#Fs in the chat for Class 1-A.
Note
so, i just started playing swtor, and u are the swtor person on my dash, so i was wondering if u have any advice? like, if u play with people, how do u get people to play with? how do u balance making an oc with the predetermined story that it gives u? anyways, thank u for your time and i hope u have a wonderful day
hey did you know i love you. very much.
advice…. (1) dont take this game seriously!! dont sweatshop it! just. literally take things in at your own pace. dont worry about getting every questline, dont worry about “right answers”, dont worry about perfecting Anything. it can be SUPER overwhelming to see everything shiny flashing at you, a bunch of phrases and buttons, its. a lot. but it will come naturally in time
UM. there are ways to join up in groups if you read general chat (I DO NOT REC READING GEN CHAT) but also there are groups called guilds! and to put guilds simply, theyre just “official”/created groups that get you extra perks and gains. most guilds will have a discord server to join in. there are diff kinds of guilds for diff events, too!
balancing an oc w the story it gives you.. just accept youre going to be op as FUCK. and have fun with it!!!! you are literally going to be the most godmodded mf in any room in the story, dont even try to fight it. you can do literally anything you want. my agent, which is a non-fs/tech class, is my most powerful force sensitive. LMAO
AND ALSO MY DMS ARE OPEN ALL THE TIME, OR IF YOU WANT MY DISC I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SLIDE THAT YOUR WAY

OKAY STOP
So I’m finally watching AoS again after being scarred from 5x14 (and knowing what happens in 5x22) and I’m on 5x16
And I’m at Jemma’s “experiment” with the hydraulic fluid and water and Fitz screaming “JEMMA” and banging on the glass when she is acting like she drank the hydraulic fluid is literally JUST LIKE HIS SCREAM THROUGH THE LAB DOORS ON THE BUS DURING FZZT
IM FINE (no I’m not)

FitzSimmons headcanons that live in my mind rent free
Academy Days:
During their time at the Academy, there were SEVERAL times they both fell asleep in one of their beds because they were up so late studying/working on projects.
like they hung out in each other’s dorms all. the. time (except when they were in the lab)
Jemma always sat in the front row in the classroom.
Fitz never did (except if it was a class him and Jemma had together, then he was right there next to her).
After FS became friends, they, without fail, would bring the other up in every conversation they had with their parents.
So much so that both sets of parents became suspicious (in a good way) of the other young cadet their child was spending all their time with.
When Mrs. Fitz met Jemma for the first time, she IMMEDIATELY loved her.
Mr. and Mrs. Simmons felt the same way about Fitz after meeting him for the first time.
Both sets of parents eventually got each other's numbers and definitely talked about their kids and how they shipped them together.
Growing up, Fitz took apart and put back together nearly every machine/contraption in their house
However, Mrs. Fitz didn't mind... most of the time.
Skip ahead/Future:
FS had one other kid after Alya, probably another daughter.
The shield fam are Aunts/Uncles to the FS kids (Aunt Elena/YoYo, Uncle Mack, Aunt Daisy, Uncle Daniel, Aunt Bobbi, Uncle Lance/Hunter).
Except for May and Coulson who are more like a third set of grandparents.
The shield fam has a group chat with the whole team in it (Jemma, Fitz, Daisy, May, Coulson, Mack, Elena, Bobbi and Hunter).
Jemma constantly sends photos and videos of the kids to said group chat, and they demand more if she hasn’t sent any in a while.
The FS kids are 100% spoiled by the team.
Alya definitely had a monkey themed nursery when she was a baby.

Looking to improve his astronomical sketches (and keep human interaction to a minimum), Dazai enrolls in an introductory art class. Only to get partnered up with a fiery, outspoken art student whose smile lights up the entire room and who’s as skilled at sketching as he is at making Dazai’s heart burn (with annoyance, of course).
What’s the reason Chuuya’s even taking this class? Why does he have to suffocate in that chibi’s presence every single week for not one, but two hours? And most importantly, when the moon hits Chuuya’s eyes like a big pizza pie, is it amore or is it a personal attack on his very existence since the universe obviously knows about his crush and chose this exact moment to sabotage him?

