Apple just unveiled their AR/VR headset, the New Vision Pro, and I don't think it's going to catch on. Having witnessed the failures of Google Glass, and the ongoing struggle to make VR anything more than a novelty, I just don't see it working. It's expensive, it looks uncomfortable (I used to sell glasses and wearing something heavy on your face for hours is not something people enjoy), and it also adds to people's concerns about a) always being connected to their phone, and b) about being surveilled in public since you never know if any of these things will be recording you. Plus it doesn't have a physical controller, it uses voice and motion controls, so there is no way people will be able to use it discreetly. There was a reason that users of Google Glass became referred to as Glassholes.
The tech sector continues to be out of touch with how people actually want to live their lives, and instead favour sci-fi futurism asthetics.
However there will be those who will buy and use the New Vision Pro (and the inevitable competitor products), and because we live in a dystopian age of tech, it would not surprise me if a slew of AI/AR software comes with it, finding ways to manipulate the data that comes through these goggles. One such fear that comes to mind is that the kind of AI software that was recently used to generate non-consentual nudes, might be ported into these AR goggles to function as the X-ray glasses, the kind of gadget used as a more raunchy joke in a James Bond movie. While I think it is more likely that these AR/VR goggles are more likely to be a flop, I still think it is important to consider the ways in which this tech could be abused by the companies that sell them (it will be another avenue of data-mining), and bad actors among those who adopt the tech.

Through time, we’ve seen a progressive narrowing of how we experience entertainment: from the collective cinema experience, to the family viewing of the television, to the even narrower audience of the streaming service and various video apps, and now the expectation is that we’ll strap a set of screens directly onto our faces to ensure we can’t share an experience with another person. The development is a worrying one, and illustrates how disconnected tech executives are from real life.
The leaders of the tech industry are not only separated by much of the public because their wealth, experience of the world, and exclusive lifestyles, but also seem to have stunted social lives, or at least a lack of insight into the social nature of regular humans. They think an ideal way of living is one where as much as possible is mediated through digital technology because they have a specific interest in the tools that made them rich and powerful, and continuing a process that put them in that position in the first place. And while people have been open to going along with their visions, it’s pretty clear there’s a growing frustration and even dissatisfaction with the world they’ve created. Doubling down on it seems like a bad idea.
[...]
Given that the Vision Pro will retail for $3499 and won’t launch until 2024, with an initial rollout limited to the United States, I think we have a unique ability to ensure this project fails. We’ve already seen how ridicule can take the hype out of a tech bubble, most recently with crypto and the metaverse, but a decade ago the same thing happened with Google’s attempt to make its Glass smart glasses happen. Instead, its users were termed “Glassholes” and the product was scaled back and sold as a niche enterprise tool.

Coly, the company behind Mahoyaku and Stand My Heroes, have announced a new game. Some friends and I realized that despite looking somewhat generic at first glance, it's got a handful of intriguing things going on with it! So here's a quick kind of long introduction to/my thoughts on Break My Case!
First: the website! The music on the site is really good! Go listen while you read this post!! There are 12 people listed as composers in the credits page, and it seems most every VA involved has at least a bit of experience with singing or music projects. The tone is a bit dark for a rhythm game (though I'm not ruling that out entirely), but otherwise it seems like there's gonna be a music focus. Cool! As far as other staff goes--the main scenario writer is also the writer of Stand My Heroes, and the character designer is Utako Yukihiro, who also did some work for B-Project.
Tumblr media
The story concerns a cafe with a myriad of eccentric employees that runs an after-hours service where they solve problems. The exact nature of all this is left pretty vague.
