National Pool Opening Day
National Pool Opening Day is a popular holiday that Americans celebrate on the last Saturday in April. This year, it takes place on April 29. Because swimming is part of making summers memorable, it’s important that pool owners keep them clean, and ensure that they’re safe for pool parties with family, neighbors, and friends. Apart from providing a place to socialize, swimming pools also encourage physical activity. By keeping your pool’s acidity and alkalinity levels in check, you ensure that it’s ready for you to enjoy a swim throughout the summer.
History of National Pool Opening Day
National Pool Opening Day reminds pool owners and swimmers all across the U.S. to make their pools summer-ready and make them safe to enjoy during warmer months. Swimming pools help people relax, practice their swimming and provide the opportunity to interact with family and friends. National Pool Opening Day was founded by Leslie’s Swimming Pool to highlight the importance of pool safety and hygiene.
Roman, Assyrian, and Greek warriors were taught to swim as part of their martial training. In 1828, indoor swimming pools became popular in England as St George’s Baths was opened for locals. Swimming was included in the Olympics as a sport in 1896 but only males could participate and it was only in 1912 that women were also allowed to contest. Some common swimming styles, at the time, were sidestroke, breaststroke, backstroke, and crawl, and for each competition, the swimming distance was different.
The first person to swim across the 20-mile width of the English Channel was merchant navy captain, Matthew Webb in 1875. He crossed it in 21 hours and 45 minutes having to swim against tidal currents. The first woman to succeed in this feat was Gertrude Caroline Ederle, a competitive swimmer from the U.S. in 1926 for whom it took only 14 hours and 31 minutes.
Today, swimming has become so popular that there are swimming pools in schools, colleges, and universities where students are trained.

CARandDRIVER: Nissan Commemorates the Skyline GT-R with a 50th-Anniversary Grand Seiko Watch
Within the whirling galaxy that is the love for all things automotive spins another constellation—the love of watches and other instruments that measure time. When these two phenomena collide, few can hope to escape their gravitational pull, and here's more proof: Seiko has released a limited-edition watch based on the classic Nissan Skyline GT-R sports car.
Grand Seiko is currently celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Spring Drive watch technology just as Nissan observes the 50th anniversary of the Skyline GT-R, which made its debut in 1969. The GT-R name is coming back on a 2020 model that was revealed at the New York auto show in April...

Original video caption:
Summer is often synonymous with light, warmth, sun, vacation and ultimately night outings. As the latter generally has a social connotation, it can also mean something else for more and more people. Summer is also the host of a wide variety of celestial events that more than one can enjoy. Amateur photographers, professionals, backyard astronomers, star gazers, you, me, we all tend to linger outside longer to gaze at the sky’s impressive displays while it is not too cold. But what is so special about them at this particular time of the year? Probably the possibility of watching several phenomena occur at the same time!
>
> In my latest project called ‘LUX CÆLI’ (from Latin, ‘sky light’), I wanted to focus on these events and show their mesmerizing nature in a time-lapse series. It is merely a celebration of the summer time night sky phenomena in high resolution, and my goal was to show them in a bit different way. Whether you are talking about a sunset, northern light, meteor showers or eclipse, these displays are all breath-taking by essence. However the pinnacle of celestial awesomeness is to witness several of these natural phenomena happen at once.
For example, northern lights are a very well-documented subject, but seeing them wiggle on top of another elusive astronomical feature like noctilucent clouds is something one cannot soon forget, and has rarely been recorded in the past, especially on film. This scene at 3’:04’’ was taken in High Level Alberta as I conducted airborne research on noctilucent clouds with the Project PoSSUM. Noctilucent clouds are ice-particle clouds at the edge of space (83km of altitude) that glow in the summer twilight, and they would not be visible if multiple intricate conditions were not met. Nonetheless, when you start seeing a green and purple beam of light almost outshining this electric-blue veil at 100km of altitude, you are reminded of how big our atmosphere and ultimately universe is.