Perfectly Perfect: Chapter  1 (Self-Insert fic)
Title: Perfectly Perfect
Rating: Teen for swearing(That didn’t take long but it’s not a lot)
Relationship: Steelbeak x Self Insert Lexi
Genre: Family/Friendship and eventually Angst and Hurt/Comfort
Chapter Summary: Steelbeak is here and we chat about teachers that sucked when we were kids.
Other: Nothing that I can think of.
Author’s Note:
Just a quick chapter. I’m trying to think of filler related things before the angst and pain starts in a couple of chapters. Which I’m going to try and make be chapter 10 when it happens.
I will forever headcanon that OG Steelbeak is New Steelbeak’s dad. But instead of working with FOWL, he was some Crime/Mob boss and it’s how he lost his beak. Which is ironic that both lost their beaks for one reason or another.
Prologue - Last Chapter - Next Chapter
It was an average Spring day in April 2019 when Black Heron sent Steelbeak to the library to grab a few things. Apparently there was some books there that FOWL needed. So she decided to send her errand boy to go get them for her.
Steelbeak stepped inside and groaned to himself. He was never really into reading when he was younger. Well, except for Darkwing Duck comics. He read those all the time. Much to his teacher’s dislike.
He looked at the list he was given and began looking for them.
As he walked by a table, he thought he saw that Dewey kid at a different table only in red this time. But he didn’t get the chance to think about it for very long when a noise distracted him.
Looking down, he saw someone had smacked themselves in the face with a notebook. Chuckling, he walked over so he was leaning on the chair next to them.
“Bad day, babe?” Steelbeak asked.
“You can say that.” I replied with my pointed ear pinned down and not looking up from my notebook.
“What are you doing?” Steelbeak decided to ask.
“I forgot how much homework sucked.” I put the notebook down and my ear lifted up again.
“You look a little old for homework.” Steelbeak stated the obvious.
“Let’s just say I went to college, quit after a year or so to help raise my nephews, and finally started going back recently.”  I said.
“Ooooh!” Steelbeak started. “I got ya.”
“I also forgot how teachers can be dicks for no reason.” I added.
“Oh don’t get me started. I hated just about every teacher that I had as a kid. Then again, it probably didn’t help how often I fought with my teachers and the other kids.” He gave a small quiet chuckle. “I lost track on how many schools I was kicked out of for fighting.”
“Wow.” I stated.
“I know!” Steelbeak said and kneeled down a little. “Wanna hear a story about one of my worst teachers that I had?”
“Sure.” I nodded.
“So I was maybe 9 or 10 years old, right? I did awful in things like Math and Science and had this woman as my teacher for both one year. I think those two classes were back-to-back even.” Steelbeak started. “For some reason she refused to give me help in those classes. And was constantly calling me out in front of the whole class. Hell, the other kids started calling me names like ‘stupid’ and she did nothing about it since she called me it herself too and even started it.”
“Please say she got fired.” I said.
“Nope. Never got fired for it. I got kicked out for fighting her one too many times though.“ Steelbeak continued. “Another thing that happened was that some kid was crying for getting a B and this same teacher told her to be happy she wasn’t like me and getting Ds and Fs! It wasn’t the only time she mentioned my grades out loud.”
“I probably would’ve fought her too for being a mega bitch.” I replied.
“Really?”
“Nah.” I smiled. “I didn’t get into fights like that. But it definitely would’ve pissed me off if I had a teacher go THAT far. Now I’m glad my kids are home schooled now.”
“Did you have teachers get on your nerves like that?” Steelbeak asked.
“Yeah I did. I remember in 4th and 5th grades, I had this teacher bitch at me nearly every day. When I found out she was my home room teacher for 5th grade, I dreaded that school year before it started. Only upside is that my class had two desks side-by-side for our books.” I replied.
“What did she bitch at you for?” Steelbeak asked, sitting down beside me.
“I went to a private school and had to wear skirts along with pants. She kept yelling at me about my skirts being too short despite classmates and kids both younger and older having even shorter skirts than me. Plus, I was constantly growing during those two years and had gotten new skirts in 4th grade. Let’s just say those things are expensive as Hell. Even back then.”
“Did any other teachers give you trouble about it?”
“Nope.” I shook my head. “That’s why I never did anything about it. She was the only one to give me problems so I chose not to get new skirts to make her happy. If other teachers and the principal said something, maybe I would’ve done something different.”
“Good for you. Honestly, I probably would’ve picked fights with her every day like my own teachers.” Steelbeak shrugged. “That said, I don’t even remember many from high school. In fact, I actually dropped out completely when I was 16 years old and left home.”
“How did your parents feel?” I asked.
“My folks didn’t like it. But then again, my dad’s an asshole and I never did anything right in his eyes. My mom, eh….she wasn’t much better.”
“That really sucks.” I replied, not knowing how to take in that info.
“Don’t worry about it. It was years ago. I haven’t seen my parents in a long time but I did turn into my dad a little bit.” He tapped his beak. “Never told me what happened to his original beak before he got a prosthetic but I doubt he did the same thing that I did to mine. Personally, I‘m pretty sure he was some crime boss. You‘re lucky you got two families.”
“How do you know?” I questioned, humorously.
“Well, you’re a Dognose. So obviously you have a Dognose family. And I’ve seen you with McDuck’s family all the time. Are you like some bonus family member or something?” Steelbeak asked.
“Yeah. I guess you can say I’m an honorary family member since I grew up with his niece and nephews. He took to calling me his niece one day and he‘s been my Uncle Scrooge ever since.” I said.
“See? You got two families. You make stuff like that look easy. I mean, I did have friends growing up that liked things like Darkwing Duck. But it didn‘t last in high school.” Steelbeak rubbed his face.
“Trust me, I always had social anxiety growing up and was lucky to meet Donald and Della. I’m pretty sure Donald and I only became best friends because we both have speech impediments. So we knew how the other was feeling with our shared insecurity and bonded from that. Della was a bonus best friend that happened to be a girl too.”
“So would you have been able to make friends or gain a second family without them?” Steelbeak asked.
“Fuck no.” I replied.
“Well,” Steelbeak laughed then someone shushed him so he quieted his voice a little. “I guess that made me feel a little bit better.”
“Surely you have friends now right?” I asked.
“Yeah!…Kind of… Depends on what you consider coworkers to be. Especially if they call you stupid and constantly muzzle you. I‘m NOT stupid, by the way!” Steelbeak replied, folding his arms.
“Didn’t say that you are.” I frowned. “Doesn’t sound like friends to me. I mean, playfully calling you dumb is one thing, being full on serious is another. Especially if they muzzle you.”
“Have you ever been called it before? And are you still bothered about your speech problem?” Steelbeak asked.
“Not as much now as I was when I was younger. If you meant stupid, I don’t think I’ve been called it straight to my face. But I know my teachers thought it all the time. Especially my math teachers.” I held up the notebook I hit myself with earlier and showed it saying MATH on it.
“I agree, Math is the worst.” Steelbeak chuckled. “Now I understand why you smacked yourself earlier. But come on, I doubt you did worse than me.”
“I beg to differ. You weren’t the one with an undiagnosed learning disorder so everyone thought you were legit stupid when it came to all things Math. Well, I’m pretty sure I have a learning disorder. Those tests didn’t exist as a kid so who knows. But the one I think I have makes so much sense.” I said.
“Oh really? What is it?” Steelbeak asked.
“It’s called Dyscalculia.” I replied. “It basically involves having a hard time with concepts like time, mainly analog clocks, and measurement. And not being able to remember concepts, rules, and formulas.”
“Do you think things would be different if you knew about it as a kid?”
“Probably not.” I shrugged. “It wouldn’t of changed how I still did awful in math and better in History and reading.”
“Same here.” Steelbeak said. “I wasn’t into reading much as a kid but it was definitely the easiest subject for me. History wasn’t so bad either. What type of books did you read?”
“Mainly things involving supernatural or paranormal. What about you?”
“Like I said, I didn’t read books much.” Steelbeak said.
“You mentioned Darkwing Duck, right? Did you read the comics?” I asked.
“Oh yeah! I read those all the time! Did you read them?” He asked.
“Not really. I’ve been rewatching the show with my buddy, LP.” I said.
“…You mean Launchpad?” I nodded. “Huh. Didn’t know he was into Darkwing too.”
“You know him?” I asked.
“Sort of. We met… in passing one day and I heard the kid over there talk to him. Only he was wearing blue.” He pointed to Huey.
“That was probably Dewey. Huey wears red a lot and is over there. Dewey wears blue. Louie, the third triplet, is usually wearing green.” I said and he stared at me. “What? I did help raise my honorary nephews… so of course I can tell which is which.”
“Fair enough.” Steelbeak replied with a shrug. “So what made you start school again? Was it because your kids are older now?”
“No. The boy’s mom is home now and found out I quit college over 10 years ago to help raise her kids. She basically forced me to go back.” I replied.
“And yet you’re still babysitting one of them.” Steelbeak said.
“The kids asked to come since they made their own book club. I don‘t mind watching them as I do my homework.” I shrugged.
“Where’s the rest of the kids at?” Steelbeak asked.
“Either home at the mansion or hopefully with another adult.” I said.
“Oh okay. Well, I better go look for the books that I’m here for before I forget.” Steelbeak said, standing up and taking the list out again.
After looking at the list, he frowned and looked around.
“Need help…?” I asked, noticing the look.
“Uh no. I can find them on my own. Thanks though, babe.” Steelbeak winked then walked away.