Tumblr media
And the draw for a game like this: The characters! Interestingly, they're divided into different departments at the cafe. What exactly those departments do isn't clear yet. As for the characters themselves--the more we looked at them, the more we liked them, lol. Quick summaries about what intrigued us about each guy. Note that these are not translations, none of us are fluent in Japanese (we all know just enough to get by with the google+jisho combo lol), and this should all be taken with a grain of salt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Main Office, consisting of Ai Kosaka, Yuzuru Kise, and Roka Suoh. (Names are listed in western given-family order because that's what the site uses for romanized names.) Roka is the one who owns the cafe, is the oldest character in the bunch at 36, and is that fun "mysterious guy with unknown backstory and an endless amount of weird acquaintances, who acts incompetent but might actually be hypercompetent" type of trope.
On account of the whole acting-incompetent thing, Ai and Yuzuru run the actual cafe business. And normally I won't be including fullbody character art in this post but I have to make an exception just this once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr won't let me put four images in a row. Come on man. I wanna maintain the BMC's site style. Why are you mean to me. Anyways. The Simulation Department, consisting of Kou Ayato, Mao Ukyo, Akehoshi Hinomiya, and Yuragi Kanno. "Simulation" is its English name given on the site, but the Japanese given would probably read more like "relationship department".
Kou is a footloose playboy and Mao is a serious intellectual type, but apparently Kou will ask Mao to pretend to be his girlfriend so that he can avoid trouble with women. That's gay. I love that. (Mao is a guy [as far as we know], he just likes makeup--he's not the only one in that cast who does, either!) We all want Mao's outfit.
Akehoshi was a sleeper hit in the group chat, because his bio has a sentence about how he's the most normal-looking-yet-dangerous employee at the cafe, and also explicitly describes him as being like a dog, and naturally we all went crazy for the silly puppy as soon as we realized that he was in fact a silly puppy. Yuragi, on the other hand, likes cats. Such a classic for his character design trope, lmao.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Administrative Department, consisting of Taiga Tsukimoto, Haruhi Ichikawa, and Sei Okiya. Taiga looks cool but if you look at his fullbody he's wearing awful sweatpants and apparently he cries while watching anime. I love this for him. Haruhi is a streamer because that's like an obligatory character trope now I guess. Sei was very popular in the group chat for being the single most suspicious character in the cast. What's his problem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Watchdog Department (or enforcement department, if you translate the jpn) consists of Shizuka Fushimi, Takeru Mikado, Soyogu Shinkai, and Shinobu Aizawa.
My friend described Shizuka as a "wet looking glasshole" and yeah. ok. unfortunately he does look like that. But it's ok he's allowed because his bio says he prefers quiet, orderly places with plants and no people and keeps to himself in common spaces but his own room is a complete mess. AKA he's an autism king. So I like him.
Takeru was obviously a hit because look at them. Takeru and Mao talk about makeup together, apparently. CUTE! Shinobu is the most fashionable guy in the cast and his bio says he has a few screws loose, which is amazing. Good for him. I have nothing to say about Soyogu I think I forgot he existed until I was putting this post together and I only looked at these all guys a few hours ago
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Negotiation Department, with Kiho Arima, Kyoya Shido, and Riku Tateshina. I described this group as "grandma, grandpa, and Columbo" and then the group chat couldn't call any of them anything else. And I do mean grandma. Because. ok. another fullbody. Because oh my god we have to look at Kiho.
Tumblr media
GIRL. WHAT. IS. THAT. YOU'RE WEARING A CARPET. YOU'RE WEARING A COUCH. kiho is apparently a fortune teller and my friend acted as if this excused the outfit but i DONT agree i don't think anything excuses this. WHAT IS THAAAAAT
Kyoya is an artist and Riku is a psychologist so honestly this is a really fun bunch of jobs going on in this department. Riku is described as someone who falls in love easily, and he's most interested in Ai (from the Main Office, the very first guy in this post). We couldn't tell if the implication there is that he's in love with Ai, or if he falls in love with random people and yet his true attention always drifts back to Ai. Both of these options are gay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ST (special tasks) Department, with Yomose Onda, Yu Nina, Kamiya, and Urara Manami.
