i still do. i always will. a dan/serena playlist (x)
For the good times and the bad—text version of the tracklist (and commentary) under the cut
1. “Middle of Love,” Jake Wesley Rogers. Thesis statement song!!! In the middle of loving you/It's so far from done/You tried to run/I tried to tie your shoes
1. “Middle of Love,” Jake Wesley Rogers. Thesis statement song!!! In the middle of loving you/It's so far from done/You tried to run/I tried to tie your shoes
2. “Lovebug,” Jonas Brothers. This song is all dorky infatuation and I love it for them
3. “Falling in Love,” Cody Fry—for when that infatuation gets deep really, really quickly. Promise you 'til the day that I die/You and I will be falling in love
4. “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” The Police. Even though my life before was tragic/Now my love for her goes on
5. “Wishing Wells,” The Colourist. I'm sick of hearing what if, what if/Just follow what you're feeling for
6. “The Only Exception,” Paramore. Children of divorce hours, specifically in the ‘i need to know why you love me’ type of way
7. “If I Could Take You Home,” Relient K. Oh, look, our first typo on the covers. If I could take you home/I'll be all that you need/The trail of broken hearts you left behind/Should send me running, girl, but I don't mind
8. “Please Don’t Say You Love Me,” Gabrielle Aplin. Fools rush in/And I've been the fool before/This time, I'm gonna slow it down/‘Cause I think this could be more. Tentatively getting back to together song
9. “You Can Call Me Al,” Paul Simon. ‘Congratulations, Don’—this song is just here to be goofy and fun
10. “11:11,” Waterparks. My favorite set of stairs is the one up to your room/And my heavy set of cares evaporates all around you
11. “Gotta Have You,” The Weepies. No amount of coffee, no amount of crying/No amount of whiskey, no amount of wine/No, no, no, no, no, nothing else will do/I've gotta have you, I've gotta have you
12. “Poetry by Dead Men,” Sara Bareiles. I think I got this one off another derena playlist, but whoever it was was right? Fire from embers, how can I make you remember?/With a turn of a phrase, would you turn to me if I say/I still want to be your girl?/I still wanna be your girl in a white T-shirt/Over coffee, stirrin' in the cinnamon/While you read me poetry by dead men
13. “1965,” Zella Day. I never had nobody touch me like I'm glass
14. “No Children,” The Mountain Goats. I am drowning/There is no sign of land/You are coming down with me/Hand in unlovable hand. I’ve metaed before about s6!derena and this sense of like. ‘You’re all I have so here we go’ as opposed to their s1!selves, and I feel like this is… right
15. “Fuckmylife666,” Against Me! I don’t have the heart to match/The one pricked into your finger. Feelings are messy. Also trans Dan subtext because I must
16. “I Don’t Wanna Know,” Fleetwood Mac. Yes we did go from s6 to s5 don’t worry about it—still, it feels very fake dating plot in some ways
17. “Glowing in the Dark,” The Girl and The Dreamcatcher. I've been bitten by the lonely/But when I'm not the only/When I'm, when I'm not the only/One who feels it, maybe it's sick to say/But it helps that you feel the same
18. “First Day of My Life,” Bright Eyes. I’d rather be working for a paycheck/than waiting to win the lottery. This is the start of the ‘what if it got good again’ section haha. Welcome to my derena agenda
19. “One Headlight,” The Wallflowers. We’ll put it all together/We can drive it home/With one headlight
20. “Lucky People,” Waterparks. Let’s be lucky people, you and I
21. “Just What I Needed,” The Cars. It's not the perfume that you wear/It's not the ribbons in your hair/And I don't mind you comin' here/And wastin' all my time
22. “Don’t Take The Money,” Bleachers. This song is like. For the work of relationships? It is, however, also so much fun
23. “All the Small Things,” blink-182. She left me/Roses by the stairs/Surprises let me know she cares. I have thoughts about Gender and being good to each other
24. “Drunk Voicemail,” Pom Pom Squad. I wanna tell you everything that makes me cry/Wanna tell you everything that keeps me up at night/Wanna tell you that I hate you, but I don't know how/When the truth is that I love you more than anyone else
25. “Gold in the Summertime,” Matt Nathanson. Nobody loves you/The way that I do/The way you shine through/Gold in the summertime
26. “Hey Jealousy,” Gin Blossoms. And you know, it might not be that bad/You were the best I'd ever had/If I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago/I may not be alone