I suggest you spend some time watching the video more closely: you might see more and more events adding to the one you are already gazing at. How about these geostationary satellites aligning under the Perseid meteor shower with the close-up view of Scutum constellation and milky way in the background? Or maybe the big dipper photobombed by the aurora borealis in the smoke of this summer’s devastating Canadian wildfires? ‘Are those stars?’ you might ask. ‘Not necessarily’ I might answer. A good example is to watch saturn or the Andromeda galaxy follow the course of the milky way across the night sky. It gives another perspective to it, and you will never look at the sky in the same way. These events overlap more often that one might think, you just need to linger and watch! The film also features this summer’s partial lunar eclipse rising over the Alps, sunsets over an ocean of clouds and more!
>
> I assembled the best time-lapse sequences of this summer’s sky light events taken in different countries through my work and vacation in Canada, France and Denmark. With that, I also wanted to show that virtually anyone can go outside and witness the same things, and it’s a free spectacle for you right around the corner…
The film has been shot with the Sony a7rII, a7s and Canon 6D, along with a variety of lenses ranging from 14mm to 500mm.

National Hot Tub Day
National Hot Tub Day is here, and you know what that means: you now have yet another excuse to enjoy relaxing in your hot tub.
But what if you want to do something more to celebrate? Here, we’ll show you five ways you can do just that:
Treat yourself to a new hot tub accessory.
Practice some hot tub yoga.
Indulge in aromatherapy.
Have a movie night.
Play some games with the whole family.
Ready to celebrate National Hot Tub Day the right way? Let’s dive in, first with why hot tubs are worth celebrating.
Why Hot Tubs Are Worth Celebrating
You probably know at least part of the answer to this question. After all, hot tubs have a reputation for being relaxing as well as therapeutic.
What you might not know is that hot tubs have a wealth of other benefits that make them worth celebrating:
Reduced stress: The warm water of a hot tub can help your body release feel-good stress-relieving endorphins.
Relaxation and pain relief: Whether you’re suffering from exercise-induced soreness, arthritis or another condition, hot tubs can help reduce pain, loosen muscles and take pressure off joints.
Better sleep: After taking a dip in your hot tub, you’ll likely be able to fall asleep faster and enjoy more restful sleep throughout the night.
5 Ways to Ring in National Hot Tub Day
1. Treat Yourself to a New Hot Tub Accessory
Hot tub accessories offer a fantastic way to spruce up your hot tub without breaking the bank.
For National Hot Tub Day, why not treat yourself to a hot tub accessory that can improve your overall experience in the long-run?
Here are our favorite types of hot tub accessories:
Cover lifters: No one wants to wrangle with a heavy cover when all they want to do is enjoy their hot tub. Make the process painless with a convenient cover lifter.
Steps: If you’re tired of slipping and sliding your way into your hot tub, a set of hot tub steps will be right up your alley. The right set of steps can not only make your entry and exit process much safer, but also serve as a perfect location to place your dry towel for easy access.
Pillows: If your hot tub sessions are getting dragged down by uncomfortable headrests or raggedy cushions, it’s high time you went for a new, deluxe pillow. By choosing the right size and shape for you, you can create a custom experience that’s tailored to your needs.
2. Practice Some Hot Tub Yoga
As a form of exercise that focuses on physical control as well as mental clarity and relaxation, yoga is a perfect match for your next hot tub session.
To get started, engage in some breathing exercises. Simply sit in your preferred seat and take a few deep breaths to begin. Then, focus on lengthening your spine, dropping your shoulders down and back, and noticing the sensation of the water on your skin.
If relaxation is all you’re looking for, you can simply continue that breathing exercise throughout the entirety of your session. Or, you can move onto some deeper stretches and muscle-strengthening poses. We recommend the seated spinal twist, cow face pose and boat pose.
For more info on each one, stay tuned for our Beginner’s Guide to Hot Tub Yoga.
3. Indulge in Aromatherapy
If you want to take your hot tub experience to the next level, you’d be wise to give aromatherapy a shot.
With hot tub aromatherapy, the scents of some of the world’s most prized and fragrant plants are infused in your hot tub water. You can achieve that either with the use of all-natural essential oils or pre-made bath crystals.
Traditionally, certain scents have certain benefits. For example:
Lavender relieves stress and may help you relax.
