#Fuchsia x Steerpike

Text
The sudden realization that Steerpike first words to Fuchsia at their final meeting contrasts with the first one beautifully.
She finds him in the attic, but instead of making up a fantastical story about being an adventurer and discovering a pavement in the sky, he simply pleads "Help me. I'm starving."
It is true now just as much as it was then, when he was running away from the kitchens and in desperate need of a patron. Except now he is fully honest. The whole scene is about him being utterly vunerable towards Fuchsia for the first and last time.

Something poetic about Steerpike’s first literal climb to the peak of Gormenghast is that this is where he sees Fuchsia for the first time. Lady Fuchsia, in her secret attic, basking on sun by the balcony.
Now for someone like Steerpike who only knew the kitchens, this view represents a lot. It says where he wants to be and who is waiting for him there.

How about ♫ for Fuchsia and Steerpike? 💕
Oh you wonderful person <3
I chose to analyse the song below because follows their story in a perfect chronological order.
For my full Fuchsia x Steerpike playlist click the link.
I can analyse other songs for them as well (please please please ask for more)
Say When - The Fray
I see you there, don't know where you come from Unaware of a stare from someone Don't appear to care that I saw you and I want you
Tumblr media
And everyone is rising to meet you, to greet you Turn around and you're walking toward me I'm breaking down and you're breathing slowly You say the word and I will be your man, your man
During countless useless rituals which the royal Family is bond to attempt, people remember Fuchsia exists if only to pay respect and proper courtesy to a Goran. Fuchsia tolerates it as she was taught to. Her mind is not on them anyway. It’s on the last minutes of ceremony when deccurum will be less strict and she will be allowed short but exciting moments of talk with a certain kitchen boy, her clown of the clouds. His snaky face would never betray it, but she is the only one in the room he is craving to see as well.
We're coming close and then even closer We bring it in but we go no further We're separate, two ghosts in one mirror, no nearer
He seeks her in her solitude. He finds her mostly in the woods, singing made-up nursery rhymes to herself, spining her wild hair over her exposed shoulders from clothes that are too big for her. They speak, but barely talk. It seens like there is a bridge between them they can never fully cross. Even when she starts to agree to secretly meet him in the castle, the years of neglect or outright abuse and never knowing intimacy makes them both distrustful and cluesless on how to procced. Even Steerpike, who takes the most iniative, acts by-the-book on the rules of romance: flowers, poems, pets. A safe path to trade upon. A shiny garmet to distract Fuchsia from the otherwise lack of grace of her companion and vile nature that she is certain to spurn if she ever sees it.
They came from different worlds and yet were the same. He is a kitchen boy and she is a princess. By convenience they shouldn’t be together, but convenience always seems to work against them. The princess, in the most unpredictable way, is an outcast whom Gormenghast finds no use for and thefore is left to fed for herself. And although Fuchsia has not experience abuse like Steerpike has perse - as her material needs were being met - she was not cared for either. Unable to wear the crown for being a woman, she is worthless in the eyes of Gormenghast, and even her family makes her aware of it.
Say when and my own two hands Will comfort you tonight, tonight Say when and my own two arms Will carry you tonight, tonight
The first time Fuchsia embraces him it's by Nanny's grave. Estelle Daniel, Gormenghast’s producer, described the grave scene as follows:
"I think you understand in this scene that they actually do love each other. You know there is a real chemistry there. In a way, if Fuchsia were to have said, 'Look, let’s just get on a white horse and ride away from the castle together and just be lovers,' I think there are moments where Steerpike might almost have agreed."
Come across you lost and broken You're coming to but you're slow in waking You start to shake, you still haven't spoken, what happened
She asked to see beneath the mask, but turned away from him.
They're coming back and you just don't know when You want to cry but there's nothing coming They're gonna push until you give in or say when
He suffocates a cry after she leaves the room which he spend days decorating for her. Maybe it would feel good to cry, but after sucessfully holding it back for many years, he has forgotten how to. Remembering his purpose renews his resolve: "I'm gonna make them wish they were never born, or at least not born where they were."
Dr. Prunesquallor, Mr Flay, and his little lordship Titus are under his trail and soon everyone will know the real Steerpike and declare him a public enemy.
Now we're here, and it turns to chaos Hurricane, coming all around us Double crack throws you back from the window, you stay low
Everyone is talking about it. Steerpike, the snake - killed her aunts, and now Mister Flay. Steerpike, the runaway, is threatening the monarchy, her mother and brother. Steerpike, the rat - he is hiding in the dirts, in between the walls of Gormenghast. We must find him.
Turns out he is the one who finds her, by the window of her secret attic. This is where their story began and where it ends.