Yu had his life saved by Tomose and has now dedicated himself to him, to the point of being ready to die for him. YOU GOTTA LOVE THAT. INCREDIBLE TROPE. UNBEATABLE. GAY AS HELL. All we know from Tomose's side is that he's "fond" of Yu. That's fine I'm sure you can learn to love him. Or learn to hate him. Whatever's more entertaining.
Kamiya has no memory, hence the singular name. I'm sure whatever's going on there is weird and interesting. Urara is the youngest character, at 20. THAT'S RIGHT. THE YOUNGEST CHARACTER IS 20. THERE ARE ZERO TEENAGERS! THE AVERAGE CHARACTER AGE IS AROUND 26. THIS SHOULDN'T BE AS NOTABLE AS IT IS BUT THAT'S GACHA GAMES FOR YOU. Anyways I like Urara because I think he looks like an angry kitty.
Anyways, that's the gist of what we know about BMC--or BreMai, if you wanna go for something closer to the jpn abbreviation--right now. More info might drop at/around Animate Girls Fest, since they seem to be giving out game beta codes there. I don't know if I'm completely sold on it just yet--coly did just have a detective-themed gacha game fail a few months ago with &0. But we're not even completely sure it is a gacha yet, or what kind of gameplay it might have otherwise, so... there's a bit of hope. Maybe it'll be a weird cool dark rhythm game! Who knows!!!

Serial Killer Better Names
I'm tired of these fucking asshole serial killers getting cool media names. Fuck that. I looked at each case and named them what they deserve to be known as forever. If you are confused on the nicknames, I highly recommend looking up the case, because I made all the names personal to their stories.
Peter Sutcliffe "Yorkshire Ripper" Renamed "Mama's Boy" Ted Bundy "Campus Killer" Renamed "Literal Baby Bastard Boy" Richard Ramirez "Night Stalker" Renamed "Coco for Cocaine!" HH Holmes "Doctor Torture" Renamed "Smegma Man" Robert Lee Yates "Grocery Bag Killer" Renamed...actually no, wait. This one is dumb already, no change! Put that on his fucking grave lol Albert Fish "The Boogeyman" Renamed "Sparky Ass Boy" Ed Kemper "Co-Ed Butcher" Renamed "Tall Glasshole of Asshole" Rodney Alcala "Dating Game Killer" Renamed "Couldn't Even Win a Date" John Wayne Gacy "Killer Clown" Renamed "Discount Pennywise" Denis Rader "BTK" Renamed "SMI (Super Mommy Issues) Ed Gein "Butcher of Plainfield" Renamed "When DIY Goes Horribly Wrong"

Still catching up to the episodes i missed. During the fight against the mech in The Lady in the Shoe, I was sort of dissapointed, Like the fight starts with ruby sniping the cockpit, creating a bullethole in the glass. Then when she’s hanging in front the window and needs to escape the grasping robot-hand, i thought she was going to rose-petal-teleport through the hole and fight Cordovin inside the cockpit through the glasshole. Sort of dissapointed the fight scenes keep forgetting that ruby can teleport in directions that arent just a general “away from the enemy”.

Some interesting stuff in this review of Peter Norvig's new book (which I don't know anything about)
more
But if you've heard of Google Glass, you may also remember its disastrous public debut. (The phrase "Glasshole" entered the lexicon during this fiasco.)
Here's a fun fact from the book. Google Glass was prototyped for years, as a way to read emails from your boss over a wireless link. The designers thought that people would want this, and tried to make it easier than ever for them to do so. That was a mistake; nobody particularly needed a tiny video camera to read emails. A year into the public's attempt to use it, the engineers gave up and decided to throw away the code for this feature. As far as I can tell, none of the engineers who built Glass could even name its main functionalities
One could imagine that if Glass had been a little different, in the sense that all the things you needed it to do were things you yourself would find it easy to do if you only had eyes. Google Glass was never like that.