Eucalyptus
Thyme may reduce anxiety, fatigue and stress.
Keep an eye out for our upcoming post, The Secrets of Hot Tub Aromatherapy, for more information.
4. Have a Movie Night
Movie nights aren’t just for the couch. In honor of National Hot Tub Day, try watching your favorite flick in the hot tub instead.
There are a couple of easy ways you can do this:
Create a backyard movie theater with the help of a projector.
Set up a laptop or portable DVD/Blu-Ray player on a nearby table.
Plus, some of our highest-rated hot tubs, including the Dr. Wellness G-15 Tranquility Spa, come with built-in HDTVs to make your movie night even more fun.
5. Play Some Games With the Whole Family
If you’re not in the mood for a movie, trying playing some fun hot tub games for the whole family.
A few favorites include:
Waterproof cards and board games: If you have a set of waterproof cards or a waterproof board game lying around, you know what to do.
Rubber duck races: Push, blow and splash to see who’s duck can make it to the other side of the hot tub first.
Ping pong: Use plastic paddles to bounce a ping pong around. Whoever knocks the ball outside of the hot tub loses.
Hockey: Get your team’s “hockey puck” (a rubber duck or small floating ball will do just fine) to the other team’s side of the hot tub — no touching allowed.
How are you going to celebrate National Hot Tub Day?
No matter what you choose to do, you’re sure to have a fun and relaxing holiday with the help of your hot tub.

Buffet Day
Everybody loves a buffet, so imagine having a whole day dedicated to one! Buffet Day is about hosting or attending a buffet of epic proportions—enjoy a table spread with enough food to keep you full for a whole day, and interesting enough to make eating all day fun and exciting!
The History of Buffet Day
The buffet table has its origins in brännvinsbord—a type of schnapps made in 16th century Sweden. The smörgåsbord was a type of “meal” during which guests gathered for a pre-dinner drink and small talk. The smörgåsbord buffet was often held in separate rooms for men and women before the dinner was served. The Smörgåsbord became internationally known as “smorgasbord” at the 1939 New York World’s Fair exhibition when the Swedes taking part in the exhibition had to invent a new way of showcasing the best dishes of the Swedish cuisine to large numbers of visitors. The term “buffet” itself originally referred to a type of French sideboard furniture where the food was served but became popular in the English-speaking world in the second half of the 20th century after the Swedes had popularized the smorgasbord in New York, probably because it was considerably easier to pronounce and remember.
How to Celebrate Buffet Day
The way you celebrate Buffet Day depends on where you are and what your preferences are. If you happen to be anywhere near Nevada, it would be an unforgettable experience to visit one of Las Vegas’ famous all-you-can-eat buffets. The Carnival World Buffet offers more than 300 dishes (!) and more than 70 varieties of homemade pies, cakes, and pastries all made from scratch. For $24, you can get into Carnival World and stay all day, tasting the extremely wide variety of foods on offer all throughout it. If you’re a fan of seafood, you could visit The Village Seafood Buffet, that features all of your seafood favorites such as lobster, snow crab legs, shrimp, freshly shucked oysters, sushi and many other mouthwatering seafood dishes. Lago Buffet at Caesars Palace is another absolute must for anyone who truly loves food, especially in such enormous quantities. Featuring fresh ingredients and many made-to-order specialties, the Lago Buffet offers a world-class selection of Asian fare, herb-roasted poultry and sauteed pasta.
If you’re not anywhere near Nevada, or crowded places are just not your thing, consider preparing your own buffet at home to celebrate Buffet Day. You can make anything you want, of course, but seeing as how the buffet has Swedish origins, why not try some Swedish or Scandinavian specialties? Start buy seeking out a high-quality schnapps. Many different kinds of flavored schnapps are available today, and they range from exotic, summery flavors such as watermelon or coconut to root beer or others like it. The world over, cinnamon schnapps is perhaps the most popular kind of schnapps. However, if you’re wanting to keep your smorgasbord/buffet as traditional as possible, buy some Akvavit, a flavored spirit that has been produced in Scandinavia since the 15th century. Akvavit, like vodka, is distilled from either grain or potatoes. After distillation, it is flavored with herbs, spices, or fruit oil, with caraway, cardamom, cumin, anise, fennel, and lemon or orange peel being the most popular choices. Traditionally, different types of pickled herring are served with the drink.
