okay okay okay ima have to explain a loooot then 😭😭 BIG SPOILER ALERT THO!!!!! (don’t put this in the jason tags or anything just in case bestie)
so first about this current hook up, i literally get you 100% i’m not a big fan of most jason ships like he’s most of the times written so ooc to fit in (also does not belong with anyone but me but that’s besides the point). overall there’s literally nothing going on with that girl (the comic is called red hood: the hill btw), they met minutes prior at jason’s housewarming party, they flirted like 2 lines, and in this preview they’re making out while jason’s best friend is in danger (so it’s basically not gonna end up being good for jason anyway),,, based on the sollicitations for the next issues of this mini comic, it’s mainly gonna be focused on jason’s and his best friend’s vigilantism activities, so like i said: big doubts on this hook up turning out to be anything more, and to further point out this, in the first issue of this mini, jason is clear that he does not plan to stay in that part of gotham and he’s just here to visit his friend and help. now i just want to let you know that based on the this mini’s writer’s latest interview, it sounds like he doesn’t know jason’s character very well, and plans to just make him another case of making him question all his morals for the sake of his relationship with bruce. so i’m not particularly hyped much for the rest of this story but we’ll just have to see.
now for artemis, and here’s when things get a bit messy, i already mentioned that this mini is set to be 3 years ago, and that’s because this is actually a direct follow up to the red hood and the outlaws comic. after joker war ended and the outlaws split up, red hood was supposed to continue solo and he got a new writer (the one currently writing this mini) who introduced brand new characters for him. why is it coming out now? well first of all, it was cancelled back in 2020 because dc had this big alternate universe event scheduled for the first months of 2021: future state. they basically put on hold allllll the comics that were on the main timeline. and so this comic (which at that time was called red hood issue #51 and #52) was put to a hold. after this event ended, practically all the comics were picked up again or new ones were made, except this one. why? well because it’s dc and if there’s one thing you should know about dc is that they absolutely hate jason todd at their worst, and at their best they just don’t care about him and shove him here and there. so that’s what happened, he was shoved into a batfamily event (as always) where his relationship with bruce was once again the topic and ended horribly for him (sparing the details because i chose to ignore most of this shit they put him through). and after that, a new comic came, and another one, and that “red hood” solo comic was completely forgotten about and left as an open arc with no closer. so i’m guessing that the writer had kept some pressure on dc to continue his story and was granted a 6 mini series to get it over with. so here we are now, getting this mini story that has happened right after jason and artemis fucked and decided to both take their own separate ways (they haven’t been together nor interacted in canon since 2020, yet they’re still the most popular jason ship 😭), and currently artemis is under the wonder woman editorial and had a little cameo in batman the brave and the bold, other than that we don’t see of her much :((( (yes, jason is hooking with this new girl literally days/weeks after he did with artemis with whom he had a lonnnng situationship 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 idk what to say i swear)
now to conclude this, if jason 3 years ago was hooking up with a stranger in his new apartments, where is he now? well he’s in main gotham with the batfamily, his last appearance was the gotham war (horrible horrible horrible event that served no purpose and just completely destroyed his character for no reason) where he basically got lobotomized by bruce so that everytime he gets a rush of adrenaline he gets so scared that he can’t do shit, and then he was “fixed” by joker toxin,,, and beast world (he was an adorable wolf yes it sounds really weird but he was adorable so that’s all that matters), the last look of him in the main canon is in batman #145 which came out earlier this week and he’s well, a punching bag as usual, no one but the batfam with him, still horrible characterization but that’s nothing new, dc does not care about jason enough to actually give him anything that’s good or anyone that will actually put effort into his story so we just have to take what we have and twist it into our own little thing ig,,,, this was a lonnnnng explanation but it was just to put everything into context sorry😭 some fans. got overly excited with the previews which ig good for them and everything but yeah she’s not his gf back then (so far) and certainly not currently,, anyway mwah much love and i love your writing 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
i read this ENTIRE thing the minute you sent it in nonnie i just got distracted by my mom and forgot to respond.
ig jason’s in his slut era, i guess he’s feeling a little whore-ish lately. good on him for rebounding after artemis (my eyes twitching and i’m on the floor sobbing)
thank u for this rundown of everything going on bc i haven’t gotten around to reading that outlaws run yet or gotham war. even tho i knew what happened in gotham war bc it was all over tumblr and. oh my god. WHY DID THEY DO THAT TO HIM 😭😭😭😭 just so sick like they’re genuinely out to get him it’s so nasty. free my man!!!!
it’s so crazy that dc treats him like this bc there’s so much they can do with his character and they just…choose not to? it’s so weird to me bc if his story was in my hands it would be so epic.
i’m so glad you enjoy my writing, sorry i haven’t been putting anything out tho 😖 i hope to start again soon!

Thoughts on (the apparently rushed) DC solicits?
Yeah, apparently Diamond used to put them together and now it's just some guy in the DC offices, hence why they've been screwy since the changeover.
