Note

What other fandoms are you familiar enough with to use as an AU prompt? Pokemon Trainer AU? Homestuck AU (they'd still probably die but at least there are lots of ways to come back to life)?

I’m not that familiar with Homestuck, definitely not enough to do an AU. I read the novelizations of the Pokemon show as a kid but never saw the show or played any of the video games. I did play the super-obscure Pokemon board game, but most of my trading cards were printed in Japanese (I had a strange childhood), so my experience there is, uh, probably not quite overlapping with everyone else’s.

Disclaimer 1: Like a lot of people who went to high school in the American South, my education in literature is pretty shamefully lacking in a lot of areas. (As in, during our African American History unit in ninth grade we read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn… and that was it. There were a lot of good teachers in with the *ahem* Less Woke ones (how I read Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Bluest Eye) and college definitely set me on the path to trying to find books written/published outside the WASP-ier parts of the U.S., but the overall list is still embarrassingly hegemonic.

Disclaimer 4: There are no unproblematic faves on this list. I love Supernatural, and I know that Supernatural is hella misogynistic. On the flip side: I don’t love The Lord of the Rings at all, partially because LOTR is hella misogynistic, but I also don’t think that should stop anyone else from loving LOTR if they’re willing to love it and also acknowledge its flaws.

Críticas | Noche de juegos (2018)

Comedia por demás entretenida con un sólido despliegue narrativo y un ritmo singularmente frenético.

Sinopsis: Max (Jason Bateman) y Annie (Rachel McAdams), una pareja por naturaleza competitiva, se reúne todas las semanas con parejas amigas para demostrar sus habilidades en noches de juegos. En medio de un tratamiento de fertilidad, reciben la visita de Brooks (Kyle Chandler), hermano exitoso de Max, quien les promete una velada de entretenimiento inolvidable sin pensar que, al mismo tiempo, sus misteriosos negocios le traerían serios problemas.

Noche de juegos es una comedia audaz en la que cada personaje es la pieza de un rompecabezas que encaja a la perfección. Cada uno está dotado con una personalidad marcada y habilidades diferentes que se usan en diversos momentos para un avance natural de los hechos y completamente lógico. Además de ser funcionales a la historia, difícil de encontrar en una comedia, todos ellos se ven envueltos en diferentes conflictos cuyos procesamientos se dan en un tono cómico y relajado, pasando por el humor más negro al más ingenuo, y sin perder el hilo principal.

La astucia de introducir en los escasos primeros minutos todos los conflictos que se desenvuelven a lo largo de la película también es para destacar, junto a un par de secuencias de persecución con planos salidos de la norma y las acertadas referencias a la cultura pop y al cine hollywoodense (aunque a veces no tanto). Aunque Noche de juegos resulta una propuesta interesante desde el guión, también se debe que remarcar un exceso en la intención por sorprender al espectador en cuanto a los diferentes giros que puede tomar la historia hasta el absurdo, algo que, si se quiere, puede verse reparado en uno de los chistes finales. Junto a un elemento que es olvidado y aprovechado según convenga la ocasión, son los puntos más débiles de una película con una propuesta simple pero con un despliegue y una inteligencia poco usual para una comedia.

Pour pimenter leur vie de couple, Max et Annie animent un jeu une nuit par semaine. Cette fois ils comptent sur Brooks, le frère charismatique de Max, pour organiser une super soirée à thème autour du polar, avec de vrais faux malfrats et agents fédéraux ! Brooks a même prévu de se faire enlever…. sauf qu’il reste introuvable. En tentant de résoudre l’énigme, nos joueurs invétérés commencent à comprendre qu’ils se sont peut-être trompés sur toute la ligne. De fausse piste en rebondissement, ils n’ont plus aucun point de repère et ne savent plus s’il s’agit encore d’un jeu… ou pas. Cette nuit risque bien d’être la plus délirante – et la plus dangereuse – de toute leur carrière de joueurs…

“Game Night” est une comédie américaine datant de 2018, réalisée par John Francis Daley et Jonathan Goldstein, à qui l’on doit également “Vacation” (2015). Les acteurs principaux sont Jason Bateman, qu’on a pu voir dans “Agents presque secrets” (2016), Rachel McAdams, qu’on a pu voir dans “Doctor Strange” (2016), Billy Magnussen, qu’on a pu voir dans “La Revanche des Dragons Verts” (2014), Danny Huston, qu’on a pu voir dans “Wonder Woman” (2017), Jesse Plemons, qu’on a pu voir dans “Barry Seal: American Traffic” (2017), Kyle Chandler, qu’on a pu voir dans “Broken City” (2013), et Michael C. Hall, qu’on a pu voir dans “The Secret Man” (2017).

