King Gervase and Queen Eileen of Schmiedland are well-loved, though politics and opposing parties would naturally disagree. Unfortunately, they're both dying of what is presumed to be neurological poisoning because *someone* wanted them out of office.
King Quentin and Queen Mari are the rulers of Berthingtonn, with Draybin as the Prime Minister. The king and queen are well respected. Draybin has lost a lot of popularity over the years due to empty promises.
The Lady Regent Maile Waterflower, who is presiding over Edansa while Princess Kenna Oceancliff reaches an age where she can take over, is a very conservative ruler in that she is keeping Edansa largely to itself. However, this has allowed the Admiralty to take more liberties.
The Queen Matron of Eswaisil is respected and feared. Mostly feared. She is an imposing person and a force to be reckoned with. People don't *dislike* her, at least not openly. But also she's been ruling for as long as anyone can remember.

Another Helping Of Mince Pie
Continuing the #history of #mincepies and explaining why mincemeat is called #mincemeat and where does #fish come into the story?
Cooks and bakers in the 17th century were keen to explore the potential of the mince pie, becoming ever more adventurous with their recipes. Thomas Dawson delighted his readers in The Good Housewife’s Jewel (1598) with a recipe for a spiced pie using the humbles or innards of a deer, while others used one or more of tongue, lamb’s stones otherwise known as testicles, udder, and tripe. Instead of…

Whatever trades or occupations women's aspirations or needs led them to, there remained also the many domestic roles that women were expected to perform. And in an age when doctors were expensive, this included proficiency in preparing medicines for their families. Indeed, this was the first virtue of 'a complete woman', considered the writer Gervaise Markham in his 1615 tract on […] The English Housewife. He provided recipes for treating a wide range of disorders, from excessive sweating to headaches and the alarmingly named 'frenzy'.
The English housewife was, contemporaries considered, almost a doctor in her own home. Were one of her household struck down with a fever, she should take spoonfuls of rosewater, aquavite (an alcoholic spirit), running water, vinegar and the fascinatingly named dragon water, as well as half a spoonful of mithridate – a semi-mythical remedy that would be rather hard for the average Tudor woman to obtain – and beat them all together before offering it to the afflicted person. If a family member were to be troubled with a sore, she could make a poultice from elder leaves soaked in milk, and then strained, before boiling the concotion until it was thick.
For the dreaded 'frenzy' or inflammation of the brain, beetroot juice should be squirted up the nose in order to 'purge and clean [the] head exceedingly'. Ale could then be drunk, to which boiled violet leaves and lettuce were added to 'suddenly bring [the patient] to a very temperate mildness, and make the passion of the frenzy forsake him'.

Later he recalled this wish without satisfaction, since it was granted in that heavily ironic fashion which the gods appear to consider amusing.

Some interesting things I found while doing some research on the origin of the name Ambrose: (If this has already been pointed out, apologies!)
Tumblr media
I know the given name's meaning is more linked to god-like rather than immortality (although those concepts are definitely linked.) The theme of immortality is very relevant to Ambrose and Vincent. He encased dead and alive bodies in wax giving them an immortal second life.
Tumblr media
But also, Saint Ambrose is the patron saint of bees, beekeepers, wax melters, and candlemakers, which is a more direct, but still very clever, reference by the writers.
Tumblr media
Saint Ambrose's father describes him as having a 'honeyed tongue', which doesn't always have a positive meaning.
Tumblr media
This sounds like Bo with his placating words, leading Wade and Carly around Ambrose with all his little excuses about that damned 15-inch fan belt.
Tumblr media
"The twin brothers Gervase and Protase are considered the first martyrs of Milan as Saint Ambrose, guided by a vision, unearthed their remains in 386. The martyrs appeared to Saint Ambrose in an apparition."
Twin brothers, martyrs who would eventually be venerated as saints themselves, appeared to Saint Ambrose in a vision. This led to the discovery of their buried remains.
"...We found two men of marvelous stature, such as those of ancient days. All the bones were perfect, and there was much blood."
These parallels, coincidences—whatever you want to call it—are just very interesting.

The Long Divorce
The Long Divorce by #EdmundCrispin #GervaseFen #CrimeFiction #BookReview
A review of The Long Divorce by Edmund Crispin – 230914 Also known as A Noose for Her, The Long Divorce, originally published in 1951 and the eighth in Crispin’s Gervase Fen series, is another excellent book from a fine writer who combines an intriguing plot with more than a dash of humorous writing. It is also another book where a bit of knowledge of classics from English literature comes in…
