Alert promo for next week's 3rd episode, “Zoey”

My thoughts for Alert season 1 episode 2, these are just my overly critical opinions as a college student studying screenwriting and television:

- I really was hoping for another scene with Keith, Jason, and Nikki, hell, even Sidney to see the full dynamic between the family but we never got it. it seems like Jason hasn't talked to Keith separately yet, which is kinda weird to me, like, why doesn’t he talk to his son that's been gone for 6 years? we saw Nikki and Keith talk but that's it, I wanted a morning-after scene or something.

- that being said, the scene where mike questions Keith is actually very good and compelling, we finally got to see the condition Keith is in. thankfully, he seems to be having some trouble adjusting and dealing with what he went through. It would've been too unbelievable if he was just fine but thankfully they showed that the kid may need some help, hopefully, a therapist or something. we needed more scenes like that!! but we never really got them and it's a shame because that's like the main drive of the show, Keith was in like less than 5 scenes or so.

also, where does Keith go during the day when his parents are solving the case, Sidney said that she just left school to pick him up so they left him home alone? right after he was just held captive for 6 years!? idk this is me just venting lol!

- I'm so sorry but the whole storyline (the 3rd storyline of the episode I might add) of C and his father was just weird to me. There was no reason for it, they only mentioned his dad like three times. I get that they wanted to bring another perspective on what a missing person may look like (especially if they're right in front of you) and add some more characterization for C but like now is not the time, its only episode 2!! those precious TV minutes could've been used to have more moments with Keith and the family but no just add some random storyline that basically has nothing to do with the case or anything else!

- I really liked the elevator scene, maybe it was a bit awkward, but I actually really enjoyed it and even laughed. that was a highlight of the episode for me but it does raise questions about June. Does June know that Keith is back? I have a weird feeling that Jason just hasn't told her because no sane person would be so narcissistic to only care about her ability to have kids when Jason is very clearly going through something. and then she just packs up and leaves? bruh, I need more info on her and what she knows! also I do luv bre blair, she is great, and her dynamic with Scott is also really fun to watch!

- some of the lines that are said just strike me as odd, especially with Kemi. she says the most random ass things, it has the potential to be funny but most of the time it doesn't come across that way, it's more like trying to process what she just said and trying to figure out how it relates to anything. When she said the “sleeping with Ben Franklin” line, I literally had to rewind it because it just came outta nowhere lol! Again, these precious moments that are used for wasted dialogue and storylines could've been used more productively towards the bigger storyline or hell, the current case!

- as I mentioned before, the show seems to have a severe problem balancing the case of the week with the character's personal issues. this case had someone who was literally dying and beaten to death but it seems to take them so long to focus and find him. Idk it seems like the team is almost nonchalant about it, they go from the case to Keith to C’s dad, to Keith, and finally back to the case. It's just a whole jumbled mess. as a police force, their main goal should be solving the case, the team comes across as unprofessional.

- lastly (haha and finally, I've rambled on long enough), I thought the twist at the end with Sidney was interesting, it does bring a whole new light onto the mystery of who Keith is. hopefully, we are able to find out and FOX doesn’t cancel the show before that. I hate to say it but I'm a little nervous that they are.

My guess is that they'll let the show run its 10-episode course but not renew it for season 2. But having someone like Jaimie Foxx executive produce does give the show a benefit, especially funding-wise. Foxx got some pretty famous people to promote the show on their social medias (Jennifer Anniston, Michael B Jordan, etc.), so that might be the saving grace.

Anyways as I've said before, someone needs to be more critical in that writer's room because it's a mess that needs to be figured out. My guess is that they wanted a new formula/structure for procedural shows like Alert but it's just not working out. Or maybe it's just bad writing, which is surprising because it's written by John Eisendrath who was a part of the creative team for Alias and Blacklist (both shows were good with a lot of fans).

In closing, it sucks because it looked so good and I was hoping for more, especially for Scott. He is a very good actor and I think that he's above this show. I've always thought that he would really benefit from being on an original show on Netflix or Amazon Prime or HBO. I think he's great at procedurals but I know he can do so much more on a show that doesn't have a strict structure like this one and H50 does.

Onto to episode 3 next week! Let me know what you guys think!