27. “See The Sun,” Pete Murray. And where's the love/That we shared go/Can you be the one/Can you see the sun/With me
28. “The Graveyard Near The House,” The Airborne Toxic Event. I love the refrain of Bye, bye, bye to all this dogged innocence for a later derena relationship, but also: We're like two actors playing our parts/Did you memorize your lines? Cause I did/Here's the part where I get so mad/I tell you that I can't forget the past
29. “Notbroken,” The Goo Goo Dolls. And we’re not broken/So please come home
30. “What’s Left,” The Walters. Thesis statement… two!!! This is the depressing version. Tell me what is left 'round here/Other than you my love

The complete list of films featured in 2021′s “31 Days of Oscar” marathon
What follows is the exhaustive list of all 403 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This number is up from last year’s count of 327 and is the second-highest number of films I have ever featured in this marathon (behind the 410 films from 2016). Despite the number, this remains only a fraction of the nearly 5,000 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards. This year’s marathon was harder to plan than usual due to the fact it was presented in alphabetical order - with the exception of any write-ups I did.
BREAKDOWN BY DECADE 1927-1929: 7 1930s: 44 1940s: 63 1950s: 63 1960s: 46 1970s: 25 1980s: 29 1990s: 28 2000s: 25 2010s: 43 2020s: 30
Year with most representation (2020 excluded): 1940 (ten films) Median year: 1964

I was not aware Post modernism had so many definitions so this article was certainly an interesting read. The article mentioned Damien Hirst who is certainly one of my favorite artists that I've been writing a research paper on recently. I identified with the mentioning as I see a bit of myself in Damien Hirst as an artist personally as I’m always looking at random objects and going “how can I incorporate this into art.”
To me post modernism was defined well by the Young British Artists, some of which were mentioned here such as Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin.  The YBA’s sought to create shocking and raw art from non art materials. Traditional materials of high art are considered things such paint, pencil, and canvas. Things that fit neatly in a gallery setting. Post modernism seems to look at things and go “this is art because I say it is” or “this is beautiful because I say it is” or perhaps “maybe art doesn’t have to be beautiful to be enjoyed.” It takes us back to the roots of Marcel Duchamp and his Fountain. Proclaiming something is art because the artist looks at it and says that it is so. This denotes that the artist has a lot of power in their title. Post modernism challenges the tidy structure of the gallery or sometimes fits the bizarre into the gallery without the usage of paint or pencil.
1. Escaping the Confines of Museums: Lightning Field, Walter De Maria, 1977, Pointed Steel Rods: Although this is considered an earth work it is certainly post modern in the way it escapes the museum. It is breath taking union between land and sky that pushes the boundaries of what man can make into art.
2. Collapsing Boundaries Between High and Low art: Girl with Hair Ribbon, Roy Lichenstein, 1965, Oil and Acrylic: This painting certainly reflects cutting the boundaries between high and low art due to the fact that is produced in a traditional high art medium, but reflects the low art style of cheap comic books. Combined, it creates something new.
3. Rejecting Originality: Estate, Robert Rauschenberg, Oil and Silkscreen ink on canvas, 1963: I Think this work reflects objecting originality well because instead of inventing things purely meant for the purpose of aesthetic the work draws off of images one might see daily. Therefore drawing from everyday culture much in the way pop art would.
4. Jouissance: Rhythm Zero, Marina Abramovic, Performance art, 1974: It was hard to really grasp the term and the meaning of it. The most I got out of it is that it is on the verge of something so pleasurable it grasps the threshold of pain. I think Rhythm 0 portrays this well as Abramovic left people in control to do as they pleased with her. This performance brought out the true animalistic qualities of human beings with the allowance of such freedom.
5. Working Collectively: Rrose Selavy, Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray, 1920-1921, photograph,: This is a good example of artists working together on a project. Two early pioneer’s of Dada came together to shape Duchamp’s alter ego. Duchamp posed and Man Ray snapped each and every photograph of the female alter ego.
