Bakura Chart 9.0: yami bakura derives joy from my misery. 100 colors.
Tumblr media
im actually about to lose my mind why does this keep happening i was so convinced i was finally done but no. i feel like god is mocking me. what was meant to be just a silly little comparison while i was bored literally once has spiralled out of control. what is wrong with this little white-haired freak. not even the merch stays consistent. i hope he explodes and fucking dies. i hope the boiled one gets him. i hope the locust gets him. i need to run him over with a steamroller i cant do this anymore. him and his fuckass colored eye contacts are the bane of my existence. the agony this chart brings me is indescribable and insurmountable. we've reached 100 colors i might actually just combust and die.
theres just no need theres absolutely no need for all these colors. i could stop, sure, but then there'd be colors people don't know about. i keep pressing on despite my hatred for this chart. this is just my legacy now i dont even fucking know anymore. ill just be bakura eye chart guy for the rest of my days.
also people keep reblogging versions 1 + 3 and occasionally 5 and honest to god it feels like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i dont know how to feel about this anymore. mostly its just "wow. you guys havent seen anything yet." i wish i could go back to like whenever i started making this stupid fucking chart just to shoot myself before it got to this point. is this how frankenstein felt upon releasing his monster to the world. how pandora felt upon opening the box. neither old age nor sickness will be what takes me, bakura eye chart will be the thing that kills me. i hate this fluffy white anime boy in ways words cant describe
color count for ver 9.0: 100. one fucking hundred. i can't say anything anymore

Concept: After the one two punch of Tain’s death scene and the official augment reveal, Garak and Julian Do Not talk about it directly for a long long time, but Julian does pointedly assign Frankenstein for their homoerotic book club lunch after Dr. Bashir I Presume. Garak is…Untroubled.
(“Monstrous fathers create monstrous sons all the time without ever resorting to anything so dramatic or crude as lightning rods and graverobbing, my dear Doctor. Why, in some families it’s practically a tradition. A family trade, honed to perfection over the span of generations.”
“Yeah?”
“Could anything but such an iterative process explain the existence of Skrain Dukat, do you think?”
“Hah! You know what, you may have a point.”)
It’s about. The mutual ‘We may both have been made into different kinds of monsters at the hands of our fathers and yeah I guess that kind of sucks. But at least at the end of the day neither of us is Gul Dukat’ emotional security of it all

Chapter Four: Apple Cider
“Rina, you lied to me. You make it sound like you teach the spawns of satan but all these kids look absolutely adorable.”
“They are spawns of satan,” Rina hisses quietly, making sure no other teachers can hear her. You shake your head in disbelief. “Of course they are on their best behavior now. Nobody wants ISS.”
“Well I think that they are adorable. I mean, there’s mini Princess Tiana and tiny Jack Sparrow. That’s a crossover I never thought I would see,” You point at the kids who came dressed up for the fall festival. There were different booths open, from games, to food, to arts and crafts, and apparently the school had a special surprise as the finale.
“I guess they’re not all bad,” Rina grumbles.
Three kids walked up to Reyna’s booth, their costumes bringing a bright smile to her face. The child in the middle looked familiar to you but you couldn’t quite put your finger on it.
“And what can I get the vampire queen, Frankenstein, and the werewolf today? I have caramel brownie bites, mini cinnamon rolls, and peppermint bark. Oh, and I also have apple cider,” you display.
“I’m Frankenstein’s monster. Mary Shelley never gave the monster a name,” says the kid in the middle. Your eyebrows shot up in surprise.
“You’ve read Frankenstein already? I didn’t have to read that until high school,” you blink. The little kid just shrugs his shoulders.
“How much do we have to pay you? I would like some brownie bites,” says the vampire queen. She has a hand held mirror and checks her fangs in it.
“It’s all free. Just let me know what you want.”
“Then I want one of everything and some cider!” Says the werewolf.
“Yuji, leave some for other people.”
“What? She said it’s free,” Yuji looks back at you and you nod your head. “See Nobara!”