L’histoire proposée par “Game Night” nous invite à suivre Max (Jason Bateman) et son épouse Annie (Rachel McAdams) qui organise une de leurs soirées régulières de jeu dans leur maison de banlieue. La séquence d’ouverture du film est un montage habilement édité qui montre que des jeux comme Pictionary, Scrabble et autres charades sont le fondement de la relation de leur couple et ont conduit à leur mariage. Les autres participants à cette soirée de jeu sont Ryan (Billy Magnussen), Sarah (Sharon Horgan) et un couple marié, Kevin (Lamorne Morris) et Michelle (Kylie Bunbury). À cela on ajoute un invité surprise, Brooks (Kyle Chandler), le frère de Max qui en est quelque peu jaloux.

À la fin de la soirée, Brooks invite l’ensemble des participants à venir effectuer la prochaine soirée chez lui, pour une soirée de jeu différente, sur le modèle de ces soupers mystérieux qui sont devenus un phénomène de mode il y a quelques années. À partir de là, “Game Night” bascule dans une sorte de tour de montagnes russes par le biais de slapstick (un concept humoristique impliquant une part de violence physique volontairement exagérée), des échanges impassibles dans un contexte de danger imminent qui s’oriente de plus en plus vers le chaos.

Pour ceux qui auraient vu des métrages comme “The Game” (1997) de David Fincher ou d’autres métrages axés sur le concept du Home Invasion, il y a de fortes chances qu’ils puissent anticiper la majorité des rebondissements que propose le scénario signé par Mark Perez. La psychologie des personnages est très basique et elle interagit de manière classique avec l’intrigue. L’incapacité de Max et Annie à concevoir un enfant, l’obsession de Kevin concernant l’infidélité de son épouse Michelle, etc. L’intervention de Jeffrey Wright en tant que pseudo-agent du FBI prête à sourire, et l’apparition de Michael C. Hall dans le rôle du méchant de service est presque ridicule.

Le personnage le plus intéressant est probablement Gary, le voisin de Max et Annie, un flic divorcé, qui semble être à la limite de la dépression, et qui souffre de ne plus être dans le cercle d’amis de ses voisins, se voyant ainsi refoulé des parties de jeux. Jesse Plemons incarne avec brio ce personnage déjanté et qui fait presque froid dans le dos, se présentant sous les traits d’un psychopathe. L’acteur vole systématiquement la vedette à ses partenaires à chacune de ses interventions.

L’édition de Jamie Gross, Gregory Plotkin, et David Egan permet à “Game Night” de garder un certain dynamisme et le rythme est donc assez soutenu. La photographie signée Barry Peterson est plaisante avec essentiellement des visuels de nuit, l’histoire principale se déroulant d’une traite lors d’une soirée prolongée. La bande originale n’est pas particulièrement marquante. Bien qu’il y ait des ingrédients de films d’action, avec une scène de baston, des courses-poursuites dans une maison de luxe, et même une blessure par balle qui entraînera une intervention chirurgicale de fortune, ce métrage reste assez décevant. Les gags tombent souvent à plat, et on ne fait guère plus que de sourire à certaines plaisanteries. Il n’y a, pour ainsi dire, rien d’innovant dans ce film.

En conclusion, “Game Night” est une comédie ordinaire disposant d’une histoire loufoque, d’une intrigue familière et d’un développement simpliste. Le rythme est soutenu, mais l’humour est léger, voire tombe à plat et les quelques scènes d’action ne permettent pas que l’on éprouve de l’empathie pour les personnages. La distribution cabotine quelque peu et seul Jesse Plemons tire réellement son épingle du jeu. Un film décevant qu’on ne saurait pas recommander.