It all began with a man and a country Every plan turns another century Around again, another nation fallen Maybe God can be on both sides Of the gun, never understood why Some of us never get it so good, so good Some of this was here before us All of this will go after us It never stops until we give in
Jonathan Rhys Meyers described Steerpike's presence in Gormenghast akeen to being in The Truman Show: You can't get away. Most of you can do is control it. When Fuchsia and Steerpike dream of shaking these archaic walls or just being free from it, they are talking about fighting a strict unmoavable centuries old system of rigid hierarchy and nonsensical traditions that have made people living under it borderline eschizophrenic.*
*I know the characters over-the-top and theatrical manners can be seeing as such or as an artistic choice by the director, but I think it can be both
Barquentine tells the Queen herself that "even kings come and go - gormenghast remains". Gormenghast is an entity on itself, a giant monster and every character is in it's belly.
Steerpike could be the one to break the social order. He told her once he could not understand how there should be poor and rich. She dreamed of a shinny hero, she saw him now as a villain - he could be both. They can break the wheel together, because he is stronger now. With her, he is. For her, he is.

What is your ideal villain x heroine relationship?
Well first, there are Basic Rules(TM):
Must see her as a human being, not as a pretty object, disposable or replaceable. Examples of villains that don’t do this: Jabba The Hutt and Ming the Merciless
He must be clean. He doesn’t have to be pretty, just hygienic. Grima, from LotR, is ugly, but I still ship him with Eowyn, while Jabba The Hutt is just a disgusting worm.
He is powerful and talented; has to have some sort of confidence. I can pity him, sometimes it's even better when I do (like with The Phantom of the Opera) but some stalker movies make the character so realistically obsessed because he is an insecure and repressed person. This also has to do with not seeing her as an object. Most of the time they don’t even know why they want the girl, they are just searching for any replacement for the maternal love they didn’t get. They don’t think they are special, they would just take anything to fill the gap.
He can’t be willing to watch her die. This usually ruins the ship. I mean hurt her, okay, but to kill her would mean he thinks he can live without her. And if he thinks that, he better get into a deep depression and regret afterward, or be well-aware that he has dammed himself for the rest of his life. Leôncio from Isaura The Slave Girl, Bill from Kill Bill, Jack Devlin from The Net, and Frollo from NDdP do that.
Either the heroine wins or neither of them do. The villain must not triumph at the ending, keep the girl hostage and miserable at his side. Either he is redeemed or he is ass kicked. There is no evil triumph - nor in the sense that he gets everything he wants without reforming himself into a better person, neither in the sense that the heroine is corrupted and rules as mistress of darkness by his side. The most I can accept of a good character losing is that she loved him despite it all and after rejecting him, they both perish.
The ideal villain x heroine is when they are bond by their loneliness. Most authors believe the villain is always the hero's antithesis - the classic "Two sides of the same coin".
Maybe they share trauma, neglect - people think they are strange or too erratic. Maybe the heroine's willpower is walking the line of ruthlessness. Her power inspires fear in people, even in her, but the villain admires it.
Either way, they feel there are parts of them no one else would understand. That only they could know and love. That the villain, in an curious way, challenges her to become the greatest version of herself.
They would be the perfect match in different circumstances, or if the villain wasn’t so far gone. But he has hurt too many people and to forgive that would be impossible. Maybe forgiveness is not what he seeks. Maybe he just wants to be sure she will never leave him, the only way he knows how.
She hates him, but once again he is the only one who matches her. Examples of ships that do this: Steerpike x Fuchsia, Annie x the Teacher, Alina x Darkling, Reylo, Casey x Kevin...
Tumblr media
Other interesting premises:
They have a telepathic connection. A spell was cast on them and their hearts are connected. One can only die when the other does. They could even be born from the same womb at the same time. Like, they came to this world together; their destinies are intertwined oh no Nuada/Nuala.
They were childhood friends or met when they were younger oh my gosh I love this trope.
The heroine is socially acceptable in her sexuality, meaning she is not sexually active or she is a full-on virgin. The villain is comfortable with his own and teases her.
He never loved anyone before. EVER.
He is more invested than she is, or at least he gives in and expresses his feelings more than she does, showing her the possibilities and getting frustrated when she discards them once again. He will be willing to sacrifice everything for her while she will hesitate (Lizzie from The Blacklist) or will rather kill herself later (Lady Fuchsia Groan) than to be with the man she loves because of the moral boundaries, people who depend on her, the complete absurd of saving such a despicable person and etc.