Tumblr media
I Am Batman #1: "In the throes of Future State" just means those events coming about rather than this being set in the future, right? My impression is this is very much in the here-and-now, and I think this is gonna be really enjoyable with no more teasing out aspects of the premise and Coipel steadily on art. Killer title too. You're really gonna open this with the 'Anti-Oracle' though?
Batman #112-113: Glad to see Brandon Thomas but already miss the Ghostmaker backup.
Batman: Urban Legends #7: THE BOYS ARE BACK
Batman--Knightwatch: Bat-Tech Special Edition: I'm...not clear what this is?
Deathstroke Inc. #1: lol
Aquaman: The Becoming #1: shit I'm gonna like an Aquaman comic, and about a character who debuted on Young Justice no less, this sucks
Harley Quinn: The Animated Series: The Eat. Bang. Kill Tour #1: Zero interest but glad to see Max Sarin getting work.
Suicide Squad: King Shark #1: Ditto except replace Max Sarin with the Defacer.
Are You Afraid of Darkseid? #1: This one's a maybe.
Tumblr media
Action Comics #1035: Excited for this, especially with the fairly long-teased 'event' arc with Janin starting in the next issue, but I can't help but laugh looking at that cover because it absolutely looks like Superman's doing a Brandon Routh to his poor family.
Batman '89 #2: Ah, so this and '78 are still miniseries, somehow missed that before.
Batman: Reptilian #4: The preview for the first issue was definitely not what I expected coming from Ennis's interview; I'm curious how he'll square apparently doing the "Punisher MAX but it's Batman" approach so many people will want with the comedy he inherently sees in the character and his world.
Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #4: I had thought I was probably out but dammit if you're bringing the Gray Ghost in you've got my attention.
Batman/Superman #22: This is ending to be relaunched to focus on Jace and Jon, right? Between it doing steadily sales-wise and the acclaim I can't fathom a reason to dump Yang the same month King Shark is getting a mini.
(My worst fear is that DC floated this as a test - put a dynamite creative team on their two biggest characters, but without any sense of 'importance', and see how much readers gravitate towards it relative to crap that's central to the sacred Continuity - and feels it got an answer.)
Hardware: Season One #2: Probably still getting this.
Infinite Frontier #6: Hate when I'm made the new de facto head of the DCU and people are so unenthused about the prospect of this that the solicit for the last issue of my event mini isn't even listed at the front among the 'big' books of the month, when the first issue hasn't even hit the stands yet.
Justice League #68: This is where Jon joins, right? Conceivably even Jace/Yara/Kaldur, though I think that full changeover will be the marker of the next 'proper' relaunch.
Tumblr media
Justice League Infinity #3: Moraaaaa. The premise of 'what if the Justice League cartoon did all the cool stuff?' loses something when it isn't actually the cartoon anymore - we're already used to seeing the cool stuff in this format - but I'm not gonna turn down good Justice League comics.
Legends of the Dark Knight #5: Cool, I'll get this.
Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom #5: Orion still looks like that?
Rorschach #12: Hurm.
RWBY/Justice League #6: I guess any plans to sell Rooster Teeth would be on hold what with the move from AT&T to Discovery, so hopefully the chances of a more character-driven sequel aren't 100% dashed.
Strange Adventures #12: So goddamn nervous until the very last moment it's gonna turn out to be "it was his wife all along!"
Tumblr media
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #4: God, what a cover.
Superman '78 #2: Looking forward to seeing that Hitch variant, and Hackman's Luthor should be fun in this context.
Superman and The Authority #4: Right up to the end the solicits for this sound like an event lead-in mini circa 2007 or so except it's Grant Morrison so what is it really??? AND WHY NO QUITELY VARIANT
Superman: Son of Kal-El #3: I don't trust Taylor to do the ideal possible version of 'Jon Kent becomes a leftist in college' but the basic setup of this status quo is great and I think he'll do a fun version of it that's going to satisfy a lot of people.
The Batman & Scooby Doo Mysteries #6: That's MY Scooby-Doo, y'all!
A Nice House On The Lake #4: WHAT SECRET COULD BE MORE TERRIFYING THAN ANYTHING IN THAT FIRST ISSUE
Wonder Woman: Black and Gold #4: God, Lotay.
Batgirl of Burnside Omnibus: I get why this is a collection that basically had to happen but that's not a new cover by Stewart, is that? Somebody please tell me that's something repurposed and they didn't give him new work.

Bungie Weekly Update - 5/23/19
This week at Bungie, we’re setting the stage for Season of Opulence.
The next season begins in less than two weeks. On June 4, we’ll deliver the full and final patch notes.  Before that happens, though, we’d like to share with you some more of the key changes you’ll be seeing in Season of Opulence.
From One Season to the Next
As Season of the Drifter comes to a close, a new source for powerful rewards will emerge. The Drifter will return to his role as your Gambit hype man, and Benedict 99-40 is about to become your source for brand new secrets and rewards.  Let’s take a look at how this new perspective will be making some sweeping changes to your weekly routine…
Power Surge
Instead of a set of bounties, a new Power Surge quest will be your jumping off point for Season of Opulence
You will need to complete this quest to access the new Raid!