‘A fábrica de nada’ se hace con el Giraldillo de Oro en el Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla

La actriz danesa Trine Dyrholm recibirá el Premio Ciudad de Sevilla esta noche durante la ceremonia de clausura del Festival que culminará con la proyección de Barbara de Mathieu Amalric, Premio al Mejor Director del XIV Festival de Sevilla

El Teatro Lope de Vega acogerá esta noche la gala de clausura de la XIV edición del Festival de Sevilla. La ceremonia, que contará de nuevo con la actriz catalana Silvia Abril como presentadora, será el colofón de más de una semana en la que Sevilla se ha establecido, un año más, como la capital del cine europeo.

La película portuguesa A Fábrica de Nada de Pedro Pinho se ha hecho con el Giraldillo de Oro de la XIV edición. El documentalista Pedro Pinho, con la crisis económica como trasfondo, ha hecho de éste su primer largometraje de ficción la película europea revelación del año. A Fábrica de Nada (The Nothing Factory) es una referencia desde que se presentó en la Quincena de Realizadores de Cannes y ha tenido en Sevilla su premiere nacional.

Durante la gala se procederá a la entrega de premios a las películas galardonadas en las distintas secciones del festival. Asimismo, la actriz danesa Trine Dyrholm, uno de los rostros más populares del cine europeo y musa del movimiento Dogma 95, recibirá el Premio Ciudad de Sevilla. El festival reconoce así la trayectoria de una intérprete que ha desarrollado su carrera paralelamente en cine, televisión y teatro y que ha participado en más de cincuenta títulos. Dyrholm ha presentado durante el festival su último trabajo, Nico, 1988 de Susanna Nicchiarelli, en el que ha dado vida a la mítica cantante de la Velvet Underground e icono de la cultura de los años sesenta y setenta.

Festival de cine europeo de Sevilla "se consolida" con 20 estrenos mundiales

Sevilla (España), 10 oct (EFE).- El Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla (sur), que se celebrará del 3 al 11 de noviembre, mostrará más de 200 títulos y de ellos 20 estrenos mundiales, además de apostar por "consolidar" el cine de autor europeo y acogerá la primera proyección de "Oro", de Agustín Díaz Yanes. Un festival que "se consolida" como punto de encuentro del cine europeo de autor con la presencia de 32 países y casi un centenar de directores, según su director, José Luis Cienfuegos. "Hay una destacada presencia de producciones reconocidas en festivales de todo el mundo y muchas obras españolas del carácter más heterodoxo", subrayó en la presentación del programa. Otro de los atractivos de la cita será, el martes 7 de noviembre, el estreno de "Oro", de Agustín Díaz Yanes, basada en un relato breve de Arturo Pérez Reverte que cuenta la aventura de hombres como Lope de Aguirre o Núñez de Balboa en busca de fortuna por la selva amazónica. Al estreno asistirá su equipo artístico, compuesto por actores como José Coronado, Raúl Arévalo, Bárbara Lennie, Oscar Faenada y Antonio Dechen. En la sección oficial a concurso, 16 películas competirán por el Giraldillo de Oro, entre ellas "A Ciambra", del italo-estadounidense Jonas Carpignano, que cuenta con Martin Scorsese como productor ejecutivo, o "A Violet Life", segunda película del francés Thierry de Peretti, que analiza el movimiento independentista de Córcega. A esta se suman "Little Crusader", del checo Václav Kadrnka; "Ramiro", del portugués Manual Mozos; "Winter Brother", la ópera prima del islandés Hlynur Palmason; "God's Own Country" del británico Francis Lee o las producciones españolas "El mar nos mira de lejos", de Manuel Muñoz Rivas, y "Tierra firme", de Carlos Marqués-Marcet. Durante el festival, los cineastas acompañarán y presentarán sus propias obras en la muestra, para lo que hay previstos 160 encuentros con el público en coloquios, presentaciones, clases magistrales o seminarios. El objetivo de este año es repetir las cifras de participación de la edición anterior (unos 75.000 espectadores y unos 100.000 participantes en distintos eventos o seminarios) y acogerá la visita de intérpretes como Geraldine y Oona Chaplin, Mathieu Amalric, Pedro Pinho, Teresa Villaverde, Rachid Hami, Mario Casas, Oscar Jaenada o Juan Diego. En esta edición está además previsto un homenaje a la actriz Kiti Manver y la concesión de dos Giraldillos de Honor a personas del séptimo arte cuyos nombres no han sido desvelados. En la apuesta por un cine que propone nuevos lenguajes, 19 películas integran la sección "Nuevas Olas", una de las señas de identidad del festival, mientras la de "Nuevas Olas no ficción' ofrecerá nueve títulos de estreno. Además y como es tradicional, el festival acogerá, el día 4, el anuncio de las nominaciones de los Premios de Cine Europeo, que se entregarán en Berlín el 9 de diciembre. Unos 10.000 jóvenes han solicitado, por otra parte, participar en la sección Europa Júnior y Cinéfilos del Futuro, centrada en las audiencias más jóvenes, que acogerá el estreno de "Le Grand Méchant Renard et autres contes...", una cinta de animación de los franceses Patrick Imbert y Benjamin Renner, que participaron en "Ernest et Célestine", nominada al Óscar a mejor filme de animación, categoría en la que ganó el Premio Cesar. La Sección Oficial del Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla aporta diferentes visiones de Europa

