’s death, her father slowly began to become isolated and obsessed with material goods and power. Ann noticed that he’d started to become distorted as he’d begun to neglect her in favor of other models, namely Mika
I’m honestly not sure what causes Ann to seek out the Phantom Thieves… Maybe something to do with Shiho like in canon?
But she awakens in her dad’s palace and gains the strength to save herself and her friend from her father’s distortion
Her persona is Fiocca, who uses Psy skills
Main weapons are whips and sub-machine guns
Haru Okumura/Blanc?
Justice Arcana
Former heir to the Okumura Foods Conglomerate, who became a detective prodigy after her father mysteriously died
She’s working with Yoshida, and it’s after the Phantom Thieves are targetted for Felix Takamaki’s murder that she decides to seek them out and ask them to enter Yoshida’s palace
Very sweet and polite, good natured, but has a ruthless streak when in the Metaverse
Probably already knew of the Metaverse as she heard Violet say something about ‘pancakes’…
Her persona is Cagliostro, who uses Bless skills
Main weapons are axes and rocket launchers
Satoru Yoshizawa
Faith Arcana
Information not found, will get back to you later ;)

In the wake of the calling cards and Kamoshida's personality pulling a 180, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts becomes a hot topic among the students of Shujin Academy. The Phantom Thieves sell the Olympic medal for money and celebrate their victory at a fancy buffet, where they officially establish the name (The Phantoms) and objective of their team.
Afterwards, Morgana takes them back into the Metaverse, into a very peculiar Palace known as "Mementos". Rather than being any one individual's Palace, Mementos was a Palace for the entirety of the human subconscious, located within Tokyo's subway tunnels. Shadows in Mementos are not powerful enough to have their own Palaces (yet), but pursuing them and forcing them to have a change of heart can have beneficial effects in the real world. Morgana believes that if they delve deep within this Palace, he can find a way to get this memory and human form back...but this will take a great deal of time and effort on their part.
It is in the pursuit of one such Shadow that they learn of Ichiryusai Madarame, a famed artist that, according to the reformed Shadow, is actually a notorious plagiarist who uses the artwork of other people to bolster his own career and wealth. The Shadow's corresponding human used to be a pupil under Madarame until he was no longer of any use to him, and now worries for another pupil of Madarame's—a young man and a passionate artist—that he fears is yet another victim.
The Thieves attend an art exhibition held for Madarame to gather more information. On the way there, they meet Madarame's pupil: Yusuke Kitagawa, an art student at a prestigious boarding school in Tokyo. Yusuke, who becomes enchanted by Ann, talks of how he was inspired to take up painting because of one of Madarame's works, a painting called "Sayuri". When pressed about Madarame's abuses, however, he adamantly defends his teacher, who took him in when he was orphaned and raised him while helping him hone his craft.
The Thieves find Madarame's Palace at his atelier shack, which his twisted heart views as a lavish museum. Therein, they find his former pupils, as well as Yusuke...in the form of portraits, Madarame's cognition of his own students. When they reach a dead end, Morgana suggests changing Madarame's cognition in the real world by gaining access into the locked room in Madarame's atelier.
To that end, Ann accepts an offer Yusuke made to model for a nude painting. Morgana picks the lock, and Ann pulls Yusuke into the now-unlocked room. Madarame catches them as they discover the locked room was used to store several forged paintings of the "Sayuri", along with what appears to be the real original "Sayuri".
Escaping Madarame and his hired security via Meta-Nav, Ann and Morgana bring Yusuke—now confronted with mounting proof that his mentor is a fraud—into Madarame's Palace. When they go to take the treasure, Madarame's Shadow appears, revealing to Yusuke that his mother was one of Madarame's pupils and the original painter of "Sayuri", which featured a young woman holding a baby: Yusuke and his mother! Yusuke's mother was physically ill and one day, when she was suffered a seizure, Madarame left her to die so he could steal the "Sayuri", modify it, and claim credit for painting it himself.
Enraged, Yusuke awakens his Persona, Goemon, and aids the Phantom Thieves in subduing Madarame's Shadow and taking the Treasure for themselves. Before the Palace begins to collapse, however, Madarame reveals the existence of another Metaverse user: one with a "black mask".
The Phantom Thieves escape with the original version of "Sayuri", which Yusuke entrusts to Sojiro for safekeeping. Not long after, Madarame holds a press conference wherein he confesses to plagiarizing his pupils' works.