〈“We are the warriors, who learned to love the pain. We come from different places, but have the same name. We are the broken ones, who chose to spark a flame.” The Score, “Born for This”〉
⊱ ────── {⋅. 🔥 .⋅} ────── ⊰
“And now, we’re finally approaching the last obstacle and everyone had better tread carefully, you’re stepping onto a minefield!!”
Bitch, what?? Who the fuck puts a fucking minefield in a school competition? U.A. is on drugs, man. Maybe I shoulda played more Minesweeper growing up, I never once won a round of that shit, I’m so screwed.
“If you look carefully, you can see where those little bombs are buried, so keep your eyes on the ground, folks! By the way, those land mines are designed for the game so they might be loud and flashy but they’re not all that powerful~ Just enough to make you wet your pants!!”
“Get ahold of yourself.”
Damn it, Todoroki, I ain’t lettin’ you take first place, fam. I held my hand out, allowing flames to lick at my skin. The flames shot down into the ground before shooting in a straight line across the field, setting off mine after mine and clearing a narrow path for me to safely pass through. Pink smoke filled the air. Why did they have to choose pink? Of all the damn colors…
Bakugo went flying overhead, aiming straight for Todoroki. “Bastard! Your declaration of war… was to the wrong person!!” He aimed an explosion at Todoroki’s face, who easily dodged it.
“Just like that, a new student takes the lead! The media here is going crazy! There’s nothing they love more than an upset! Hey, hey, hey, the rest of the competitors are catching up, too! Can our two leaders fight each other and stay in front of the competition?!”
No, they can’t. I grinned, sliding underneath Bakugo when he jumped. “Later, losers!”
“Get back here, you bitch!!”
“No thanks! Wouldn’t want to ruin that sexual tension you and Todoroki got going on there!”
“Winchester has taken advantage and slipped into first!”
BOOM!!
Uhh, what the fuck was that? I glanced over my shoulder, seeing a huge cloud of pink smoke filling the back of the field.
“What’s with that huge explosion in the back?! That’s way more powerful than it should be!!”
Yo, I think U.A. really be out here trying to kill its students, man. Did they accidentally put a real fucking mine in with the fake ones? Something shot out from the smoke and my eyes widened. Izuku?!
“Incredible! What just happened?! Whatever the case, class 1-A’s Izuku Midoriya is suddenly in hot pursuit of first place!!”
Oh… oh, shit. That fucker is barrelling right toward us!
“The lead is his!!”
“Deku!” Bakugo took off after him with me and Todoroki in hot pursuit. “What the hell do you think you’re doing, huh?!”
“Look at that plot twist! Those two aren’t fighting anymore, they’re chasing Midoriya! That’s what having a common enemy will do in this competition! This fight is still far from over, though!”
Izuku is starting to lose momentum and is falling from the sky. Suddenly, he flipped in mid-air, slamming down the metal plate he had been riding on. It hit the ground directly between the three of us, smacking several mines in the process. The resulting blast sent him flying forward, covering us in pink smoke. I coughed a few times, covering my mouth and nose with my arm as I continued to run. Why the fuck does this smoke smell like a french hooker?
“In a stunning move, Midoriya has busted past his classmates from 1-A! I don’t believe it! He cleared that minefield in an instant! Eraserhead, your students are amazing!! What the heck are you teaching them?!”
“This has nothing to do with me. Each of them is powered by their own drive to succeed.”
“There you have it! Eraserhead is a terrible teacher!!”
“I’m what?”
I bit back a laugh at their antics. Poor Zawa.
“Who would have imagined at the beginning of this race that the climax would be a non-stop megamix of surprises?! The first to make it back to the stadium is the first place winner! Izuku Midoriya is our champion!!”
Todoroki passed the threshold, followed by Bakugo and me seconds behind. I leaned over, hands on my knees as I breathed heavily. Fuck, this is way more effort than walking to the fridge.
Izuku stared up at Toshi, tears in his eyes. Sheesh, kid.
“Deku… no way!” Bakugo clutched his left forearm, eyes wide as they stared at the ground. “Not again…!”
I frowned at his back, scratching my cheek. Should I try to comfort him? I’m still shit at that and it’ll probably just piss him off more… but leaving him be feels wrong. I cleared my throat, setting my hand on the small of his back. “Hey, Baku -”
He shoved me back. “Don’t fucking touch me!”
“Oi -”
“Leave me the fuck alone, Winchester!”
A bead of sweat rolled down my cheek. I don’t think he’s ever used my name before… I sighed deeply, walking away from him. He has a serious Izuku Midoriya complex, he’s gotta get over that if he wants to keep moving forward, but there’s nothing I can do to help with that. That’s all him.
“The contestants are pouring in one after the other! Let’s hear some applause for all of our competitors as we prepare the results!”
“The first game for the first years is finally over and what a game it was!” Midnight grinned as the students gathered in front of her. “Now, let’s take a quick look at the standings, shall we?”
Tumblr media
Eh, fourth place ain’t too bad. Hiryuu got thirty-firth, yeesh.
“Only the top forty-four will advance to the next round, but don’t be too let down if you didn’t make the cut, we’ve prepared other opportunities for you to shine.”
I don’t like that sadistic face she’s makin’. Why is she licking her lips?!
“Now, the real fun is about to begin. The chance to fully move yourselves into the limelight! Give it your best!” She held her whip out to the side as the screen started to cycle through events again. “Let’s see what we have in store for you next! Will your wildest fantasies come to life?”
Not unless the next event is a taco eating competition where the winner gets a lifetime supply of Dr. Pepper and gets to meet Deadpool.
“What could it be? The waiting is torture.” She pulled her glasses down over her face. “Guard your loins and prepare for your next task!”
The only torture is listening to you, Midnight…
“Cavalry battle? I’m terrible at those…”
“You’re terrible at everything, Sparky, it’s okay.”
“You’re so cruel, Winchester!”
“Yeah, no shit,” I muttered, kneeling down and hanging my head. He’s totally right, I’ve been a complete bitch to everyone I’ve met, so how the fuck am I supposed to make it through this event? I glanced at Bakugo, but he still looks pissed off at the world, more so than usual. What am I gonna do~?
“I wonder how they’ll split us up.” Tsu wondered.
“Allow me to explain,” Midnight started, motioning toward that screen that displayed All Might being carried by Thirteen in the front, Mic on the left and Snipe on the right. “The participants will form teams of two to four people as they see fit. In theory, it’s basically the same as a regular playground game, but there is one difference – each player has been assigned a point value based on the results from the obstacle course.”
“I get it, a point-based system like the entrance exams. That seems pretty simple,” Sumo commented.
“So that means each team will have a different point value based on which students are on it,” Ochaco concluded.
“Maybe you should shut up and let me explain things to you!!” Midnight snapped, glaring at the two of them.
Midnight, you need to chill, it ain’t that serious.
“Now then, the point assignments go up in increments of five starting from the bottom. For example, forty-forth place is worth five points and forty-third is worth ten. And the point value assigned to the first place contestant is… ten million!!”
Uhh, I’m shit at math but I’m pretty fucking sure that’s way over what it should be. That’s a big oof, fam. I glanced at Izuku with sympathy as the color drained from his face. Everyone snapped their attention to him, eyes full of hunger. Can I get some Fs in chat for our fallen brethren?
“That’s right,” Midnight smirked. “It’s survival of the fittest with a chance for those at the bottom to overthrow the top! Those of you at the top will suffer the most. Of course, that’s something you’ll hear over and over again at U.A. Show us what plus ultra means!”
So, I’m worth two hundred and five points, huh? What a pain.
“First years, these are the rules that you’ll abide by! The game itself will last fifteen minutes. Individual point values will be added together to reach your team total. Everyone will know how much you’re worth thanks to your headband!”
“Wait wait wait wait,” I stood up, catching Midnight’s attention as I stepped forward. She looked annoyed at being interrupted. “I’m already wearing a more important headband, I can’t wear that.”
“You’re saying a logo for a taco restaurant is more important than the sports festival?” She cocked a brow, resting her hand on her hip.
“Absolutely,”
“I think you have a problem, Jen. Ribbit.”
“She’s cruel and insane.”
“But she’s so manly!”
“I don’t think calling a girl ‘manly’ is a compliment, Kirishima.”
Midnight’s eye twitched. “Silence!”
“What I’m askin’ is, does it have to be over my forehead?” I scratched my cheek thoughtfully. “Can I wear it on top of my head? You know, tied under my chin like Lupin III.”
“Winchester…” her eye twitched again.
“Or maybe tied around my arm like Shikamaru Nara? Maybe the wrist? But that would have to be wrapped a couple times.”
“Enough!” She slapped the whip through the air, pointing it at me. “Now listen here, you little -”
“Take that ridiculous thing off your head, Winchester.” Aizawa ordered with an exasperated sigh. “You’re not an advertisement, you’re a student.”
“I refuse,” I glared up at the commentator’s box, pointing my finger. “This has nothing to do with you, Aizawa!”
“Huh?” I could feel his glare. “Take it off or I’ll make sure Lunch-Rush never serves tacos again.”
“What kind of threat is that?”
“Y-You wouldn’t dare,” I stepped back, swallowing hard.
“Try me,”
Shit, he’s dead serious. “Goddamn it,” I reluctantly tugged the bandana from my forehead, stuffing it into my pocket.
“That actually worked?!”
Midnight sighed deeply, running her hand down her face. “If the two of you are done… Swipe as many headbands as you can to raise your team’s score! Stolen headbands must be worn from the neck up, so the more you steal, the harder it’ll be to manage them.” The board changed to show All Might with his neck completely covered by bands and looking uncomfortable. “And another thing – even if your headband gets stolen or your team falls down, you can keep playing until time’s up!”
“It’s anyone’s game, then,” Momo commented.
“And since there are forty-four contestants, there’ll be ten or thirteen teams fighting on the field the entire time,” Sumo added.
“Sounds hard…” French Fry commented, folding his arms over his stomach.
“So, if you lose your headband at the beginning, you have more time to make up a plan.”
“I don’t know, Mina. Maybe we should wait and see how the teams turn out before we start strategizing.” Tsu said.
“This is going to be rough. You may use your quirks as much as you like! But there are still rules. Make a team fall on purpose and I’ll slap you with a red card! You’ll be disqualified!! Now, you’ve got fifteen minutes to build your teams. I recommend you get started!”
Man~ Why’s life gotta force you to constantly interact with other human beings? Just let me be anti-social and live in peace with my tacos and unhealthy obsessed with Wade Wilson! I kneeled down again, hanging my head.