Con muchísimas tendencias provenientes de multitud de países, el Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla es una enorme oportunidad para ver un cine muy personal y único.

Este viernes 3 de Noviembre, comienza el Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla, una oportunidad para un cine algo más desconocido para el público general. Un año más, la provincia andaluza se viste de gala para recibir nuevas percepciones del continente europeo, con tendencias más rupturistas y con diferentes ciclos. En la Sección Oficial, dieciséis películas con gran atención por parte de la crítica, competirán por conseguir el Giraldillo de Oro.

‘A Ciambra’ es la nueva película de Jonas Carpignano, a quien acompaña Martin Scorsese en la producción. El largometraje cuenta la vida de una comunidad de gitanos al Sur de Italia de la mano de un adolescente que se hace adulto en este entorno de delincuencia y necesidad. La cinta fue ganadora del premio Label Europa Cinemas en la Quincena de los Realizadores del 70º Festival de Cannes.

En este mismo certamen estuvo también ‘A Violent Life’, de Thierry de Peretti. Esta obra oscura y realista analiza las claves del movimiento independentista en Córcega, siguiendo los pasos de un joven envuelto en el Frente de Liberación Nacional de Córcega que lucha por salir del entorno de violencia en el que está sumergido.

Vaclav Kadrnka competirá en Sección Oficial con su segunda película, ‘Little Crusader’. Es un largometraje particular en forma de road movie medieval que ganó el Globo de Cristal a la Mejor Película en el pasado Festival de Karlovy Vary. Como protagonista se encuentra Karel Roden (Hellboy, Blade II) que interpreta a un cruzado tras la pista de su hijo en una historia sobre la pérdida y los ideales.

Manuel Mozos, gran exponente del cine portugués en los últimos años, estará también en competición con su nueva película ‘Ramiro’, una divertida y conmovedora comedia que describe el universo del librero, el cual en ocasiones se encuentra en un bloqueo creativo.

‘Winter Brothers’ representará al cine islandés, una película dirigida por Hylnur Pálmason. Intensa y provocadora, trata la rivalidad entre dos hermanos que se acentúa cuando compiten por la misma mujer.

Tras lograr un importante éxito con su primera película, 10.000 km, Carlos Marqués-Marcet estrena su segundo largometraje, ‘Tierra Firme’, protagonizado por Oona Chaplin, David Verdaguer y Natalia Tena. Con la intención de reflejar diferentes inquietudes de la juventud, la película posee múltiples toques de comedia. Además, inaugurará el Festival.

‘Zama’ es la cuarta película de la directora Lucrecia Martel, protagonizada por Daniel Giménez Cacho (Blancanieves) y Lola Dueñas (Volver). Es la adaptación de la obra literaria del mismo nombre escrita por Antonio Di Benedetto. ‘Zama‘ sigue la historia de Don Diego de Zama, un funcionario de la Corona Española que desesperado por lograr su traslado a Buenos Aires desde la ciudad de Asunción en el siglo XVII decide emprender la misión de atrapar a un peligroso bandido con el fin de recuperar el prestigio de su nombre y hacer méritos frente a la Corona.