The Glass project did not start as an attempt to create a tool for its own use. It started when Google's leadership wanted to build a general-purpose tool for use by all of Google's customers. The software engineers had no say over this; they were working on Glass because management had decided that it would be useful in a very general sense, and then they were supposed to design it as cheaply as possible. Thus, even though Glass did nothing you couldn't also build with a smartphone camera and a few hundred lines of code.
So why did Glass flop? I think the answer lies with Glass's vision. Glass users did not feel like they were using a tool that was designed to support the kind of task they wanted to do. Glass was a tool for reading emails; Glass users never really got a sense of what purpose Glass was supposed to accomplish.
A few years back, I wrote a book. In it, I was very clear about what this project was all about, and how it had to be different than other systems that people might already be familiar with.
So I think that, if Google Glass had been introduced now, instead of in 2012, it likely would have been a success. But it wasn't; Glass was rushed into a market that wasn't ready for it, and now it's relegated to the history books.
On the other hand, "Bimbo" was invented in 2011, just a year after Glass came out, and seems to have been developed with the same mind-set of Glass. There was no idea of Glass as a tool for reading emails, just emails, so the goal was to get the code cheap and fast. It's not surprising that Glass users did not feel they were using Bimbo, either, given that Bimbo's main purpose was, again, reading emails.
[I think this is the first time I've ever seen the words "mind-set of Glass" without some sort of sarcastic subtext]
In the past few years, other attempts to make computer systems that are built with the assumption of easy general use, as opposed to "productivity," have fared better. The iPhone, the Android, the Kindle Fire tablet, and the Echo voice-controlled speaker all made their debuts and have all sold well. The Bimbo doll was a one-off failure; there is no chance of a Bimbo revival.
One of the things I was thinking about as I was reading Glass was the way that most of our society's systems of "human interfaces" are designed to "assist." This is not a problem if your task is something you are good at and want to do.
One might have hoped that as computers become more integrated into our lives, some of the problems of Bimbo and Glass might get worked out.
But this is not happening. Computers that used to be used by a small number of people now need to be able to run software written for a much larger number of people. The iPhone, for instance, was initially built for business people who wanted a mobile computing device to quickly send emails, and that still describes its current market niche. But the iPhone now needs to be able to run software written for people with a wide variety of wants and needs — to read novels, play games, watch movies and TV shows, listen to audiobooks, shop on Amazon, look at YouTube videos, get news and weather.
The final paragraph may have been written with tongue in cheek, but it feels to me like a non-tongue-in-cheek version of some of the criticism I hear of modern society.
It's kind of hard to get back to, if you've been exposed to a modern tech-oriented person for your whole life (or even the last several years of your life, which it seems like a lot of people have been) -- there's the obvious tendency to feel like everyone else is on an elite, cutting-edge level, and that people just below you are using "technology wrong" or "not tech-smart enough" etc. But on the other hand, this also can seem like a sort of natural tendency to the unintentional product of the last decade or so. If most people are just using tech wrong in the sense of "not yet up to the level of cutting-edge tech" (even if many of them aren't on the cutting edge themselves), this has a way of seeming inaccurate, like we're being set up to overestimate the extent to which people "aren't tech-smart enough."
And like -- if most people have this kind of experience of the world, they can't help but notice it. You'd expect it to manifest in any number of subtle ways, right? One of the most obvious, to me, is the phenomenon mentioned in the above quote where it's easy for a given "human interface" to run as many possible tasks as possible for very few people, but as that number increases, it turns out that the interface "lacks robustness" -- it fails at doing many basic tasks and fails at doing many basic tasks hard. Glass falls into this category. It fails (even in its main functionality, as the article says) for many people at all, for various reasons.
But it's also much, much harder to notice if you, say, are a typical consumer who's never heard of the Bimbo, and thus have a much weaker sense of how many different tasks it might do.
Now, Glass could just be a flop. And I wouldn't argue against that. It just seems to me like the flop of the flop of the flop of the Flop of the Flop of
