They were making a sequel for the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters and they needed the garage of my childhood house to film a car wreck scene. I got a picture with Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Leslie Jones.

The unfortunate legacy of The Force Awakens and the Star Wars sequels
Tumblr media
The fact that The Force Awakens made so much money in 2015 has been a lead weight around Hollywood's neck for the better part of a decade now.
We're *STILL* seeing decades-late sequels that imitate the Star Wars sequels' WORST elements.
Specifically:
Make sure your classic character(s) has/have been totally miserable and/or failures since they were last seen. Yes, even though it’s been at LEAST a decade, they should’ve been suffering the whole fucking time.
Erase at least one character's growth (or sometimes even their base character traits) entirely, resetting them back where they started in their first film (or, alternatively, rendering them unrecognizable).
Kill off some of those legacy characters ASAP to ensure they have no hope of ever achieving the happy ending you once promised/implied.
Work in obvious repeats of prior movies’ events and scenes so the audience can be like “Oooh, I remember when they said/did that in the other movies,” resulting in them feeling like they’re in on something and are therefore validated.
In fact... maybe just copy/paste the entire plot from an earlier entry? No surprises means MAXIMUM NOSTALGIA.
These things were all present in The Force Awakens and even repeated for The Last Jedi. But they wound up just being pioneers of a shitty trend.
Some examples:
Terminator: Dark Fate
Ghostbusters Afterlife
The Matrix Resurrections
Scream (2022)
Clerks III
The degree of the severity of these things varies, at least. Maybe not every single legacy character has been completely miserable since we last saw them; it might be only some or even just one of them. I’ll also grant Ghostbusters Afterlife that killing off Egon was the only reasonable choice available to them. Situations like these can help soften the blow... and for those reasons, I don’t hate ALL of the movies I just listed. There’s even one or two I kinda like!
But make no mistake: All of the above lessons/tropes are still shitty ones. The legacy of the Star Wars sequels (TFA most specifically) is still a damning one. I honestly believe that ALL the movies I cited would all be better off if they hadn’t taken ANY cues from TFA’s template.

So back in June I watched all the Ghostbusters films cause it was the anniversary of the original movie and I thought I'd do a quick bullet point review since it's been a bit since I watched them all together.
Ghostbusters (1984)
It's still a classic. Has memorable moments that will live on.
Fun scenes. Going after Slimer is always silly and chaotic.
Peter Venkman is a rough. I actually had a person tell me that Venkman is the reason why they never watched the first movie, and I don't blame them.
Wish there was a bit more build up to the confrontation with Gozer. Would be neat if they kept uncovering clues rather than just the moment they figured it out in the jail cell.
Ghostbusters II (1989)
I don't know why people dunk on this movie, it's great!
You can tell the cast and crew are having more fun and things are a bit more fleshed out.
Venkman actually has some good character growth and is not a total creep!
I actually like the build up to the climax on this one. Throughout the movie, there's a focus on the slime buildup in the city and the flow of the story feels good.
Some fun light scares.
I kinda don't like the whole "the ghosts just stop showing up" thing. It's a trope specifically for this franchise that's not really explained. Just "yeah nothing happened between the movies and people think, we're frauds again! Gotta do it all over again!"
Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016)
This movie gets a lot of undeserved hate thrown towards it for being the female lead reboot. A bunch of misogynist trolls threw a fit and never gave it a shot the moment it was announced.
The cast was great tbh. Everyone seemed to gel with one another.
Chris Hemsworth plays a himbo and we see him with his shirt off.
I really like the main antagonist in this movie. I think his character could have been fleshed out a bit more, but still fun idea.
The gear looks really cool in this movie.
Some scenes do keep going a bit too long and has like not good Saturday Night Live skit energy. I think they relied a bit too much on improv.
How the fuck is Chris Hemsworth the funniest motherfucker alive and why is he so cute?
There's a teeny tiny bit a queerness in this story, but I also feel like there's themes of found family going on here too and I like that.
Chris Hemsworth plays a himbo and we see him with his shirt off.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Trailers do this movie a disservice by making it feel like it's going for a Stranger Things feel, kinda relying a bit too much on nostalgia or even doing the "wow kids these days." It just felt like they didn't have any confidence on the movie itself when marketing this tbh.
The tone is a bit more serious, but honestly I'm fine with it. Still has some funny moments, but it's leaning more into the horror part a bit more.
Watching Phoebe learn more about her grandfather is honestly fun. And this movie does a great job with handing things off to a new generation in a way that doesn't feel like it's disingenuous.
Literally cried at the end. Honestly that ending felt wonderful and it felt like a good tribute to Harold Ramis.
I don't know why, but my first watch of this last year wasn't as good as the second watch this year. I don't know what happened. But I remember the first time I watched this and felt like it was just ok but not my favorite. Maybe it was just a bit of frustration that the sequel to Answer the Call got cancelled before it could even get into full production.
I appreciate the movie using some practical effects. There are just certain elements that you can't mess with in Ghostbusters movie and they nailed it.
Muncher is my least favorite ghost tbh. Idk, there are people who love Muncher and I do like the tardigrade inspired design, but idk, they didn't appeal to me like the other ghosts did.

Katie liked the film. Wants to learn quantum physics now. So she can catch ghosts.
I told her that's fine, but I'm not programming it into her. She has read articles or take classes or whatever.
To be clear, I'm not making her learn the old fashioned way for any character building reasons. I'm just hoping she loses interest before she learns enough to do any real damage.
I may have to warn Ben Solo of her intentions, though. Just in case.

I feel like the reason that goofy 80s comedies like Ghostbusters, Bill and Ted, and now Beetlejuice are getting sequels with a weirdly grandiose presentation was because of the backlash to the 2016 Ghostbusters movie.

Moviemakers are afraid now that if they touch something nostalgic without enough “respect,” the internet will point and howl in one voice “CRINGE!”

'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' Makes Me Feel Good
While “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” may have trafficked a bit too much in nostalgia and fan service, but it still proved to be a fun ride which introduced us to some fun new characters, and it reunited us with old friends we yearned to see again for many years. “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” however, is not burdened as heavily with those things as it hits the ground running with characters and…

I'm thinking about how Trevor immediately runs over to free Lucky from the terror dog husk after Gozer's been defeated. You could just barely hear them calling out from inside, then he calls their name and starts breaking the thing apart with his bare hands, never mind that it looks like solid rock. He's just that determined to save his friend.
Of course, he finds Gary instead (I can't blame him, it took me years to figure out which Terror Dog is which, the only difference is the size of the horns.) After making sure Gary's ok, he runs over to the other husk, which Lucky is already breaking out of, and helps them out. He says "Oh my god, I totally thought I lost you" and looks so concerned.
The way Lucky only answers with "Sorry about that" in a pitiful way breaks my heart, but he stays close to them as they walk back to the house. He's such a sweet boy.
