Danmemo Update

So I’m being lazy, but at least I’ll give you the filler a day early.

Danmemo’s halfway through its collaboration story with Goblin Slayer, and I thought I’d take a second to comment about the game again and speculate on the units for the second half of the game.

I’ve finally gotten through all of the story content, other than the Hermes character missions. And, wow, there was a lot to go through. Most of it was really silly and lighthearted and fun. Which, you know, isn’t a bad place to be for side stories in a mobile game. But there is an absolute ton of character development poured in.

Case in point:

Tiona there on the left is an absolute, shameless, hero geek. Which isn’t to say that she’s obsessed with strength.

And that’s a good thing for her, because there’s maybe a dozen or so adventurers in the setting who are as strong as Tiona is.

And Chigusa, who is on the right, definitely isn’t one of them.

Exactly Tiona, exactly.

But the collab.

So, the basic idea seems to be that a handful of adventurers from Danmachi, and a handful from Goblin Slayer both seem to be trapped in something like a famous dungeon of the Goblin Slayer setting. They’re currently scattered into several groups, but they seem like they’re about to reunite and then they’re sure to dive deeper into the dungeon, face terrible enemies, prevail, and return home triumphant but without any impact on the status quo. This is a non-canon story for both settings, after all.

It’s an interesting choice of shows to mix together. Danmachi is a fairly traditional shonen manga adventure setting, with its massive power scaling, relentless obsession with the suicidal determination of its main characters, and the general moral that the trick to life is to just give it your all and everything will work out. Goblin Slayer is, infamously, not.

I used to pay a fair bit of attention to D&D in the 3.whatever era. So, in D&D terms, Danmachi is a conventional campaign that’s always moving on to bigger and more epic threats. Goblin Slayer is E6, a variant that stops leveling at level 6. And in that kind of setting, even the most minor enemies never stop being a truly lethal threat. Sounds good? Interesting maybe? There’s one problem.

Goblin Slayer is a little lazy as a story. For example, the main character’s name is Goblin Slayer, and the priestess who travels with him is named Priestess. And, here’s the part that makes the story infamous: the way we know that goblins are evil is that in the Goblin Slayer world they’re obligate rapists.

As I said the last time this came up in a story: It’s lazy. It’s grotesque. It’s pointless.

I get why the author wanted the goblins to cross a line. Goblin Slayer himself is supposed to be pragmatic and ruthless, and the things he does in fighting off goblins could easily make it difficult for the readers to sympathize with him. I just don’t like the way the author did it, or the line he chose.

And it’s a shame, because otherwise I really enjoyed the anime.

So yeah, that’s the series and the goblins that your Danmemo waifus are now stuck dealing with...

So far on the Danmachi side, we’ve gotten an Ouka adventurer and a Chigusa assist. And on the Goblin Slayer side we have Goblin Slayer, Priestess, Cow Girl, High Elf Archer, and Noble Fencer. So who’s left?

Well art seems to have spoiled that Ryu from Danmachi is probably getting a unit, almost certainly an adventurer. And Sword Maiden from Goblin Slayer already has enough art and voice work that it would be surprising if she didn’t get a unit, probably an assist. So if there are two banners coming, that probably leaves 3 or 4 other characters that could slot in. We’re likely to have at least one danmachi character on each banner, two adventurers on each banner, and either an assist on each banner or one assist shared between the two. We could also see an adventurer and an assist on each with a shared adventurer.

The other danmachi characters seen and heard so far without units in the event are Bell, Amid, and Freya. Freya is spectating and gambling on the outcome, so she isn’t too likely. Bell has far too many units, so he’s most likely. And a new Amid would be really nice, particularly since her last unit was fairly awesome but had the bad luck of being released at more or less the same time as Haruhime, so it’s probably not her.

For Goblin Slayer, other than Sword Maiden, all the characters we’ve seen already have units. Stand out characters we haven’t seen are Dwarf Shaman, Lizard Priest, Spearman, and Witch. My hope is that it’s Spearman and Witch. Who, as it turns out, share VAs with Bell and Freya and are definitely working in the event already.

So what I’d like to see for the new banners is this: adventurer units for Ryu, Amid, Spearman, and Witch with Sword Maiden as an assist on both banners. And if Bell absolutely needs a unit he can take the assist slot on one of the banners. But I’d rather he got kidnapped by goblins and we had to spend the event trying to rescue him with Ryu as the main Danmachi viewpoint character.