Learning from Season of the Forge, this quest must be completed only once per account
After one character completes the quest, alternate characters will be rewarded with Surge gear at Power Level 690
Gambit Bounties
We didn’t want rewards from The Drifter to be one of the primary sources of power following his run as the central character for Season of the Drifter
As a result, Power boosts received from Gambit Bounties will decrease once you’ve achieved 700 Power
They will decrease even further once you reached 720 Power
Prime Attunements
On day one, prime attunements will be reset to two charges for each player
You’ll receive two new prime attunements, even if you were playing right up to the reset
We want you to be able to play your favorite character without it impacting your power leveling strategy. We talked about this in a previous TWAB
Crown of Sorrow Raid
The Crown of Sorrow raid begins on day one of Season of Opulence at 4 PM PDT
Players who want to compete will need to complete the Power Surge Quest
We’ve taken additional steps to level the playing field for World First status
All player power will be capped at power under each encounter within the raid for the first 24 hours
While Contest is active, players will face an enforced challenge throughout the Raid. This means, Power beyond certain levels will provide no advantage for a given fight (e.g., for the first fight all Power above 700 won't provide an advantage, and for the final fight Power above 720 will not provide an advantage).
We are going to deploy the update at 8AM Pacific and the game will be down until 10AM Pacific, so that as many players as possible can get through the download and verification step and be ready for Opulence launch.
Our goals for this cap:
Progression that challenges raiders to climb to compete for World First
A World First race that tests your skill, communication, and strategy
A World First raid that is fair
Eververse Updates
With Season of Opulence, we’re making some changes to the Eververse store.
We had two main goals for the changes we’re making to Eververse in Season of Opulence:
Direct Pick:
Every new Eververse item in Season of Opulence will be available for direct purchase via Silver or Bright Dust
Most of these offers will be time limited, with new items available weekly
Greatest Hits:
Season of Opulence’s Bright Engram will contain a collection of community favorite legacy items, with a focus on the “Best of Year One.”
If you missed out on Spicy Ramen or the Selfie Emote, Season of Opulence is your chance
Tumblr media
Some additional details:
Armor:
Full armor sets will be made available as a single, per class bundle, as opposed to being offered only via Bright Engrams
Individual Armor pieces can also be purchased for Bright Dust whenever they appear on the storefront
These Armor pieces feature fixed perk rolls that are not randomized across duplicates
A Simpler Interface
Specific items are now featured on the front page and will be cycled with each weekly reset
Most offers will be time-limited to make way for rotating inventory, with some coming back into rotation at a later date
Players can access this new interface by visiting Tess in her usual Tower location
Tumblr media
Wrapped Items and Refunds
Individual items purchased for Silver will now go to the relevant character inventory location in a “wrapped” state
Example: A sparrow purchased directly for Silver will arrive “wrapped” in the Sparrow inventory
To use an item, it must be “opened” just like a bundle
Once opened, the item functions and can be accessed normally
If you wish to refund an item, you will have seven days from purchase to do so
Items that have been opened cannot be refunded
Tumblr media
All of these changes go live on day one of Season of Opulence. As always, we’ll be monitoring how this all works, and are eager to hear what you do and don’t like about the new storefront.
At Your Service
Batman had Alfred. Iron Man had Jarvis. You have our Player Support Team.
This is their report.
Crown of Sorrow Raid: Day One Preparations
As soon as Season of Opulence kicks off on June 4, the World first race for the Crown of Sorrow raid will begin. To help illustrate a more definitive starting line, we’ve provided vital information below that Day One contenders should be aware of.
Players will not be able to access the Crown of Sorrow raid if they have not yet completed the Season of Opulence Power Surge quest, even after this raid unlocks at 4 PM PDT. This will apply to all members in a Fireteam. We’ll have more information on this experience as we get closer to June 4.
Players who join in progress during the Crown of Sorrow raid’s first encounter will spawn in dead outside of the encounter space. To mitigate this issue, all Fireteam members must join up in Orbit prior to launching the Crown of Sorrow raid activity.
Look forward to reading more information as we get closer to the Season of Opulence launch.
Seasonal Weapon DropsAfter Season of the Drifter concludes on June 4, the following weapons will be unavailable to unlock at their respective vendors for a limited time. An issue was discovered late in development, and we are working on a fix for a future patch.
Service Revolver from Commander Zavala
Last Perdition from Lord Shaxx
Players who have already unlocked these Year 2 variants will continue to receive them as random drops from rank up packages. Players who do not unlock these weapons by the June 4 deadline will be able to acquire the weapons once they are addressed in a future update. It’s worth noting that pursuit rewards such as The Recluse, Oxygen SR3, and 21% Delirium will continue to be available.
These are some of the game changers you’ll discover when Season of Opulence begins, but we have even more to show next week.  We’re already working on a preview of new Pinnacle Weapons. We’ve also seen a preview of the new Raid jacket that is totally awesome. With the finer points for the systemic changes on the table, we can next turn our attention to revealing the places you’ll go and the reasons you’ll fight.
Right now, our focus is on Opulence. But after the Season has launched and Raid belts have been awarded, we’ll be looking deeper into the future, and sharing with you more about a new era for Bungie and Destiny 2.