6. Appropriating: Campbell’s Soup Cans, Andy Warhol, 1962, Screen printing on canvas: a very well known master of appropriation, Warhol would draw artistic inspiration from pop culture, mass consumerism, and advertisement culture.
7. Simulating: You’re In, Andy Warhol, 1967, Spray Paint on glass bottles in printed wooden crate, With this category we see Andy Warhol again as he uses ordinary items to mimic a large chunk of consumerist culture and present it as art.
8. Hybridizing: Char Nuptial Japon, Felix Armand Heullant, 19th Century, Oil on Canvas,: a strong example of hybridization is with the art movement of Japonisme. In this painting we see a very French impressionist style that is reflecting a very Japanese cultural atmosphere.
9. Mixing Media: Monogram, Robert Rauschenberg, 1959, Oil on canvas, paper, wood, stuffed Angora Goat, tire : This work is a prime example of mixing medias as it combines several different elements together to make something between a painting and a sculpture.
10. Layering: Golden Future, Sheppard Fairey, 2018, Color Screen Print and Multimedia Collage, : A prime example of layering many different images to create a singular piece.
11. Mixing Codes: Power Washer, Banksy, Spray paint and Stencil, 2008, : This work mixes codes by the washing of what would be considered priceless parts of historical and cultural history in the form of cave paintings. The work offers a commentary on what we see as art vs. what we see as vandalism.
12. Recontextualizing: The Golden Calf, Damien Hirst, 2008, Vitrine, Formaldehyde, calf, gold, gold plated stainless steel, marble, : this work represents the taking of something mundane and giving it new meaning with added materials and a title that denotes mystical and mythological qualities.
13. Confronting the Gaze: How much Life is Enough?, Juno Calypso, 2018, photograph, :
14. Facing the Abject: Blood Piss Blues Series, Vincius Quesada, Blood, urine, blue paint on canvas
15. Constructing Identities:  Alvin Baltrop, Navy Sailors, 1969--72, Gelatin-silver print
16. Using Narratives: After the Prom, Norman Rockwell, 1957, oil on canvas
17. Creating Metaphors: The Scream, Edvard Munch, 1893, tempera, pastel, oil paint
18. Irony, parody, and dissonance: The Treachery of Images, Rene Margritte, 1929, oil paint

this is the song that would play during the credits of the AWESOME dr strange i daydreamed about being made some day when i was 13. keep in mind i was only up to date with his stories through 1965 or so. there were almost no comics published after 1970 in our house. except the league of extraordinary gentlemen. hoo boy my parents had no idea what i was reading. but i’m actually glad i read it at that age because of orlando, a character who made the idea of being trans or genderfluid seem cool and not scary or weird, which was a positive and comforting influence on me at that age. and led me to read the novel “orlando” by virginia woolf and see the movie based on it. which were equally if not more inspiring and meaningful to me. although alan moore’s version of orlando is really a completely different character who just happens to share the general traits of being immortal and changing sex. but pretty much nothing else from the book.