What I’m worried we’ll get is new Bell and Ryu adventurers, a Sword Maiden assist, and different versions of Goblin Slayer and Noble fencer to round out the banners.

Autistic Caleb Widogast

Part One

Caleb Widogast of D&D web series Critical Role is widely recognized by the fan community as autistic-coded. There are many, many, many reasons why, and with the episodes numbering well into the dozens it would take several paragraphs to expound on on all of them.

So here’s the first in a series of posts doing precisely that.

EPISODE ONE:

There isn’t much here in episode one, but there is this:

Caleb uses stereotypically autistic speech patterns in the very first conversation he has in the show. Nott draws it to a close with “All right, well, that’s on the to-do list,” and Caleb immediately mirrors her phrasing with “All right, well, let’s get something to eat then.”

Later, down in the bar, Beau asks Nott if she is cold. Caleb misinterprets this to mean “Why are you wrapped up?” and subsequently explains, very defensively, that Nott is a goblin and obviously goblins are not well-liked in these parts and that is why she is wrapped up and Beau should drop it—which is, uh, pretty much the definition of blunt oversharing, no?

Caleb also, for the first time, shares his magic cat with someone else as an expression of kindness and a kind of second-hand socializing. Beau notes immediately that it’s “kind of therapeutic”; right away, Frumpkin is coded as an emotional support animal. (It helps that he takes Frumpkin absolutely everywhere, often choosing to carry him on his shoulders when he can just as easily pop him in and out of the general vicinity with a snap of his fingers.)

Still later, Jester rearranges one of the shops they visit, and Caleb grows nervous the moment he notices it (“A bit of nerves begin to brew up”). On the one hand, this is probably because he’s afraid of getting in trouble with the shopowner, but on the other: getting anxious at the sight of slight changes in your surroundings is pretty quintessentially autistic.

EPISODE TWO:

Caleb offers to give Nott his cat as a distraction from her urges to steal. Once again, Frumpkin is coded as an emotional support animal. And, on top of this, Caleb seems to hold the idea that—well, he helps me, so obviously he’ll help you too!

Nott reassures Caleb that they can leave the group at the drop of a hat if they need to. “They’ll never know who we were,” she says. “...Caleb and Nott,” he says, responding both literally and with a touch of confusion.

Caleb calls a man’s novel “trashy” and seems to realize a second too late that it was rude; he tacks on a very hasty “No judgement.”

Caleb compliment’s Beau’s muscles very awkwardly.

Caleb goes on to say, “We have been in the woods for too long. I’ve forgotten how to talk to people.” And sure, spending time away from society can make people a little weird. But needing practice to maintain basic social skills like complimenting people? Sounds autistic.

Caleb says, later, “I don’t know what you just said, but I am interested in books. Particularly in the arcane realm, but any kind of book.” That ticks two boxes at once: auditory processing troubles and special interests.

At one point, Beau references Frankenstein and Caleb doesn’t understand what she’s saying. It’s possible, out-of-universe, that this was a meta reference to Frankenstein not existing in the story’s universe, but consider—in-universe, Beau must have referenced the story world’s equivalent of Frankenstein, and Caleb did not get that reference. Therefore: Caleb is not only having difficulty following her metaphor, but he’s missed a pop culture reference.

EPISODE THREE:

caleb is nonverbal after he “gets over [his reaction to casting firebolt]”; he “doesn’t say anything, but starts pushing bodies onto the back of the cart”

stays nonverbal for A While; “during all the busywork, i’m not saying anything, but i keep giving worried and stressed glances at my little friend”

in the middle of planning, with zero transition or context, caleb goes, “also i have a cat” and doesn’t offer context til jester goes ?? yes he’s cute?

gets excited & dances in the street w/nott on his shoulders (stim!!)

nott, when caleb ignores jester in favor of reading: he gets like this when he’s studying. he gets very focused, it’s best not to disturb him

“i prefer him as a cat, to be honest, but in a pinch–” change Bad, cat Good

when jester braids caleb’s hair, liam says “it feels nice”; Sensory Good

“i’m a good talker when i have to be”; qualifies the statement, implying it’s an occasional mask he dons when Necessary