What are some myths about professors?
I follow a blog written by the author of a textbook that I use for my Media Writing students and today, his writing hit home. Vince Filak got it right when he said that students <mistakenly> think that 1) students are bothering the professor if they ask for help; 2) professors like failing students; and 3) professors don’t care. Let’s chat about these for a moment. I’ll keep it short and sweet but I want to be sure that you know these are myths. Vince Filak said it better but here’s a recap of his myth-busting but in my own words:
1) It is NOT bothering me if you ask for help. The last thing I want is for you to be confused about my assignments or have questions that go unanswered. I am more than happy to answer your emails, Zoom with you, or have you visit my office on Mondays (in Warwick). When you know more, you do better...and the same goes for me. The more I know about you and your situation, the more easily I can help. The only thing I ask is that you read the syllabus (if it’s a policy question) and that you thoroughly read the instructions for the week. If you still have questions after that, please reach out to me! Sometimes I find that my instructions are not clear (hey, I knew what I was talking about when I wrote it and put it up on Bb. Oh wait. It’s not clear? Yeah, that happens. Email me please!). I look forward to chatting with you.
2) There’s nothing I hate more than failing a student. Quite honestly, I usually agonize over it. What I love is when everyone is learning and making progress and passing my class. I don’t hand out A’s like participation trophies but nor do I take any glee in giving an F. I do have gripes about giving grades. For example, sometimes students are very grade-focused and want straight As for every assignment - I find that discouraging because being that grade-focused means that they are more concerned about the grade rather than actual learning. And like Filak said in his blog, sometimes students think that just handing in an assignment, no matter how poorly done, will get them a passing grade. It won’t. Not in my class anyhow. The bottom line for me is that if someone wants to pass my class, they put in an effort on their assignments and they come see me if they need help. Together we can almost always get you through my class with a passing grade.
3) I care. Boy, do I care. Most of my colleagues really care about their students, too. I know I’m biased but I think you’ll find that community college professors are different from their four-year university peers. I’m at a community college because there the focus is on teaching and learning. Not research. Not publishing books. Not giving out Fs. The focus is on the student and learning. I won’t go into details about the things I’ve done for students because then I’m making it about me. It’s really very simple. I care. But I can only help you if I know what you need from me and talk to me.
So from a communication prof, it’s probably easiest to leave you with this: communicate with me. When you do, we can almost always figure it out together.
Happy Fall Semester!
Prof Susi