Whatever you decide to do, don’t forget to celebrate Buffet Day!

National Kiwi Fruit Day
Quick trivia question: where does the kiwi fruit originate from?  I’m sure you want to say the land known for kiwi: the fruit, the bird, and the people–New Zealand.
It’s one of the things we really think of when the Southern Hemisphere nation is brought up.  But kiwis didn’t come to New Zealand until the early 20th century, and were brought over from mainland China.
But Kiwis embraced yang tao–the Chinese name for kiwi–and by 1962 the fruit had become so synonymous with the country that they dubbed it “kiwifruit,” to go along with the rest of the country.  (It’s popularly known that the kiwi fruit was named after the kiwi bird, because they’re both small, brown, and fuzzy!)
Nowadays, New Zealand isn’t even the main producer of the vine-grown berry fruit–that happens to be Italy, whose southern lands hold the best year-round climate for growing kiwi fruit.  But it’s still the official fruit of New Zealand, and everyone around the world wants to eat a kiwi from the land of kiwi!

National Wear Your Pearls Day
Created by author and motivational speaker DeAnna Bookert, National Wear Your Pearls Day reminds us that out of the many trials and tragedies that come in life, beauty is often created, just as how a pearl starts as an irritant in a mollusk but ends up becoming a precious gem. Pearls come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, just as people face many different trials in their lives, and pearls develop layer by layer, just as people become stronger as they grow and work to protect themselves. Bookert started the “annual depression and anxiety awareness campaign” because she saw pearls as representing her own life story and struggle with depression, and she wanted to help those going through similar circumstances as herself. Pearls are worn today more than just to show off one’s style. As Bookert has said of her own observance of the day, “I wear pearls as a reminder that I have purpose and value.”
Pearls are formed by some mollusks—including some saltwater and freshwater oysters, as well as by some freshwater clams—when they defend themselves from intruders by secreting a substance, mother-of-pearl, from their mantle, an organ that covers the inside of their shells. Although tradition says pearls are formed from sand or dirt particles, the irritant most often is a parasitic organism that has burrowed its way into the mollusk’s soft tissues and organs. After being covered by three or four layers a day for at least two years of the extremely thin mother-of-pearl, the parasite becomes a pearl.
The color of a pearl depends on the mollusk and its environment. There are many different shades, from white to black and everything in between. The smallest pearls are called seed pearls, while the largest are baroque pearls, which are irregularly shaped pearls. Pearls from saltwater mollusks are often known as Oriental pearls, while pearls from freshwater mollusks are simply called freshwater pearls. Pearls are valuable because they are quite rare, with only about one in 10,000 mollusks that are capable of producing pearls actually doing so. The more luster a pearl has and more perfectly shaped it is, the more value it has. Pearls are most often found on necklaces and other jewelry. On National Wear Your Pearls Day, pearls are worn not only as a fashion statement but to display the resilience and inner strength of those who wear them.
How to Observe
Celebrate the day by wearing pearls! Wear them not just to show you are fashionable, but as a symbol of your inner strength and beauty, to remind yourself of your value no matter your current circumstances, and to raise awareness about anxiety and depression. If you don’t have any pearls, today is the perfect day to buy them! Although they are more often associated with feminine attire, today is just as much for men as it is for women.

National Watermelon Day
Hydrating, sweet, and cold, watermelons taste like backyard barbecues and hot summer days. Dig into a slice, make a smoothie, or put together a fruit salad.
With a name like watermelon, one would expect it to be juicy, scrumptious and amazing.
The watermelon meets, and in every case, exceeds that very exclamation.
The presence of so much water makes this melon an impressive addition to the fruit family. Here it comes, the carefully procured but wonderfully amazing, National Watermelon Day!