E4:

at the very end of caleb’s conversation w/the guard, liam says caleb looks him in the eye, which implies he was Avoiding eye contact before that

caleb, in court, bluntly: i’m a dirty hobo and i reek like yesterday’s garbage

caleb, abruptly: well, you know, this is very fascinating, but i have some errands to run. nott, would you like to run errands with me? we are totally coming back and not leaving on our own undercover

caleb calls the old shopkeep “grandfather”; he does this with other elderly folks in later episodes too [the woman in the melora statue; madam musk], even when he knows their names. seems like maybe an internal rule that he has to refer to old folks this way bc it’s Respectful?

caleb, overexplaining: this is called a bath nott: i’ve heard of them caleb, still overexplaining: a hot bath

E5:

caleb: before i go away, am i looking for anything specific? beau: just people coming caleb, echoing: people coming…

caleb ducks back behind a corner mid-fight & says “nein nein nein"; repetitive speech

caleb later ducks back behind the same corner & says “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”; Big Autistic Mood

E6:

[abruptly] “well, my social anxiety is getting the best of me. i’m taking a walk. goodbye” + brisk exit

caleb realizes belatedly that his question abt alfield giving them extra coin was callous, goes “it’s asking a bit much, i was too forward”; low empathy

“i’’m sorry, it’s very noisy in the shop. what did you say?”; APD

the whole conversation in the shop caleb is just–super blunt. “i’ve been on the road a long time and i’m carrying a smell with me, if you cannot tell" “to the point, i like it” “i don’t mean cheap shit” “well, it’s a barn, ja?”

caleb, on being reminded that people are dying: maybe i can put [turning frumpkin back into a cat] on hold, although i really hate to (emotional support animal + Different Is Bad + low empathy)

“we can do both, but there is a timestamp on the people. we should take care of the people first, because then we’re increasing how much gold we will bring in, because if they die then we will not get as much money for them if they are alive”; low empathy + extreme practicality

E7:

“yes, handle this [grievously injured] child, but then we’re very curious to ask a couple–i’ll shut up”; [sing-song voice] low empathy……

caleb: you know, it’s funny, because only about 30 minutes ago i also had a bird, but he was obliterated beau: oh, that’s right caleb: it was very sad. i’ll bring him back tomorrow shakaste: thanks for that caleb, oblivious: he and i, we are [crosses fingers] like that

E8:

jester: well, she’s mostly known for her hmm-hmm-hmm. outside of that, her voice is amazing, you should hear her sing caleb: what does that mean? jester: what does what mean? caleb: hmm-hmm-hmm

E9:

feel like it’s worth noting this is the episode where beau tells caleb “maybe you would know what we’re up to if you went along with the group for once!” & from there on out p much invariably caleb makes it a point to step back & go along wherever the group wants. so–internal rule!

“i’ve got to stop complimenting you, it does not lead to good moments” + immediately walks away

beau, shouting: he said enTHUSIASM! caleb, jumping & cringing: ohH jeez!!

caleb sees that yasha is uncomfortable w/jester hugging her & does an Understanding Nod; yasha says, “i’m very uncomfortable with human touch” & caleb goes “i feel like i know you better now”; reads as Same Hat

gets angry at jester. swipes mud down his face in a wordless fuck-you. doesn’t rly align w/any specific autistic traits but listen. listen. does that seem like the kind of thing a neurotypical would do? i don’t think so.

After watching me complain and complain and complain about what went wrong, I guess I’ll try to at least end this on a more positive note. Stuff like, FOMO aside, why did I even bother all the way ‘til Pipi and Jingting’s first kiss, which ended in her fainting in his arms? (I mean, I found that scene hilarious, but it was really through that that I realized how much I didn’t care for this show.)

Many audiences have stepped out and compared this to, say, k-drama Goblin or My Love From Another Star, but as a non-kdrama fan, this personally really reminded of the old supernatural Western fandoms that were part of my childhood. Stuff like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where these mythological beings took the form of humans and (somewhat) blended into modern society. (I guess with the romance and all, this show specifically is closer to Twilight, but I have real taste and haven’t seen that. And also, now I know I really wouldn’t care for Twilight, I guess.) Watching xianxias including Condor Heroes and Chinese Paladin around the same time, I would make up stories where snake spirits, fox spirits, demigods, and semi-devils would, too, experience modern society—though of course not in high school!