Media Reflection: Tokyo->Persona 5
As I mentioned in my June 8 post, on my second free day I went around Tokyo and visited locations that were recreated in Persona 5, one of my favorite video games. The game’s artists were able to capture many famous spots around the city, and frankly it was a very exciting experience getting to see the places that I know and love from the game as they are in the real world. As described in my former post, the places I visited in Tokyo for this excursion were Akihabara, Kanda, Aiyana-Itchome and Shibuya (although I did visit more these are the ones which I have comparisons from the game).
Reflection:
Throughout Persona 5, the general atmosphere that is created in this fictional Tokyo is one full of life with colorful signs, streets filled with people, and lively music to illustrate how much energy there is throughout the city, and to boot, the city is also portrayed as incredibly clean. As a general rule this is exactly how Tokyo felt as I walked through the streets, and I cannot even tell you how many times I gave props to the creators of Persona who did such a good job recreating the atmosphere. I will now go through all of the locations I went to and describe how each one of them was recreated with pictures to help describe what I mean.
Akihabara:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In real life Akihabara was classically known as the tech center of Tokyo, but recently, it has mostly become the center of Otaku culture rather than tech although tech stores do still have their place there. Here, maid cafes and anime girls are everywhere the eye can see. Compared to the other locations on that are coming up on this post, I actually think this was one of the least similar. Although yes there are nods to the fact this is a place for otaku things, it definitely is mostly shown as a tech place (at least at first which is all I have seen in game). While this isn’t necessarily inaccurate, it definitely is a slight difference from the real world. However, the atmosphere created in the game is very accurate with all of the people constantly pushing through the street and the colorful signs shown everywhere. Also, I’m pretty sure there is in fact a maid cafe in game in Akihabara so I suppose that is accurate as well.
Kanda:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although in game it’s just a church, I would like to point out how well they recreated the vibe of this place of worship. Although much of the game has a very excited atmosphere, this place is one of the most relaxed places in game. This is exactly how I felt as I entered the church from the street and instantly experienced a shift from very high to very low energy (almost like walking into a library after walking through Disney world on a crowed day).
Aoyama-Itchome:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This place was one that I was particularly impressed with. Although the pictures look a bit different, they actually recreated the high school Shujin Academy from this part of the city and made it the one of the most important locations in game. I didn’t take a picture of the school itself out of respect for the students, but the idea that the same street can be found in-game despite it being a very random location otherwise is mind-boggling. Here they recreated the bustle of highschoolers and salarymen walking around quite well. I feel like this place in-game gives a good snapshot of what the commute of a lot of students and salarymen looks like in Tokyo.
Shibuya:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, I know I keep talking about energy, but let me tell you, the energy the game portrays in Shibuya is by far the greatest. Shibuya in-game does a great job showing how it feels to be a shopper in Tokyo. The streets are absolutely packed with people, there are workers everywhere trying to sell you things, and there are so many things to do there that it’s easy to lose track of your plans. To say that Shibuya is full of life in the real world is an understatement, and the creators of Persona 5 captured this perfectly.
Final thoughts:
It’s hard to describe, but the subtle differences that can be found in the different places throughout Tokyo are what make the city so special. Each section of the city has its own quirks and is worth a visit on its own merits. It is this accurate portrayal of these subtle differences in Persona 5 that it made me so excited as I walked through Tokyo my first couple days. I feel like the whole game was so good at portraying the city that is almost like a commercial of sorts. Honestly, if I ever start missing Tokyo in the future, I’m probably going to find myself walking through the game trying to see if I can spot any places I’ve been in the real world.
If you ever play Persona 5 and like what you see in game definitely give Tokyo a visit.

@transcendentxchronicles for the less rusty muse
Ever since former instructor Suguru Kamoshida formally resigned, Shujin Academy’s reputation sank in tandem. Emboldened students came forward, now-informed parents questioned how the school allowed such behavior from a teacher, and local news outlets also pried for answers. And thus, in a last-ditch effort, Shujin sought outside help to “internally investigate” how Kamoshida’s reign lasted so long and give the school a chance to properly shift blame.
His first order of business: conversing with a long list of students.  One of which being a recent transfer student, Akira Kurusu.  His listed home address was a small cafe kind of out of the way, but he eventually found it. And from the looks of it, the young man of the hour was helping the shop. Perfect.
Tumblr media
“Good morning, Kurusu-san. My name is Julius Kresnik, and to promote student wellness at Shujin Academy, my task has been to interview students who the school believes have been frequently mistreated on campus.” Just like the other dozens of times he’s had to give that starting blurb, the detective offered a deep bow and a friendly smile before pulling out a chair at the bar. “Could I trouble you with a few questions? Or would you prefer if I visited at a more convenient time? Oh, and I’ll take a coffee as well-- I wouldn’t ask your shop to humor me for free.”