“Fine. I’d like to have a brownie bite and peppermint bark then. What about you, Megumi?”
Megumi was about to order until he read your apron. It was the same flourish of cursive letters that he had seen on the boxes his dad brought home. His eyes narrow suspiciously, pointing his finger at your clothes.
“Are you the owner of Love Bites?”
You chuckle nervously. “Yes…why?”
“And you’re dressed like a witch?”
“The Wicked Witch of the West, yes.”
“Megumi, you might be right. She really did curse your dad,” Yuji says with a mouth full of brownies. Megumi scowls at him, but his face looks so much like his father that you had to hold back a laugh.
“So you’re Toji’s son? It’s lovely to meet you. I promise, I did not curse your dad to be a slave to my baked goods.”
“Yeah. You haven’t given him your cookie yet,” Rina whispers in your ear, making you smack her arm.
“My dad was eating a jelly donut once, your jelly donut. He has never eaten those before. The jelly fell on his pants, and he just stared at it for a really long time. I think the sugar is rotting his brain since he keeps on going back to buy more.”
You snort but you couldn’t get mad at the child. He says everything so matter-of-factly you almost felt compelled to agree with him. “How about you taste one of my treats and you can come to your own conclusion?”
Megumi narrows his eyes again, but the pretty lady didn’t set off any alarms in his head. He takes a caramel brownie bite and takes his time to really chew it. You, Rina, Yuji, and Nobara stand in anticipation as you await Megumi’s verdict. After what seemed to be ages Megumi swallows and looks back to you. You lean in close when he opens his mouth to sigh.
“I don’t hate it.”
You turn and high five Rina while Nobara hands Yuji a one dollar bill. “I told you he would like her eventually,” he smirks. Nobara shakes her head in despair and clings to Megumi’s shoulder. “What happened to your cold heart? I just lost money because you want to be nice.”
“I may be a hater but I won’t be a liar,” Megumi grumbles, taking a cup of apple cider to wash down the snack.
“I’m glad that you liked it,” you swell, and Megumi really couldn’t get himself to dislike the mystery baker lady like he had planned to.
“Megumi, there you are!” Huffed Toji. He was in his customary black suit, except his hair was pushed back and you couldn’t help but to stare. Toji’s eyes bounced between Megumi and Reyna, and then to you and Rina, then back to Megumi. He nods to you before turning his attention back to his kid.
“The fireworks are about to start,” Toji said carefully. “Let’s go get a good spot.”
Megumi could tell the nervous look in his father’s eyes as he looked at you like he wanted to say something but couldn’t. Frankenstein’s monster turned to look at you. “Do you want to come with us?”
You start to decline but Rina jumps in. “I’ll take it from here. I’m not a fan of fireworks and I see them every year. Go, have some fun,” she winks.
You look at Toji and he looks hopeful. He sees her wearing the earmuffs and beanie that he had bought you a week before and he smiles . Not a wide, opened mouth smile, but you have studied his facial expressions long enough to know that he was beyond happy and you blush, following them to an open spot on the field. The kids trail in front of the two adults and whisper among themselves.
“Megumi, your dad should be holding her hand. Why isn’t he doing that?” Nobara hisses.
“He’s a slowpoke that’s why. Why do you even care?”
“She’s pretty and she can bake. We’d be dumb not to like her,” Yuji answers. Megumi scowls at them but before he can answer the fireworks start.
When everyone’s attention is focused on the glittering light show Megumi looks back at his dad, and sees that you are standing much closer to him than before. He squints, noticing that you have your pinkies entwined together before fully enclosing each other’s hands, and when Toji’s eyes fall on his son’s, he gives a father a sharp nod before turning back to listen to his friends try to shout louder than the fireworks.

