October 21st 1971 tragedy struck when an explosion at Clarkston Toll shopping centre, killing 12.and injuring over 100 more.
At the time it was the worst peace-time explosion in Scotland, leaving 22 dead and more than 100 injured, many of them seriously. Most of the casualties were women shop assistants or housewives out shopping. For days prior to the explosion, everyone shopping at The Toll had complained of the overpowering smell of gas and, all that week, workmen had been digging up the road, searching for the source.
The night before they had worked under arc lights and, by the next morning, the terrace of shops was given the all-clear, although the smell still lingered. The force of the blast, equivalent to a 300lb bomb, blew out the front of 10 shops and ripped the heart out of the modern shopping centre.
A passing bus took the full force of the blast. One passenger died instantly. All the others were badly injured.
More than half the shops simply disappeared. The car park above the shopping terrace collapsed, with more than 20 vehicles adding to the debris. The rescuers toiled on through that night and the whole of the following day. Passing pedestrians joined police and firemen desperately tearing at rubble.
More than 100 police officers and 20 fire-brigade units, and every available ambulance in Glasgow was called to the scene.
They transferred casualties to the Victoria Infirmary and Hairmyres, where every available doctor and nurse was called in for duty, helped by colleagues from as far afield as Dumbarton, Glasgow, and Paisley.
The cause of the explosion was never fully discovered.

Alexander's older brother is living in Saint-Petersburg and found out about the tragedy from his friends from Izhevsk.
- They lived quietly and there weren't any coflicts, - tells Sergey Kopytov. - I was shocked when I found out about what happened. My brother was always quiet, calm, but we didn't communicate with each other for quite a while.
Nadezhda Zavarzina, the director of the Humanities and Law Lyceum N. 68 said that she remembered Alexander as a quiet and calm person unlike his older brother Sergey who was "positive".
- I know his mother, we are in a good relationship. She's very friendly, we always greeted her. I can tell only positive things about her - she's an acvitist, worked in a factory. But her son was unsociable. I never heard about any conflicts, I never heard anything about him. His older brother is also active, studied well, but I haven't seen him lately because he moved to another city.
Anton, the suspect's classmate who studied together with him for 2 years said that Alexander didn't study well and enrolled into college after the 9th grade.
- We were studying together from the 5th to the 7th grade. He was very introverted, I would say he had many complexes. Not many people from our grade or from the parallel one talked to him. He didn't study well, he was very rude towards teachers… I don't even know what he was interested in.

“WHEN SEWER GAS BLASTS ROCKED MONTREAL,” Vancouver Sun. December 7, 1932. Page 1. ---- Top picture shows the debris of the three-storey building on De Fleurimont and St. Vallier Streets, Montreal, that collapsed during a series of terrific sewer gas explosions recently. Three families in the house escaped before the building collapsed.
Below, still dazed from her remarkable experience, is 24-year-old Rose Poulin, resting at the Ste. Justine Hospital. She fell three storeys into burning debris when one of the explosions wrecked the building. That's Nurse Grenior by her side.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — At least 31 people were believed to have died in a gas explosion in a disused mine shaft in South Africa that happened last month but was only now coming to light, authorities said Friday.
The suspected illegal miners were believed to have been killed on May 18 and most of their bodies were still underground, South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy said.
Authorities were being prevented from sending a search team into the mine to retrieve bodies because there were still dangerously high levels of methane gas in the shaft, the department said in a statement.
It said it was considering various options to “speedily deal” with what was “a unique and strange situation.”
Illegal prospecting is rife in South Africa’s old gold-mining areas, where miners go into closed and often dangerous mine shafts to dig for deposits.
The government department said it had received information that three bodies had been recovered after they were brought to the surface by other illegal miners. Another 16 suspected illegal miners who were also in the shaft have handed themselves over to authorities, police said.
Authorities said they believe the miners are nationals from neighboring country Lesotho. Lesotho’s foreign ministry recently passed information onto South African authorities on the incident.
The mine, which was previously owned by Harmony, South Africa’s largest gold-mining company, was last operational in the 1990s, the mineral resources department said. It is located in the city of Welkom in the central Free State province.

There was a big gas explosion in my neighborhood last night. Two homes were obliterated and a few cars wrecked, but no one was killed & damage to other homes was superficial. It happened about 7 blocks from my house and it woke us all up it was so loud. I'm glad no one was injured but wow what a shitty way to start the new year! If we can find the homeowners we're gonna see about donating to them.

listen i currently look like a addams family character reject and my self image has taken the biggest hit it's ever fucking taken but i stared fire in THE EYES and somehow i didn't come out of it fucking blind. i've been crying on and off since it happened. i have no idea where im going with this. please be careful with fire. i think i value my life a little (a lot) more now. i am scared to go outside looking like this. i am grateful i look like this. i am a mess of conflicting emotions. i don't know whether to thank my luck or divine intervention. idk whether to think myself stupid for causing the most preventable accident and burning my own face. i am very conflicted. please bear with me while i dump this all ot somewhere bc i can't simply let it fester inside my brain. i am scared of the mirror currently. i know my skin will heal. god let it heal faster. at least it wasn't my eyes. at least i didn't die.

“CHATHAM CHILDREN BURNED IN BLAST,” Montreal Star. November 7, 1932. Page 2. ---- CHATHAM, Ont., Nov. 7 - (CP) Charles McGuigan, 14, and his sister Sylvia, are recovering from burns suffered yesterday when gas escaping from a water well on the Cedar Farm of their mother exploded without warning.
The fire which followed destroyed the small wooden building over the well, housing the gas pumping apparatus, but did not reach any other farm building and the flames were finally extinguished with wet blankets.
The children had entered the pump-house for the purpose of starting a small engine used for pumping water. When the boy turned on the ignition switch, the explosion followed. It is believed natural gas fumes had filled the building.