Honestly, Detective Comics 1000 had some high points and some low points. But overall I felt it was rather lackluster. I figure I’d do a min overview review. Spoilers for literally the entire book it’s my opinions while reading and I am fairly new to comics and don’t know shit so bear that in mind. Please remember this is subjective and my own opinions.
So first off when I got to my shop they only had the 70s variant left, and with good reason. It feels extremely generic and not great. Maybe that’s the point of it emulating the 70s but I don’t know. I feel like a milestone should have something bigger and nicer.
As for stories. Batman’s Longest Case? Ehh, Art was okay. Story was pretty mad. Everyone always claims Batman is the worlds greatest detective. Or at least top 3, HECK it’s DETECTIVE COMICS. And yet it’s basically “It took him 50 years to find a secret society that Hawkman Hawkwoman Martian Manhunter and some other unnamed shmucks who are literally a who’s who have beaten him to it. It doesn’t feel like it matches. To be fair I don’t know some of these other character but like. I get Detective Chimp and The Question but it still felt weird and weak and a pretty poor way to start off the series. It felt extremely weak of a reveal and extremely weak of a story for Snyder, which is a shame his work during New 52 is what got me into Batman so I was hoping for more from him.
And then he finds in a book that says that the gun that killed his parents is at some costume pawn shop for villains items. That he somehow didn’t know that already? Like that should be pretty easy to find. Dude outright says he’s selling to suburban moms. It was. 3/10. I give points because what he did with the gun was alright. Okay I know I’m joking I know the whole gun plot line was actually the second story Manufactured For Use but the way they led together and left the title card at the end made it feel like one story and it just felt like there was an awkward transition. That’s just kinda bad layouting though.
The Legend of Knute Brody though? Fantastic. Great. The art had a stylistic charm(Dustin is always great at these kind of comedic stories with this art I find. It has a feel of the cartoon and really emphasizes the emotions in a great way) The story was fun, unique and different. It was new and really showed some cool family bonding. Really good. One of the best stories of the issue, Good job Paul Dini and the art team.
The Batman’s design. I wanna praise the art here. It’s really cool and how it uses the darks is fantastic. Unfortunately the story while okay is generic and bland as shit. Like. I’ve read this story a million times. That said of all the more bland generic stories in this issue like the first two? This one is the best. It’s got fantastic execution even if it doesn’t do anything new. Feels like a good filler issue for during a regular run.
Return to Crime Alley and Heretic are literally the more generic stories of Batman’s Design. While Heretic could maybe be something if it was part of a run Return to Crime Alley was just so heavy handed it was just. I dunno, these are the worse options for the generic story lines but without the fantastic art. Heretic has a decent throwback to older art styles that fits the book and brings nostalgia. I wasn’t reading then though so it doesn’t really do anything for me and just highlights what I don’t like about some older comic runs art.
I know was fantastic. This for me would be another highlight, the art is great. the way the story focuses on Bruce and his existence through the eyes of one of his adversaries is neat and the idea behind it is intriguing and different. I really liked it. I read the DC website preview which was this story and it’s what convinced me to buy the issue for sure. I thought if it was a bunch of stories like this it would be fantastic. Unfortunately not many other stories held up.
I loathe the Last Crime in Gotham, the story and the art. I don’t know if the art was supposed to be so janky and anatomically incorrect on purpose because it’s some warped future but like. Oof. It felt like everything I’ve heard complained about super hero bodies rolled into one. And as far as a future where crime is over? It really didn’t play with that idea enough for it to feel like anything other than just someone throwing darts at a list. (Edit: I literally just learned about Earth-2 so I’m much more lenient on this and it’s more interesting now, and I understand that it’s more just for the super long time readers or diehards from the Golden Era. My kneejerk reaction is the fact that it falls flat and makes no sense for pretty much no newer readers. Carry on, I’ll give yall the oldschool homage.)
The Precedent was decent. Though the dialogue especially Dick’s near the end feels really off and stilted. Like it feels like a robot monologueing without any emotion from any of the characters. The concept was okay though. I would think it would have come across stronger if they had panels show casing each of his proteges. Though that might have been saved specifically only for the next story.
The Batman’s Greatest Case. Honestly a decent story, great ideas. I loved it a lot. Except one thing. No Harper Row. Which like hear me out. This is all about the family. Harper was brought into the family. She left sure, but they literally state IN THE STORY, the only way out is death essentially. She left the costume behind but not the family. Like the last time she was mentioned years ago Cass was visiting her apartment still and hanging out. I really feel that she should have been there, maybe not in costume like, but in plain clothes with her mask. She was fighting in a suit(the regular black) without her identity before joining the family so when she became Bluebird is sort of when she joined the family. And while she left the suit behind, that was from before she was a part of the family. I think even if in the background it would have been a strong statement that you can leave the life behind but you’ll still be a part of the family if she was there. That you don’t need to be currently active to be a part. They really missed out what how that one small inclusion could have added so much. Also would have been a great way to remind people she exists in case anyone wanted to use her. I almost have a feeling she was explicitly banned because it feels like the rebirth team hates her and wants her forgotten. Which is a shame because she was a cool character and part of the family and I feel like the whole family should have been there. Like Huntress is fucking there and she’s not. I may have fallen behind but I don’t remember Huntress ever being as close to the family as Harper. It’s like she was the awkward stand in to replace Harper after the editor said to take Harper out. That 100% feels like what happened. Harper and Cass on that rock would have made so much sense.