Or else, let him be tormented. Let his feelings for her confuse and scare him. Let it be against everything he is and believes. Let her be a whore or heretic and he, a devotee. Let her be his family and he, in a position of power and prestige like a king or a millionaire, wanting the only thing he can’t have and would make him a joke to those who fear and respect him now. Let him stare at her intensely, without her knowing why, trying to kill or imprison her or send her away, only to succumb and confess his feelings. Let him be disgusted with himself for wanting her, blaming her, and then coming back on his knees for crumbs of affection from the one he has disgraced. Let his power be drained from him and delivered to the hands of whom he judged unworthy, to such an extent that he is the one to make the delivery. Let his feelings consume him to the point he doesn’t even know what he is doing anymore, things he never thought he was capable of; burning a city, destroying a kingdom, enslaving a galaxy.
BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT IS:
They defy each other. I like it better when the heroine is not naive and passive. They can fight mano-a-mano or play his mind games and schemes. Or she just has a mind of her own and won’t bend to his.

Problematic Ships Fanfic Recs
[Uptdated constanly]
LABYRINTH FANFICS
A Forfeit of Dreams, by KL Morgan
There are many books and scripts that are nowhere near as good as this Labyrinth fan-sequel. It is remarkably the only example that doesn’t contain absolutely none of the most common fanfic’s mistakes: The dialogues are believable, the characters aren’t OOC, there is fantasy, excitement, heartbreak and most of all, romance. Once you start reading it, you can’t do anything else until you finish.
Erlkönig, by Subtilior
The writing is just as outstanding as in a Forfeit of Dreams, but it gains the second place because it doesn’t try to stay attached to the original material, meaning it’s version of Jareth is much more scary and evil then the original one. If on one hand it wouldn’t work for a sequence because of this, on the other it allows a much more adult alternative universe. The thriller will make your skin crawl, the smut will probably ruin your sexual life, and, like in a Forfeit of Dreams, you won’t be able to stop it until you’ve finish it.
STAR WARS FANFIC
The Sith & the Senator, by Writtin In Stone
An Anidala AU which doesn’t require previously shipping Anidala from the Star wars Prequels to read it. It completely rewrites Anakin and Padme’s characters and their romance to a better version. Here they are bad-asses leaders fighting on opposites sides from the beginning, but Padmé doesn’t know that, which gives time for Anakin to feel her out and accidentally find in her what she finds in him: a soul-mate. The only problem is that what you would expect from this is her eventual discovery of Anakin’s nature and their breakdown as enemies who still love each other in the war which has been fermented from the start by the Sith Lord. But, after Padme’s conversation with her mother in chapter 22, the author makes it clear this won’t diverge from the common story of the regular couple trying to solve their problems in a everyday way and that the potential for star-crossed lovers in a war context is gonna be wasted. So just stop reading it before it gets bad and just do as I do: Picture as their battleships are in front of each other and they are looking through the glass towards the space outside, as if they could see one another. And Anakin is trying to telepathically reach her, trying to convince her to give up, to not force his hand, but she is just as determined as he is. Every time I think about how this story could have been, this song comes to my mind: We’ve come to far / to give up / who we are. Then I picture a private confrontation and they can’t hold back anymore and allow themselves to love each other for the last time, knowing fully aware that, by the morning, they will be foes again, trying to at least keep that moment. So inevitable, so all-consuming, aff.
The most unique thing about this one is the palpable unresolved sexual tension.
GORMENGHAST FANFICS
All the ones written by Thyme In Her Eyes. Try to picture being the only crew-member of a ship as far as you known. Try to imagine you have become so committed to the love story it literally has ruined days of your life and there is no fanart, no playlist, and no one related to it with who you can speak about it. Then you find a few fanfics and you already know that you will cry of joy even if they are a C, because it’s already a miracle they exist. Then you read them and you realize this is the best author you ever read per amount of quality fanfics produced and you know there is a God favoring those most in need.
These by Hobbity and Edmondia Dantes Redux are pretty nice as well.
GLADIATOR FANFIC
Lay your Head Down, by Savvy Sammy
3 delicious chapters taking place a little before and after Commodus threatens Lucilla and gives his memorable ‘Merciful’ speech. The incestuous kiss we’ve all being waiting for.
RED EYE FANFIC
Crossing the Line, by A Pisces Alone
Read only until chapter 9. After that, it stops being a prequel and gives Stockholm Syndrome to Lisa, which is never my thing unless the girl drops out of it very quickly. But, yeah, is a prequel to the movie from Jackson’s POV as he stalks and unconsciously falls in love for his prey. What I like most is the subtlety with which his feelings develop. Nothing is rubbed in the reader’s face, neither it needs to be.
ASOIAF FANFIC
As Blue as Love Can Be, by Menta
A petyr x catelyn multichapter in my native language, starting at their childhood and reaching the present events. You’re going to discover how easily the author develops spontaneous dialogues and memorable lines. Seriously, if you feed of Petyr’s anguish, you need to read this. Try google translator or some other online program if you don’t speak Portuguese, because you won’t be disappointed.
