Empty, completely fucking empty… Basil thought as he stared at the barren interior of his fridge. He went to grab a lone beer when his stomach growled, begging for anything more substantial.

Anxiety rippled through him at the thought of leaving his darkened apartment. I’m hideous, can’t let anyone see me like this… It’d only been a few days since “the incident” and he hadn’t left his place since. He paced for a moment before a pizza menu haphazardly tossed on the ground caught his eye. He shrugged and dialed the number as he slouched back on the couch.

“Gianni’s Pizza what’ll ya have?” Your curt voice had him shoot forward. His heart hammered in his chest at your voice. All at once memories of conversations came to his mind. It’d started as chit-chat, and through months of ordering you two had developed a rapport, even a bit of flirting.

Despite the clipped tone it still hit something inside him. “Hello?” You sighed on the other end, “Look if this is those stupid kids you’re not funny. Im hanging up-“

“No wait!” Basil blurted. “I - I need to place an order, for delivery.”

“Basil?” Your tone softened, “I’m so sorry, these fucking kids -“ you sighed. “You want your usual?”

He nodded. “Hello?” Your voice rang softly in the receiver.

“Sorry! Sorry yeah I guess Pepp-”

“Pepperoni half olives and cheesy bread.” Your voice seemed to lift a bit at the familiarity of the order.

He stopped for a moment, somewhat comforted that you actually remembered. “Ah actually, no olives. Cinnamon bread instead of cheesy.” His hand rubbed across the back of his neck as he paced across the hardwood.

“No? Catherine out of town again?” You asked so nonchalantly it nearly hurt.

“Catherine is, out. Yeah - no she chea-“ Basil stopped himself, you didn’t wanna hear about his personal life. Your gasp nearly made his heart stop.

“You’re joking! What a b-“ you stopped yourself. “It’ll be by in 10 alright? Just hang tight.” You hung up.

Basil crinkled his brow as he stared at the phone, you’d sounded like… like you cared.

The minutes passed faster than he thought possible as he fumbled for cash around his apartment. He figured he could just slip it under the door when you came. No one should see him like this.

A light but antsy knock sounded on the door. “Pizza. It’s me!” Your light voice muffled slightly by the thin door set his nerves alight.

“T-thanks.” Basil called from his side, pressing close and peeking through the peep-hole at your beautiful face.

Confusion etched into your features as you waited for the door to open. “Basil?”

“Oh right, here.” Shuffling sounded as two 20s awkwardly slipped under the front door. “Keep the change.”

“Basil I, I wanted to talk. Are you alright?” He could see you worry your bottom lip as you glanced along the empty hall.

“Fine! Ah, sick I don’t want you to catch it.” He stuffed his hands in his pockets as he watched you. Please please just leave. You couldn’t see him like this…

“Oh ah, feel better.” Sadness knitted your brow a moment before you set the pizza and bag of cinnamon bread on the ground. You went to say something but caught yourself. Instead putting your hand up to the door and signing softly.

Basil watched with his heart hammering away in his chest. Watched until he heard the elevator ding and was sure you’d left. When he opened the door the first this to surprise him is the money still sitting just on the other side, the second was some writing left on the box.

Jennifer: Uh, what is going? Why is there a crowd forming in front of our apartment?

Miki: Uh... is that a helicopter landing on the roof?

Jennifer: What??

Gianni: Hey, Jennifer?! What up, girl? Your ride is here!

Jennifer alarmed: Gianni?! What are you doing up there?!

Gianni: I'm here to take you to some of the best hiking trails in the world. We're going to Mt. Komorebi, baby!

Jennifer: What??? Gianni, are you serious?

Gianni: As a heartache! We need a first date redo.

Jennifer: Gianni, what are you talking about?

Gianni: I know you said you liked our last date, but it made me realize that I need to do better. Especially if I'm going to date a girl as awesome as you. So you said you like nature and walks? I'm taking you to the best place to do that.

