The Perfectly Imperfect Father

As a parent, and maybe this is just me, I can speak about my daughters all the time. It truly has been an amazing ride for 19 years (this Friday 😊). A messy, a sometimes ugly, definitely imperfect ride that has provided much growth, much gratitude, and unmatchable joy. The most rewarding experience in my life, and at the same time, most challenging. And those challenges just keep coming as they, and we as parents, continue to evolve. It is a process of continuous learning – as messy as it is! Fortunately, throughout the journey, those that faced similar struggles, were brave enough to share their nuggets of wisdom. Some we’ve used, others we stored away for other times, and a few we moved beyond. The point is, we aren’t alone in this process and like so many before us, we want to share that wisdom, if and however you all may decide to use it!

A few years ago, I had the ability to assist in a Girls on the Run 5k (www.girlsontherun.org.). As part of that, the image above was provided to us as a thank you and, another nugget of wisdom, to help guide us through our journey. Mine has been hanging on my office wall since then, but it has been a long time since I referenced it. When I first received it, I was driving my two daughters all around most days to school, gymnastics, soccer, etc. – like most parents. I’ve missed those times because I had them as a captivated audience 😊. Well, unless their faces were in their phones, or they had friends in the car. But each car ride, as soon as they got in, the proverbial question came out – “how was your day.” I think they began to dread car rides with me because they knew it didn’t end there. My favorite follow ups, a couple learned from the above image:

“What challenged you today?”

“How did you handle it?”

“What did you learn?”

“What made you happy today?”

Sometimes I would get the short answer, if there was even an answer at all, wondering if they were even speaking English. I also came to understand that they will engage when they want to engage. And when they did – those were the true moments of gratitude. Understanding how they were growing and learning each day, becoming their own human being, and navigating their day. My hope it helped them to figure things out, not only with respect to challenges they were growing through in school but taking that and applying it to life too!

Our drive time these days is minimal and even the time we have together is short. But there are a few times during the week that I am blessed with the opportunity to pick there brain a bit, learn a little more about the adults they are becoming, and pick out a question from the list above to see how they continue navigate this perfectly imperfect world each day!

We had to switch beers for our January’s Giving Tap! The tap ran dry on our Cape May Honey Porter so we tapped our Amy’s Amber Lager instead! The recipient of January's Giving Tap is Girls on the Run NJ North, a nonprofit organization located in Sparta. Their organization provides a program, which is a physical activity-based youth development after-school program, for girls in 3rd through 8th grade. They teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. They also choose a community service project to complete so they learn that even at a young age, they can have a positive impact on their community. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. They empower girls to reach their full potential, which is reinforced by having the girls set the goal of completing a 5K and achieving it! Girls on the Run NJ North envisions a world where EVERY girl has confidence, can activate her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams! Founded in 2011 with 58 girls, they have now grown to serve over 5,600. They never turn a girl away from their program for financial need. All scholarship requests are granted. Since their inception, they have provided over $155,000 in scholarships. In 2021, they provided $8775 in scholarships benefiting 12% of the girls who participated. How can you get involved with Girls on the Run? They are looking for financial support, program coaches and 5K volunteers! The Giving Tap is about connectivity. We hope you learn something new in and about your community each month. We hope we inspire you to get involved and volunteer time and/or services. Consider partnering with an additional monetary donation.