Learn about National Watermelon Day
Well, the concept behind National Watermelon Day is a very simple one; it is all about celebrating this tasty and delicious fruit. Watermelon is a type of fruit that is enjoyed all around the world. Not only does it taste delicious, but it offers a lot of nutritional benefits as well, so you don’t need to feel guilty about enjoying as much watermelon as you want, which is always a plus!
There are a lot of different benefits that are associated with eating watermelon. This includes the fact that it is a good way of keeping the body hydrated, which is extremely beneficial for those of you out there who do not like drinking water. The high water content in watermelons means you’re going to get a good dose of water every time that you consume this fruit. In fact, did you know that watermelon is 92 percent water? What’s even better is that a high water content helps you to feel full. Therefore, you can eat watermelon and you won’t feel hungry afterwards. The combination of fiber and water that is in this fruti means you get a good volume of food without a lot of calories at all.
Another benefit associated with watermelon is all of the beneficial plant compounds and nutrients that it contains. Watermelon is one of the lowest fruits in terms of calories, yet it is one of the best in terms of the nutrients that it delivers. It provides three percent of the RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) in terms of vitamins B6, B5, and B1. It also offers four percent of your RDI of magnesium, as well as five percent of your RDI of potassium, 18 percent of your RDI of vitamin a, and 21 percent of your RDI of Vitamin C.
The benefits do not end there either. It has also been proven that watermelon is beneficial when it comes to your hair and your skin. This is because of the Vitamin C and A that are included in watermelons. Vitamin C helps to create collagen, which is the protein that keeps your hair strong and your skin supple. Vitamin A is also critical in terms of healthy skin, as it assists with repairing skin cells and creating them. Your skin can look flaky and dry if you do not have enough Vitamin A.
Watermelon has also proven to be beneficial in terms of your digestion. Watermelon contains a lot of water, as well as a small amount of fiber, and both of these are vital in terms of healthy digestion. Water helps to keep your digestive tract moving in an effective manner while fiber can provide bulk for your stool. If you eat fruits that are rich in both fiber and water, it can be very beneficial in terms of promoting healthy and normal bowel movements. This is also important in ensuring that you feel comfortable and you don’t feel blocked up throughout the day.
History of National Watermelon Day
Whether it is the more than 90% water in the fruit, or the sweet flavor that explodes in your mouth with every bite, this fruit lives up to a crowned ‘favorite fruit’ of children the world over.
That hard rind around the edge gives a smooth texture, easy to hold by even the youngest of hands, the soft inner red fruit easy to eat by young and old alike, and with a juicy burst of flavor, it is liked by most that do eat it.
Even the seeds are an enjoyment, spitting them has become contests between family, friends and neighbors. But even the seeds do not detract from this wondrous fruit, merely giving us a reason to open our mouths for yet another bite of the succulent melon.
How to celebrate National Watermelon Day
Well, eating the watermelon straight up is a great place to start. A fruit salad can compliment the watermelon very well, as can a little bit of sugar on top.
But why end there? Square off the fruit and frost the melon with a liberal coating of whipped cream, sprinkle on other assorted berries and you have a cake best served cold. Or if one cut the rind in half, and hollowed out all the watermelon leaving only the rind, it would make a great cup for any summer beverage.
Serve some cold watermelon sliced lengthwise with some grilled eggplant and zucchini for a great summer barbecue flavor many do not expect.
Yet the watermelon can be put in your blender, and pour them into molds to form watermelon popsicles. The choices and variance in what this fruit can be used for are so immense, listing them all here would be crazy. Instead, find a way to work it into things that it would compliment, like light meals, or ways to use if differently!
But that sweet taste of watermelon on the rind may just be one of the best ways to share it this National Watermelon Day. Cut up the melon, plate it up, add a little salt or sugar if that is your preference, and enjoy the delight of sweetness this summer.

National Maritime Day
Learn about the contributions of maritime workers such as transporters, and the regulations, safety rules, and security that goes into those crucial jobs.
Some people might have begun to notice a theme about May and its holidays–and that is that many of them are centered on getting back out and into the world. With the warming sun and halting rains, should anyone be the least bit surprised?
Even so, while National Maritime Day is not necessarily about the ocean at large, it is more about those men and women who spend their lives working on and around it. This day specifically focuses on the safety, security, and all the little elements that make up the lives of those on the sea, as well as a little bit of remembrance for how much people have to thank them for.