@phantom-anarchy sent in this unprompted...
“You're Dr. Maruki, right?” Shinjiro asked, opening the door to his office. “My friends told me I should take part in your psychology sessions.”
Tumblr media
There's a sound of affirmative and, also, an audible slurp. Takuto's lunches were, more oft, taken alongside the students' — punctuation had never been an established acquaintance with him, though. Takuto amends this by clearing his throat, meekly saying yes, that's me! before setting his styrofoam goodie aside, and making himself as presentable as a man could without a mirror.
It was a messy system, in spite of Takuto's preparations. His former assistant did the best they could, but some wires were still crossed, Takuto now alone to unravel the knots he had unconsciously made, and one of these trip-ups involved no longer having an office off of campus. As such, his appointments - outside of the student body of Shujin Academy - were all mix-mashed together.
Whenever the usual attire wasn't spotted, that was Takuto's immediate thought... of course, that went hand-in-hand with the addition of doctor to his surname, but... in his defense, his attention had been drawn toward a scrumptious bowl of instant ramen.
“Oh? I didn't know I had reached others by word of mouth, but I have heard that's the best form of... uh, advertisement?” that word felt weird when set aside therapy practices, but Takuto knew of no other form that phrase came in. “Then you must be... Yoshino-san, is that right?”

alright i got one and im p sure its been done A LOT but; chariot!makoto and priestess!ryuji?
Okay okay okay. Okay!!
So Chariot Makoto is easy for me, she's in my Chaos Swap, so I'll lay that out here
Chariot!Makoto
She's always been too smart for her own good, unable to back down, stubborn as a brick wall. Sae is, everything, impossible to live up to. At some point, Makoto. Stops trying. She can't stay in her sister's shadow forever, you know? So, the best way to distance herself from Sae is, heavy rebellion
Leather jacket over her shujin uniform. Piercings all over- nose, eyebrow, lots in the ears- undercut with her hair, wears the pants with the uniform, big heavy boots. Skips classes yet, does as well as a smart kid can naturally. So, no one ever tries to stop her. No one intervenes when she becomes so distanced she just. Sits on the roof all day, staring up at nothing
She gets her fire back. Getting back at Kamoshida for breaking her left wrist in her first year, and for all he's done to the girls at Shujin. Her confidante is about finding out who Makoto truly is. Helping her find her path. A future. An identity.
She's an angry crier. An emotionally stunted mess. So bad at social interaction. And, most of all, unable to back down, stubborn as fuck, and does dangerous shit before she even thinks of the consequences
(I of course did pair her with Lovers!Haru cause. I'm weak for those two together)
Priestess!Ryuji
Oooh okay okay. This one is one I've considered, like, the least? It's not where I usually shove Ryuji
He'd be, like. On the student council, the rep for athletic clubs. He got injured and can't compete himself, so. He supports them however he can
However, they keep slashing the athletics budgets for teams that aren't volleyball, and Ryuji ends up having to tell the other teams they lose their funding. He's become sorta the Grim Reaper
He hates it, so bad. He tries to fight it, but, they don't listen to him. He's just the dumb jock to them, and, he loses that spark. Silently goes by each day, isolated and called the Athletics Reaper. All his old friends? They hate him
But, he hears of these Phantom Thieves. Thinks he might be able to get them to, help him out. Get them to stop the greedy Kamoshida from taking all the funds and shit. He doesn't think, threatens them, but gets to work with them to help
Priestess Ryuji wanted to help. He loved getting to support the athletes in any way he could, making sure they all had what they needed to succeed. His confidante would be helping him repair his relationships with his former team. Then, watching Ryuji blossom again. He even speaks up at a council meeting, fighting for a more fair budget
THERE YOU GO LET ME KNOW HOW YA LIKE EM