my 14 or 15th birthday (can’t remember which):
meemaw (yes i really did grow up calling my grandmother meemaw. meemaws are real. she’s from northeast louisiana) sent me some money! mom and dad took me to barnes and noble to spend it! there’s a NEW league of extraordinary gentlemen book called “the black dossier!” i’m so excited to finally read it! it’s a hardcover with a fancy ribbon bookmark (just like those “dear america” books i used to read when i was a dumb little kid many many years ago. like in the distant year of 2003 which was like 6 whole years ago.) so cool! it’s sold in plastic wrap for some reason and on the back it says “recommended for mature audiences!” ooh good thing i’m REALLY mature for my age right
(gets home and takes off the plastic wrap): oh i understand why it had plastic wrap on it now. it’s because of these sections which are literal pornography. like, WAY more than the original series. the way kevin o’neill draws nipples looks kinda weird. they don’t look like they do in real life. i suspect these cocks are not very realistic either. ooh the Cornelius family gets a cameo. (i’m exited about this because i’m a huge fan of michael moorcock. elric lives in the special interest part of my brain where he is currently causing the most significant adolescent sexual awakening since i realized i also liked girls when i got a huge crush on leah in 8th grade. i mean it’s INTENSE. there are psychosexual plate tectonics going on here that are going to form permanent mountain ranges.) oh so jerry and catherine and frank were already doing the incestous murderous love triangle thing when they were little kids. interesting. also there’s a section which is a pastiche of beat novels and it’s unreadable stream-of-consciousness nonsense and i don’t get it. and the cover of the pretend in-universe novel has mina naked on it so there’s more boobies with uncomfortably large and dark areolas. ALSO the literal golliwog is in it, which is going to lead me to erroneously believe for a couple of years that that isn’t racist because alan moore is like, SUBVERTING the racism right? i think he is cool so therefore something he wrote must not be racist because i think if a writer i admire is sufficiently cool that means they are incapable of racism and must generally have only correct opinions because otherwise they won’t be cool but they ARE cool so quod erat demonstrandam not racist. yes that is REALLY teenage me’s reasoning process laid bare. we are informed (in dutch) that the golliwog has a really big dick. this part at the end that they thoughtfully included 3D glasses for is neat. also james bond was in it but he’s called jimmy for copyright reasons and they make it clear that he is an evil rapist brute who works for a basically fascist government. and emma peel from the avengers! i think it’s cool she is in it even though in this story she’s a bad guy. yes this comic is really like that and almost everything i mentioned makes sense in context. oooh AND there’s a parody shakespeare play about characters called shytte and pisse!
mom says i gotta write a thank-you note to meemaw. i shall inform her of my purchase and she will have no idea what i’m talking about and go on her way blissfully unaware because she will never ever read this comic
alan moore ALSO brought me the cherished memory of unexpectedly seeing my dad and little sister in my little sister’s bedroom reading a swamp thing trade paperback that i got from the library together.
i wasn’t allowed to read comics or do anything else fun until i finished my homework and to my undiagnosed adhd ass that effectively meant i wasn’t allowed to read comics or do anything else fun ever so i read in secret while lying in the bath pretending i was just taking a bath. read some sandman and some classic new mutants that way. read some good stephen king books that way too. but my hair didn’t get washed. which it really needed to because this is when i developed what i thought was trichotillomania but is really just a particularly uncontrollable but harmless stim which only rarely leads to me actually pulling my hair out but does result in hair of uneven length because bits of hair get so tangled they can’t be combed out so i gotta snip them off. (cue mom angrily slapping my own hand away from my own head) (i’m doing it RIGHT NOW. it feels REALLY GOOD. i actually kinda like the look of all my random shorter bits of hair that sometimes end up with a sort of crimped texture.)

POP 1966
ROY LICHTENSHEIN !
Roy Lichtenstein is an American pop artist and became one during 1960s along with Andy Warhol Jasper Jones and James Rosenquist he became a leading figure in the new art movement of pop art .
Roy Lichtenstein is very well known in the pop art industry due to the fact that he created it Roy’s work is very comic book like and uses the technique of halftone to create his work one of the famous pop-up pieces is the word pop that is surrounded by shapes You can see this image above he uses black colour in his work but also uses halftone halftone is the pattern that you see of dots one of Roy Lichtenstein The most famous pieces of work is called girl with hair ribbon that was created in 1965 you can see this image above as well his art is realistic in the way of proportions of the human face but colour wise and texture it is very cartoon like I really like his work as it’s colourful and different and I have use the halftone technique in my work for posters and illustrations and it works really well and it has given it a different look compare to others and stands out.

I always loved Pop art. It is one of my favourite kind of artworks since they are always colourful and every time I see pop art it is never dark and depressing. I was always a fan of anything that looks like movie scenes and the aesthetic of New York style. Anything that has to do with the style from the old days. The first artwork is made by Roy Lichtenstein and it is called “Girl with Hair Ribbon” in 1965. I chose this artwork because I love the aesthetic of comic paintings. The second artwork is made by the most famous pop artist Andy Warhol. It is called “Shot Marilyns” made in 1964. It is interesting how he plays with the colours, it is the same photograph of Marilyn Monroe with different coloured backgrounds.

Off To See The Beatles.
Closed starter for @sapphic-yumi
It was July 8th, 1965.