Online project | #05 Roef Gerbang & 108
Round #05
Roef Gerbang  : RG
Guido Bisagni : 108
Their conversation will be presented in ways like chat record of social network
RG: Hi! Mr.Guido.My name is Cheung. I’m Meiko’s friend, so nice to meet you! Meiko said we could can make this conversation together,  so where can we start? oh, by the way, I’m a skateboarder as well!
108: Hey Cheung! How are you? Nice to meet you! I was a skateboarder! now I have 42 years old, I still have my skateboards, but it's better if I walk or I use bike :)
If you want we can start with something about skateboarding and art/stuff related to it! Like when and why you started to skate or something like that! I'm always super interested about it
RG: Yes,Mr Guido!let‘s start talk to Sk8,good choice!By the way, I’will be 39 years old till June this year!So in fact I‘m not young neither! But I still skate 2 or 3times per week, sometime 4. So I think Sk8 is good for healthy, keep ur legs strongI mean it can also keep you feel young,I feel like I’m sort of old monster try to grab the youth power in my hand!and that's why I keep skating.. I told Meiko:“thank you for introducing a Sk8 homie in Italy!I started to go skateboarding since 2016,at that time I worked as a illustrator in Ad company, one day a project which needed to look for some reference about surf,I thought surfing is cool, but I’m not living by the sea, then I noticed skateboard…I was just wanna a board that can cursing around, but when I step on it,I addicted into it,riding stuff can‘t satisfied me anymore, then Ollie,bs/fs 180,shuvit……and my Sk8 journey turn on?How about yours?
108:(Hey, sorry yesterday I uploaded too many stories and message section went out of control)
Heheh, nice to hear that I'm not "so old" so! Anyway, the past year I met two times my old friends, we went to visit a very nice place just out from our city called Skatefarm, it's like a DIY skatepak made by great skaters. Anyway, I'm not able to skate on a skatepark and I age made me very scared about it. I was a skater mainly in the 90's and we had just the street. I started to skate around 1990 with a plastic toy skatebord of my sister than I met new people. Some of them are still some of my best friends, It was not just about learning tricks, it was a weird way of life, I spent every day of my life on a supermarket parking for many years! Crazy, after the boom in the 80's during the early 90's skateboards became very underground and crazy, we dressed xxxl all the times and we were real misfits. For sure skateboard was one of the most important thing in my life, it changed everything. We were all coming from a low/mid class and it gave us the possibility to came out from our small city situation, through it I discovered all that kind of music I still like, graffiti, art, I became a vegetarian because I red a interview with Ed Templeton when I was 17 and still I'm, so for sure, skateboarding is part of me.

This photo is me in 1993 ? - So, I'm curious: for me skateboard was very important to know art and new kinds of culture: punk, graffiti, and than arts, video making and stuff! You came to skateboard through illustration is that right? It was a different process, let me know about that!
RG: Oh my god... ...the 90's ! The golden and glory 90's ! Mr Guido you’re the true legend ! Meiko told me before that you have been skated for very lonnnng time ! And so do you ! I really wish you can go skateboarding again in future even if only on flat ground ! I really admire that you can have awesome relationships with your guys in 90's ! Nowadays skaters in china , especially the Z generation don't connect with each other oftenly. Most of the time kids just put on ear phone and skate on their own . I do have a little friends who can skate together sometimes , but most of the time , I skate alone . But that's ok , I just yearn for the 90's and 90's people , that's all look at your photos seems like you can do flip trick... ... I still learning , to land my first Kickflip is so damn difficult..

