So when Darcy went to fix the Lydia/Wickham situation, he first tried to get Lydia to return home, only bribing Wickham into marrying her when she wouldn't. This is sensible by modern standards, but we know from everyone else's reactions Lydia *failing* marrying Wickham would bring the Bennet family shame. Darcy knows this, and doubt he planned to leave the situation as is. So how did he originally plan to fix it?
I think Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy was gonna channel his inner Emma Woodhouse (didn't have to dig far, they're very similar people) and play matchmaker. In my headcannon Darcy checked his "Possible Husbands for Georgie" list against his "People who owe me Gargantuan favours" list and offer whoever came up money to marry Lydia.
Now, he would want to spare the Bennets of as much of the scandal as possible, and wouldn't want to take the merit in front of Lizzie, so all would most likely happen discreetly through Mr. Gardiner, while Lydia was in London, and she would move to her husbands immediatly after.
However, I wanna propose a different scenario: Lydia returns to Meryton. Scandal ensues, the Bennets are disgraced. Then, within two weeks, a random well-off man shows up intent on courting Lydia and *only* Lydia. He heeds nobodys warnings and gives no explanations. Lydia loves it. Every other mum in Meryton is furious. The Bennets are confused and paranoid. Imagine the drama. The intrige. The million questions still unawnsered long after Lydia eventually gets married and leaves. Bingley marries Jane (cause of course Darcy still told him he'd been wrong to pull them apart, and Bingley would) and Darcy's still somewhat around. Maybe him and Lizzie get together, maybe not, but every time the topic comes up he gets all sheepish and awkward and she gets suspicious and it's a thing. It's their new dynamic.

Following your answer on JAFF first names, how likely is it that Mr Darcy senior is called George?
This question is in reference to this post.
I believe that one is pretty likely. Mr. Darcy Sr. is George Wickham's godfather (so possibly named in honour of him) and he has a daughter named Georgiana. His only son is named using his mother's last name so it's the father's "turn". I would say it's even more likely because of the massive age gap between Darcy and his sister, they probably weren't thinking there would be another living child.
We see gender-flip naming in Lady Susan, her daughter is named Frederica after her husband Frederick. We also see John Knightley naming the second boy after himself after the first is named for his father-in-law (Henry and John respectively).
Also, it would be so weird if George Wickham had married Georgiana and they were George & Georgiana... good thing Austen prevented that one. (I mean I know there were other reasons but still! lol) But with so many people with similar names in this era it must have happened. Henry & Henrietta,...

my 10th book read in 2023 - Accomplished: A Georgie Darcy Novel by Amanda Quain
this one caught my eye at the bookstore and i HAD to pick it up! i'm basically legally obliged to read every single austen retelling i come across, lol. it ticks all the boxes of your standard YA novel--nothing sticks out in that regard. though i enjoyed the way the author mapped the characters and plot points onto a modern setting, i felt like the entire time i was just yelling at the page like "georgiana, what are you doing, girl, why the fuck are you talking to wickham AGAIN??" i know we don't see a ton of her in the original p&p, but i like to think georgiana would be a little smarter than that. ah well. maybe i'm just over YA as a genre at this point. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Please vote based on their depiction in the books, not the movies. (I'm looking at you, fans of 2005!Darcy and Georgie!) Other than that, use whatever criteria you want. Sibling goals? Most loving? Most entertaining and fun? Most realistic? Up to you!
These are in alphabetical order by last name, so read the whole list before voting!
I have a worst Austen siblings poll too.

Kitty and Georgiana’s attempts at matchmaking are one of my favorite parts of An Ever-Fixed Mark. Did they have any additional offscreen plots? What were they hoping to achieve by locking Lizzy and Darcy in random places? Would you ever consider doing a oneshot epilogue for Kit and Tom?
Aw thanks! I’m sure they had a lot of wacky times being out in society together and figuring out if they liked any young men they met, while ultimately concluding that any man would be an Intruder into their Georgie-Kitty time. Just a lot of gals being pals and not quite realizing more than that is necessarily an option for them. They’re just best friends who can’t bear to be separated!! Totally normal friendship times etc.
Re: locking them in places- Georgiana was convinced that if Darcy and Elizabeth just talked to each other for five minutes, all their problems would be solved. (Which, to be fair, it was.) Her main problems were a) she couldn’t think of a way to get that conversation started because she’s very shy and retiring herself, and b) she relied on Kitty to come up with how to implement such a plan. Kitty, who likes novels and tropes without being very good yet at understanding how or why component parts worked together, decided that this would be the best method of getting them to talk.
Also haha, I’m flattered but there’s like… 500k words of that particular universe. I don’t think I have any more words left for that one!