SAINT SEIYA FANFIC
Sleepless Ocean, by Lune Kuruta
An sexy one shot between secular enemies that became mythical lovers. Saori and Julian, the reincarnation of Poseidon and Athena, put an end to centuries of violence and repressed passion.
THE GUEST FANFIC
I Swear, by Faeriessence
Incomplete, but on point sequel to The Guest, in which David searches for Anna who is in witness protection.
Just a face in the crowd, by AlessiaLoanna
One shot which changes events at their final confrontation.
MULAN FANFIC
Kathun, by afterandalasia
Smutty time. When Shan Yu wins, he makes Mulan into his ‘empress’, just to see her angry.

Hi, i read your post about Steerpike and Fuchsia and got curious about why you ship them. Did you read the books or just watched the BBC adaptation? Did your read the news that Neil Gaiman will make a tv show of the series?
YAY!!!!!! A Steerpike/Fuchsia question!
No, I never read the books, and that is probably were the curiosity comes from. I’ve many times been warned that Steerpike is very different in the books (More like a sociopath) and his feelings for Fuchsia are ambiguous. That’s why I say I only ship them in the miniseries until I read the books and make my own judgment of that.
OMG! THIS IS FRESH, GOOD NEWS! I’ve heard the rumors this might happen years ago and recently google it, but found nothing! It’s been official for two days! YEEEES!!!!
I just wish they leave it explicit Steerpike loves Fuchisa like they did in the miniseries, nothing else.
Why I ship Steerpike x Fuchsia…
In a nutshell:
They are like the prince and the princess of a twisted fairytale. The kitchen boy and the Lady; the false knight and the jaded princess. Separated by different worlds, yet brought together as outcasts who did not understood or accepted Gormenghast. So close, and so far. They stay for years like this, just fermenting their love with stolen glances and meetings. Never daring to touch, not needing. Two lonely souls reaching out for each other. Doomed from the start and self-destructive, they could not avoid the things that torn them apart. She could not accept a murderer and the man who drove her father mad. He could not have chosen another direction but higher, above his brutal origin and closer to her. There was no other way this could have ended, and no other way this could have began.
In a rambling:
Steerpike is the villain of the story, but I find him sympathetic. In a word of traditions and aristocrats wasting time with crazy habits because they had nothing better to do, he was a symbol of rebellion and the result of the oppression caused by their society. In interviews, Neve McIntosh says that is what draw Fuchsia to him. He is simultaneous a fighter (So much he resolves to murder) and a beaten puppy you want to protect.
Fair to say, I’m but a very sucker for slumdogs becoming megalomaniacs who deep down are broken and alone (bonus if they disregard everyone on their way except the one girl they love): Heathcliff, Petyr Baelish, Loki, Gatsby… Steerpike’s ruthless ascendance to power reflects a overcompensation of a life being abused by the cooker and treated as inferior, and the resolve never to be put in that position again.
Of course Fuchsia could not accept his dark side, but he could not be the knight in shinning armor she has always imagine just like she could not be the all-loving princess of a fairytale. Her temper is unpredictable and she acts spoiled many times. She is how a dreamy young girl would become if she ever get to know what being royalty truly meant - that is pointless rules, isolation and no magic like in the stories - just as Steerpike is also a deconstruction of the slumdog hero. They weren’t perfect, but they were all they had.
They came from different worlds and yet were the same. He is a kitchen boy and she is a princess. By convenience they shouldn’t be together, but convenience always seems to work against them. What unites them is they earn for something beyond it. They long for change. Steerpike chooses weapons (extreme ones, but the only ones that could reach a extremely inflexible society) to try to make them, while Fuchsia tries to bare it by keep on dreaming. One might see it as weakness, but it actually takes her a lot of endurance. They help each other to keep on believing in something greater than those ancient walls through the years. They kept each other company against the emotional negligence they had endured.
Steerpike sees Fuchsia at the balcony of her attic and it’s immediately drawn to her. The first contact he has with her is very intimate; she doesn’t notice he is watching her from above. Then he enters her private place where she keeps the toys and stories she loves. That is where he seeks refuge for the night, and that is where she meets him for the first time: in her private world of fantasy. He lived in the kitchens most of his life, where girls are made ugly by work and stress, if there are girls at all. Fuchsia is different from everything he had ever seen. She has a sort of naivety he had lost from early age. No one that untouched by cynicism and conformity from where he comes. They play together and I think Steerpike likes to be part of the dreams he can not make since his innocence was taken from him, and recognizes in them the same need for something greater than Gormenghast.
