This Week in BL - It’s My Birthday!

April 2023 Wk 4

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Step By Step (Thai Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 2 of 10 (MDL says 12, but Gaga says 10) - Baby made a friend! Yay. I hope they stay friends. Up looks so good. Also, drama with exes! Excellent. This is awful grown up for a BL, esp a pulp. I think it may be more just a gay office romance than BL, but I love it no matter what.

La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 1 of 10 - I love it. Strange premise to get at the fated mates trope but it stars one of my top picks to get his own BL. Been waiting since TT2 for this boy to feature. Tai is cute. It’s good. Except the singing. But we can’t have it all.

Our Skyy 2 (Star in My Mind) eps 3-4 - Dao is THE MOST SPOILED. But clearly Kluen prefers it that way. This was cute, but frankly a little bit boring. Kluen is clearly Thai for whipped. 8/10

Future (Thai Sun YouTube & Gaga) ep 5 of 6 - they added an additional ep because, why not? It’s a soap not a story, it doesn’t matter. MOAR softness for usssss! Drama llama boys continue to be overdramatic to the point of melodramatic to the point of ludicrous-dramatic.

Pastsenger (Thai Weds Gaga) ep 8 of 12 eps - This is not as good as My Engineer but Marc makes for a much better pair with Cooper. It’s still not great but hey… and then HE PICKED UP A GUITAR. NOOOOOO!!!!!

A Boss and a Babe (Fri YouTube) ep 9 of 12 - Is that a character in a GMMTV show actually trying to communicate? Say it isn’t so! Did you notice in order to calm Cher down Gun dropped to pom to put them on a more equal footing? Sweet. Cher is a tiny idiot for taking the blame for some random other coworker. Why? Omg this show.

The Promise (Thai Weds YT & WeTV) ep 6 of 10 - So it was a real serious total kiss kiss with both very drunk. And that’s why he ran? Sigh. This show sucks. How can we root for this couple especially when the faen fatal (Boss) is THAT HOT and so sweet. (To be fair I can’t decide if I want Boss or his outfits more). Phu should just not come back, who needs him? So they really are going to just keep drawing this one premise out the whole show?

Tin Tam Jai (Tues Gaga & iQIYI) ep 9 of 10 - yawn

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Our Dining Table AKA Bokura no Shokutaku (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 4 of 10 - They are cutest EVER - charming and awkward and sweet. I love the way the state of the food is used as an illustration for the state of the emotions of the characters. The loneliness of heating up a solitary meal bought from a convenience store in the microwave. The joy of memory of shared meals. What a lovely show.

The Eighth Sense (Korea Weds Viki) eps 9-10fin - To be honest, I was dreading this one. JH is such a first-time love bebe. I liked how realistic everybody’s behavior was to the university age bracket. We even got some proper boyfriends phase which is too damn cute for words. I do not think that JW should have made up with his evil friend. I love the way JW’s shoulders relax the moment he sees JH. This was really good show...

One of the longest BLs Korea has given us and (like Blueming) it feels more atmospheric gay coming of age romance than strictly BL. It’s got a bit of an age gap, country boy/city boy, stellar acting, complex characters, and leads with good chemistry and tension. It’s a bit chewy and sticky and less perfect than most KBLs (do I detect a touch of Taiwan?). This one deployed BL tropes (messy eater, shoulder sleep, protective seme, there’s even some hyung-slinging) but front loaded them, with tons angst driving the 2nd half. This isn’t in the KBL bubble, there’s sharp edges and lots of triggers. For a BL the darkness of the content left me feeling unsettled but it did have a glorious ending and that counts for a lot. 9/10 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Happy Merry Ending (Korea Thurs Gaga) eps 1-2 of 8 - No shade (ha!) but I do think Leo would have been better in the role of the singer (SJ) but I’m okay with Dongwon. JH is a nice flirty bit of sunshine. SJ is clearly the most anxiety-riddled socially awkward broken baby evers. I’m not sure about this kinda angst, it’s not really my thing especially on the back of The Eighth Sense. Look, I’ve never been one for a fixer-upper. We shall see, I guess? This is the beauty of KBL, so short most of the time that it’s low commitment no matter my reservations.

My Story (Pinoy Sat YouTube) ep 3 of 10 - it’s fine I guess?

Naked Dinner AKA Zenra Meshi (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 3 of 12 - I guess the fetish matches are finding each other? How v Japan. Of course I like the conversation about names and protocols.

It’s Airing But ...