Anyways rant aside the last story was alright. And then the preview for the new story starting next issue seemed solid and the new villain/hero? antihero? who knows. Seems neat. It left a good impression for things to come. Things that wont include Harper because the editorial team is trying to bury her. Bless up Greg Weisman for Young Justice bringing us Justice.
Anyways overall it was a letdown as a milestone but had some good moments.

Good Stuff’s Best of 2017
WARNING: I’d like to thank everybody who was here for me when times were low. Thank you, take care out there, and enjoy.
Cartoons; the one thing that I will continuously watch until I go blind. 2017 was an emotional handful and an exhausting trudge, can’t deny that, and I’m counting down the best cartoons/animations I’ve seen and loved this year in no particular order. Only two rules, no sneak previews of future projects (sorry to Unikitty and Hideo Kojima). Here we go....
10. HANAZUKI: FULL OF TREASURES
Tumblr media
This was a sleeper hit tbh. The fact all the episodes were free on Youtube blew my mind, but having a well structured story with a lovely cold space color palette, actually relatable characters, and a sinister undertones below its tender, colorful charm to be as a nice headliner to when Friendship is Magic came back in spring. It was an inviting start for the year, and with the guy behind Motorcity and Superjail taking the helm and having two more seasons being produced, Hanazuki is something I find is in good hands come 2018.
9. LITTLE WITCH ACADEMIA
Tumblr media
Four long years. I waited FOUR long goddamn years...and fuck me was it worth it. A spectacle is what I can call Little Witch Academia. Almost every episode dazzled me with its stage made bravado and confidence that always made me say, “Okay. Let’s make it til’ the next week”. Even when things got serious, LWA knew how to have fun and make the most of its concept. There is a sense of predictability sometimes, but the series would still throw you some good curve balls to never lose your interest. What did lose my interest was Netflix’s sorry excuse of a dub. The movies: fine. But Netflix, try that again, with any other anime, and I will rip your nuts off.
8. Now I might be cheating here since it’s not a cartoon, but shit it might as well have been
CUPHEAD
Tumblr media
The effort that went into this is phenomenal, beyond the many other games of the year no doubt. While not everything is animated, I could tell they were cutting corners in some areas, the frame BY frame animated enemies, bosses, and effects made this one of the most visually colorful and alive games to date, next to Mario Odyssey. Not only was this game a frustrating yet joyous romp to start and finish, but the music and art flawlessly channeled the essence of a time where the word “cartoon” was only starting to make good progress. My favorite character would have to be Satan King Dice, whom is an animated homage to great musician and composer Cab Calloway. His stache, his clothing, even his Cheshire grin captured the cool, jazzy vibe Calloway always provided in his performances. He and his fight was the highlight of Cuphead for me and I hope this game, if a sequel isn’t possible, is well remembered for its unexpected excellence in how a video game can look.
7. CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS/L-EGGO BATMAN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Faithful is what I can describe these two. Captain Underpants was just an awesome book to elementary schooler me, but to see a well animated, well written movie about a dude in his underwear was nothing short of a simple yet powerful masterpiece. As for Batman, this is one of the three truest DC and Batman movies around this time, and it has a gay undertone with Batman and the Joker’s relationship (how can you not pull that off, Suicide Squad?). While not a big fan of lego myself, The Lego Movie put my faith WB making another one equally as good, and they did not disappoint. It’s a shame it got snubbed at the Golden Globes, it deserves the award more than the Boss Baby. Plus it had a Superman that didn’t bore me while having a terrible CGI lip job that’s only made worse by his two way dick nose....
Tumblr media
Justice League costed 300,000,000 dollars.............
6. DANGER & EGGS
Tumblr media
To me, this series felt like one of the few steps forward the world took to make the LGBT+ community feel more welcome and inspired in public outlets; a small step, but progressive none the less. It is a colorful and lively action comedy, a first to be created by a transgender person, where you can see a non-binary character, a pride fest, diverse background characters of orientation and ethnicity, and it feels like they are a part of the world and not footnotes that states that you should respect queer, bi, ace, and so on based on a say so. It’s a show don’t tell type of series and it brightened my summer before I had to remind myself that college exists and is expecting me.
5. TANGLED: THE SERIES
Tumblr media
*ring ring* “Hello?” Ye, Disney? How fucking dare you?