Yeah, but actually I came to Sk8 through my last job , since then on I do put lots of illustration into it . And it is also my goal in future... I still need to make more skateboard art that can allow me to cooperate with skateboarding brands .
I also want to make skateboarding film , this art form can also let me use my art to do something with it , I’m working my first skateboarding film in process , it’s cost me nearly 2 years...

Hope my film can come out this year . last year I was planed it when I finish the film maybe take it to some skateboarding film festival but cause of coronavirus spreading to all over the world , now I don't know whether there's any skateboarding film festival will open this year?
I’m confusing now that should I save the film to next year when the world become normally and take it to festival ? or I just put it on internet this year...damn, so hard to decide!

I can only feel what I see and transfer them into my art style...I found sometimes when I feel extremely tired while I still working in front of computer...my eyes already closed at that time…but my mouse still working on photoshop...and I will suddenly wake up and saw a abstract image…

I 'm very curious about your art , when you working on them what are you thinking?
And what lead you through all that pictures till finished ? Instinct ? or the result of practice yourself so many years?I really like this your work (the photo below) because they are looks like butterflies, very beautiful…but the rest of them are too abstract to me? I can only figure out they‘re shapes with texture…but still look fun and mystery!

KU2 large pattern, by 108
I like this one… the patten line into a rule looks so coool! If it can be designed for shirts or trousers must be nice!Looks very high-class!
108: Wow, you are very good to skate! I'm not able to do anything anymore! hahaha, After 10 minutes my back is broken! I was able to do some filp tricks 20 years ago, I started during the "flat" times, so we were making a trick very low. The biggest problem is that in 97 I broke my wrist, and I went to the hospital after 3 months, hahah so, it's still broken. Sometimes it cause a lot of problems I can't do some kind of sports, I need the stick when I paint huge walls. I'm very very scared about it, if I fall on it I have to stop to work for months and I can't work. Anyway, I'm thinking about buying some bigger and softer wheels to ride a bit sometimes, we'll see! Here we are all inside home too.

About your questions
1) I 'm very curious about your art , when you working on them what are you thinking about ?
It's not easy to reply: I think about too many things, the core of my research is the form. I like forms, everywhere, in nature, old primitive art, design, everywhere. I love textures, colors, but mainly it's about forms and lines. there two parts: irrational/irrational, planned, random, geometrical/organic... I try to find a balance or a total contrast on the two parts.

2) And what lead you through all that pictures till finished ? Instinct ? or the result of practice yourself so many years ?
Some works, usually canvases are made with a first sketch, than I start to work and I change it, I don't like to plan, process is important as the final product. Other works, for example the black and white lines/patterns on paper or sometimes on walls, are more like a meditation. I decide some rules and than I follow those rules, trying not to think about anything, just focus on the process. I got a lot of inspiration from eastern art and philosophy, both aesthetically and conceptually. In fact I really like the connection between west and east, not just in art.

Every year I buy the annual subscription for the museums in my region, I go maybe 7-8 times in a year to see the Eastern art museum in Torino (MAO) I'm crazy for it, there is a big Chinese section, I need to search pics and I'll show you some my favorite objects!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

So, skateboard is something that came from US basically, now it's a global thing, but for me too it was something exotic. What inspire you, I mean do you find inspiration inside Chinese culture too? how do you mix the two things?
RG: Sorry, Mr Guido!Reply lately…I was thinking about how to answer your question better…
Oh my god, not realize that you have been injured so badly..:(
My wrist and ankle have problems too,and I also don‘t jump stairs for years…flat ground and stage are better for me, hahaha....
For the question: to find inspiration inside Chinese culture too?
Yes, of course I am. I do inspired by Chinese culture , especially from traditional Chinese painting...the ancients they had have rich technique of expression : the line can be separated into many forms, such as dry , wet , heavy , light and so on and colors as well , for example , if you wanna painting a pine tree ,before you painting the pine needle you should paint a color first , then before the color dry , you draw line on that color can make the two parts mixed well..
Tumblr media
“The leader“ illustration by Roef Gerbang
I also learn how to compose and leave “white space”?or should I say“blank space”(don‘t know the description right or wrong, but in Chinese called“留白”)from Chinese traditional painting, and really help me a lot, I pay more attention on form too, learn lots of things from not only Chinese traditional painting but old asian art.
I study how to control the line‘s rhythm, draw a line when going fast or slow down;how to make your art looks more interesting, more art sense will always be the lessons.

“Crow perched on willow tree in spring” , by Zhu Da (八大山人), Qing Dynasty
This work from famous painter of Ming Dynasty named:Zhu Da, aka. 八大山人(Ba Da Shan Ren)You can find that he got very special style to paint birds and another animals, and his art is too much different from other ancient Chinese artists
Look at these three unique tigers
Tumblr media
“Bee and tiger” painted by Hua Yan(1682-1756)
“Bee and tiger” this image is the detail of the painting, usually people can‘t see that bee, actually it’s on the right corner when you see the whole picture, and the tiger is not aggressive as usual, scared, the ears also fell down, bend the tail, afraid of bee‘s sting...
Tumblr media

Painted by Yanagisawa Kien (柳泽建) Japanese painter, Edo period, 18 century
I found these art works they always pursue some kinds of weird feel, not only copy the truth but more expressive force.

And this is also my goal, like I say more expression, more art scene. You noticed irrational, random, plan…I’m agree with you, I also like the process more than result, painting is more like adventure, like fishing, I like the view on the road more than arrival, enjoy more the fish bite the bait than cook them.

So let me ask one last question for you Mr Guido:how do you think about storytelling and abstract art relationship?Do you think is there any possibility to make storyline into abstract art?