Love Syndrome (Thai Sat WeTV) stopped at ep 2 of 12 - I’m just not into any aspect of it (except Lee Long Shi and I can watch him in Tin Tem Jai) - saving to binge if the end is solid.

Venus in the Sky (Sat YouTube) pilot/tester?) 0 of 10 - not entirely sure what’s up with this one distribution-wise, but the pilot was classic university-set pulp. I hope it happens because the leads are cute with good chemsitry and I thought it was fun. However, this pilot holds together as its own little short too.

Make a Wish (Thai Weds ?) stars Fluke Natouch (OhmFluke UWMA etc...) & Judo (The Miracle Of Teddy Bear) in a medical-fantasy. About a doctor who sees ghosts and a deity who resides in a Bodhi tree that earns merits whenever he fulfills a wish, based on a y-novel by Sammon (Manner of Death, Triage). Same as above.

Stormy Honeymoon (Vietnam) - I’m tired of these characters

In Case You Missed It

Star Hunter dropped all their trailers for 2023 on their YT channel. Bit late in the year IMHO. Nothing really stuck out.

Big Dragon the movie = more of the same

True Moon = yet another loosely disguised attempt at the 2 Moons franchise?

Flirt Milk = standard pulp fodder, but they are cute

Acadex = The Eclipse + Destiny Seeker + Harry Potter 4 + The CW, as a movie that may not be BL

Sunset Vibes = Big Dragon pair as a one night stand but “uh-oh he’s my boss!” I’m game. Maybe it’ll have a better story? Maybe it will have a plot? Maybe... oh who am I kidding. It’ll be high heat and that’s about all we can hope for.

City of Stars AKA Fueangnakorn = An actor falls in love with a programmer and the narrative intends to “explore the ramifications of being public figure in the social network era who must endure critics, bullying, and defamation.” Looks like another Lovely Writer/Call It What You Want sort of thing.

The biggest shocker is how few they fielded of their original BL stable.

ALSO:

Love Senior = SOTUS but make it GL (I’m not mad about this one, it’s about flipping time. But it’s GL so I won’t track it, although I will watch it.)

5/1 House of Stars (Thai iQIYI) - An LGBTQ actor in love with an actor from another company, plus other wanna be stars all trapped in a doom house together.

5/4 Love Mate (Korea Viki) 8 eps- Office romance between a team leader and a new employee who agree to date for 3 months to find true love, from the makers of Our Dating Sim.

5/18 - Starstruck (Korea ????) - A boy has had a crush on his childhood friend for a long time. Stars Zuho (Kpop SF9 - noted Good Egg) opposite rookie actor Kim In Sung (as the one with the crush).

5/27 The Luminous Solution (Thai ????) 10 eps - Thana is having trouble at work and in his relationship. He can't seem to catch a break. So he makes a wish to change everything. But every wish has a price.

content: fluff, established relationship, reader & heizou work together, mentions of murder - i'm a little gory on details sorry my loves the criminologist in me popped out, i guess it counts as work related ptsd - this ended up so much more angsty than i wanted it to i'm sorry pt 100!!

notes: you are hurting me with this one aly oh no (and i’m taking it personal bc my oc is in fact his colleague and she is me so pls hELP ME) - think of this as a brief look into what i can conjure up for my future murder mystery teehee

there is a solace in being colleagues with your lover. there is routine in leaving the your shared house together in the morning, taking the many steps to the police station with your hands knotted together. there is pride in the way your partner hooks his arm around your waist, giving you a prompt kiss on the lips in front of your colleagues - they're getting tired of him pulling this, everyone knows you are together. heizou just likes to remind them.

the two of you are mildly inseparable; more like heizou always seems to 'coincidentally' find you, even when you're doing a case alone. you know damn well he's looking for you under the guise that his "intuition told him a case was brewing here." you would never complain out loud however when the pair of you work as the best detective duo in inazuma. there isn't a case you haven't cracked using your wit and heizou's intuition, even going so far as peeling open files for cold cases long unsolved. at first your supervisor scoffed as you perused the little to no evidence acquired by the police station's early days but after a week or so with neither heizou nor yourself attending your jobs at the police station, the two of you appear with a verdict that leaves him bewildered.

as with many jobs, there is a downfall - negatives that lurk in the dark behind the pride you radiate upon solving a case. there's the alarm when a civilian rushes to the police station, claiming all sorts of things about a murder. you remember sharing a look with your boyfriend's verdant eyes and then that day fuzzes over. the crime scene reeks, it's metallic and yet there is a stronger, more putrid smell of rotting flesh - one similar to that of putrescine - that nauseates you. for a few moments, you debate whether you should flee and surrender the case to someone else.

then your eyes fall ever so slowly onto her - the unfortunate victim. you take in her injuries, the state of her being left for presumably days. you shoot up, panting as a cold sweat runs down your body, making you unbearably wet. the room is dark, a crack of moonlight filtering through a crack in the linen curtains. your throat is dry and yet you swallow anyway, hoping it'd wash away the suffocating lump in your throat as you keep gasping for breath.