That was all so many years ago, but the premise itself really felt so nostalgic to me. And yeah, these fox aliens are reasonable beings who obviously know to avoid not just high school, but education in China in general. I’m so stoked by that.

Borrowing from Shadow of Mordor

Been playing a lot of that and Shadow of War, so I’ve been thinking about how to steal interesting mechanics.

My first thought was actually about the Last Chance mechanic. If you haven’t played the game, if Talion (the protagonist) loses all his HP, he staggers and falls to his knees, and can only slowly crawl about. If an orc (or beast, or whatever) attacks you at that point, you get a quick time event. If you fail, you die (and the orc that killed you gets promoted, and you get an event to murder them horribly when you reform). If you succeed, you counter the attack and stagger back to your feet with a quarter of your HP. If, somehow, nothing attacks you for a good ten seconds or so, you get back up with a quarter of your health.

My idea here was modify the current death/dying state in the various D&Ds (I’m simultaneously working on two 3.5 games, as a player and a DM, planning a 4e game and a 4e-inspired one-shot, and planning a 5e game, so I am all kinds on confused). Currently, you drop to 0 HP and then sit around making death saving throws (or equivalent) until you die or someone heals you. And if anyone attacks you, you’re more or less dead.

My idea then, is twofold - first, that dropping to 0 HP isn’t flat on your back unconscious. I know that’s not how some folks run it, but I felt it was important to state it for clarity. If you’re dying, you’re primarily occupied with holding your blood in, and the gray walls of death are closing in about your mind, but you can still sort of move (~5ft/1sq a round), and still sort of act (I’d eyeball it as a minor action every other round. So yes, you can pull that potion from your belt and drink it, or call upon your god to heal your wounds, but it’ll take an agonizingly slow amount of time.

Second, if you are attacked (in melee or otherwise), you can attempt to parry the attack and get back to your feet on momentum and luck. Now, the exact implementation of this will vary depending on edition. In 3.5, call it a Reflex save vs DC 20. In 4E (because everyone should have a good attack line), I’m tempted to call it a <Your main stat> vs enemy’s Reflex, or treat it as [Weapon] vs enemy’s AC. (Maybe verses a static DC based on what tier you’re in). 5E, I don’t know yet. If you succeed, you interrupt their attack and (3.5) become staggered/are set to 1HP, (4E) can spend a healing surge. If you fail, their attack proceeds as normal (and you probably bite it).

The second idea was drawn from the immense frustration I have in how Talion controls. Sometimes, he’ll jump twenty feet vertically up a wall. Sometimes, it’s only to the next handhold. As someone who enjoys parkour games, this is immensely aggravating. So, the idea here is to tie your Acrobatics/Athletics/Climb/Jump/Swim modifiers to a minimum performance. Now, this does take some of the joy out of the various ways to take 10 on skill checks in 3.5 (for instance, as a barbarian with a climb speed), but it also sets a consistent baseline for skillful mobile characters. Which, let’s face it, fly is a third level spell, and feather fall, levitate, and spider climb are all available earlier.

The real question here (that is subject to DM will) is what I’ll call the Wushu Threshold. This is the point beyond which everyone has lightness kungfu, and gravity is more like a guideline (with really harsh enforcers when they do notice you). I like to set the Wushu Threshold about at level 10ish for standard 3.5, with level 7 being whether folks could pick it up if they build their characters around it (just outside of E6, basically). For 4E... could be Paragon, could be Epic. Not sure yet.

Still thinking this one through, so I don’t have numbers yet.

The last idea is more big picture (and undeveloped), and it concerns Rangers. Specifically favored enemies. Basically, instead of the 3.5 categories, Rangers choose two of the following : Beasts (anything covered by Knowledge: Nature; so animals, magical beasts, lycanthropes, etc), Men (any humanoids, be they man, elf, dwarf, goblin, giant, etc), Mages (any arcane phenomena-things,- golems, elementals, actual wizards) and Spirits (mostly undead, but also outsiders, some fey). So Aragorn is a Beast and Man Hunter. Drizzt is a Man and Mage Hunter. Holtzmann from Ghostbusters is a Mage and Spirit Hunter. Between that and wanting Rangers to have more options to use/control/adapt the terrain, I may have to do a ranger prestige class in the same vein as my paladin prestige class.
