Type: Romantic Show: ABC’s Once Upon A Time Featured Characters: Snow White and Prince Charming
Once Upon A Time‘s Snow White and Prince Charming quickly became the ultimate fairytale couple when the show first aired. The series could’ve done such an extraordinary job with them if the writing didn’t focus as closely on the plot, but regardless, more often than not, they embodied true love adorably. They were unbreakable, and though we couldn’t usually trust where the writing would lead, we could always trust that Snow and Charming would make it through everything.
Snow and Charming define everlasting; no matter what life threw at the two, they’d find a way to be together—to be one, through every curse, every obstacle, and every separation. They overcame all challenges, and later, they physically shared a heart. Stronger than ever before with every passing season, their love stood as a beacon of hope despite all the antics that continually ruptured. Though the show made them a bit more vanilla than they could’ve been, the adaptation allowed one of the most mundane fairytales the chance to be gorgeously hopeful.

I did tell my friend, when she asked what it was called, when I was serving her some tinned fish earlier. I said: "Oh, it's just something I picked up, It's called fancy feast She believed me for a moment, Just a moment -She was very worried."

so of course I love the wedding but once again pointing out how perfect the lyrics are for Hook & Emma’s history: “There's no storm we can't out run, We will always find the sun, Leave the past and all it's scars”. like seriously soo perfect! or his little nod on “take my hand and join the fight” <3. also love how in the background Josh can’t stop staring at Ginny so loved-up <3

Tami (?) urodziła 2 identyczne kotki - Lenora i Dosię 🥰

Blonde Ginny Goodwin wearing a bucket hat in big love is one of my favorite things.
Only adds to the reasoning that casting her and Jen Mo as mother and daughter in once was perfect.