"love?" he's barely awake, voice deep as he awakes from what must have been a peaceful slumber for him. guilt washes over you that you managed to wake up your boyfriend over something so trivial. you stay sat up, slumped a little as a stinging sensation pricks at your eyes, "hey - what's wrong? speak to me, dear."

heizou pulls himself up slowly, a hand smoothing over the curve of your back comfortingly as you choke out a sob and heizou is quick to pull you into his chest. you can still smell it - no, her. it's heavy, hanging over you no matter how much you bury your face into heizou's skin in a futile attempt to escape. your boyfriend clucks his tongue, arms wrapped around you as you shake with every cry.

"it was just a nightmare, it's okay," he soothes, his chest vibrating against your body with every word, "deep breaths, in and out."

heizou can hear you barely babbling words in-between sobs, your body heaving as you struggle to get air into your lungs. his fingers trace shapes on your back, he even traces keywords to his ongoing cases. this is the sixth nightmare you've had regarding that woman's case - which happened months ago. heizou's brows knit together as he leaves a kiss on your damp hair.

there is a toll to being so devoted in supressing the evil of this world and it is the images, the smells, the sounds that never leave your psyche. they taunt you, swallowing your sanity in a thick fog. he clears that fog, he knows he does when you fall still in his arms, breathing shallow on his skin as you ease back into sleep. morning will come and neither of you will utter a word about what happened in the night.

this is the best thing ever jace fox you will always be famous!!! unfortunately, he does not have many comics at all, but luckily, it means reading him is super easy!

The Next Batman: Second Son [4 issues]

I Am Batman [18 issues]

— are his origin comics! they are, i think, the best way to understand his character, the new fox family and how he carries the mantle of batman.

i would then recommend reading Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths [7 issues]! it takes place during I Am Batman!

then read the story "The Cavalry" which is featured in Batman Black and White #3. it's a short story about jace and his robin!

then i would recommend reading his future state appearances! personally i don't think the order matters much since it doesn't make the event any less confusing, but the order i read it was:

Future State: The Next Batman (jace fox centric comic) [4 issues]

Future State: Nightwing (dick centric with jace team up) [2 issues]

Future State: Dark Detective (bruce centric with jace briefly appearing) [4 issues]

Future State: Gotham [18 issues]

Future State: Justice League [2 issues]

and that's it 👍🏾 basically every jace fox comic ever. i am obsessed with him. have fun reading!

hello! i mostly read comics to look at art and most of them are batman centric, but here’s some of my favs!

wayne family adventures is always a very good starter comic, it’s short and quick and cute! you get to meet all the batkids real fast

future state dark detective, which is a short story about bruce having absolutely nothing left to his name and still fighting it out! the art is gorgeous and it’s a fun short story (4 issues)

batman detective comics.. the storyline done by dan mora! i just love his art, im probably paying more attention to it then the plot but i remember liking the plot

there’s also this one story in detective comics 1027 where all the kids coincidentally find the same dead body and they solve the case together i loved that one

hehe as u can i see i love comics where bruce is just kind of walking around trying to solve a case… i haven’t really found any batkids or dick grayson comics that i enjoyed enough to keep reading, but i hope you find something you like!

Future State Dark Detective #4 part 2

This is the follow up to the backup in issue 2, featuring Red Hood as a mask hunter for the magistrate. Along with his partner, Ravager.

This backup, along with being the highlight of Future State, is building up to a greater story. On that I'm super excited about. The mystery and conspiracy and this is teasing is so intriguing to me. I can wait to find out more in a follow up series.

I love Jason and Rose's relationship in this story. It's cute and it fits them well. It's a bit undefined and little messy seeming but they truly seem to care and love each other. It's so heartwarming yet saucy to me.

I was a bit worried at the beginning since I didn't know how Rose was going to react to Jason's bounty. I'm glad she kept having his back.

All in all, I love this story, and the art style. I really hope we get to see more of this artist, and I can't wait to see the rest of this story.

