Adventure Time Season 6, Episode 6 Analysis
“Breezy”
TW: rape, depressive ideation
The birds and the bees; A concept taught to us at a young age in order to be exposed to reproduction and sexual intercourse. Many adolescents dread the idea, but what happens when one attempts to make that idea reality? What happens when sex is used as a coping mechanism?
Throughout the span of Adventure Time season 6 thus far, Finn has undergone many extremities. In the span of just six episodes, Finn has lost his arm, his father, and his mental stability. Any who endure such experiences would surely have a challenging time processing their emotions. In episode 6, season 6 of Adventure Time, Finn is undergoing said challenging process.
In “Breezy”, the episode starts off with Finn getting his severed arm checked out by Doctor Princess. Claiming the flower connected to his limb is droopy due to electrolytes, Doctor Princess ensures to Finn that the flower’s state is due to his deteriorating mental state. Losing an arm? Having your dad be the cause for your lost arm? Situations like these can be detrimental to one’s psyche. Once Doctor Princess tells Finn to have fun, Finn asks Doctor Princess on a date. Being rejected, he goes out to Crab Princess’s party in order to fulfill Doctor Princess’s order of having fun.
On the way to the party, Finn imitates the droopy state of his flower and drags himself to the party all while singing a song:
“I’m lost in the darkness, what will this bring? Autumn descends on me, autumn.”
Finn understands that he is in a dark state of mind; but what he doesn’t understand is how to get out of that dark state. In order to “have fun”, he takes himself to Crab Princess’s party with hopes that he will fill the void. As Finn is following the path ahead of him, a bee with the name of Breezy spots him and his flower.
Moments later, we see Finn and Breezy attend the party. Though Finn attended this event to have fun, we see that he is not enjoying himself at all. As everyone is dancing, Finn is secluded and simply lets life pass by him. With no hopes in enjoying himself, he meets Breezy who offers to assist him in kissing Crab Princess. This offer is supposed to be a win for both of them! Breezy spends more time with Finn’s flower while Finn gets the kiss he has been longing for. But what happens when something you have been looking forward to makes you feel nothing? After Finn kissed Crab Princess, he stated that he still felt nothing; The void is still there and he thinks that kissing more women may assist him in filling said void. When a singular kiss provides him with nothing, surely multiple would make him feel something right?
With that in mind, Finn sets off to kiss more women. As he gains his smooches, Breezy gains more time with Finn’s flower. What seems like a fair deal only turns to a one-sided favor as Finn feels nothing from his experiences with these women. After a few women, Finn finds himself with Frozen Yogurt Princess; Someone who Jake claims to be a clear mixture of Flame Princess and Princess Bubblegum. Following that statement, Jake says that Finn seems to still be hung up on both of them. As a response, Finn breaks out in rage as he states that he is “Hung up on nobody”. But that’s just the thing; Finn IS still hung up on both FP and PB. In Finn’s head, he is already putting him and his flower through enough emotional turmoil; If he admits to himself that he is still hung up on both princesses, then all of the kisses he has gotten thus far would mean that they were distractions. While that may be true, Finn does not want to admit it to himself.
In a rage, Finn and Breezy leave the tree house. Finn explains to Breezy that he is simply following Doctor’s orders and trying to have fun. Losing hope, Finn briefly says how he should just let the flower die. In shock, Breezy rebukes and tells Finn to keep the flower alive. Following that, Breezy mentions how she is a virgin queen bee which is an important plot point for later in the episode. Back on the move, Finn and Breezy bump into bee bullies. These bees harass Breezy because she is not in her hive. In an attempt to protect Breezy, Finn fights back and takes the beating. Breezy, caring so much for the flower attached to Finn, reaches into the bullies’ hive and takes their royal jelly. Once Breezy drank of the royal jelly, she was no longer a virgin queen bee; Her build has obviously grown and she gains powers that she did not have before. Pollen in this sense may mean puberty and the act of getting older. After taking the bullies out of the equation, Breezy confesses to Finn. She tells him that she loves his flower and that she loves him. Breezy’s love for Finn and his flower are so strong that she offers her pollen to Finn. If Finn were to ingest the pollen, then Breezy said that he would become her drone. What is meant by this is that Finn’s virginity would be taken by Breezy. “The birds and the bees”.
Following the confession, Finn apologizes, for he does not feel the same way; nor does he feel anything. Breezy displays her emotion as she cries, stating that she “royal jellied” for him. In a state of anguish, Breezy leaves, to where Finn says that he is “lost in the darkness”.
As the night falls, Finn continues to follow his goal of feeling whole again. At Lumpy Space Princess’s place, Finn is dancing to get his mind off of the previous events. LSP, who is already aware of Finn’s plan, tells him that it is her turn for a kiss. The music stops, and the two kiss. However, a kiss was not the only thing LSP was looking forward to. As the two parted lips, LSP states that “[she] didn’t wait an eternity to take a dip into the kiddy pool” and that she wants to go into “the deep end”. As a response, Finn says that he is “not a good swimmer”. And following that, the scene ends with LSP puckering up with a screen fading to black. LSP had raped Finn.
Finn has been longing to feel something; This is why he kissed princesses all around Ooo. But is this, the feeling of being sexually assaulted what he had been asking for? He did more than just kiss a princess, so why does he still feel numb? After LSP and Finn had finished, Finn covers up his torso with the blanket. Alongside that, he asks his flower if what he did with LSP had helped it which led to a petal falling off the flower’s stem. Finn literally and metaphorically deflowered. Once the petal falls off of the stem, Finn states how he will forget this happened and place this memory into the vault alongside his other repressed emotions. As said previously, Finn’s current issue is repression, and as long as he continues to do that, he will never be at peace with himself.
While Finn attempts to forget, Breezy returns singing on about how she still has love for Finn. The voice of Breezy awakens Finn, and he begins to sing along. Still slightly delirious, Finn begins to envision someone. Someone beautiful and whom he wishes was singing this song for him. That someone is Princess Bubblegum. When Finn had lost his arm, he had lost everything, including his will to be a hero. Envisioning his first love singing to him to keep fighting and to let love be his guide in continuing forth, Finn comes to a realization; Maybe he truly was hung up on PB this whole time. The first step in improving your mental state is realization and processing. Finn had finally come to the conclusion that he is still fond of PB and that he is hurt by everything. And with that, Finn’s flower begins to grow. And so does his arm.
The process of understanding and coming to terms with your own emotional turmoil is challenging; It is a lot to deal with. However, it is necessary to grow. Finn’s flower had thrived not due to fun, but to acceptance. “Breezy” is an episode that is pivotal to Finn’s growth. Performing sexual acts was never going to make him feel better. The concept of the birds and the bees may be seen as a natural act, but to Finn, it was seen as a means to feel. Evidently this is not the case, and he was only left with more emptiness. But as he began to be honest with himself, he discovered that perhaps these acts may not have been the solution at all. Following this episode, we see Finn begin to be more honest as he continues to face more and more difficult situations. As long as he is aware, then he can be prepared for all that is to come.
WHEW that was a lot! Thank you for reading it all heheh. I just want to point out that I believe it is up to interpretation whether or not LSP truly did rape Finn. I believe she did given all of the virginity metaphors but it's up to the watcher I suppose. Anyways, again thanks for reading! It's been a WHILEEE since I have written an analysis; this is wayyy overdue. Have a good rest of your day :3