Jennifer: Gianni, this is... a lot.

Gianni: I know. And someone really cool once told me to be myself and well... this is me, Jennifer. I'm kind of a lot.

Miki: Aw, I think he's talking about me. You totally have to go, girl!!

Jennifer: You... you really are doing this, huh? Just going all out?

Gianni: Yes, I'm going all out. Besides some other really cool person told me I needed some hobbies. So, let's go see if I like hiking?

Jennifer: Just for the record, are you saying that all of our dates are going to be crazy like this?

Gianni: I'm saying I'm willing to go all out for you if you're willing to give me a chance.

Crowd chants: Give him a chance! Give him a chance! Give him a Chance!

Girl in crowd: Girl, say yes before I do!

Jennifer: Oh my. Well I do really like you, too, Gianni. Even after our last date. You seriously did not have to go to all this trouble for me. You literally could've came over with a box of cold pizza and wine and I'd want to hang.

Gianni: Well, I'm glad to hear that. But, I did spend a lot of money on this helicopter...

Jennifer: Oh, don't worry! I still very much want to go to Komorebi... with you.

Crowd applauses

Gianni: Well, get dressed and get up here, girl. Let's go!

Character actress Nia Vardalos sort of hit the lottery 21 years ago when her screenplay My Big Fat Greek Wedding – based on her large eccentric Greek family – caught the attention of producers Tom Hanks, his wife Rita Wilson and Gary Goetzman who agreed to fund her passion project. (Obviously you know who Hanks and wife Wilson are. And the film Licorice Pizza was loosely based on Goetzman’s young life.)

A sweet, goofy wedding comedy that was made on a shoestring budget of about $5 million, My Big Fat Greek Wedding became a surprise hit, taking in over $367 million.

Honestly, I didn’t see it in the cinema when it was out but was looking forward to reviewing it when it came out on DVD. Truthfully, I thought it was okay, but I was a little underwhelmed. It felt like a much less interesting take of a different family-based ethnic love story, Moonstruck. Eventually it became a bit obsessive about the wedding itself, which is always much more interesting to people getting married than the people surrounding them. I thought it was kind of cute but ultimately very forgettable. However, I do realize that I was in the minority because the film did surprisingly well and became a cult favorite.

And Vardalos has pretty much been living off it ever since.

This new film is Vardalos’ fourth return to the Big Fat Greek well, following a short-lived 2003 sitcom My Big Fat Greek Life and the 2016 sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. Well actually, it’s the fifth return, if you count Vardalos’ 2009 comedy My Life in Ruins, which has an extremely similar story to My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, about a Greek American who returns to the homeland to try to find the meaning of her life. That one is just about similar characters with different names.

Honestly, since the first film none of the others has done particularly well. And, frankly, most people have pretty much forgotten the first film more than two decades on. So, is anyone really waiting for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 all these years later?

I kind of doubt it. At least I hope not, because they will be disappointed. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is even much worse than the original film. (I have to admit, I never saw the second film, so I can’t really comment on that one.)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 careens all over the place tonally, bouncing from silly comedy to wildly celebratory parties, from cliched romantic beats to not-so-dramatic life crises, from maudlin pathos to wacky family and neighbors. And I still don’t get the damned Windex references.

No one in the world – no matter how eccentric and how Greek they may be – is as over the top as nearly every single character in this film. I mean these people are bouncing off the ceilings, constantly in a state of wild emotional highs and lows.

However, Wedding 3 takes Toula (played by Vardalos, who wrote the screenplay and also directed) and her wacky family to Greece for a family reunion and also to deliver the diary of her late father (who was played in the other two films by Michael Constantine, who died in 2021) to his three childhood best friends.

Therefore Toula and her husband (John Corbett), decide to go, taking her now-college-aged daughter (Elena Kampouris) who is hiding the fact that she may be flunking out… yawn. Her grooming-obsessed brother (Louis Mandylor) and crazy aunts (Andrea Martin and Gia Carides), some cousins and probably a few other family members who I can’t even make myself remember, also come along for the ride.