My hype for this was undoubtful. I love Tangled the movie, I consider it one of my favorite 2010 disney flics beside Wreck it Ralph and Moana. And when the art style was up for a preview for this (?), I just sat and waited until it finally premiered and damn. I never stopped loving it, but it is until episode 16 where the series starts to hit high note after high note with the direction it’s going for the story. The fact that this all takes place not long after the movie makes the thought where Eugene and Rapunzel finally get married feels all the more earned. It’s working its way to a happily ever after, I adore this show, and this makes me appreciate Frozen a bit more for how far that’s fallen in the world after its one year of fame. Seriously, Gigantic had to get chopped, but Olaf can still live? Give me a break, Disney.
“Sir, I understand your enthusiasm....but this is Domino’s.” Then I will have the 5.99 large with Salchicha and pepperoncini with a liter sprite on delivery.
4. MADE IN ABYSS
Tumblr media
This was so beautiful, so awesome, and much better than...
Tumblr media
I wasted my life and I cannot say that I will ever reclaim that time proactively again the Anime
Made in Abyss is like Hunter x Hunter except Gon’s more booksmart and Kilua’s a timid robot. The bond between Riko and Reg was a fucking dynamic and heartfelt where Riko’s helps build Reg up and Reg kept Riko and himself safe with his bodily arsenal. That and this series has the best world building where they not only give the low down on almost everything about the titular abyss, but the atmospheric environments and the designs of the inhabiting creatures made this a unique world to want to explore myself. It knew what to show, and knew what to share. When things got serious, I actually tensed up at the thought of shit truly going down; they knew how to soften the terror while maniacally instill fear in us for the safety of the traveling kids. I want to recommend this link to an awesome breakdown of how great Made in Abyss was. However, as it seems that a season two has gone down the abyss as well, and I’m afraid it can’t come back up.
3. LET’S BE HEROES!!
Tumblr media
Is it safe to call this the M.U.G.E.N. of cartoons? Just an all up mashup of stuff I love in a Saturday morning? Campy, action, and laid back, this is something I can be sober or grab some kush and I would be enjoy the show just the same. They even have references you might not have ever heard of, but might like the search. OK KO’s a popcorn cartoon, it’s not for everybody, but it established itself well into the modern CN era when Adventure Time finally has to move on.
2. SAMURAI JACK
Tumblr media
Getting this out of the way: episode 6 toiled the final season of Samurai Jack for me. Not gonna go into detail, but if that episode was remade, I would have been more satisfied looking back. However, that does not stop me from saying this is how a revival should be, this is how a reboot should work, THIS is how you can bring nostalgia back. Samurai Jack was great back then, but this season, wrapping up the loose plight of our boy trying to get back to the past and defeat the demon Aku, was satisfactory to many fans. Even those who’ve never heard or remember Jack could just enjoy this as a dynamic mini-series; it gives you context of what happened before without having to recap the original plot of it. For non fans, it’s mostly about an ageless samurai, longing to return to his own time, stuck in the future for over 50 years to the point of losing his honor and his mind. It’s a binge worthy 10 episode season, originally intended to be a movie, and aside from polar opinionated finale, this made Samurai Jack feel great to love again.
1. TRUE AND THE RAINBOW KINGDOM
Tumblr media
This is a personal choice from me because 2017 was an honest to god terrible year for me; nothing but turmoil, season to season, and the struggle to cope with that despair in a way I felt actually could help. However, this small series here boosted my spirits because even with it being a show for little kids that I originally wanted to watch as a joke, the competent, enthusiastic spirit it had just moved me in a way that cartoons that I love for eons could only try to do on a whim. It’s not the best made cartoon, it’s not something I sincerely recommend to you all, but it helped me realize that the best thing about life is finding and seeking things that don’t just distract you from the hard and testing times reality puts on you, but gives you a moment of honest bliss and happiness that can influence your outlook on looking forward to better things because things like this, cartoons like this, CAN make you feel better.
*sniff* Which is why, the actual cartoon of the year....
1. is STEVEN U., BABY!
Tumblr media
Just kidding, guys! You will NEVER win, Steven!
Tumblr media
TEEN TITANS GO! WINS IT AGAIN, BABYYYY! ONCE AGAIN BABY (i don’t even like it no more...), YOUR NEW FAVORITE SHOW (i don’t even fucking like it no...) RISES TO THE TO-
But Steven Universe in Space, though. That’s when it’ll be great again.

Shoot ‘em Up
I will never forget highly recommending today’s film, 2007’s Shoot ‘em Up (trailer), to a coworker after catching it at the theater. A short time later he came back to me in a not-so-delightful manner and proceeded to lambast me about how much he and his wife hated it. Ever since then I taught myself to never glowingly gush about any film to friends and peers. Even if I know a film will make my annual top 10 rankings, when it comes up in conversation and only when prompted I will respond with simply mild approval in order to avoid raising expectations. From that experience and a few others with films belonging to the ‘gratuitous over-the-top’ action genre (Crank, Drive Angry, Hardcore Henry) , I came to find out people either really love or really despise these films. As you can see, I belong to the former group. Like Crank and Hardcore Henry, Shoot ‘em Up puts its outrageous action and stunts at the forefront and attaches an eyebrow-raising exposition in order to somehow tie it all together. Smith (Clive Owen) is minding his own business at a bus stop when a mother-to-be in labor dashes by him, and she is pursued moments later by henchmen working under a man known as Hertz (Paul Giamatti). Smith reluctantly decides to save the day and delivers the baby, only to see that he is to be ruthlessly chased by a countless amount of thugs in all sorts of ridiculous shootouts. Smith tries to bring the newborn to safe refuge to his friend DQ (Monica Bellucci), only to discover that Hertz is still right on his tail, and the rest of the film is a cat and mouse game with Smith trying to stay a step or two ahead of Hertz while trying to piece together how this diabolical plot came to be.