re: the ask about ouat seasons that mentions how different s1 was - adam and eddy also were very open about the fact they'd been working on what would be s1 for nearly a decade. if you spend that long developing something, it tends to be better than something you have to come up with in a couple of months. s1 was such a contained arc, it really seemed to me like once they got past what they'd developed over that decade, they were utterly lost on where to point the show and the writing absolutely suffered for it exponentially as time went on. they did (reportedly, i never watched it/got into it) a similar thing with their other hit show, lost, where the starting season was tight and intriguing and well-developed and the longer time went on the more tenuous and lackluster the plot got until nothing made sense.
(this is no tea, no shade, but something is deeply amusing to me that ginny goodwin openly LOVED lost, every season of it, given how she clashed with some fans over plot choices in ouat.)
but i also wouldn't be surprised if an outside hand trimmed down s1 into something really good, adam and eddy seem the type to keep some stupid shit in the plot just because they think it's the most exciting thing ever and no one's got the leverage to tell them 12 year olds writing on wattpad have a better grasp on plot construction than they do.
Okay, but LOST wasn't Adam and Eddie's show. They wrote for it (about 20 out of 120 episodes) but the showrunners were Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. Damon Lindelof is the one who allegedly helped them write the first season of OUAT.
And like, yeah, it's true that they were working on that for years, but they also tried to pitch it multiple times and it kept getting rejected. That's where the theory that they had help writing season one came in... supposedly, the show kept getting rejected (which A&E admit), and they went to Lindelof to help them write a pilot that would picked up. Whether that part is true or not, and how much Lindelof wrote, is mostly speculation, as far as I know. But given how similar OUAT is to LOST, I wouldn't be surprised.
LOST didn't decline in quality the way OUAT did. The first season was strong, then they struggled to maintain that to the same degree in seasons 2 and 3 (mainly because they just had too many characters at that point) but they pulled it back together and seasons 4, 5 and 6 were strong again. Nothing made sense, but that was how that show was from the very first episode. It was kind of the main feature, because you didn't know what was going on, but neither did the characters. You learned things as they learned them, and they were sometimes (often) wrong. Or they disagreed with each other about what was going on/what they should do, and you, as the viewer, were left trying to figure it out, until the truth was revealed.
They were also very good with something OUAT failed with, which was that LOST could present a character a certain way, and you'd have a certain opinion of them, then they could reveal one thing about them, and suddenly there was a whole other layer to that character. Like, they could make you hate or distrust a character, and then show you something that made you change your mind. So they felt real. They were all flawed, and they all had good and bad qualities, and they all did good and bad things, depending on the situation. But generally, whatever they did was in character, even if it was the wrong thing to do, because they kept their characters consistent and predictable. (Predictable in a good way, in the way that people are generally predictable)
OUAT struggled with that, and a lot of characters ended up appearing two-dimensional. They had a hard time making characters relatable or deep, and even the ones that were would still act out of character to suit the plot. So then you've got inconsistent characters with inconsistent motivations, and you end up not understanding why that character would act that way, other than it moved the plot along. That was OUAT's biggest problem, tbh.
LOST was written as a mystery that was revealed over the course of the show, and at times they'd reveal that characters were connected in unexpected ways, but when they did, it made something else make sense. OUAT took that to the absolute extreme, where nothing made sense because everyone had to be connected to each other 15 different ways and also all secretly related. So instead the show starting out confusing, and putting the pieces together as you went along, OUAT just made everything more confusing every time they revealed a new thing.
And like, the reason it worked with LOST is that the overall series arc didn't change, and the mythology of the show didn't change. Whenever new information was revealed, or a new plot started, the seeds had already been planted, right from the beginning. Some plotlines made less sense than others, but none were so far out of left field that they didn't fit in with the overall plot of the show. No matter how weird the show got, at the end of the day, they were on the island for a reason, and the reason was slowly being revealed over time, which kept the show coherent overall.
Like, I'm bias because I absolutely love LOST, but also, it also was an incredibly popular show. I just looked it up, and LOST brought in an average of 16 million viewers per episode in season one, and they were averaging 11 million viewers per episode in season six. By comparison, OUAT averaged about 9.9 million viewers per episode, and were down to about 3 million per episode by season 6, and 2 million per episode in season 7.
So, it's not just my opinion that LOST was the better show. LOST was still more popular at the end of its run than OUAT was at any point. And like, OUAT is the show I sold my soul to, because of Swan Queen, but objectively? It really wasn't a good show, especially after season one.
Adam and Eddie just couldn't write a show as complex as LOST, but they used it as their template anyway. It made sense, because they wrote for it, and it was massively successful, but they just couldn't pull it off. And if they spent a decade writing one season, why didn't they use any of that time to roughly plot out the rest of the show?
LOST was absolutely fucking ridiculous, and yet when you were watching it, it didn't seem like it was. Like, if I listed off all of the absolutely impossible things that happened on LOST, compared to what happened on OUAT, I feel like LOST required way more suspension of disbelief than OUAT did, and yet it still felt more believable because the characters were so complex, and they managed to write a show with an outrageous plot, and keep it character driven.
Ask any LOST fan which character death they cried over, and they'll probably list 10 of them. Because you got SO attached to them and you felt the pain of the other characters when they lost someone. And you felt their absence when they were gone. OUAT would kill off characters and move on and you'd forget about them by the next scene because the rest of the characters were already over it. A character died on LOST, and it affected the show, because it changed the dynamic of the group. OUAT was missing that.
The one that comes to mind was in the Underworld, when Cora crossed over and Zelena is bawling her eyes out because she waited her entire life to have a mother and now she's gone, and what does Regina say? She tells her to get back together with Hades... because that's how that show operated. They had an opportunity to delve into that whole dynamic - Regina and Zelena's relationships with their mother, which were completely different and equally messed up, and how they were each going to deal with that loss, and maybe connect with each other. But no. They used it as an opportunity to put Zelena and Hades together, because that served the plot.
And that's an example of everything that was wrong with that show.