108:Ciao Cheung! ￰ Thanks a lot for it, Chao is fine to me!!! And sorry for my late reply too!
I can say ni hao, it sounds not so different, but I'm not able to write it in chinese :(
Thanks a lot for your reply, for the artists and for the pics those tigers looks so "modern"! I'm very familiar with japanese art and culture, here, expecially my generation, we grew up with japanese cartoons on tv, manga, than music and stuff... I know that large part of japanese culture has roots in chinese culture, like zen buddhism or calligraphy, but for years it was very hard to be in contact with it., so I'm always trying to find out more about it and to understand it.
So..about your question: "Let me ask one last question for you Mr Guido:how do you think about storytelling and abstract art relationship?Do you think is there any possibility to make storyline into abstract art?"
First of all, I need to explain that I don't like labels. I mean, of course I use the word "abstract" to explain quickly what I usually do, but labels describes borders. I think in 2020 we have the possibility to explore many kinds of visual arts, many different medias... so yes, I think it's possible to tell stories with "abstract art".

I mean usually yes, my work is visually abstract but I love to put a lot of things in what I do. First of all I think that all my pieces are connected and there a lot of things inside them. Cinema (or video) is a very complete for of art: you have the image, a story, the sound... with pictures you have to put everything on a single image.

But there is more: I work also with sounds for example and sometimes I made some videos, but what fascinates me the most about any kind of art, is when it gives you a lot (ideas, feelings) but it don't gives you everything. I need some un explained parts, some shadows where I can enter and I start to imagine and to build my own world. What I like about some "not figurative" art is this kind of mystery inside it. But it can be also a movie or a photo or a landscape or anything else! I hope you understand what I mean.

RG: Mr Guido. Those characters you showed me that from MAO are the Tomb Beast…??In Chinese called“镇墓兽”. They‘re the guardians of tomb. In Chinese culture, people think that when people died(their soul)go to the other side of the world, there’re countless ghosts, evil spirits will harm the soul. So the guardians (have human’s face, beast‘s body) they can protect the soul stay away from the demon, and keep them safety.
108: Yes exactly! There are many of them! Amazing, they looks so modern and I like so much these kind of stories.
RG: Mr Guido, I think about our last talk “labels describes borders” couple of days ago…and it make me sense, like, portrait painting,still-life painting with very realistic technique will boring for me, it’s lack of imagination, but in the other way, if the portrait, landscape painting with simple and refining technique can make me watch for a long time. it‘s super cool tho..
So in fact I’m the guy just like you who searching for the shadows as well..:)
108: I understand very well! I love portraits, landscapes and still lifes too. But I enjoy when you can find something interesting on the way they are made. I like eastern art and modern art because usually feelings are more important than hyper realistic technique.
RG: Yes, painting should involve not only technology but also emotion.