@spicymangoman this is such a thought provoking question (re: my jeffrey jerome cohen's monster culture (seven theses) post)
i think the shortest answer is that the monster is polysemic; it is a sign with multiple simultaneous interpretations and meanings. ocean vuong writes that a monster is a "hybrid signal"; any contradictions it may hold are, in some way, part and parcel of being a monster.
the monster does often introduce category crisis regarding the difference between self and Other! this is an extremely common monstrous trope:
the hivemind is the most obvious example of a monster that blurs the boundary between self and Other
the blob also comes to mind, as an Other which quite literally threatens to incorporate the self into its body
through the same logic as the blob, we can see this same threat of the self being annihilated and incorporated into the Other through any monster that engages in cannibalism or consumption
(i'm currently researching The Haunting of Hill House and boy howdy is that theme present)
infectious monsters (vampires, zombies, werewolves) pose a similar threat, the Other whose influence may cause a loss of selfhood and subsequent incorporation into a noncontiguous monstrous body
frankenstein's monster and shapeshifters both challenge the stability of the self, or the self as a singular, knowable body, thereby posing a problem for the self/Other binary
we must also keep in mind that the Other represented by the monster is quite often a coded representation for the racialized, gendered, sexed, classed, etc. other. i think that here we find a general anxiety of category crisis with regard to "you look like me but you're not me" and the differences then being exaggerated through the monster's nonbinary and excessive body
so, while the creature from the black lagoon or guillermo del toro's amphibian man do not pose these same threats of losing the self to the monster, they still represent a sort of me/not-me problem through their anthropomorphism alone (while simultaneously standing in for the racialized, "savage" other)
cohen also writes that "one kind of alterity is often written as another", meaning that not only do the metaphors within the monster often overlap, but the monster often troubles multiple binaries at once. he gives the example of the cynocephalus, a human with a dog head and intersex characteristics, thereby sitting at the border of human and beast as well as the border of male and female
regarding category crisis, cohen writes that the monster "defies easy categorization" and continues:
This refusal to participate in the classificatory "order of things" is true of monsters generally: they are disturbing hybrids whose externally incoherent bodies resist attempts to include them in any systematic structuration. And so the monster is dangerous, a form suspended between forms that threatens to smash distinctions.
i would say that the monster's nonbinariness stems, in some ways, from the fear of the unknown, and more specifically the fear of the unknowable. by existing across binaries and disrupting systems of classification, the monster presents a challenge to defining it and knowing it
knowledge is typically the antithesis to fear. Alien and Child's Play both rely on the audience not catching full glimpses of the monster, utilizing a half-seen, in the shadows, out of the corner of your eye aesthetic to maximize fear. the first step to solving a monster of the week episode is mulder or giles defining the monster. the longer the monster challenges knowledge, the longer it remains a threat, a danger, and an object of horror
similarly, the fear of the Other is a fear of the unknown, because the body outside the self can never be wholly, comprehensively, reliably known. in my opinion, this is probably the source of that overlap in the metaphor: the monster embodies category crisis and the dread of difference due to their common roots in the fear of the unknown

I'd like to introduce to everyone this horrid thing I created about a year ago but haven't shown many people yet (probably for the best).
Tumblr media
This is Baby. AKA The Monster. AKA Sight Tremendous and Abhorred, AKA Vile Insect, AKA A Thing Such As Even Dante Could Not Have Conceived, etc, etc. It's made from bits of scrap fabric I scrounged from various sources and is roughly the size of a human toddler. Its design is based on Mary Shelly's original descriptions of Frankenstein's creature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that's not all! Behold!
Tumblr media
You can dissect this little abomination to reveal a full set of crocheted, knitted, and scrap fabric organs, all hand-stitched by yours truly!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It has a heart, stomach, lungs, liver, small and large intestine, kidneys, bladder, and, of course, a brain! So it can ponder the horrors of its own existence!
Tumblr media
I used this pattern by Less Than Three for the heart. I ended up felting it because I screwed up most of the stitches (I was relatively new to crochet at the time). The result was a bit of a blobby mess, but oh well.
So yeah. This thing lives in my house now (my family hates it). I have yet to reap the full consequences of my hubris.
