I read these two books back to back, an unplanned diptych on agriculture and impending drought, one set in the Great Plains of the U.S. and the other in the grasslands (I am suspect this is the wrong term but I am in a rush to close out this post) of Australia. I think about soil more frequently than one might suspect for someone who lives in an apartment without access to any dirt beyond a few pots. I also think about composting toilets ALL THE TIME (see the managing manure book linked below the other book descriptions).
I really loved the Bessire book, I've checked it out as an ebook and an audiobook from the public library. But there is a story from Chapter 3 of the Massy book that has lingered for weeks now. It is a story in the archives, from a 19th century sheep farmer in Australia who lamented that the great grassland sheep station he had taken over in 1840 had deteriorated to barren ruts by 1853. The farmer sold the land and moved away. In thirteen years, extractivism had stripped the earth. Later in the book, Massy writes about landscape dyslexia, how most of we can no longer read the land. I wonder about those first settlers, marveling at the fertility of the land, and how badly they misread the landscape.
Running Out: In Search of Water on the High Plains by Lucas Bessire (2021)
The Ogallala aquifer has nourished life on the American Great Plains for millennia. But less than a century of unsustainable irrigation farming has taxed much of the aquifer beyond repair. The imminent depletion of the Ogallala and other aquifers around the world is a defining planetary crisis of our times. Unlocking Early Life
The first few days after sperm meets egg are crucial. One delicate cell division after another leads to a structure called a blastocyst, which will eventually become an embryo. These vital and earliest stages of pregnancy could be considered a well kept secret as they are particularly difficult to study. Shedding more light on them could offer many answers on how to improve in vitro fertilisation (IVF) success rates and the causes of miscarriage. ‘Artificial blastocysts’ called blastoids have already been grown to study early development, but the process of creating them was very inefficient. Researchers have now developed a method for larger scale production. With the new method, more blastoids can be generated with fewer starting resources. But most importantly, they still retain the ability to form embryo-like structures (pictured), with genes key to helping a developing blastocyst penetrate the womb lining switched on (highlighted in pink and cyan), and therefore making them useful for studying implantation.

What if food production should be an activity that nearly everyone has to be involved in, like cooking or taking a bath? [...] Think of the fact that the US has more acreage in lawn than in cultivated crops.
Turning agriculture into a business that sells industrialized commodities doesn’t work very well anyway, which is why farming has so often been subsidized. [...] Crops are not really commodities. They grow in the natural world and grow at their own sweet, natural pace, one that is not easily adjusted to supply and demand, much less artificial money interest.
Critics often tell me that my idea of feeding the world with small-scale garden farms is naïve. [... The best permaculture book to start with
The title really says it all. For those unfamiliar with the concept, permaculture, as defined in this work, is "applied disturbance ecology". The fundamental idea being that working with the land allows an optimized native ecosystem which is productive, supports life, and requires minimal maintenance. The term was first proposed by Bill Mollison and Dave Holmgren and first published in book form in

Incredible resource! 6 stars out of 5.
I've been gardening, homesteading, medium scale farming/ranching in three states (MO, northern CA & NM) and five properties in the past nearly 50 years, have an extensive library, subscribe to several excellent relevant publications, am constantly learning and expanding my skills & horizons. This is, hands down, one of the best, most comprehensive and HELPFUL books of which I am aware. Yes, I have and love resources from John Seymour, Gene Logsdon, Sepp Holzer, Joel Salatin, a HUGE amount of permaculture texts, gardening, homesteading, grass farming, sustainability, etc., WHICH ARE IMMEASURABLY VALUABLE, but this is right up there with the best. I enthusiastically echo several other excellent reviews, but cannot understand the scathingly negative ones. For my purposes, Ben has written a wonderfully refreshing blend of PRACTICAL and possible permaculture homesteading book from his PERSONAL experience. I've plenty of books gathering dust telling me what to do and what should work...but not many willing to admit when it doesn't (particularly the permaculture books). It is concise despite covering an impressive array of material. Not everything that "experienced" old-timers do works equally well in all situations and I appreciate the author's honest reporting of what is or is not working historically and currently on his particular property at various stages of its development/reclamation. It often takes several years of working with a property to get a feel for what it wants and needs in terms of plants, animals, water, amendments...especially if one's experience is with vastly divergent enterprises and climatic challenges. Regardless of what we know (or think we know), one can always learn from others' successes, mistakes, ideas, experience. While most of the charts & graphs were not helpful for my personal learning styles, no doubt other folks loved them. He wisely presented the material in various formats to reach the widest audience. I appreciate Ben's willingess to share their project journey thus far and look forward to his subsequent reports...books.

this is a great book. Ben Falk goes the extra mile to write information that other permaculture books don't.He starts from a more advanced knowledge which i really appreciate. It gets frustrating reading books on sustainablility and they start at a beginners level and you are left fishing for information that is new...not so with this book!...if you want really good information this is the book....i bought this book a year ago and left it in my car, someone broke into my car and stole it ...rrrrgh....so finally bought it again and was not disappointed.

Highly recommend as a launching off point by building the framework ...
Takes a rare and systemic approach to permaculture as a tool for self-sufficiency. The logic and theory utilized in no way detract from the allure of this lifestyle, but rather seems to remove some of the mysticism surrounding the modern civilized views of returning to a simpler life through skills and resiliency. This is not a how to do manual as much as it is a how to think; introducing multiple methods and ideas as small parts of a coherent system requiring the end user to research individual components more deeply in order to find their own approach on their own site.

A fantastic book that uses simple, yet sophisticated language to illustrate how truly living off the land is possible. It's a book you will find yourself going back to time and time again for knowledge not only about how to have a homestead that doesn't do bad, but a homestead that actually improves the world by sequestering carbon and capturing rainfall. A must read for anyone who wants to grow food on scale.