The unbelievable, unapologetic action is what Shoot ‘em Up is all about. There are too many ‘yeah, right’ moments in the film to count, and eventually it got to the point where I accepted it and rolled with it to see what the filmmakers would shove in my face next. If Mr. Smith would have it his way, it would be carrots…literally. It has been 10 years since I first saw this film and every time I have seen an ordinary carrot, I instantly hearken back to several priceless moments in Shoot ‘em Up. I do not want to give a lot away on how crazy the action is, because the ‘what will they throw at me next’ X-factor is what keeps this film moving. Most of the stunts and action worked for me, but like I said in the intro, there are people I have talked to who were not on board with Shoot ‘em Up right from the beginning so there is a decent chance this take on action films may not be up your alley. Clive Owen is perfect as the man of few words, Mr. Smith. He will occasionally mutter a super-cheesy one-liner that would make 80s action flicks proud. Giamatti is also spot-on as the villain Hertz, and Shoot ‘em Up does a great job conveying that Hertz is a little off his rocker. Hertz is a former FBI Profiler who garbles throwaway lines about using his profiler instincts in order to figure out where Smith and DQ are off to next. The three plays off each other well whenever they encounter one another throughout the film, and the film pulls no punches when it comes to their final clash.
There are a decent amount of extras on the BluRay. There are eight minutes of deleted scenes, and make sure to check them out with director’s commentary as I was losing it at one scene where Michael Davis stated he had to cut a scene because of feedback that it was ‘too unbelievable.’ There is a 53 minute making of feature titled Ballet of Bullets. It is pretty comprehensive at breaking down the origins and inspirations for the film, dissecting the latest weaponry in the film and explaining how they pulled off some of the stunts. Definitely check that out or instead opt for the ‘enhanced visual commentary’ that is available to play alongside the entirety of Shoot ‘em Up. The visual commentary plays clips of interviews with many cast and crew members talking about relative scenes that are playing out and it recycles a fair amount of excerpts from Ballet of Bullets. It was a nice way to experience the film again and get a little more insight throughout from many perspectives. There is also a standalone audio commentary track with director, Michael Davis, but he chimes in frequently throughout the visual commentary so I skipped his additional audio track. I am a big fan of straight-up action films, but it is only every so often that we get ones as outlandish as this. Again, do not let me overhype this for you if this style of action/comedy is not what you are into. If you checked out the linked preview in the intro, you will know what you are in for. Suffice it to say, if you do not mind a good dose of crazy injected into your action movies, then you cannot go wrong with Shoot ‘em Up. Thoughts (if any) on DC's April 2021 solicitations?
Let’s take ‘em in order! I should be able to muster up a comment on just about everything one way or another.
Tumblr media
Green Lantern #1: Oh this is gonna be bad. Heard only the worst about Thorne’s Future State: Green Lantern, and I assume Jo Mullein’s DCU debut will be wasted here to either function as some kind of ridiculous ‘popularity contest’ with Teen Lantern for who gets the bigger push, or as a way to put TL over with a few “good work kid, you got a future” comments. Also, and granted I don’t know how Morrison will end or this will begin, is the New Guardians angle being immediately dropped?
Robin #1: Dope suit, art, and premise, but it’s Williamson so I don’t care.
Batman: The Dark Knight #1: I’ll read this and I expect to like it, but between this being Kubert’s first big Batman project since Master Race, the ‘old but not quite retirement age yet’ angle, and the title, I’m concerned the shock ending here is that it’s actually a stealth DKR prequel.
The Next Batman: Second Son #1: So they really are committing here, though weird that this kinda makes Ridley’s Future State book basically a longform teaser for this. And I’ll get it as it comes out since it turns out this won’t be in that John Ridley’s Batman collection after all - sorry Dustin Nguyen, I love your stuff but I won’t buy an entire trade of material I otherwise already own just for one new story by you.
The Batman & Scooby Doo Mysteries #1: I got that whole great-looking Scooby Doo Team-Up run by Fisch for free on Comixology, I should read that sometime and see if this’ll be worth getting too as well, because it sounds like a hoot.
Challenge of the Super Sons #1: Glad people who want it are getting it, I do not care.
RWBY/Justice League #1: WILL BE GETTING A POST ALL ITS OWN
Tumblr media
Action Comics #1030: His powers waning definitely won’t help the standard pre-run fuming by a lot of Superman fandom, but it’s an interesting pairing with PKJ apparently doing mainly cosmic Superman adventures so I’m curious where he’ll go with it. That it’s particularly cited as being tied to Death Metal might validate my suspicion that the new ‘everyone remembers their entire mainstream publishing histories’ thing will play into Johnson’s description of Clark really feeling his age at the start of the run. And Janin on covers even before he gets in on the book proper! And that Midnighter description!