However, her mom, played by the always delightful Lainie Kazan, barely makes an appearance here – and when she finally appears, it is done by Facetime – and then the screenplay drops yet a bit more unnecessary pathos on the storyline by suggesting that she may be suffering from dementia.

Once in Greece, they meet eccentric townspeople, distant relatives and uncover some “shocking” secrets of their dad’s life. But they can’t find the three friends, so Toula starts to melt down about letting her dad down. Eventually, they are found surprisingly easily. Toula goes on and on about how great it is that she found her dad’s three friends – but honestly her husband and her cousins really were the ones who found them. And even they basically just stumbled upon them.

Cue much celebration and yet another over-the-top Greek party scene.  

None of the dramatic reveals is particularly gripping, and much of the comedy falls way flat. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is loud and makes lots of big gestures, but mostly it doesn’t have all that much to say.

That said, Greece looks stunning. If nothing else, you can spend your time checking out the scenery.

Umuwi kaming bulacan ni aj saturday morning. Since may sahod nakapag mcdo ako habang nasa byahe kaya di ako tinoyo kahit pa walang tulog.

Sinundo namin ang pamangkin ko sa bahay nila then sinamahan sa clinic for his vaccine. Mabilis lang naman kami nagantay so keri naman.

After lunch nagpasya kaming mag SM ng mga kapatid ko, pinaggrocery ko kasi sila sa bahay pero may limit kasi tight budget eh hahahaha pinapili ko ng bibilhin ang sister ko na humirit pa ng koko krunch kahit sinabi kong ulam lang ang bibilhin. Humirit din sya ng salamin pang skin care nya daw. Lol. Bumili din kami ng cake kasi 2nd month ng aming giannis.

On our way home, lumakas ulan. Worried ako kasi some parts ng bulacan mataas na tubig. Kawawa naman si orange. Bumili din si justin ng pizza pang meryenda— local pizza, pero it was so good.

Tinopak ako nung pictorial ni tutoy kasi nakakangalay, hirap kuhaan, basta hahaahahah kumain na lang ako sa gilid.

Nung gabi, nagpasya kami magmovie at maginom ng konti. Naka 3 shot lang ako kasi nga antok na. Hindi ko din natapos yung movie.

Tas napanaginipan kong may call ako kaya napabalikwas ako! Tinawanan pa nila ako!! Hahaahaha

Ito din ang unang sleep over ni giannis.

Hindi umiyak si giannis buong gabi so medyo masarap ang tulog namin, parang twice lang sya nanghingi ng milk.

Nakatikim ulit ako ng spaghetti from my mama. Huhuhuhu the best!

Nung dinner, bumili si aj ng maskara ng baboy. Dapat sana tokwa't baboy pero natakam silang lahat sa parang bagnet na itsura ng baboy. Solid! Biro nga namin ay si Cardiac Delights ang pinapunta namin sa bulacan. Lol

Nung hinatid namin sila giannis pauwi, may nakita kaming sawa sa daan! Nakakatakot.

Ilang weeks na lang aalis na ulit tatay ko 🥺 Tatlong beses ko lang syang nakita this uwi. Hays

Miki chuckles: Movers? Really Gianni? It’s not like we have that much stuff. Besides, we got all the muscle we need.

Gianni flat: How flattering. Well, these muscle are ready for a break.

Miki: Well, I’d say your break is well-deserved. You can enjoy your payment of lukewarm pepperoni pizza while I finish unpacking this kitchen stuff.

Gianni: No well-deserved break for Miki?

Miki: Nah, I want to get as much done today as I can. There’s just so much. I guess I’m just eager to get rolling on this fresh start.

Gianni: Well, I’m here to help. Feels like we’re both starting fresh.

Miki: Yeah, how so?

Gianni: You’ve got your new job, new place. I’ve got my new job and, idk, just feels like I’ve got more responsibility now to do better all around.