The captain stalks the narrow length of his quarters on the Berlin with thoughts that should be focused solely on the war effort but instead seem to be filled with a particular shade of green and hands that hold too much strength to be completely human.

He’s done all this once before… and it hadn’t ended well. He reminds himself of this as he passes the holo, face down in the trash, his finger hovering over the call button at his desk.

But this is different. He’s been offered a glimpse into another life. Another future, one that is there for the taking if he only chooses to reach out and take it.

And Isaac, the everlasting bulwark, decides it’s time to move.

Mason leaves the Marines training when the call comes. He doesn’t need to be there but the hour is late into the Berlin’s night cycle and only a small contingent of the crew is awake. The marines are an exception. They’re pent up, getting lazy from too much time stuck within the Berlin’s walls and not enough time on the battle front. Mason can somewhat relate but his body doesn’t run in optimal specs since the tear away from the people that made him. Oh, he’s still a phoenix. But there’s parts of him that feel far too human these days.

He takes the short set of stairs that lead up to the Captain’s personal quarters, pausing outside the door as he waits for the sensors to detect him and allow him entry. The doors slide open with a quiet hiss and the room is surprisingly dark and empty as he steps inside.

His brow furrows and if it wasn’t for the subtle feedback of another heartbeat, Mason would think the space is empty.

“Captain?”

Isaac steps out of the shadows then, uniform discarded save for his pants unbuttoned and riding low on his hips. His hair is disheveled, like he’s been running his hands through it repeatedly, or perhaps had been trying to yank it out in frustration. His dark eyes are intense, almost tortured, and Mason wonders with alarm if the pressure of the war has gotten to him and the Captain had finally cracked.

“Zac,” he says, this time with something concerned in his tone. No time for rank now. “What is it? What’s going on?”

Isaac doesn’t answer straight away, instead turning to face the viewport that stares into space. Far in the distance, Mason can see the tear, pulsing in the cold black like a heartbeat. It still sets his hairs on end and alarm clamoring in the distant part of his mind. It’s not danger, he’s long realized. It’s an urgency. Like it’s calling to him, telling him to move.

He wonders if anyone else can feel it too.

“Do you ever wonder if things were different?" Isaac starts, before turning. He leans against the bulkhead, his Alliance dog tags catching the low light if the cabin where they rest against a softly furry chest Mason can't look away from. "If you weren’t-“ Isaac gestures vaguely in Mason’s direction and Mason can’t help but quirk his lips at the very un-captain like gesture Isaac gives him. He enjoys Isaac like this. Loose. Almost vulnerable. Real. Those dark eyes set over his strong aquiline nose and the hints of grey hair at his temples. He had always been a striking man in uniform, straight backed and strong, unshakable in command.

But like this… like this, Mason thinks he’s beautiful.

The thought catches Mason by surprise. Until now, he hasn’t allowed himself to think of Isaac this way. His commanding officer, phoenix or not, captain of the ship that is the closest thing Mason has left to a home. The lines between them should be drawn very clearly in the sand. They were confidants, maybe friends, but anything more Mason told himself he needed to stash away and ignore.

“You’ve been talking to Luc,” he says instead, trying to put a break on the way every sense of his enhanced body suddenly wants to lean in Isaac's direction.

And Isaac, despite the unruly state of his hair, his half-undressed state, gives him a measured look that is every inch a captain. “So have you.”

“Guilty,” Mason says on a shrug, not bothering to shy away from it. “A lot of what he says is….” Mason trails off and thinks for a moment. “Insane,” he finally finishes.

Isaac looks away. “Hopeful,” he says quietly. “Agonizing.”

Mason agrees with that. Somewhere, in another world, he doesn’t get snatched by Cerberus. Somewhere in another world, he joins the Alliance and meets Isaac and they fall in love and raise a family-

Mason’s carefully constructed façade cracks in the face of it. His face twists as his human heart swells and beats in a tempo strong enough it makes his breath almost catch.

Agonizing, Isaac had said. He wasn’t wrong.

“Yeah,” Mason agrees softly. He studies the man across from him, finally allowing himself to admit he wants it. He wants Isaac. Really wants him. Every part of him.

Mason wasn’t a vanguard, but he was done with this in-between. They could deny it all they wanted but Luc’s arrival into their world and the revelations about alternate versions of themselves that accompanied him was only hastening the steps of the dance they were already doing around each other.

"Do you feel it too?" he asks, stepping closer to Isaac, his chest full with yearning and his hands itching to touch. "Or am I alone in this?"