In London’s East End, there lived two ten year old girls named Sarah MacGrady and Gloria Edwards. They were Beatles fans, and Sarah herself wanted to be a guitarist like George Harrison and John Lennon someday. Neither of the girls had school today, so they planned to travel to Abbey Road Studios, and see the Fab Four record.
They planned to take the bus there, since neither of their parents had a car. At the moment, Sarah walking down the street to meet Gloria at the bus stop. She was wearing a white “Mod” style dress with a yellow flower appliqué that her mother had made for her, black Clark’s sandals, a green ribbon in her hair, and a pink enamel purse that a cousin had given her as a birthday present. In it was bus money, some snacks, and a pen and paper for an autograph.
She also had her handmade toy guitar. It was made with a shoebox, an old ruler, rubber bands, popsicle sticks, and some paint.
Hopefully, Gloria was already there.

Level 3 Extended Diploma Unit 13 Project Proposal
Brief
The theme for this project is “Habitat”. I will create images based on the theme of habitat and research from different resources to help develop my ideas to create a final image or images.
Proposal
Name: Olivia McCarthy Pathway: UAL Level 3 Photography Project Title: Habitat
Section 1: Rational    Through the first 12 units of the qualification, I have learnt about experimental photography methods, how to research other artists and how to write about my own work in evaluations. For example, in the “Xperiment” project I learnt darkroom techniques such as dodging and burning to brighten and darken areas of an image. I also learnt experimental methods such as burning film to create an interesting burn effect on enlargements.I have gained skills in taking photos for a client during the “Studio/Client” project when I used a studio to photograph products that my client needed photos for her online store.I have also gained knowledge about what makes a good photo by practising composition techniques such as rule of thirds and also writing about what the narrative or meaning of a photo is in the “Narrative” project. I have a deeper understanding of photography compared to before I started the course because at the start I didn’t know how to properly evaluate my work and write about how research has influenced my ideas but now I do.
Section 2: Project concept    For my project, I want to use experimental methods to create interesting landscape images. This links to the project theme “Habitat” because I’m going to be photographing my local neighbourhood. I also want to create some nighttime images and experiment with shutter speed. Along the way, I want to explore different ideas I have such as portraiture and using digital methods to draw over the portraits to create some mixed-media pieces. I’m going to develop my ideas further as I reflect on my shoots and at the end of the project I aim to have a final series of photos linking to habitat in the form of digital images.Throughout the project I will research from a variety of sources such as the internet and books from the library. I also want to do some primary research, so it’s not just other photographers influencing my work.
Section 3: Evaluation    I’m going to constantly be evaluating my work by writing small evaluations for every photoshoot I do. I’m going to have pages where I create mind maps to document my ideas and if I change my idea I will have a page where I write about what my new idea is and why I have decided to do it. At the end of the project I’m going to write a final evaluation where I reflect on the project as a whole and write about whether I achieved my aims or not.

Portraiture research
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When extending my research on portraiture I began looking at photos that included very bright colours. Then onto photographs where the backdrop matched the clothing of the model. I noticed this was mainly for fashion purposes or campaigns and wanted to focus my work around fashion. I looked at a range of work but specifically liked the photos above as they are very brightly lit up with very few colours being different to the assigned colour. Such as the first photograph having tinted blue sunglasses with the main colour being yellow. I very much liked the expressions as they were very simple. With the main focus being the clothes. I also very much liked the added detail of the middle picture with the red lip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also took a lot of inspiration from pop art and artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. The first painting is by Roy Lichtenstein is called “girl with hair ribbon”. Completed in 1965. This Is a very iconic piece of art work and represents what many people view as pop art. I very much liked the block colours of the yellow hair and red backdrop. The second image is a very famous piece by Andy Warhol called Marilyn diptych completed in 1962. It is her face over and over again both in colour and in black and white. I very much liked the repetition of her face and the effect it created. Lastly the final image was also created by Andy Warhol in 1967 and is titled Marilyn Monroe. This image is also very iconic with it capturing the very essence of pop art with it being bold and bright.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also looked at less famous pop art done by lesser known artists. Where they recreate and adapte the work done by famous artists such as as Warhol. Each of the images above are all repetitions of a famous faces or body parts. They each use bold colours and switch around each colour so no image has the same colours. This is done differently in each image giving me inspiration for my own work.