Miki: Aw, I’m proud of you, Gianni! Your help with my fresh start means a lot and I can already see you on your path to being better.

Gianni chuckles: Thanks. You’re feeling particularly optimistic and inspired this morning, I see.

Miki laughs: Aren’t I always?

Gianni: Sure. Or it’s in the water of this new place you got here.

Miki: Well, another reason to love it, I guess.

Gianni: How’d you find this place anyway?

Knock on the door

???: Knock knock!!!

Miki: Ah, here’s your answer!

???: Hi! You’re officially moving in. Yay!!!

Miki: Well, obviously, with a big thanks to you, Jennifer, for scoping the place out for me and putting in a good word!

Jennifer: Aw, well, when I saw there was a two bedroom available here, it seemed like fate! And, I did have some ulterior motives, with you being in the same building and all.

Miki chuckles: Ah, yes. That will surely have its advantages.

Jennifer: Gosh, I wish I could help but I’ve got this killer final to cram for. I was on my way to the library when I saw your door open.

Miki: Oh, don’t even worry about it! You’ve helped so much already.

Jennifer: Well, I promise once it’s over, I’ll bring over some snacks and we can have a unpacking party. 

Miki: That sounds really fun. But really, don’t feel bad. I’ve got help. You remember, Gianni, don’t you?

Gianni: ‘Sup.

Jennifer: Oh, hi! Yes, I remember. Nice to see you again.

Gianni: Nice to see you, uh, good luck on your exam.

Jennifer: Thank you! I need it. I should get going, but I will be stopping by as soon as I can.

Miki: Cool, just text me. Oh, and if you happen to pass by Fletcher on the basketball court out back, will you tell him to come in for dinner?

Jennifer: You got it! See you. Bye, Gianni!

Miki and Gianni: Bye!

Gianni: Miki.

Miki: What?

Gianni: You have GOT to hook me up with your friend.

Miki: Jennifer? I don’t know, Gianni. She doesn't seem like your type.

Gianni: What? She’s a cute girl. Of course, she’s my type. 

Miki: Yeah, okay. I’ll see what I can do. 

So last time we saw Gianni, his life got turned upside down lol. As you can see, Miki didn’t stay with him long and was eager to move out once Gianni helped her with a job. She got a little apartment in Del Sol.

Gianni is navigating being the president of his dad’s companies. We will see more on how that’s going later. But, what do we think about Gianni eyeing Jennifer???

LeBron James becomes first active NBA player to become a billionaire

It’s good to be the king.

Hitting milestones is nothing new for LeBron James, but the Lakers star just reached one off it. On Thursday LeBron became the first active NBA player to become a billionaire, according to Forbes, after he was given the remainder of his 2021-22 salary from the Lakers.

James is one of three all-time NBA players to hit the billionaire mark, along with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant — both of whom reached the figure following their retirement. While a large portion of James’ wealth came from actually playing ($387M) the majority of his wealth came off the court, through his various endorsement and business deals.

The lifetime deal with Nike he signed in 2015 pays LeBron $32M annually, and will be worth over $1B on its own by the time everything is said and done. In addition “SpringHill Entertainment,” which he owns with Maverick Carter is worth $300M. Significant investments in both the Fenway Sports Group and Blaze Pizza round out the total net worth of the NBA star.

While LeBron stands alone in the NBA, he’s by no means the first active athlete to reach a net worth of $1B regardless of sport. Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiger Woods and Floyd Mayweather are among athletes to become billionaires while playing — and we can add one surprising name to the list. Anna Kasprzak, a decorated Danish dressage competitor who has appeared in multiple olympics is considered one of the wealthiest athletes in the world, however her fortune came from being one of the owners of the footwear and apparel brand ECCO.

It’s unclear if any other active NBA players could hit the billionaire mark. The two with the greatest potential right now are Stephen Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo due to their contracts and business dealings away from the court.