Superman #30: This sounds like where Johnson’s gonna start with that worldbuilding he touted, and I’m curious; definitely reads in this instance like him shoving Clark and Jon into some swords-and-sorcery-esque territory he’s familiar with.
American Vampire 1976 #7: Not reading, don’t care.
Batman #107: I assume ‘the events at Arkham Asylum’ are the ‘A-Day’ ominously brought up in Future State solicits. Tynion Batman, Jimenez as the regular artist now, whatever the Unsanity Collective is, all entirely my shit. More importantly than any of that though, GHOSTMAKER BACKUPS. And drawn by Ricardo Lopez Ortiz, artist on Steve Orlando’s excellent The Pull! Dope!
Batman: Black & White #5: Any other issue and ‘Jamal Campbell doing a life story of Nightwing’ would probably be the highlight, but in case you somehow hadn’t heard Gillen/McKelvie are making their DC debut on a Batman vs. Riddler story here, absolutely wild.
Batman: Urban Legends #2: Even more excited for this now that I’m onboard for the Grifter and Outsiders stuff given how much those features pleasantly surprised me in Future State.
Tumblr media
Batman/Superman #17: Injecting it isn’t enough anymore, I need to be on some kind of constant IV drip with this book. I was wondering whether it’d take the premise to further generational riffs or follow a history of mass-media Supermen and Batmen, but instead it’s veering off in a direction I never could have guessed and I couldn’t be more excited.
Batman vs. Ra’s Al Ghul #6: NOTHING CAN STOP THE ADAMSVERSE. NONE MAY DARE TRY.
Batman/Catwoman #5: Wondering how this Harley involvement plays in - I don’t imagine it’s quite what it seems given how King’s written her before. And love that Joker by Mann on the cover, major Clown at Midnight vibes.
Catwoman #30: No reason to assume this run won’t continue to rule.
Crime Syndicate #2: Dammit, I don’t think this book is going to be good, but I’m kinda tempted.
Detective Comics #1035: Wouldn’t be psyched, but Dark Detective was another pleasant surprise so I’ll give this a chance.
The Dreaming: Waking Hours #9: Again, not reading.
Tumblr media
Far Sector #11: Sucks a little knowing we’ll never see that little ‘Young Animal’ label in the corner again after this wraps. At least it’s going out on its highest note.
The Flash #769: In a vacuum this would sound dope but I have less than no faith in this, and goddamn that’s a terrible cover.
Harley Quinn #2: I’m sure it’ll be fine, no interest.
The Joker #2: I wanna believe Tynion will be able to make this work, he keeps talking like he has more freedom on this than he has some other books, but everything about this reads like the price he has to pay for relative post-Joker War freedom on Batman.
Justice League #60: It’s Bendis/Marquez on Justice League, lots of people will complain but I’ll mostly dig it. More interested in Ram V briefly getting to write the main crew in the JLD backup.
Man-Bat #3: I’d ask why this exists - and as a matter of fact I still do - but checking out some of DC’s digital-first output recently I see Dave Wielgosz has something on the ball, so maybe he’ll be able to make this work? Perhaps I’ll check it out in trade someday if worth-of-mouth is on its side.
Nightwing #79: I maintain, this is gonna be huge. And clever move to make for how to justify Nightwing keeping up his standard way of business after Bruce loses most of his money.
Rorschach #7: A comic I will purchase and let’s continue leaving it at that.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #109: DC’s highest-numbered comic (that hasn’t gone through an interim renumbering), astonishing. Not getting it myself, but respect.
Sensational Wonder Woman #2: Can’t say this sounds like my thing.
Suicide Squad #2: I’ve been swayed into checking out the Future State debut, but that’d have to really blow me away for me to follow into the main book.
Tumblr media
Superman: Red & Blue #2: Sadly if unsurprisingly DC’s clearly not stacking this with AAA attention-grabbing names in the same way as this latest version of Batman: Black & White, but there do seem to be some interesting names from outside the usual big two roster here. And the main and Bolland cover may disappoint but holy cow that David Choe variant.
The Swamp Thing #2: I have no doubt it’ll be incredible but time and again I learn I simply don’t have it in me to care about Swamp Thing regardless of the objective quality of the effort put into him.
Sweet Tooth: The Return #6: Another one I’m not interested in.
Titans Academy #2: Oh lord so this is where they stuck Billy Batson.
Truth & Justice #3: I continue to have no idea what if anything the unifying idea of this anthology is supposed to be.
Wonder Woman #771: Wonder Woman as troubleshooter for mythological mishaps isn’t a permanently sustainable or desirable status quo but I’m down for it for as long as it lasts if it’s any good (though that Immortal Wonder Woman preview...concerned me, in spite of Jen Bartel’s jaw-dropping art).
So that’s 19-23 out of 37 I’ll be getting - if DC’s standard for success with Infinite Frontier is the proportion of their line people will be checking out, I guess it’s winning with me.