History of National Maritime Day
A great way to start with this day is by understanding exactly what maritime is. To begin with, maritime transport and work has been important since the human race first put something that floats in the water and decided to use it to get somewhere or do something.
National Maritime Day commemorates the sea, the people of the sea, and the incredible effect it has had on the lives and well-being of humankind. Just to start with the most basic point about it, sea trade has been the largest carrier of cargo in the history of the world. In fact, even the land-bound parts of the Silk Road didn’t see as much cargo and trade-goods moving along it as the oceans and seas have.
Of course, when it comes to the sea, the wind is an ever-present companion, the water buoyant and the siren-call of days at sea are strong in everyone nearby. But the one thing that may be a bit of a weakness for water-transport  is the fact that items need to be delivered in a timely manner. While the system is and always has been fairly reliable, it certainly is not fast, at least not by today’s modern standards.
So for those who know someone who has worked in the sea trade or still does, National Maritime Day is the perfect day to take a moment to thank them for all they have done, and let them tell stories about their time on the salty black seas.
National Maritime Day Timeline
1300 BC Seafaring boats are used
The oldest discovered hulled boat that is for seafaring dates back to the Late Bronze Age. Evidence has been in a shipwreck off the coast of Turkey.
200 BC Maritime Silk Road begins
Before trade on the open seas was common, the Maritime Silk Road used many back routes and channels to make trade possible between Asia, Africa and Europe.
1492 Christopher Columbus’ First Voyage
This maritime trip into the new world is the first crossing of the Atlantic that does not use Arctic routes.
1912 The Titanic sinks
This most infamous of luxury cruise ships sinks on her maiden voyage between Southampton, England and New York City, USA.
1955 USS Nautilus is launched
The world’s first nuclear powered sailing vessel, named after the fictional submarine in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
How to Celebrate National Maritime Day
Make a Visit to the Coast
One perfect way to celebrate and honor this day is to get out to the oceans or seas by gaining access through the bays and the ports. Take a look at the ships coming and going, watch the boats going through the harbor, and perhaps even get up close to take a tour of one, if possible!
Take the time to go out and marvel at the ships and the huge dinosaur like cranes that hulk over the docks transporting cargo containers from shore to ship and ship to shore as they help make the world’s economy turn.
Check Out a Maritime Museum
While visiting a harbor or port, check to see if there is a Maritime museum nearby that can be easily accessed. These museums can offer a wealth of information that allows for learning about the sea and maritime issues. See what has been wrought and how things have changed over the years.
Learn about the regulations that people and boats have to follow and how maritime safety has been a constant and evolving concern–and still remains one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
Some of the world’s most popular Maritime museums include:
National Maritime Museum, London, United Kingdom. Also called the Greenwich Maritime Museum, this one has been open since the 1930s.

San Diego Maritime Museum, California, USA. In addition to visiting, people can participate in recreational and educational courses throughout the year.

Read Some Books About Sea Life
National Maritime Day is the perfect time to get started on learning more about the lives of sailors and people of the sea. Traditionally, in the past the people living on the sea were mostly men, although some ships did allow women on board (or, in some cases, they snuck on board dressed as boys).
Try reading some of these fictional stories of the men (and a few women) who have had sea-faring adventures:
Moby Dick by Herman Melville. This classic piece of fiction was published in London in 1851 and hails the famous first line “Call me Ishmael”, one of the most recognizable lines in classic Western literature.
Seafaring Women: Adventures of Pirate Queens, Female Stowaways, and Sailors’ Wives by David Cordingly. Chronicling the various numbers of women who went to sea, this non-fiction historical narrative is surprising and delightful.
The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Telling the battle of a Cuban fisherman against a marlin, this fictional short story was published in the US in 1952 and is well loved as it echoes the struggles of the human condition.
Shōgun by James Clavell. The first of novels in this series, Shōgun is based on actual events encountered by and English Sailor whose ship was blown ashore in Japan around 1600, giving a unique Western perspective on life in the Orient at the time.