How George Wickham manipulated Elizabeth Bennet and thus the reader
Part 1
When we are first introduced to George Wickham we are told that he's an acquaintance of Mr. Denny, whose return Lydia had gone to Meryton to inquire about.
Mr. Denny introduced Mr. Wickham to the Bennet sisters and informed them that Mr. Wickham had recently accepted a commission in the corps. We are told that his is the most gentlemanlike appearance, that he's very handsome and very charming.
Saon after Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley come upon them and Elizabeth notices some tension between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham.
Elizabeth happening to see the countenance of both as they looked at each other, was all astonishment at the effect of the meeting. Both changed colour, one looked white, the other red. Mr. Wickham, after a few moments, touched his hat - a salutation which Mr. Darcy just designed to return. What could be the meaning of it?- It was impossible to imagine; it was impossible not to long to know.
Elizabeth catches this moment and her curiousity is instantly piqued. She longs to know the reason behind this cold greeting that the shared history between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham.
During Mrs. Phillips' supper party Mr. Wickham seated himself beside Elizabeth and conversed with her freely after Lydia became engrossed in the game of lottery.
While Mr. Wickham talked at leisure to Elizabeth, she was more than happy to listen to him but what she really wanted to know was the history of his acquaintance with Mr. Darcy. She, of course, couldn't ask him herself for it would be improper so she stewed in silence but her curiosity was relieved when when Wickham himself mentioned Netherfield.
He inquired how far Netherfield was from Meryton; and, after recieving yet answer asked in a hesitating manner, how long Mr. Darcy had been staying there.
Wickham, had no reason to breach this topic, unlike Elizabeth who was prejudiced against Mr. Darcy and in search of all and any reason to despise him.
It's most likely that he had noticed that she had noticed the cold meeting between Mr. Darcy and himself. He also knew by that point that the Bennets were somewhat acquainted with Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy in a manner of speaking.
So, what he's doing is damage control. Besmirching Darcy's name and credibility before Darcy gets the chance to reveal his true sordid history.
He's baiting Elizabeth, trying to see if she's interested in this topic. Elizabeth happily obliges him. She takes the bait and adds about Derbyshire. Her interest in the topic might've been apparent to a man like Wickham.
He tells Elizabeth that he has been connected with the Darcy family since his infancy.
Then he himself adds that she might be surprised hearing his claim after witnessing the cold nature of their meeting.
"You may well be surprised, Miss Bennet, at such an assertion, after seeing, as you probably might, the very cold manner of our meeting yesterday. -Are you much acquainted with Mr. Darcy?"
He is lightly suggesting that she might've seen their meeting. He might be fully aware that she had seen it but did not wish to come across too forcefully and alarm her. Or he might not be aware of it but still taking a chance to see if should would respond.
Again, Elizabeth takes the bait and gives him the answer he desires. She states that she finds Mr. Darcy very disagreeable.
This was the chance Wickham was waiting for. This was his opportunity to malign Darcy to this person who's already turned against him. Surely Elizabeth would be much more receptive to his point of view and more willing to believe Darcy of all manner of wrong doing.
"I have no right to give my opinion," said Wickham, "as to his being agreeable or otherwise. I am not qualified to form one."
Wickham said these words and added that he could not help but be impartial to Darcy but he believed Elizabeth's opinions.
Wickham said this and then he goes on to very openly give his opinions on not just Darcy, but his sister Georgiana who Elizabeth didn't even know. At this point, he and Elizabeth are still almost strangers. He's very open to discuss Darcy with all and sundry while also pretending that he would never gossip about him. He's contradicting himself. But Elizabeth is too prejudiced against Darcy to pick up on these things.
Elizabeth urges him to continue by saying that nobody likes Mr. Darcy and are disgusted with his pride.
Wickham says that the world is blinded by Darcy's consequence, fortune and imposing manners.
He's fishing.
Elizabeth, who has always prided herself to be a good judge of character, flatters herself that she is the only one who truly sees Darcy for what he is. She does not consider the fact that the amiable, well liked Mr. Bingley, who has known Darcy for longer than she has, is friends with him.
Wickham goes on to eulogise the late Mr. Darcy very prettily and further sneaks the hint of Darcy's supposed wrongdoings to him in the conversation. He makes himself appear the bigger person by very graciously forgiving Mr. Darcy for his father's sake.
After some time, Wickham steered the conversation to his past, stating that he was a sociable person and that the church was his desire. He lightly hints that Darcy had something to do the misfortune that befell him and became the obstacle in his path.
He states that the late Mr. Darcy was his Godfather and had bequeathed the living to him but that Darcy willingly disregarded his father's wishes and gave it to someone else- just because Wickham openly criticized him.
This is a very grave accusation. Stating that Darcy knowingly gave the living to another man and disregarded his father's wishes is a slur against Darcy's character.
Wickham openly paints him as a dishonest, dishonorable man.
If he had stated these things to a close friend, it might've been understandable. For him to say these things to a near stranger, only a few days after their first meeting, knowing full well that Darcy was absent is improper.
After Elizabeth finds out the truth, she is herself struck by the impropriety of their conversation. But at this moment, she's firmly determined and set in her opinions of Mr. Darcy.
Wickham is a mastermind. A manipulator. He's older and much more experienced that Elizabeth. He knows how to probe people's secrets, how to pique their interests. How to appear charming and gentlemanlike. How to lure people in with false sense of security. How to present himself as harmless and further a s the wronged party.
During this conversation, Elizabeth is eating out of the palm of his hand. She's accepting of even the most egregious of claims. Throughout the entire conversation, Wickham keeps the upper hand. While Elizabeth believes that she's the one who is getting things out him, she does not realise that she's only being told what Wickham wants her to hear.
If a smart and sensible young lady like Elizabeth who is known for being quick and full of wit is taken in by this charming scoundrel, what hope did fifteen year old sheltered Georgiana or a sixteen year old Lydia have against his charms.
To be continued.
Apologies for any errors, grammatical or otherwise. English is not my first language. Stated above are simply my opinions and and things that I've come across during a little bit of research.
