Today I visited an exhibit on South-east and South-American art, the link that exists between them as places of colonised peoples who had to reclaim, reinvent their artistic identity. One part of the exhibit is a library where you're free to browse books they've collected on the subject of these usually tropical places on which Western people have surimposed their fantasies of exotism and primitivism. One part was about Bali, the other about Tahiti.
In the later, Gauguin was of course heavily represented. For context, Gauguin is famous for going to live in Tahiti and painting very impactful pictures of the landscapes and women there. Impactful because they captured the imagination of European artists with this faraway land. Impactful because it fueled these fantasies of an exotic, "untouched" people and way of life. French history is rife with this tendency. The poet Baudelaire. The book Paul et Virginie (which vaguely annoyed me even when young and ignorant, because I lived in a tropical island, I knew what it was like, and this book sounded like bullshit, and I'm pretty sure it would piss me off to reread it now).
Anyway, I picked up a book about Gauguin that happened to be in French and read a little, and hah. I know he "married" 14 years old tahitian girls when he was there. I know he did that and I'm sure he did more. But that book only mentionned he painted "his mistress".
How sad and revolting reality is, that they hide behind such euphemisms. I should have checked the date this book was written when I think about it. Juxtaposed with the frank, if rather vague, information that had been provided just before bellow his paintings, it was almost funny.