National Maritime Day isn’t a day for being inside, it’s a day for going out and exploring this important part of the world’s past, present, and future. National Maritime Day – To The Docks!

National Skirt Day
There’s been a mystery that has eluded men throughout the ages, one  of a simple turn of phrase and garment of typically feminine attire.  What, exactly, is the difference between a dress and a skirt? Most men  simply have no idea, but National Skirt Day is here to change all that!  With the spreading of awareness tied to National Skirt Day, men and  women alike will know where the difference between a skirt and a dress  lay. Are you ready to have your knowledge expanded and impress your  girlfriend with your new-found knowledge? We know you are!
Learn about National Skirt Day
If you look into the wardrobe of any woman (not that you should ever  do this without permission!), you’re bound to notice several beautiful  skirts. Skirts have been worn since prehistoric times. This means that  you could wear a skirt before you could make one on a stitching machine.  Of course, styles have definitely changed over the years. We’re sure  the mini skirts that are popular today wouldn’t have been such a hit  back in the day! However, not matter what style of skirt is your go-to,  we can all appreciate the beauty of this garment.
National Skirt Day gives you the perfect opportunity to pull your  favorite skirt out of your closet and wear it in style. A lot of women  like to treat themselves to a new skirt on this day. Any excuse to go  shopping, right? There are so many different styles of skirts to choose  from today as well. Skirts tend to be split up based on their length,  i.e. mini, midi, or maxi. However, you then have a whole host of other  design consideration. From tulle skirts to leather skirts; there is  something for everyone.
History of National Skirt Day
First a bit of history on the skirt, it’s far older than you might  imagine! The oldest known skirt was woven from straw, and was discovered  in Armenia, and was known to have been worn by men and women alike.  This was just the beginning of a long and storied history of a garment  to shock and amaze people throughout the world. So what’s a skirt you  ask? Why, it’s a garment that hangs from the waist down, and can most  often be identified by the fashionably challenged as “That bit of cloth  what hangs from the waist down on a dress, if there were no ‘top-part’  to the dress.”
The most shocking of all skirts, the mini-skirts, has a surprisingly  long history. Mini-skirts are known as those that just barely cover the  buttocks, and were first worn by the Don Quan Mian culture in medieval  times. On the other end of the spectrum is the massive and voluminous  skirts that existed in various cultures, sometimes with a diameter of 3  meters around the base. Skirts have certainly seen their share of range,  haven’t they?
But why “National Skirt Day”? This is in part due to a film known as  La Journée de la jupe, during which a “skirt day” was proposed in  response to the cultural restrictions of the setting of the film. Such a  request was formally put to the French Minister of Education, wherein  all women would be permitted to wear skirts to school.
How to celebrate National Skirt Day
Pretty simple, as you might imagine! Male or female, dig into your  wardrobe (or your partner’s!) and find a skirt to wear, and go about  your day adorned in it. If you really want to kick it up a notch, you  can design and sew your own special skirt for the day, or simply adorn  one with buttons and other accessories to really strut your own personal  style.
Another way to celebrate National Skirt Day is by wearing a novelty  skirt. If you take a look online, you will see that there are many  different novelty skirts that you can purchase today. This includes  skirts that are based on different eras, as well as skirts that are  decorated based on cartoon characters. Why not add a little bit of fun  to your wardrobe on National Skirt Day and wear something that no one  would expect you to?
You can also spend some time learning about the skirt and the history  of this garment. You will be fascinated to discover how skirts have  developed over the years, as well as the different trends that were  loved throughout different eras. The skirt can be traced back to Ancient  Egypt, and it was actually men who wore them, not women! They were  called the Shendyt, and they were basically a wraparound skirt that was  created using flax – a type of linen that was locally sourced. The airy,  lightweight material was ideal for the hot and humid weather in Egypt.
You will be able to see plenty of photographs of skirts throughout  the ages. In the Middle Ages, fuller skirts were worn and they were  often sewn to the bodice. You then had less trimmed and less restrictive  skirts in the 19th century, as women became more active. Of course,  flash forward to the 20th century and we have seen some iconic looks,  with the humble skirt being taken to new levels.
