#Gold Diggers of 1934

Text
So I'm working my way through the book Pre-Code Hollywood by Thomas Doherty, and the author has made some fascinating observations about the way food and hunger were shown in Depression-era films:
"Work or starve. Fulsome evidence of one common experience in the Great Depression, the palpable pangs of hunger afflict screen characters across the genres, men and women alike living hand to mouth, propelled by the basic biological urge to eat, to earn not even a decent day’s wages but just a square meal. Food and eating are more than leitmotifs in pre-Code Hollywood; people literally faint from hunger. In the Warner Bros. blockbuster 42nd Street (1933), undernourished hoofer Ruby Keeler collapses from exhaustion. In the follow-up musical Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), chorines steal a bottle of milk for a spartan breakfast. In King Kong (1933), down-and-out Fay Wray reaches weakly for sustenance from a fruit stand. In It Happened One Night (1934), spoiled brat heiress Claudette Colbert flings a hearty meal into the ocean, an act merely impulsive in flush times but wastefully sinful now. Later, she suffers for the transgression. On the road and penniless, she feels true hunger for the first time. Forced to forage in the woods like an animal for carrots, she learns the value of a single chocolate bar and the pleasures of dunking doughnuts."
The author goes on for several more paragraphs, giving more examples. I thought it was a particularly interesting example of the way societal anxieties are represented in art even when the art isn't explicitly about that anxiety.
Now I'm just thinking about how fascinating it would be to study the way food is used and portrayed in film across decades, and what other things impact that portrayal.

My Carole Lombard snow day mini-marathon continues with a delight of a film. To set the mood, please enjoy Russ Morgan and his orchestra's rendition of the hit 1934 song "Hands Across the Table."
youtube
This lovely tune is played over the opening credits of the correspondingly titled Hands Across the Table, a screwball romantic comedy vehicle for Carole that became the first of four successful pairings with Fred MacMurray for Paramount.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like a great deal of 1930s comedies, Hands Across the Table deals with class consciousness and the relationship between money and happiness. It's about a pair of gold diggers--a man and woman--looking to marry into wealth to guarantee personal and financial security in such trying times. They connect in the salon where Carole's Regi gives Fred's Ted a manicure. Hands across the table, indeed. (Also please normalize men getting manicures again.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ted is engaged to a wealthy snob while Regi gives daily manicures to Ralph Bellamy's rich and adoring Allen, but the spark between the leads is undeniable, bolstered by both a fantastic script and the real life chemistry between Carole and Fred. Although Carole and director Mitchell Leisen had to drag Fred's comedic performance out of him almost literally kicking and screaming, the begrudging affection between Regi and Ted appears effortless thanks to how well our stars just click. Leisen (pictured below in the preppy shorts, which we should also normalize for men again) even reported that Carole and Fred's uproarious laughter in the telephone scene was 100% genuine and unscripted. Personally, I'm inclined to believe him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even the promotional stills--depicting a high-class nightclub scene that regrettably never occurs in the film--sizzle with laughter, love, and life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a buoyancy enveloping the whole production. It teaches a little-known cure for hiccoughs. It features two old timey cosmetic death traps. It has a cute cat named Whitey. It's delightfully irreverent. It's irresistibly intimate. It's insatiably happy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even thrown-over Allen has to laugh at the end! (Which is actually kind of sad. Pour one out for Allen tonight.)
Tumblr media
Speaking of laughs, a flipped coin gets the last one.
Tumblr media
My last entry in the Carole Lombard snow day mini-marathon will be another collaboration with Fred MacMurray. Until then, check out my star rating for Hands Across the Table and extend your hand to me across the digital table on Letterboxd.

Stede/Ed — It Happened One Night AU
In an AU set anytime from 1934 to now, Stede's father says he intends to marry Stede off as part of a business deal. Having a bit more freedom than a 1717 gentleman, Stede packs his (too much) stuff and runs. He arranges to go meet Mary, his friend who's studying art inconveniently far off, and marry her so he won't have to marry a stranger.
Stede boards a bus (his father would never think to look there) and meets Ed. Ed figures out Stede's situation and offers to help him get to Mary in return for compensation. Stede needs the help, because his dad has sent Badmintons to try to find him, and Stede accidentally tipped off his location at a bus station, so they're on his trail.
As they deal with travel hassles and evade Badmintons together thanks to Ed's repertoire of fuckeries, Ed and Stede fall in love. Near the end of the trip they confess, but while Ed goes to get them a car/motorcycle/ticket, the Badmintons nab Stede and attack his insecurities, saying Ed's a gold digger who's taking a payoff from Bonnet Sr. to leave him. Then they take Stede to... Mary. She and Stede are shocked to learn they were the arranged match all along, and reluctantly agree to go through with it and marry in name only, like they'd planned.
During the ceremony the wedding venue fills with smoke, and Stede, recognizing Ed's favorite trick, gets Mary's blessing to go, and flees the wedding to run away with Ed.
+ Ed did end up grabbing the cash payoff from Bonnet Sr. anyway, because pirate.

Here's a challenge. Name your favorite Looney Tunes cartoon for each year!
that IS a challenge... keep in mind i haven't seen every LT cartoon yet and these are subject to change, and some favorites may be "i don't love this but it's better than the others or at least i've seen it period" but YOU'RE ON!
1930: The Booze Hangs High
1931: You Don't Know What You're Doin'!
1932: Ride Him, Bosko!
1933: Bosko in Person
1934: Those Beautiful Dames
1935: Gold Diggers of '49
1936: The Blow Out
1937: Porky's Duck Hunt
1938: The Daffy Doc
1939: Wise Quacks
1940: Porky's Last Stand
1941: The Henpecked Duck
1942: My Favorite Duck
1943: Porky Pig's Feat
1944: The Stupid Cupid
1945: Draftee Daffy
1946: The Great Piggy Bank Robbery
1947: A Pest in the House
1948: Dough Ray Me-ow
1949: Daffy Duck Hunt
1950: Boobs in the Woods
1951: A Bear for Punishment
1952: Fool Coverage
1953: Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century
1954: Baby Buggy Bunny
1955: One Froggy Evening
1956: Barbary-Coast Bunny
1957: Three Little Bops
1958: Robin Hood Daffy
1959: Apes of Wrath
1960: Person to Bunny
1961: The Last Hungry Cat
1962: Quackodile Tears
1963: Transylvania 6-5000
1964: Dr. Devil and Mr. Hare
1965: Corn on the Cop
1966: A Taste of Catnip
1967: Merlin the Magic Mouse
1968: Bunny and Claude
1969: The Great Carrot Train Robbery
1959-1969 i think i all pulled out of my ass LOL i actually CAN'T STAND A Taste of Catnip, but it's the only 1966 cartoon i can remotely remember well and it gets points for getting a visceral reaction out of me. i've seen every cartoon from 1930-1950 and every cartoon from 1966-1969 (as well as every Daffy and every Porky short), so these could be subject to change but. heavy duck bias here
