#God's way
God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supplies.

We know that we are "wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14), that God's "way is perfect" (Psalm 18:30), and we also know "God [does not] lie... [nor would He] change His mind" (Numbers 23:19).
A perfect, unchanging, and truthful God is very good news to sinful people who view right as wrong and wrong as right depending on the day. We might change but I’m thankful that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). The words of this unchanging Christ “will not pass away” (Matthew 24:35).
Whatever was wrong thousands of years ago, it is still wrong today. Consider the words of the apostle Paul to those who used to sin like this: “such were some of you” (1 Corinthians 6:11). There was a visible change found in those who used to live for sin. As noted by Matthew Henry, “The Greek word [in 1 Cor. 6:11] is tauta—such things were some of you, very monsters rather than men... How glorious a change does grace make! It changes the vilest of men into saints and the children of God. Such were some of you, but you are not what you were.”
You can mutilate your body, use hormones, wear makeup, and change the laws to make yourself feel accepted but you will always be how God made you be.
Nothing you do can change God's design. Repent of your sins and be “washed,… sanctified,… [and] justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11).

imagine being someone at new rome university and not knowing percy is the same guy as “percy jackson, son of poseidon, two-time hero of olympus, former praetor” because the thought doesn’t even cross your mind. like… he’s percy. he’s a total frat boy. on a normal night, he walks into a party, refers to everyone as bro or dude, socializes with every living (and not-living) person in the room, makes at least 50 sarcastic comments, plays 12 rounds of beer pong, drinks way too much, and then skates around campus on his skateboard yelling “I LOVE NEW YORK” (which makes no sense, because they’re in california) until someone calls his girlfriend to come get him.
and then one day there’s an attack, and frat boy percy is all of a sudden a fighting machine. he’s yelling battle cries alongside the praetors frank zhang and hazel levesque as they lead everyone into battle. (why is he with the praetors? and why…. why in the world do the praetors seem to be following his lead?) his sword slashes through armies of monsters faster than you’ve ever seen. he’s controlling the entire river surrounding the camp, creating huge waves as tall as skyscrapers that crash down all around him, wiping out monsters and causing mass destruction to his enemies’ ranks. the sky is suddenly dark above you, ice-cold water droplets are slashing through the air, and the wind is blowing so aggressively that it’s making it hard to stand up steadily. because he’s somehow created a hurricane.
and he looks terrifying. you can feel the power radiating off of him. he’s like a god. or maybe a monster. it’s hard to tell. you’re a little scared of him, to be honest. but also in total awe, because it’s extraordinary. he’s extraordinary.
frat boy percy is not who you thought he was.

I cannot put into mortal words how fucking badly I want that swedish goat to burn. We live in a modern surveillance hellscape and not only is big brother watching you but he’s monitoring your purchase habits so he can sell you a smart refrigerator that will spy on you for the cia. the full weight of modern technology can be rallied to protect that straw monument to human hubris and I want us to burn it anyway. I want the might of modern society to crumple in the face of a drunk swede with a zippo lighter. we can do it just take my hand

God's direction
Tumblr media
When someone takes a position or heads off in one direction, you just know what’s coming next. Someone else is going to take the opposite position. Or head off in the opposite direction.
It almost doesn’t matter what the position or direction is. It could be something simple or something difficult. Something novel or something obvious.
There’s just something about us. Something in human nature, that’s hard-wired to be contrary.
Start with our native contrariness. Throw in our over-arching need to be right. Plus a dash of ego. And you have a recipe for deep, damaging divisions.
Leading us into the trap of seeing the world, of seeing people, as either on our side. The right side. Or as wrong. And our enemies.
You see it everywhere. It happens even between people who have so very much in common. People who – you would think – should be the closest of friends and allies.
Which is why the last part of today’s Gospel is so important. It’s a moment that’s easy to miss.
Peter is pulling Jesus to do one thing. It’s nothing bad. But it’s not what Jesus knows God is calling Him to do either.
Instead of telling Peter that he’s wrong, and heading off in the opposite direction. Instead of being like us.
Jesus doesn’t worry about who’s right and who’s wrong. Jesus doesn’t waste time picking sides.
Jesus rejects the whole us-versus-them dynamic. A dynamic that we – as human beings – are way too comfortable with. A dynamic that’s the secret sauce in our recipe for division.
Jesus gently but firmly ignores the whole thing. And heads out in God’s direction.
May God grant us the grace to always do the same.

for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal
before it was like, "what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?"
and now it's like, "ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it's pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we've normalized this experience"

Can we go back to this for a sec? To Aziraphale having to explain the concept of being in love to the other angels? Because I cannot imagine what a trip it has to be, falling in love with someone when that is literally not something you are supposed to be able to do. When it is something you barely understand. When the object of whatever this is isn't supposed to be able to feel this way either, except as time goes on you start to realize it's happening to him too. And neither of you can actually talk to each other about it.