From A-line skirts to flapper style skirts, there are so many  exciting trends that have made their mark over the past few decades. Why  not post some of your favorite skirt flashbacks on Instagram and get  your friends involved too? You could even invite some loved ones around  to have a few drinks with one necessity on the dress-code: wear a skirt!

National Buffet Day
Everybody loves a buffet, so imagine having a whole day dedicated to one! National Buffet Day is about hosting or attending a buffet of epic proportions—enjoy a table spread with enough food to keep you full for a whole day, and interesting enough to make eating all day fun and exciting!
The History of National Buffet Day
The buffet table has its origins in brännvinsbord—a type of schnapps made in 16th century Sweden.
How to Celebrate National Buffet Day
The way you celebrate National Buffet Day depends on where you are and what your preferences are.
If you’re not anywhere near Nevada, or crowded places are just not your thing, consider preparing your own buffet at home to celebrate National Buffet Day.
Whatever you decide to do, don’t forget to celebrate National Buffet Day!

International Day of the Seafarer
Get ready to set sail, because June 25 is the Day of the Seafarer. This is day for seafarers of all stripes, from Coast Guards, to Navies, to every fisherman and marine biologist and cruise ship captain. If your job involves a large quantity of salt water, then this day is dedicated to you. The first documented sea voyage was made around 3200 BCE, and was bankrolled by the Egyptian Pharaoh Snefru (he also built at least three pyramids during his reign). Today, over 90% of global trade is done by sea, since it is still the most cost-effective way to transport goods. Marine biologists and oceanographers from every country have dedicated their lives to learning more about the ocean depths, and humans from every walk of life keep going to the sea to explore the planet.
International Day of the Seafarer timeline
3200 B.C. A’right, I’m Off
The first documented sea voyage is made with the support of Egyptian Pharaoh Snefru.
June 2010 Resolution Adoption
At the Conference of Parties to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), the resolution establishing the Day of the Seafarer is adopted.
2011 First Celebration
The Day of the Seafarer is celebrated for the first time.
2020 Theme of the Year
The theme for the Day of the Seafarer campaign is “Our Seafaring Future.”
International Day of the Seafarer Activities
Visit your local Coast Guard outpost
Read a book or watch a movie about life at sea
Donate to a maritime charity
If you live near a Coast Guard outpost, you might consider dropping in. This is a great opportunity not only to learn more about what the Coast Guard does, but also to thank them for doing their jobs so well. (Baked goods rarely go amiss in that situation.) If you don’t live near a Coast Guard outpost, you can always make a monetary donation online.
While Titanic is a classic, it may be time to branch out into lesser-known stories. From high-stakes adventures like The Finest Hours or Treasure Island, to heart-rending disaster stories like The Perfect Storm or The Poseidon Adventure, maritime stories are always rife with drama. And okay, isn’t it about time you watched Jaws again?
The Coast Guard isn’t the only organization that accepts donations. Oceana is an international group dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans and the species that live there, while the Family Support Project provides emotional and practical support for the families of seafarers. There are dozens of other causes as well—which would you like to support?
Why We Love International Day of the Seafarer
Trade by sea is vital to the economy
Scientific research is vital to human life
Seafarers keep us safe
As we mentioned before, the vast majority of international trade is done by sea, due to relatively low costs and greater economy of space. If trade by sea were limited in some way, or stopped altogether, there is no way that the global economy would be able to function. In other words, we owe our current ways of life to those who travel the seas.
Not only does trade by sea make up most of the global economy, but also the oceans themselves take up about 70% of the planet itself. Over 1 million species of plants and animals live in the ocean, and scientists estimate that there may be up to 9 million species in there that haven’t been discovered yet. Everything we know about the ocean today, we know thanks to the tireless work of thousands of oceanographers and marine biologists who dedicate their lives to the study of those watery depths.
When it comes to saving people’s lives at sea, we have two lines of defense. We have Navies keeping us safe in times of war, and we have Coast Guards to keep us safe from natural disasters, criminal activity, and environmental deterioration. The ocean, as important as it is, poses a significant threat to American life, and without those organizations, humans might be in even more danger.