New Reporting Metrics in ST Math https://blog.mindresearch.org/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Images/ST_Math_Bouncing_Shoes.png?width=800&name=ST_Math_Bouncing_Shoes.png
The ST Math you know and love is all new for the 2020-2021 school year, with exciting and innovative features for students, teachers, and administrators. This new version is here to make more learning happen: while distance learning, in the classroom, or at home.
MIND’s Senior User Experience Researcher Alesha Arp sat down to answer our most popular questions, share insight, and research knowledge for users to better understand some of the big changes in this new version of ST Math.
The New Version of ST Math
This new version of ST Math focuses on minutes students spend in the program and puzzles collected.
Each math problem is presented as a puzzle for students or solve, students collect puzzles for each level they master.
What prompted this shift to these as the primary metrics?
ST Math has continually improved ever since its inception. Over the years, we have added more games. There are now tens of thousands spread across our PreK-8th grade curriculum.
This sheer volume of content is challenging for a student to complete following the recommended implementation. On some of the more complicated Learning Objectives, which require more game levels to teach a concept, a student might not see their progress percentage advance at all in a week. And when they’re working on a particularly challenging concept, that can be disheartening.
Additionally, with this new version of ST Math, we set out to better empower educators to facilitate students. With a focus on a single large metric like percent progress, a teacher will see a student slip – but it’ll take several sessions before that slip is evident. How many percentage points off an average would a student need to be, before the teacher were to intervene? It’s tough to know.
With metrics displayed week by week and available for each student sign-in, a teacher can see a student slip, or surge ahead, the same day it happens. For example, if a teacher asks students to play ST Math for 20 minutes on Tuesday, they’ll see by signing in at the end of that day who put in their time.
Take this one step further and the teacher can see which students are on their expected pace and which are struggling with a concept, or are perhaps not using their time efficiently. Because students work at varying rates, it is expected that their puzzles collected in those 20 minutes will vary, which is why the program shows expected ranges. The teacher may also notice when a student ramps up their pace and is excelling at a concept, or is perhaps getting more help than they should from a peer, sibling, or parent.
Minutes, Puzzles, and Goal-Setting: Weekly targets useful for setting and monitoring progress toward goals.
You mention differentiation, how does this shift better support intervention and enrichment?
Again, students work at their own pace. Some students are thinkers who work through each puzzle in their heads and won’t select an answer until they are relatively sure of their choice. They then use the feedback animation to confirm their thinking.
Others are more willing to quickly hypothesize, choose an answer that seems to complete the puzzle, and then watch the informative feedback to learn why that answer works, or doesn’t. By viewing each student's minutes spent and puzzles collected each week, a teacher will soon notice these pacing differences. Average targets are provided with the student data in the program (pictured above).
Some students might need extra time each week to get through each concept, or only on those concepts that especially challenge them. This will also vary from student to student.
When a student seems to be really, really struggling with a concept, the teacher might want to help scaffold their learning. In the new ST Math that is easy to do by assigning a Learning Objective from a prior grade level, that builds that skill. It can be a great conversation between student and teacher to talk about how concepts build upon each other, and revisiting the building blocks is one way to use those earlier skills. The student might have an “aha moment” and return to the on-grade level Objective quite quickly, or they might need to review the full lower grade level Objective.
A teacher could enrich a student’s learning by assigning a more challenging Objective, perhaps from the next grade level.
New Reporting Structure
This new reporting structure appears to reflect the school structure with data starting with the individual student, and rolling up to the teacher, to school site administrators and coaches, and on up to district administrators, including curriculum specialists.
Data is generated by each student and aggregated upwards.
How might educators at each level use these primary metrics to inform & foster learning and implementation?
In all our studies back and forth across the country (before the COVID shut-down) administrators at the school and district levels shared that they wanted an easy way to see which schools and which classes were on target, and which were not.
Summary data is available beginning at the school level for district administrators, and at the class level for school site administrators. As we continue to roll out features throughout this school year administrators will gain the ability to dive deeper into more and more granular data. Goals can be tracked and adjusted at the student level on upwards.
Independent studies have shown repeatedly that the magic is in the minutes that students spend engaged in playing ST Math games.
Is it all about usage efficiency, or is there more to it than that?
It is about more than efficiency, more than just puzzles per minute. If numbers drop across a class (or a notable number of the students in a class), or across a grade level, a quick look at what content those students are working on could indicate they’ve reached one of those challenging domains for that grade level. Or it could indicate they’ve reached a concept where they need some extra support. Maybe they need to do a group lesson, like a puzzle talk or a Math Chat on that concept.
Class data for Learning Objectives
Having the data at a class level will enable educators to check on content covered at milestones throughout the school year. If the expectation is that all students have completed multiplication by a particular point in the year, the above data would let them know that this class was hitting that mark.
Actionable data is presented first as a high-level summary and gets more granular the deeper into the program an educator goes.
What are the advantages of layering data from high-level usage metrics down to per student-session granularity?
A program as data rich as ST Math can take time to learn. We designed this version for progressively rich implementations. On day one, the teacher just has to get their kids onto the program to start playing games. They can easily see who was successful, and who has opportunities for improvement.
As the beginning weeks of the school year unfold, teachers and administrators will begin to see trends in their students, classes, and schools. They can act on those trends straight from the summary data at each level, or they can dive deeper and look for broader patterns, isolated issues, peaks and valleys, or where best intentions fall prey to emerging priorities.
The data is actionable at the highest and lowest levels of granularity. When brand new to the program, you can successfully implement using the high level data. As the program becomes more familiar, usage can mature.
In this way, we expect our educators will be able to move from a purely “supplemental program” implementation to a robust “extended instructional” implementation over time. Some schools will get there in year 1 with this new program, while others will mature their implementations more slowly.
The beautiful thing is that effective student learning begins on day one with the simplest implementation acting upon the high level of data.
What information about the content, the Learning Objectives, is available to educators and students?
Across the country, students are expected to learn specific math concepts at each grade level.
Details about each Learning Objective describe the concepts covered and help educators employ ST Math as a powerful targeted teaching tool.
The primary unit of content in ST Math is the Learning Objective. Much like a textbook is made up of chapters, each grade level Journey is made up of Learning Objectives, which are made up of games, made of levels, and made of puzzles. Each puzzle is a math problem for students to solve. Every Learning Objective in ST Math includes at-a-glance information that tells educators what students will cover. This is especially helpful when a teacher needs to provide intervention or enrichment.
There is also a Games tab for each Objective that gives a brief description of the game, and direct access to each level. When a teacher needs to facilitate a student whose struggle has gone beyond being productive, they can open the exact level the student is playing on their own before conferring with the student.
This feature was also one of the favorites among our Innovation Team schools who beta tested this new version in 2019-20. They found they could easily locate an ST Math game, or even specific level, to teach a kick-off, strategy-sharing, or cap-off lesson for the units they were teaching.
In a program that allows self-paced learning, which is so critical to differentiated learning, this feature enabled teachers to use ST Math as an effective teaching tool to bring students’ focus to the same content in a whole group lesson and then turn the kids loose back on their Journey, or on an assigned Objective in that content area.
This proved especially effective during distance learning because the teacher could share their screen and ask students on their video-conference to share their different strategies. Using the annotation tool and animation controls, the teacher could demonstrate each strategy.
What are you most proud of with this new version?
User experience research has been pivotal in informing this new version of ST Math and in changing how we design here at MIND Research Institute. This has been a collaborative effort across every department in the organization.
Our empowerment, partnerships, education success, implementation, and support teammates were right there with us during the research studies, participated in internal studies, and provided incredibly valuable feedback about what worked well and what needed improvement from our prior version.
Our engineering and quality assurance team was working to build a strong, stable technology stack even before the first designs were inked and they have stretched themselves to their limits bringing this design to our schools.
Our data team painstakingly analyzed the data and validated that these metrics would indeed better support student learning and mathematical instruction.
Our R&D team encouraged and pushed this program toward ever higher efficacy and made sure the changes align with the neuroscience that is ST Math’s foundation.
Our content team of mathematicians, graphic artists, and animators have made this program a delightful way for teachers to teach and students to master mathematical concepts.
Our product team leaders have made sure the educator and student experiences are coherent and cohesive and designed according to our resources and timelines.
Our engagement team has shared the story of this design effort in podcasts, blogs, and in our social media feeds. This has helped us inspire more schools to participate in the research and to bring ST Math to their students.
Our social impact team has developed and nurtured key partnerships that have enabled this discovery, design, and development to occur.
Our professional learning and instructional design teams have burned the candle at both ends to get our teachers the training and resources needed to maximize their implementations.
Our leadership and operations team have supported us step-by-step. They have taken this deeper understanding of our partner schools and laid out a roadmap for MIND’s future and our schools’ mathematical competency.
And I’m most proud of my platform design teammates – Theresa Jones, Kris Zalameda, Jennifer Mansdorf, and Justin Templeton, under the patient and conscientious guidance of Paul Blair – who have iterated, and problem-solved, and tested, and gone back to the drawing board, again and again and again and yet again to make more learning happen and to ensure all students are mathematically equipped to solve the world’s most challenging problems.
