You can always tell when someone is Young because sometimes a twenty-eight year old man who has obviously not engaged with any contemporary westerns will say something like “the story of what it meant to be Black in the west in the 1800s hasn’t been told,” absolutely disregarding that he is, in fact, standing on the shoulders of Common who was number 3 on the Hell on Wheels call sheet for four years; Jonelle Allen and Henry G Sanders who as Grace and Robert E on Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman explored what it meant to live, love and persevere in the face of daily--and occasionally extremely violent--racism; Rick Worthy in the criminally short-lived Magnificent Seven show; and the unique, complicated and meaty characters portrayed by Richard Grant, Cleo King, Franklyn Ajaye, and Omar Gooding in Deadwood.  

Where Walker: Independence may surpass these other shows is in their writer’s rooms; it will be interesting to see who is getting to tell these stories, and how that changes things.

Franklyn Ajaye (born May 13, 1949) is a stand-up comedian and actor. His nickname is "The Jazz Comedian" for his distinctive jazz-inflected style of delivery, timing, and astute use of silence. He is known for his role as Spider Mike in Convo. He has released five comedy albums to date: Franklyn Ajaye, Comedian, I'm a Comedian, Seriously, Don't Smoke Dope, Fry Your Hair, Plaid Pants and Psychopaths, and Vagabond Jazz & the Abstract Truth. The last two were recorded in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. He made his network debut on The Flip Wilson Show and made his first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson a year later. He emigrated to Melbourne but returns to the US periodically to do work on television. His last American television appearance was on Paul Provenza's The Greenroom. He is known in Australia for his appearances on The Panel and Thank God You're Here and for his popular one-man shows "Nothing But The Truth", "Talkin' Vagabond Jazz", and "Vagabond Jazz & The Abstract Truth" at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He has worked as an actor, appearing in films such as Sweet Revenge, Car Wash, Convoy, Stir Crazy, The Jazz Singer, Hysterical, Get Crazy, Fraternity Vacation, Hollywood Shuffle, The Wrong Guys, The 'Burbs, and American Yakuza. He appeared on an episode of Barney Miller. He has been seen more recently in the TV show Deadwood as Samuel Fields and reprised that role in Deadwood: The Movie.