Eva Vila estrena mundialmente ‘Penélope’ en el Festival de Cine Europeo, uniéndose así a las numerosas películas españolas que se encuentran en Sección Oficial. La película plantea, a través de la historia de Carmen, una modista de 97 años, y Ramón, quien tras 30 años fuera decide regresar a su pueblo natal, una revisión de dos movimientos universales que ya se encuentran en el mito de la Odisea: el de quedarse y esperar, seguir fiel a los orígenes, y el de marchar para romper las raíces y no vivir según lo que se espera de nosotros.

‘El mar nos mira de lejos’ es la nueva producción de Manuel Muñoz Rivas la cual también competirá por el Giraldillo de Oro. Entre el documental y la ficción, la leyenda de una antigua y olvidada civilización yace enterrada bajo grandes extensiones de dunas en el sur de España. Desde hace algo más de un siglo varios viajeros han llegado hasta ese recóndito territorio buscando las huellas de antiguos pobladores, tal vez los restos de una ciudad sepultada por las arenas, o acaso una suerte de utopía extraviada. Ignorantes de esos mitos y de las ilusiones románticas de arqueólogos y aventureros, unos pocos hombres, apenas visibles entre los arenales, habitan hoy en soledad ese lugar frente al mar.

También tendremos ‘Tierra de Dios’, dirigida por Francis Lee. En ella, Johnny Saxby es un joven granjero de Yorkshire que intenta olvidar sus problemas personales con la bebida y el sexo, después de que su padre se quedara parcialmente paralizado por un accidente cerebrovascular. Cuando durante la primavera llega al pueblo un inmigrante rumano para trabajar en la cría de ovejas, su visión de la vida cambia de forma radical.

Temas tan interesantes como el trabajo del proletariado se verán reflejados en la película ‘Western’ de Valeska Grisebach. Un grupo de obreros alemanes empieza a trabajar en un lugar remoto en la campiña búlgara. La tierra lejana despierta el sentido aventurero de los hombres, pero también tienen que enfrentarse a sus propios prejuicios y desconfianzas debido a las barreras lingüísticas y culturales. Al poco tiempo, empezarán a competir por el reconocimiento y los favores de los aldeanos.

Claire Denis, junto a Juliette Binoche y Gerard Depardieu en el reparto, dirige ‘Un sol de interior’ donde Isabelle, madre soltera y artista divorciada con un hijo, busca el amor verdadero, pero sólo va encontrando decepciones…

El cine portugués tendrá una representación más con ’A Fabrica de Nada’, dirigida por Pedro Pinho. Una noche, un grupo de trabajadores se da cuenta de que la administración está robando maquinaria y materiales de su propia fábrica. Cuando se preparan para organizar el equipo y la producción, se les obliga a no hacer nada, como represalia, mientras las negociaciones para su despido están en marcha. La presión desencadena una revuelta entre los trabajadores, lo que afectará a todo lo que les rodea.

Una especia de película metabiográfica se cuela en la Sección Oficial con ‘Bárbara’, realizada por Mathieu Amalric. Un director quiere hacer un biopic sobre la cantante Barbara. El director y la actriz trabajan juntos, con cercanía.

Laurent Cantet presentará al Festival ‘El taller de escritura’, un drama profundamente social. Antoine va a un taller de escritura en el que un grupo de jóvenes ha sido seleccionado para escribir un thriller policiaco con la ayuda de Olivia, una famosa novelista. El proceso creativo hace hincapié en el pasado industrial del pueblo, un tipo de nostalgia que deja indiferente a Antoine. Más preocupado por los temores del mundo moderno, el joven pronto chocará con el grupo y con Olivia.

El cine italiano se verá representado por Roberto de Paolis con ‘Corazón Puro’. En su primer largometraje, De Paolis realiza una muestra de los suburbios romanos con las máximas de las purezas, por duro que pueda ser.
